I just ordered new laptops for my wife and me. Ended up finding this deal here:

    Acer Aspire 7750 AS7750-6458 17.3" Notebook LX.RNA02.008

That's a pretty good deal for an i5-2430M and 6850M. Already have more ram and SSDs from our current laptops that i can swap over to these ones. Should be here friday!

That is a very good deal with free shipping! I'd snatch it up myself if I didn't already have the 6669 model.
You may want to consider installing the modded BIOS if you want true control of which GPU you want to use at any given time.

I'll let you know how it performs when i get them tomorrow. Hopefully it's not disappointing lol... Replacing my Asus K53TA with an A6-3400M, 6650M combo.

By default these laptops come with the integrated intel video disabled "permanently" correct? The modded BIOS allows you to enable the integrated video and switch between them on the fly?

What are video driver are you guys using? What's the best?

Yours may allow you to disable the integrated graphics permanently. My AS7750G-9810 does not allow it, even when you force it to use the PEG always, it will still switch when it wants to.

Well it should be here today. I'll let everyone know how it is configured. I wasn't too impressed with the switchable graphics on my current ASUS. It allows you to crossfire the IGP on the CPU with the dedicated 6650M or switch between one or the other. While the theory is great, execution was really poor. I would almost rather have the IGP be disabled to prevent crappy driver and configuration problems.

Looks like the IGP is disabled "permanently", i don't know that it's worth it for me to even explore modded bios to enable this as i will probably never be taking this laptop with me anywhere.

This particular 7750G only has two memory slots for a total of 8GB instead of the four slots for a total of 16GB that some came with

With 8GB of ram and a sata2 SSD i got these scores with WEI:
    cpu 7.0
    ram 7.4
    both graphics 6.9
    storage 6.7

Not "awesome" but also not terribad. I realize WEI is not a very good determination of performance at all, but i figured i would let you guys know just so you can see how others may compare.

Ok ehancock, you have my attention LOL. I really need to know what the SSD speeds are since we have 6gbps on our modded bios with the ASUS. Also, the stock dual i5 on this is way better than our quad? Obvs i7 is an easy upgrade.

From what I've read this laptop should support Sata 6Gb/s but i don't have a Sata 6Gb/s drive that i can test it with. Acer BIOS are notoriously bare bones so there's nothing in there that says anything about it. I have an older Kingston sata2 SSD that really isn't a "great" drive installed and everything is instant with it.

The i5 benchmarks much better than the A6 in our Asus, but obviously that's without an OC. From my experience so far, this laptop is performs much better than my Asus ever did. The only game i play on a regular basis and can compare the two laptops is CS:Source.

Asus at 1366x768 on mostly mid/high settings, NO AA, NO Anisotrophic i would be ~130-150fps. If there was a lot going on it would drop down to 50fps. If there was nothing going on it could jump to 200+

This laptop at 1600x900 with every setting as high as possible i didn't see it drop below 170fps. It's almost always 190-220. If there's nothing going on it's higher.

Sorry i don't have a ton of time to play games so i don't have any better comparisons. I'll probably try out some bf3 soon here.

Oh, the 17" screen at 1600x900 is much more crisp than the 1366x768 on the Asus.

Well it seems as if BF3 should run a lot better too from the youtube videos I've seen. That's my main game & is pretty much my benchmark at this point LOL.

But yeah, really need confirm by someone on here for the 6gbps.. I would most likely pull the trigger at that point.

I'm impressed that it has room for 2 SSDs w/o taking out the optical, but I might take it out anyway to rock a third SSD since I only have two 256's right now & def need more room.

If any of you do have a 6gbps drive, I need to know if it's 6gbps in the main bay & the secondary bay. & if by some chance there's a caddy for the optical bay & you already have it.. I'd like to know the speeds there too pleeeeease!

The only problem is the panel that allows the extra room for the 2nd drive is getting impossible to find.

Used the laptop for some gaming this weekend. My only beef with it is that it runs a bit warmer than my K53TA. CPU is ~79-80C under load during gaming, and that's while using a cooling pad.

Are you sure your clock speeds are right? I have had stuck low clocks with some drivers. With the 6650m I got a pretty significant boost with an increase of just 50mhz using OverDrive. In Heaven Benchmark anyway, no BF3 to test.

Well, i should have noted that was with the native res of 1600x900. I lowered res from 1900x600 to 1280x768 which is what everyone with the Asus would have been using and with everything on auto-high 8xAA 16xAF i was still getting like 35-50fps. I'll probably mess around with it a bit tonight to see what i can get.

I don't pay close enough attention to drivers and gaming stuff to know what the best display driver is... so any recommendations are welcome lol.

Got mine but don't have time to do anything until around 9P EST =/

Put the SSD in the main bay & the bluetooth wifi card I purchased for the ASUS, and the 8gb ram from the ASUS in it..

I really like the bottom plate. I couldn't figure out how to remove the optical, so I just pulled on it to try... & it came out. Then I realized the screw was on the bottom plate, which is super convenient!

Nice to have a better webcam & sound! The keyboard is fine.

Anyway, I put Win 7 Ult on it & it didn't pick up the wifi card straight away, so I'll have some work tonight. I took the card that came in it & popped it into the ASUS with no probs. Get's better range then the bt card..

Thankfully I have a dremel with tons of bits & also the optical caddy looks like it'll work just fine too.. so what I'm going to do is SSD, SSD, HDD in the optical or wherever safest & coolest operating place would be for the HDD. The HDD will be the one from the ASUS since I hate selling used HDDs for ID protection.

I was really confused when I saw how many open spots inside... specifically the empty memory bay.. I couldn't figure out what went in there until I moved the memory over & couldn't find a second slot in the one section.

I'm also a fan of the bottom plate because the screws don't come out, which is handy!

FYI messing with settings i was getting steady 30-40's on 1280x768... 1600x900 probably isn't going to happen. For those of you who play bf3 more and know what's the best "playable" settings please let me know.

Sorry for the late response, but I can confirm that both bays are indeed SATA 3 (6Gbps). I'm currently rocking an OCZ Agility 3 120GB Sata 6Gbps in mine, and it's running great. 12 second startup (to desktop), and 6 second shutdown.

No problem LOL.. I've got it sitting here while I move over from the ASUS..

I guess I'm going to do SSD + SSD + HDD since I already have an optical caddy.

I suppose I should put the HDD in the normal bay since that's probably the "coolest" place for it, or somewhere else?

Anyway... hours later I'm finally up & running. Just installing all the Win updates now..

What a PITA this has been..

I installed Win 7 Ult SP1 iso from a SD card, but then my key said upgrade only, not valid for clean installs.. & I used it for clean installs all the time.

Then I do the DVD install & it activates but makes me call the hotline & punch in the numbers on the phone & then on the computer.. I had to do it 3 times because it would hang up in the middle of reading me the numbers to punch in like OMGGGGGGGG

then I had to find a way to copy the Atheros drivers from the ASUS to the Acer since the BT 4.0 b/g/n card that was from eBay wouldn't work in the Acer. What a mess!

I also found out no SATA III in optical bay... so that's where the old 500gb HDD is now.

I've got a checkbook under the second SSD to hold it up better until dremel time.

I love this keyboard. I guess I got lucky there LOL

Haven't done any gaming yet bc waiting for updates & then installing all software.

YouTube runs a lot better though when viewing 1080p.. the time bar loads much faster than on the ASUS. Also, the speaker is 1k times better LOL

Ok smart guys... I dremeled the crap out of the removable battery cover & the ssd still doesn't fit..

APPARENTLY YOU NEED A 7MM SSD, not a regular one

So, I guess that the cover you can buy doesn't have room for a regular SSD either, but only a 7mm one??

For now I have it all closed except that portion of the cover, which I'll tape up if I have to go anywhere.

EDIT: reread some posts... going to remove SSD from casing...

EDIT: worth it to void warranty???

EDIT: apparently the other cover is made for any size - http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/668539-where-can-i-buy-extended-hdd-cover-7750g.html

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...e-can-i-buy-extended-hdd-cover-7750g-kryt.jpg

Anyway... just going to remove the casing =/

Ok.. so I tried various levels of using the SSD casing.. I don't think a 7mm would even fit after all the dremel work.

    So no casing!

& I'll def get on the gameplay.... still doing all the Win updates LOL

I'll tell you this though, I'm running the 12.4 video driver from AMD..hopefully it'll work out okay!

This thing boots about 5-10 secs faster than the ASUS did with SSDs

My battery has really degraded lately. On power-saving I only get around an hour and a half, when just last month I was getting around 2 and a half.

I downloaded BatteryCare and apparently it has a 11.95% wear level! That is most certainly not normal for a laptop only 2-3 months old. The battery has been treated properly, so I don't know what would have caused this.

I'm kind of curious what Acer would say about this. Does the warranty cover this sort of thing? Would my warranty be voided when I installed my extra RAM and SSD?

Problem........ when playing a game, there is a loud buzzing sound coming from the area of HDD bay 2. It is not coming from the SSD though, because the game is not on that drive.

The buzzing starts & stops the very instant I open/close the game or tab in/out of it.

It's not the fan, because the fan is already running & I can hear it just fine.

I suppose it's the CPU or GPU. Would I need to send this into Acer for a free repair? It's a pretty annoying sound.

    BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

It's not a very high pitched buzz either. I may just record a video for you all to hear it.

    I'm thinking it's the GPU.

    EDIT: here's the video - http://youtu.be/6lbtMXhS3RQ

When i ran Furmark on mine at work i heard it, but when i brought it home it either hasn't been quiet enough or it doesn't do it anymore.

It's probably something that would be covered under warranty but it may just be inherent in the design of the gpu

Hopefully, when you look at my account name, you will understand the reason why I am posting here. My bet is that Popeye is gonna know exactly what I need to do.

    Switchable graphics drivers?!

I have been a computer tech for a few years, bought the (and you can guess this) Acer Aspire 7750g-6645 from tigerdirect. Reformatted it, set up all of the drivers and noticed it froze for like an entire minute while watching youtube videos.

Learned more about my laptop and that it had something called switchable graphics; switched from high performance to saving power for chrome and it hasn't occurred since. I was going to check my temperature gauges using speccy, it crashed with some 126 library error.

Cross referencing that error with my laptop, it had something to do with the switchable graphics and blah blah blah.

Found popeyes post on another forums with the modded bios; installed it--- my laptop does not start anymore... just kidding... I enabled PEG only (or whatever it was and changed to muxxed fixed scheme). I stopped receiving errors like with speccy so I considered it a victory.

However, it was also recommended that I pick up leshcat drivers; Upon researching it, I found tons of conflicting posts from different users (stuff like using YAC - I think it was called that), using 12.3 --- using 12.2 --- use the hybrid (up2) or switchable graphics (Whs.s.dshds?).

So, the whole point of this post, is to figure out, what the best course of action would be. Obviously, the ACER drivers are outdated, I would like to not use these. But which version of leshcat should I use and how do I go about installing them (Device manager?) My laptop comes with I5-2450 and HD7670m

    Thanks :)

Thanks for your misplaced confidence in me :)

First leshact's site is still not allowing downloads until he gets it fully going. He switched servers and domain.

I honestly don't know what to tell you with the 7670m. I know I would try pushing one of the newer drivers (7670m only) using device manager. Create a restore point first. I'm assuming you have the OEM driver working right now?

The 12.6 and even 12.7 non-WHQL drivers can be found in the ATI drivers section of the Guru3D.com forum.

Do you know what I mean about pushing the driver with Device Manager?

At this point do not try to install anything through Catalyst Install Manager or update CCC or Intel graphics driver. Only try updating the 7670m through device manager and pointing to the extracted driver folder. You will not need to clean anything this way. Again, create a restore point first so you have a fall back option.

    I will try that :)

    Thanks :)

What is the main difference between WHQL and non-WHQL?

The betas and pre-release (leaked) don't have Windows certification (WHQL).

Have any of you had issues with half second lockups while gaming? It's real similar to a problem i had on my wife's old laptop with power management on the hard drive but i have an SSD so i know it's not that... My wife has the exact same laptop as me loaded with exact same drivers, etc and she doesn't have these problems as me. Only difference is the hard drive and i haven't had time to mess with that.
