    TIP:
I use a wireless X360 controller with the program Xpadder5.3
on both my laptop & desktop as a sort of wireless mouse + mediakey combo

and can offcourse still use it for games (even the ones who don't support)

    Hi people,

I bought an 8930 a couple of weeks ago, and have just had a replacement authorised.

Reported a fault the day I got it, with AC in and power on, the battery was discharging. This was giving me a regular click noise about every second, also noticed the little AC light strip above the power button would pulse with this.

Turned out it was just an underpowered adaptor (they gave me a 65W, should be 90 I think).

Maybe your clicking has something to do with the battery or power supply? Is your laptop drawing more power than is being supplied at times maybe?

I have a replacement 8930G on the way, it should be here Friday.

Hi, what runaround are you getting, I've dealt with this company for quite some time now and aside from the occassional hiccup, 8 rucksacks ordered only 7 in the box, I've had no problems. You should be ringing this number for technical help; Acer 0870 8531000 ...

    Hi,

Thanks for the info, I've got one of their managers emailing me today/tomorrow with an offer.

Don't want to give a full report until the dust has settled, but so far I bought a 'box opened, as new' 8930G, it didn't work properly and wasn't 'as new', sent it back, they fixed it, now arguing about the condition. They really haven't been interested in hearing about it.

I'll let you know how they resolve it in the end.

Can anyone tell me, when installing a 2nd hard drive in the additional bay of the 8930G does it require a bracket?

The original does not have a bracket just some silver paper round it, so you will not need one for the second i think, it must be a tight fit.

I've just moved from Vista Ultimate 32bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on a clean install. Couple of things I need to sort out...I no longer have the ability to adjust all the 5.1 speakers as before, Fingerprint enrolment program allows me to swipe my finger and recognises it but It won't validate. It normaly takes 3 succesful swipes to enrol a fingerprint but after 6 successful swipes it still gives me a red cross. I no longer have any blu ray playback software as it's wiped off the Acer Arcade software (which wasn't good anyway). Any suggestions for cheap 3rd party blu ray playback software would be appreciated!

You need acer eaudio app for sound and you should be able to re-install arcade deluxe from recovery discs if you have made them or from partition. As for fingerprint software I had this same problem and all you need to is push your finger towards screen instead of away and it should work.

    Help, please!

I have purchased a new 8930g laptop with these specifications:
    - Processor: Q9000 a 2Ghz.
    - Memory: 4Gb DDR3 (2xDDR3 modules).
    - Graphics: nvida gforce 9600GT with 1024Mb dedicated.
    - Hard disk: 1x320Gb at 7200rpm.
    - Screen: CineCrystal at 1920x1080.

Laptop is right, but when I run everest benchmark some times I get a 2100 score points (first time everest benchmark get 11200 score points). At this point, laptop is very slow. Just my netbook witha an atom processor like faster...

What about overheating on this notebook?

Not mine fortunatly, but I must say I only use it on AC-power with for performance options enabled and GPU pretty much Overclocked and never have any problems...

only problem/shutdowns occur when using high overclock combined with latest drivers for desktops modded so that it support our mobile gpu

when I found out I went back to latest official laptop driver via nvidia

I have a stock Acer Aspire 8930g laptop.
It has a 500 GB HDD, 64-Bit Windows Vista Home Premium, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (2.0GHz), and up to 2815mb NVIDIA Geforce 9600.

I can start the computer, do stuff for like 5 minutes, than the computer freezes. I wanted to install an update on it "Important for 64bit Systems" and it got to 78% than crashed. I have to press the power button in order to shut it down. I did a standard scan with Avast! when it was working (0 viruses), but now I know it won't be able to complete a full scan. Idk what to do, and I don't play gunz anymore so if you let me know I'd appreciate it.

Have you checked the memory for errors, you can do a memory check in vista, just type memory into the "search program and files" , when you click the windows logo bottom left-hand corner of the screen and click on "windows memory diagnostic" it will re-boot your notebook and test the memory.

If you want a more though check use memtest86+ a free download.

I ran memory diagnostics tool. I think it has to just be shut down (the right way) since I rarely shut it off, and when I have I've usually pressed the button (I'm a hehe) so yea. but I'll let it work its thinggg.

Okay ty news. I did it, and no memory problems were there. I went upstairs, uninstalled unnecessary programs, than came back downstairs. My mom wanted certain on the computer on a disk, so I moved it to the desktop, and right when I went to get the disk it froze again. I'm forced to press the button because control+alt+delete wont work. :|

Acer can use lcd panels from different manufactures , some are better than others for colour, brightness, viewing angle.

I have a CMO panels on my 8930G , you can find out which panel you have with the free PC Wizard.

but I did alot of research, found out it is an:
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9600M-GT.9449.0.html
    65nm die shrink gpu

so technically all other 65nm should be easier to be supported that 55 & 45

a 9800M GTX is the best supported by the bios unfortunatly, because I can get 280M GTX for even beter prices

so are you able to run XP mode on Win7 with your 8930?

ive read on some sites that ACER does not allow BIOS enabling of Virtualization so even if the CPU can run Virtualization the feature is OFF(by default) in the BIOS

im planning on getting the new 8940 with the Core i7 720QM and no XP Virtualization mode is a deal breaker

SONY has blatantly turned virtualization OFF on its laptops rendering XP mode useless on its VIAO line

I know the standard bios doesn't have VT enabled but there is a guide somewhere which tells you how to enable it.

But may I ask what all the fuzz is about?

Why is VT such a big deal for everyone? I do not see which programs use the VT? Must be because I do not use any progs, but nonetheless I would like to know why you would use it?

PS I would go with the 8942 if you are planning on buying a new one. The 8930g also has throttle probs.

My VT has been enabled by following the guide above. Did it a few days back.
Though I have yet to test the XP mode in Win 7.
But I don't see any reason for it not to run.
Just a reminder, Take caution in flashing the BIOS!!!

8930G, If you have an vt enabled cpu and you enable vt using the guide above, also you need to have W7 pro or above to have xp mode, if you have all three then yes.
