Sorry to ask again.
Any recommendations for notebook cooling pad?
Doesn't anyone use a notebook cooler for our mean machine?![]()
Thanks!

Don't get carried away with hardware virtualization (VT enabling) most users do not need it. XP mode in Win 7 is a migration tool for legacy apps that Win 7 compatibility cannot deal with. As such it is not required by many. Virtualization itself is a hot topic but again not everyone needs/uses it. Even if you do different virtualization products work in different ways and in a lot of cases VT support is not required.
Intel are trying to educate manufacturers to allow VT to be exploited but even then not all Intel CPUs support it. For instance the T6400, T6500 and T6600 do not, so tweaking the bios without a CPU swap is of no use (I upgraded my T6400 to get VT as a result of needing to migrate work from my Asus to my Acer).
warnold: When I have looked into coolers they all seem to be up to 17" some of them look like they will work with 18.4" but it is never that clear to me. Do you want the cooler for desktop use or lap? Is portability a requirement? -
Desktop use is fine.
I'm hoping to find something that's going to help bring down temps when I'm gaming. I already cleaned the fan and heatsink, (WHOO! DIRTY!) and still my GPU temps go up to 85C max. Previously 90+!
I'm undervolting my proc, but still throttling kicks in after a while.
I was looking at NZXT Cryo LX, looks very nice. But will set me back up to 120+ USD because of shipping. Can't find a local retailer here in my country.
I'm going to buy a good thermal compound as well, maybe AS5 or MX-2 and hopefully it helps. What do you guys think? -
Don't waste money on notebook stands ;-)
Building it yourself is way more fun and cheaper!
Be sure to figure out how high you want your notbook to stand and make sure the grabbers at the bottom are high enough for the notebook (about 4 cm).
I used 2 cm thick wood, 40 CM perforated metal plate (5 mm holes), 2 X 36 cm wooden support beams, 1 x coolermaster fan (which came with an extra Y-connector: 4-pin molex male, 4-pin molex female and a 3 pin female.)
a connection for a 12V adapter (I used a nail and a small metal plate, inside a hole deep enough for the adapter yet not all the way through, then I drilled at an angle with a smaller drill from the other side, to position the plate add the nail to the center and voila, just be sure it all fits before you install ;-) )
You might even want to add a USB hub and art into the woodwork.
TIP: Be sure to use a 4-pin Molex connector to attach to the fan, that way you can easily replace the fan at a later date. Or use the connector to connect yet another fan, for dual cooling.
I use just one fan, which brings down temps a few degrees.
As long as your 85 C is stable it's fine.
To connect it all to the adapter I took one 4 pin molex from an old PSU and connected it to the adapter. I then got 12V 4-pin molex, allowing me to connect and replace fans at will.
I'm currently using a a adapter with a voltage switch, I can switch from 1.5v to 12V which allows for settings between super quiet to hurricane.
The only downside is that the adapter only supplies 300 mA, adding another fan would decrease the speed of both fans.
This flaw could be improved with a better adapter (if need be, adding your own POT-meter to regulate the fan speed). -

So heres my situation: I wanted to reformat my 8930g to factory default so I rebooted to the splash screen, hit alt+f10 and proceeded to use the d2d recovery, it finished and rebooted as normal. However now the system keeps rebooting to the erecovery screen but now the only option is to exit it. The "recover to default manufacter's" and "recover to user's backup" are not available. On top of that my recovery cd's seem to be faulty, because when I try to boot to CD and install it runs at 10mb/min for about an hour then stops and says "recovery failed".
I'm grasping at anything now. If anyone knows where I can find a recovery CD img to download and burn or anything else please let me know!
HELP! -
Thanks for the suggestion guys! I'll see if I can make myself a custom cooling pad then. Or buy a cheap one and modify it with better fans.
@tinderbox, you got your unit replace / repaired? So are the core temperatures reading correctly now?
I'm using bios v1.13, I actually can't remember if it was different when I was using v1.10. I'm not sure if I have seen the TZ00 TZVR TZVL TZ01 in Hwmonitor before. Anyone with v1.10 bios can check temperatures in Hwmonitor? -
Also while im at it ive been trying to find the serial number for my laptop so I can get the windows 7 upgrade from the acer site, however the label on the bottom of my laptop is blank. Either ive never noticed overtime and the label just erased itself from the heat, or it just never had one underneath. Ive sent an email to the Acer site 5 times explaining that Acer Esettings does not display the proper Serial number.. something like 123456789012, but they keep sending me the same email telling me to look under the laptop or use esettings.
Help! -
@jayeff, I don't know if the recovery disc can be downloaded anywhere, I don't think so. Most people here would suggest just reformatting with a new and better / clean OS like Win7 64-bit (wohoo! super fast!), but I think you might have a good reason of wanting to bring it back to factory default.
Can you try bring it back to service centre? I'm pretty sure they will reformat it to default (they mostly think this is the solution to MOST of our problems! haha!).
Do you need to copy data from you laptop? -

If you could get your hands on an Vista32-64 dvd and somebody could send you the pre-activated key, made with the program ABR, unless you are just going to use Win7.
You have a Vista32 key on the bottom of your notebook, the ony thing you have lost is the pre-activated key, which as i said you can get a copy from somebody with an 8930 with ABR.

oh no no, by serial number I mean the actual serial number to the laptop itself, not the windows vista serial number. I just dont get how i can turn off d2d recovery in the boot menu and it still goes to eRecovery Management screen with no options but to exit.

The replacement has the same problem, the cpu core temps do not change unless you re-boot or sleep and resume.
I have decided i can live with it as i love my 8930G so much.

You have lost the serial number on the bottom of the notebook? if so their is one on the box, and i think also on the bios main page.
-
No i didnt keep the box, the sticker on the bottom of the laptop is white with nothing on it, and the bios page displays 1234567890123456789012 as my serial number, which is not right.
Is there a way to look at my partitions without having windows installed? Every time it goes to install from my broken recovery disks it chooses partition 3.. which i remember before it always used number 2. Could be a partition problem. -

Your not having much luck.
It looks like you are just going to have to re-install, see my previous post below.
-
Well ill work on finding vista cds somewhere. It would be alot easier to get the acer windows 7 upgrade from the site but without a serial number they wont do anything for me.
Thanks for trying -

So has anybody got their free W7 upgrade , do you get all the software and does it work, as the Acer website only has launch manger
-
Im still waiting for my Windows 7 upgrade to be delivered! I have the RC installed on my second harddrive; and as far as I could tell, everything was working fine
-
I got my upgrade today, and decided to go ahead with it. Everything worked great that i noticed. Did a clean install and for the most part its working fine. Its fast, games run great and movies work spot on. However, i have no empowering technolgy framework, which i want. My email button doesn't work and i want to switch the webbrowser to Firefox. The fingerprint reader is not working properley, it can take over 30 swipes to logon which is annoying as hell. No audio, well i have audio but i want the same software as i had with Vista, it isn't as loud anymore. No touchpad software, i had to use Vistas. Wondering about Chipset drivers as i haven't seen any.
So i payed £12.80 for a free upgrade, that turned out to be a cardboard sleeve with 2 discs and not enough driver/software support. Got a 64bit ultimate on a seperate partition and as soon as the software comes i'll use that.
Hi btw, i'm mike and i love my 8930g -
I got mine today also.
* empowering technology framework - Try Acer website
* Fingerprint reader - Try swiping your finger the wrong way, if that works there is a simple patch you need to apply, it is referenced in this thread somewhere.
* Audio - Realtek have released a new version of their software available on their website, brings same functionaltiy to Windows 7
* Touchpad - Had no issues with it, mine is working fine but I use a mouse anyway.
I recommend visiting the Acer support page and downloading all the neccessary drivers etc - be sure to select Windows 7 as your operating system.
Regards -
I do check the Acer site regularly as i have a Windows 7 x64 Ultimate install on a seperate partition that still needs drivers.
The empowering Technology Framework is only out for Vista, it installs on Windows 7 but doesn't load.
Fingerprint reader is still the same, backwards doesn't register at all and forward swiping still takes a lifetime to logon.
Touchpad worked but without the driver the scroll function didn't.
Will look at the Realtek site for the Audio and just play the waiting game for the rest.
cheers -
I got my upgrade today, but judging by peoples comments, i don't think i'm gonna bother until Acer pull their finger out and get some new drivers released.
-
HI there,
I don't have the 8930 but the 8730 and I've got a "small" problem.
I have upgraded from Vista x86 to WIndows 7 x64. Everything is working fine now (after a lot of work) BUT once thing.
The Volume throttle does not work at all. The mute, play/pause, rew, ff and stop buttons work, but not the volumen.
Is there anyone experiencing the same problem?
and if so, have you been able to sort this out?
Thanks -
touchpad working fine too, use the new driver off synaptics website

Hey Everyone
it sems that my CPU is acting strange it keeps goinig from 1992.95 Mhz to 1197.00Mhz contstantly every couple of seconds
any help figuring out what is doing this would be appreciated
Thanks -
could be due to background processes..
but mine stays 1197 and only jumps when needed:
for example new firefox page / downloads etc.
and offcourse with a emulator or game it stays 1995 so it's normal
but to much and without reason, could be bad

Run taskmanger and click on processes and select all users , and see if you can find what is causing the problem.

Hi All, i recieved my upgrade disc at the weekend and tried to do an upgrade rather than the full clean install, it wouldn't have it and kept crashing at the same point, so i ended up with a clean install onto drive d. Anyone know why Bios will not let me choose the boot sequence between c and d? It came with 2 harddrives which Bios seems to see as IDE 0 and will not let me choose one to boot from.
Russ -
first backup all extreme important stuff to usb or dvd, then remove all partition using the windows7 install wizard and voila a clean drive...
and in you're case you have ide1 probably as a data disk -
Thanks for the help it looks like it may have been a Logitech setpoint proccess that was causing the problem shut it down no more jumping every second
-
Upgraded from Vista Ultimate 32 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit with what I thought was a clean install. I noticed that there were 5 or so partitions when I had to decide which to use ( I have the 640GB version with 2x 320GB HDDs), one was about 11GB in size and was labelled PQ or something similar....couId I or should I have deleted all partitions prior to installing to ensure a perfectly clean install???

hello somebody try to upgrade gpu on acer 8930g,
-
I'm thinking about upgrading my graphic card on my 8930g but the mobo only has a mxm II connector and the best cg I can find with mxm II are 9600M GT and Radeon 3650. I'm quite desperate ^^ I you find some better mxm II gpu tell me (^_^)
-
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
I thought the 8930G was MXM-III
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=396320 -
i think yes mxm III 2.1 i found on eurocom gtx 260m mxmIII,but i think the problem is heatsink because this card is 75W and 9600m gt is 23 W
-
Well it seems some 8930G are MXM III but I've unplugged my cg in order to change my thermal paste and the connector did look like a MXM II one... I might be mistaken. Tomorrow I'll try to post some pics of my cg connector.

Just did a clean install with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and have reinstalled some of the previous software most of which seems to work fine. I've reinstalled Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 Ultra but can no longer play Blu ray discs. When I try and play one I get the essage saying that the disc in drive F is in a format unsupported by Power DVD 9. It worked fine before. The drive itself works with DVD's but seems to have a problem with blu ray. How can I fix this?? Can't find any drivers on Acer's site. It's an HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CT10N.
Any help would be appreciated!! -
I had the same problem you're having now. I found two ways to fix it. Try to DL Acer Arcade Deluxe it's a freeware but quite uneasy to find. Or try Arcsoft total media theater. Both of them work fine to play Blu-Ray disks. Bye!!
