do you mean the option on the taskbar for 6 or 2 speakers , i lost it too when i upgraded to W7, but blu-ray playback does seem to use more than 2 speakers.

Also i tried a sound calibration dvd , and 5 of the speakers work only the tuba was silent, but blu-ray playback sound great so the tuba must be working.

Do you guys know if our 8930g have sata or sata ii?

I'm planning to buy an SSD that is sata ii compatible, I don't if would be able to maximize it's use since it's still quite expensive.

I know a few people here have installed SSD's on their machine. I know the performance is definitely better. But can anyone comment if they are able to maximize the ssd drive speed?

The 8930G uses a INTEL PM45 chipset with an ICH9 controller that is SATA2 compatible.

    Thanks for the info Tinderbox!

Now another question, I might post this on the thread on SSD's as well. It got me thinking when I saw a 500GB 7200rpm Hdd at only half the price of the 128GB SSD that I was looking at. My 8930 currently has 2 320GB 5400rpm hdd.

I know the SSD is really pricey, but maybe someone can comment if I should go for it, or just settle for the 7200rpm HDD.

Don't know about a SSD but I got 2x of these in my lappie and I am still happy. All working as it should and the best part is you have 1TB with you where ever you go.

Power consumption doesn't matter for me so I didn't do any tests.

But according to Seagate they only draw .05 more power than a regular 5400 rpm drive.

Once you remove the hdd cover off the notebook the hdd drives just pull right out, no screws or drive cages or anything, just plug in the replacement, put the cover back on, and install the os.

Though i did read of one 8930 owner have problems with 2 identical hdd`s running slow for some reason, maybe in this thread somewhere.

Hi, I finally need to ask a question :) I've just purchased a Linksys WAG320n wireless adsl modem/router, however, despite the router being 5ghz and draft-n, the laptop only communicates at 54mbps. Has anyone had any experience with this, I know distance can be a factor but the router is right next to the laptop, is there something I'm missing?
    Cheers,
    Chris

possible dumb answer to a good question chriscatt but would it be anything to do with the max speed of the wireless card in the laptop?

Hi, thanks but the spec for the wireless is: Wi-Fi – 802.11 a/g/draft-n even if there is a compatability problem I should be getting at least 108mbps...

A new bios is available v1.14 , though i do warn against flashing it unless you have a problem that requires it, as you could kill your notebook if it goes wrong.

I dont know what changes their are, I wonder if it has VT support?

Just installed it. Virtualization is not enabled, but they improved temperature readings. Before the CPU core temps were too low (CPU temp was OK, though). Now they are more realistic (36-40).

I grabbed the Windows flashing software from older BIOS releases, replaced the old BIOS file with the new one and flashed. Worked like a charm and didn't had to boot to DOS. This was on a venerable 32-bit Windows XP, though.

I just flashed to v1.14 ,as said above the download did not include the windows flasher and i had to use the flasher from v1.13.

The reason i flashed is because my cpu core temprature only changes when i do a re-boot or sleep then resume.

V1.14 did not fix my problem :(

Just realized that my cores stay always at the same temperature. Before they were locked at 9 and 13. Now at 36 and 40. Let's take that as an improvement.

A note about the TV Tuner (AverMedia A309 in my laptop):

The most popular driver on the Internet for XP 32-bit is 1.0.0.36. This driver sucks. The card is as deaf as a wall with it.

There is hidden somewhere in the Internet a new 1.0.0.61 version which makes the card run under XP as good as it does in Vista and 7 with their newer drivers. Exact same sensitivity.

I've got my 1.0.0.61 drivers through DriverMax, but haven't been able to find them through Google. I can upload them if someone wants them.

    what are security settings

for draft n to work I believe that you must run the following security settings

    Security must be WPA-PERSONAL
WPA MODE must be WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK
    CIPHER Type must be AES

try those settings i was connecting at 54Mbbs after changing to these settings went to 175Mbps

    hope this helps

I had the same problem. The way to solve it is very simple. Download the v1.13 from acer website. In the folder there's a software from insyde which allows you to flash your bios. Copy the software and all its dll to your bios V1.14 and then run the insyde software. It worked very well for me on W7 ultimate 64 bit. Bye

Does anyone know how many slots for RAM we have?
Most of us here currently have 4GB of ram.
Is it configured 2x2GB and all slots taken?
I know this sounds insane wanting to do this, but just curious on the possibility of adding more, like there are available 4GB sodimms right?

    Thanks for that post emanon!
I was thinking whether to buy a 500GB 7200rpm drive or is it really wise to buy a 120GB SSD which costs twice as much instead.

Keep us posted if ever you try out the 4GB of ram on each slot!

i have found a problem with the 1.14 bios update on my 8930g
the audio controls on the left of the keyboard don't work.
the volume doesn't work at all and the mute intermittently
also once the mute is on it wont switch back off.
flashed back to 1.13 and its all working again

I'm having the same problem too; but I remember this was a problem in the old bios too and the fix was something like switching off and taking the battery out for 30 seconds; I can't remember the exact process and Im too lazy to read through 80 pages again to find out :D I might do the same thing as you and flash back to 1.13 - Isn't downgrading risky btw?

The option is available in the bios but I havn't used it yet, press F2 while booting up to find it.

Why o why? Aren't they testing these BIOS before releasing it?
I might try flashing it since I'm going to reformat my Win 7 again anyway. If ever I get the 1.14 working properly after my clean install, I'll let you guys know.
Although we don't know what other benefits this new bios have, and most of doesn't really considering doing a reformat.

I got my free Win7 and driver/software upgrade dvd today, took 14 days from ordering to delivery :) , anyway i already had Win7_32bit installed so i just installed the driver/software updates , see picture below for what was installed after telling the installer what model Acer i had.

EDIT : The included Cyberlink Power DVD v8.0 is blu-ray compatible, so it gives us an alternative to Acer Arcade Deluxe.
