A little off topic but could someone please explain networking to me. I set up my son and daughters laptops on my 10meg broadband. Now if i download with no computers on except mine I get the full speed but as soon as one more computer connects to the net all I can download at is a rate of about 100kbs even if all they are doing is chatting and not actually downloading files.

    Hi Karl,
I've upgraded to 2x2 GB. I got the first memory module, the pc3-8500f. I assume our laptop cannot handle 1600mhz ram unless the fsb is overclocked. And I don't know how at all. BTW the hyperX 1600mhz is in fact running at 1333mhz and an Intel XMP profile at 1600mhz is avaible, actually these modules were designed for i7 lappies. The hyperX 1066mhz is designed for us but I can't find a way to enable XMP... may be it's because I don't have a Core 2 Extreme (it seems to be necessary but I'm not sure). We could try with Intel Extreme tuning Utility, but I cannot manage to find a DL link... Hope this helped.

PS : The heatsinks on my new memory modules are quite effective

    Cheers

    Hi
im running an extreme core 2 duo in my lappy but i know its not using the extreme side of things if you know what i mean , but i guess putting this new ram in would not utilise the extreme overclock benefits of the new chip as there needs to be a bios update , guess acer wont be doing that !!
So is it worth the upgrade ?
    cheers

Well, to be honnest I think it is worth if you find these module at a cheap price (I managed to do it on a french website some days ago). My score on WEI has jumped, the games load faster, the benchmarks are really better. Well, whenever you've got some money to spend, it's a good investment.
I also think acer won't update his 8930g bios to a good one, so the only chance for you to fully unleashed the power of your X9100 is to try intel XTU. There are a lot of pics on google, but I didn't manage to find a donwload link, may be you will.

    You can download it here.

Don't know if it works though!... it seems its just a little program to read out and change the bios and since acer locks everything I question if it works.

I'm at work and don't have my lappie with me so can't test it.

Well I've got an asus p7p and intel XTU is provided with the cd and it is automaticly enabled. I tried to install it on my lappy but of course this version was designed for p55 desktop chipset.

    Hi again,

i've recently thought of upgrading the proc & ram for this laptop, i've got a windows 7 upgrade CD on the way anyway, what would you say is the best RAM this laptop will support & i think im going to go for the X9100 because of the 3.06GhZ processing power and its pretty cheap.

Also can anyone confirm if this laptop can handle 8GB of memory or even 6?

Hi im new to this forum so hello all, i have the 8930g with these two main specs that concern me:

A centrino core duo t660 2.2ghz and only 3gb of DDR compared to the seemingly standard 4gb.

The games i play which are mainly left for dead 2 and assasins creed 1 glitch pretty bad in places suffering very high slowdown or stuttering, almost like the acer is struggling to keep up, is there an easy fix or would a processor/ram upgrade be an option?

Also the fan becomes pretty hot and loud in a short space of time.

Thanks in advance for any help.

A big thanks for the help throttle stop is brilliant it has completely solved any issues with L4D2, assassins creed runs much better but the acer is still struggling with it though which makes me think its my specs.

Im a console fan and im used to putting in a game and playing it with no issues being involved but having played games on my shiny big 8930 ive got the pc bug too, is all this processor, memory upgrade business easy enough to do and does it cost the earth?

Maxiboi im not sure if we have one of the lower spec processors and RAM hence our performance issues, do you play L4D with a kb/mouse or joypad? i found the kb/mouse makes much more sense.

Hi, ive found that 4GB of RAM Rated at 1333MhZ ( Max PM45 can take to my knowledge! ) costs £95 from overclockers.co.uk & I plan on upgrading to the Intel X9100 Core 2 Duo Extreme ( 3.0GhZ ) for £179 off ebay, from some guy in thailand people on this topic have bought from him before and haven't been scammed so i feel safe to some extent.

Yes, we have one of the lower spec processors & RAM, i play L4D on kb/mouse. i own a ps3 and games such as Modern Warfare 2 which i would find so much better with a mouse and keyboard tbh.

ty for the info is it true that you only benefit from going to 4gb DDR or higher if you have vista 64 bit instead of 32?

Please let me know how you get on, an 18.4 blu ray lappy thats great at playing games is pretty sweet.

yes it's true but 64 bit brings a whole new load of problems which doesn't really make it worth it you can see the difference in 32 bit.

i've got the crapper version of yours mines DVD RW only.

running 64 bit shouldnt add any more problems
unless you wanting to run very old programs
i have been running 64bit since march 07 and havent had any real problems with it and that was running on my old HP laptop with 2gig ram

I'm running 64 bit for almost two years (vista then seven and also linux) and there are only a few problems which are not so difficult to cope with. Most of the time all the x86 soft are compatible with 64 bit or if they aren't, a x64 version may be available.

Im going to have a good look around for places that may take the parts i dont want and shave some off the price of my upgrades in exchange, i can think of a number of independants that may do it, having a search on the the net and getting help from here it looks like that the main benefit to my system right now would be a processor upgrade.

Unless upgrading to vista 64 bit would be worth it just to get extra DDR

Went into a Novatech store today and the guy said my laptop was pretty much non upgradeable, a better processor will overheat the motherboard, extra ram wont make a difference, dont bother with win 64 bit, he suggested selling it and buying a better one, wonder if he had one in his store in mind hmmm.

Hmmm, I think the guy might have had other motives, there are tonns of people here with the same motherboard but with more ram, better processors and I don't see them having heat issues? Personally I have the P8600 processor 2.4 Ghz I think and 4GB DDR3 ram, Windows 7 64Bit; my heat is just fine :D

Well I upgraded my 8930g to a x9100 3.06 Ghz Core Duo Extreme (like many others here) and have no regrets. The laptop absolutely flies for me and I use it many for music production. I keep trying to kid myself that I need a new PC (so I can have a bigger screen as my eyesight isn't what it used to be) but my 8930g has blu-ray and VT enabled so I can run WinXP Mode and feels like it is a pretty powerful laptop.

It's also a thing of great beauty too... :D

Do you do the upgrades yourself or do you buy the parts and get a technician do it? There will be many q's from me here if i do it myself lol.

Getting win 7 64 bit is going to be my first step so i can benefit from 4 gig ddr, ive heard of some great processors mentioned here, to settle on one which would
be the best to make running games like crysis effortless?

If you can use a screwdriver, then you can easily take the service panel from the rear of the 8930g. With that removed, you can upgrade/add hard drives as easily as slotting them into the SATA connector.

With the removal of five or six screws, the heat pipe and cooling system can be removed and swung out and the CPU can be upgraded. It really is a 5 minute job.

Depending on your model of 8930g, there might be a spare mini PCIe slot available. In that you could put in a TV tuner or some other compatible PCIe board.

The GPU upgrade is a bit more tricky, not because of the removal of the heatsink, but finding a compatible MXM graphics card unit. There's a lot of debate on what GPU units might be compatible. As far as I know, I haven't heard of anyone upgrading their GPU in the 8930g.

The same goes for the memory as there is some debate on whether or not the 8930g is compatible with 8Gb of RAM and that the preinstalled 4Gb is maxeing out already.

I love the 8930g because it is the first laptop I've ever owned where I've been able to upgrade the CPU and give it another 5 years of life.

But remember, you do all of this at your own risk...

upgraded my processor to a X9100 a few months back now and its the best thing i could of done to my lappy , well happy with it , not had any issues with heat ..
Have also fitted an SSD hard drive and installed windows 7 64bit , boots up in around 17 seconds and everything opens so much quicker now thanks to the ssd !!
Well worth upgrading your 8930 and getting a few more years use out of it :)

If it isn't too much trouble, I suggest you backup all your data etc and just clean install Win 7 64bit. I've read on the net that "upgrade" installs cause unneccessary issues and it takes forever; I didnt take the chance and did a clean install. Hope you sort out your problem.

I have rencently updated to Windows 7 and have the latest realtek sound drivers.

Am I right in thinking the HDMI port does not output multichannel audio or have I got a drive issue?

I notice in the HDMI properties it just shows ""L R HDMI Digital Jack" Seems a bit pants that I have to also use the optical out cable thats as bad as SKY HD :D

    I have a problem with my 8930...

2 Days ago, everything went perfectly smooth (exept for throttling issue)
So today I fired up Dragon Age Origins and experienced a low fps even @ medium settings.

Now I went into GPU Z and found my 9700m GT to be stuck @ 400Mhz Core clock, 300Mhz Memmory clock and 800Mhz Shader clock.
Fan speed @ 100% and temps never go above 52°C ==> Never get's stressed...

I really don't know what I can do about this. DOes anybody know what tot do or have the same issue?
I run windows 7 (legit) with 186.82 driver version.

For anybody who wants to know; Someone found a workaround to the brightness adjustment issues with the new nvidia drivers

    Press + Hold "Fn"
Press F6 + Left/Right Arrow (Brightness up/down) .. you may need to to this step multiple times to reach your desired brightness

NOTE: When you press F6 while holding Fn the display will turn off but will turn back on as you press the arrow keys!

Well don't wanna spoil the fun there, but gpu-Z always shows default gpuys-powersave settings... with gpu-tool you can test and know for sure, I also use RivaTuner statistics for showning me realtime info.. and its always on 400 unless i run a program/game that uses the GPU then my onscreen display indicator jumps towards my 675mhz Overclock

    EDIT:
Unless you had Dragon Age running in window-mode, than you can indeed Alt-tab and check Gpu-Z

    Hi!
I want to know if I can upgrade my 8930G with:
    X9100
    8 GB RAM
    1 TB HDD
    64 GB SSD Intel
(nVidia Quadro VideoCard, I'm trying to find a card that will be compatible with the MXM 2 III slot, but I can't, someone know anyone?).
I use my laptop as a workstation.

Someone know if that upgrades will be sucessfull? Thanks

You really do have many options for transfering files

The quickest way is to get an drive enclosure with esata you can then take the HD out of your PC place into the enclosure and then just copy from the drive to your laptop.

Or you can plug in another drive using esata or usb2 and transfer files from pc to drive to laptop

Or you can get a 16Gb pendrive and transfer files from pc > drive > laptop

Or you can use a cross over cable

Or you can use a normal patch lead or powerline adapter and a hub or switch and transfer them over the network

Or you can transfer them over your wireless network

Or you can get a 2.5" drive bay for you pc and put the laptop hd in this bay and copy files from pc to drive :D

Processor should work fine, I do believe 4Gb is the limit, Not sure about 1Tb drive but you could install 2x 500Gbs, SSD Drive will work (or thats means you can have 2x 500 :D). Though there are some gpus that wil fit the 8930 the availabity is limited and costs are generally higher. To be honest you would be better not wasting money on upgrading and invest the money in a new laptop. The cost of all your upgrades will cost more then a new machine which could actually have higher spec for less.

Easy - and I used the original guide that was linked on here. Yes, you need a steady hand and a strong heart (well, peace and quiet for concentration), but this is a 10 minute job, depending how long it takes you to download python for Windows.

Hi all, still kinda new to this site!
Alright here's the deal. I've had this laptop for a little under a year. I got Windows 7 HP 64-bit on it. Lately I've been trying to enable the Virtualization Technology. I read that I'm not the only one with this problem, SO...
I contacted Acer support (yippee) and the first thing they brought back was this:
"Thank you for contacting Acer America. I’ll be happy to assist you.

I have checked your system serial number it shows the system is in warranty.

I understand that you would like to enable the Intel Virtualzation technology.

Please note that your Notebook model does not support the Intel Virtualzation technology."
 Sorry, right in the product description, it says the thing supports it! I just sent them Intel's product specs of the processor. I even asked Acer if there was a BIOS update/patch/tool that would enable this, and that's the response I got.
I love the laptop, and not having VT will not cause me to throw it out the window and drive my car over it, but it's something I'd like to be able to access! :)
If anyone knows of any way other than marcan's way, it'd be a HUGE favor!! (Yes, I will admit. I am afraid to tamper with the BIOS without supervision :err: )

It's the only way to enable VT. You have to hack the BIOS because it seems that Acer won't release a BIOS that will automatically enable VT for those who have processors that are capable of it.

The BIOS hack is relatively simple if you follow the instructions precisely, but if you have any doubt about doing it, then don't.

tbh the process for enabling VT in the guide above is virtually all automated so you can't really go wrong. You can't accidently set the wrong bit/byte etc it does it all for you.

Yeah, I just finished up Acer. By the time it was done, they were trying to tell me it's the O.S. instead of the BIOS and that I needed to pay for their support. Yeah right!

Just finished the flash and got the VM up and running smoothly. I'm installing XP on the VM right now! The only problem I'm having is one with the disc, but no worries!
    Thanks all!
