I recently connected my 8930 to a new 42" LCD tv using the HDMI connection.

I find that on the TV the display seems to be to big (eg the windows top bar and bottom task bars are off the screen) and cannot see any adjustment facility in the control panel to correct it.

Has anyone else experienced this and maybe have a solution?

To PEWE, depending on the make of your monitor, you might have to rename the HDMI input to DVI-PC. That will make your desktop fit the screen perfectly.

If you have not recovered the CMOS pwd yet, there is a Live CD to recover it. It worked for me with a previous Acer laptop, and I don't know if it does wih 8930g. It is called PCCMOSCleaner:

    you need 2x 2gig ram
the 8930g has a max of 4 gig(2gig per slot) i dont think anyone has got one running with 8gig(4gig per slot)
you want 1066mhz(even though is only running at 800mhz on this laptop with the cpu u have)

I'm looking at getting one of these, a few questions:

What is the battery life like with some heavy use (Not playing games though)?

What is Ubuntu compatibility like, what is the battery life when running that?

I have seen people mention upgrading it, is this easy? Can any part be replaced? I'm getting a 2nd-hand one so there isn't a warranty.

What is the track pad like? Is it anywhere near the wonderful macbook track pad?

What is portability like? I'll be taking this on the bus to college, I won't do much moving around at college but would the bulk eventually get annoying?

    Anything else I should know?

    Thanks in advance.

Right then, anything I should install or tweak to improve performance?

Okay, been a few months since my last post, so here goes...
At the risk of becoming redundant, I'd like to see if anyone's had any improvements in the Windows 7 battery life killer problem. I ran a very, VERY simple test this morning. Disabled the driver called "Microsoft ACPI-control method battery." Had no battery icon/estimated life indication, BUT the battery lasted 66 minutes to the second as opposed to the 25 minutes and some change I was getting previously. The official Windows forum about this problem hasn't had any major conclusions since their first "It's the manufacturer's fault" claim.

Added injury to insult, Microsoft posted a link to a battery life analyzer tool. I tried it, and it told me there was a problem with my battery and that the screen brightness should be lowered for battery life. So, nothing new, just slapping me in the face with what I already know! And this is coming from PAID employees of Microsoft! :mad2:

I'm going to get a new battery since it seems like the only solution at this point, but on that battery, I would almost be afraid to enable ACPI with it in!

One more possible solution, would it be feasible (or logical) to install a second HDD in the extra slot in the case and install Ubuntu on it? From what I've read, Ubuntu hasn't killed batteries on laptops post-Windows 7.

Thoughts? Comments? Ridicule?? :D haha, not really, none of that please! :D

I have an acer 8930g and i can't find a solution for my problem-the 4 side buttons(bluetooth, e-mail etc) dont work anymore. When i press the buttons nothing happens. When i try to install the blutooth driver it's says no bluetooth hardware found. All those wore workink. I'm using vista home premium 34bit with everything(driver, acer app.) installed from the acer support site.
Is there anyway to activate those buttons, what i'm not doing wright?

I'm thinking that the connector for those buttons is loose/off. When I get home tonight I'll send you the pdf I have (if it doesn't violate this site's terms). It's a service manual that's pretty in-depth.

On a side note, do you have Dritek Launch Manager installed? Lol and is it 32 or 64 bit? Part of your problem is vista, IMHO

Thank you very much for replay. I have vista home premium 32 bit, the original OS. I also had Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and the same problem. When i first received it everything was fine but after. i send it to warranty for a hinge cover replacement and since i received it back the problem started. I have lunch manager installed. I hope the connector is loose/off, do u have any idea how hard is to get there?
    Thanks for help!

alright, well, the service manual is too big to attach! >.< but just search for Acer Aspire 8930Q Service manual (There's an 8930Q and an 8930. They're basically the same and from the same site)
Now, did you install Win7, then revert to Vista?
And yea, it'll probably be a day's project, but if you sent it to Acer, there's a VERY GOOD possibility that they knocked something else off (my CineDash touch cover is coming off. It's held on by literally nothing right now...until I Gorilla Glue that sucker! :D )

Agreed. Also, it might be a heat problem. I know on mine there's some kind of cover on them. So if anything just find a cover or a heatsink (if existing) or anything that would assist in dissipating the heat. I also believe there's a screen over the grille for the memory, or there is on mine at least. It MIGHT be beneficial to remove that

Ah, how long have you had it?/What warranty do you have on it? Bc I bought mine last June, and sent mine in for a clicking noise (case fan) in December of the same year. When I (finally) got it back in January, they told me my warranty was up. So I would check with them before you send it in...might be a lot more $$$ than you/I think!

Hi, can anyone help me with a serious problem i got with my 8930g: it does not power on.
I bought it in june last year, upgraded it to windows 7 and used it with very few problems until last week, when all of a sudden it abruptly powered off and would not turn on again. I tried the static release trick that i read somewhere, but i fear my problem is more serious. On the pc no lights come on. On the power unit the green light still comes om fine. Battery was also fine just before the crash. I suspect some fuse went inside the pc or the motherboard has a problem. I'd like to fix it myself rather than sending it in. Can anyome give me some advice? The only thing that happens when i plug the power unit into the pc is that there is a very slight ticking noise from near the on/off switch, about as slight as a pocket watch. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Curehead

    P.s. Warranty expired

well ive taken out the mem and put it back in and ran it with just 2gb of mem and all seems fine the machine is quiet with no screen shut down problems, with 4gb ive noticed the fan is louder the second you boot up, i think like you say it may be a heat prob cos ive played burnout paradise with my nvidia reaching 76 degrees and thers has been no screen probs but this might be because ive not screwed the access panel back on which may be acting as good ventilation perhaps?

or maybe re inserting it all helped

You should bring your notebook to the service. It looks like the cables in the power connector are torn.
I also have this problem a few months ago and I see this connector. The cables are really thin.

    Hi,

I'm the proud owner of an Aspire 8930G for over a year now, but since I installed Windows 7 x86 Pro a few months ago, I keep having problems with the audio drivers.

This is the situation: i'm using Skype with camera every evening, everything works fine untill I start some other audio channel (this can be a standard game, some avi file, mp3 or anything). Slowly the whole computer keeps slowing down untill I have no other option then to reboot it, and start all over again.

I tried everything: disabling audio enhancements, restarting Windows Audio (only works for a while), disabling HD Audio in Device Manager, chaning the energy settings...
The only thing I can't seem to manage is to lower the priority of the audiodg.exe process, it keeps giving me access denied.

I also managed to find out, that with the new Realtek drivers, my laptop shuts down at random moments. I do think it has something to do with the heat.. Is there any known problem with latest Realtek drives that heaten up the system?

Now, is there any fix that really works? I tried to do everything, but the problem keeps occurring...

Is it true that the 8930g with the T6600 (2.2 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) CPU and the 9700M GT 512MB struggles to play COD 5 World At War ?

cant see how audio driver would heat up the laptop
shuting down ramdomly is more likely a driver error
i have no problems with the realtek driver here

all depends what you want it for i got the 8930g cos i was drawn to the nice big screen and blu ray player, i also dont mind plonking it down on a train table to use when im travelling, i know the little netbooks are the the trend for that sort of thing but im quite happy to use mine anywhere.

The one i'm thinking of has the same specs as yours in your sig.

Does the fan make much noise when it spins up and does it push alot of air as a friend had a large Rock laptop a few years ago and that was like a Hairdryer running and it used to blow paper across the desk. :D

And have you tried Call of Duty 5 World at War as somebody suggested it wil struggle with that game because of the T6600 only has 2mb of cpu cache.

    Thanks
