np, the fan can get quite loud when playing games but so does a ps3 or xbox when its chucking polygons around, normal surfing and light tasks wont send it into over drive, ive tried a COD demo and it seemed to run fine with the odd stutter here or there, a free program can help with some struggles its called throttlestop which you can google for.

The fan gets a bit louder when playing a blu ray but nothing to write home about and the fan doesnt send anything flying across the desk

Thanks jon.c good to hear that the fan is not on high all the time :)

Are you running yours on a laptop cooler as i planned on running it on a standard hard desktop so not to have the noise of a laptop cooler aswell. ?

im not that adventurous or rich to start cutting holes in stuff lol

Does the power supply get really hot when running straight off the mains without the battery installed as i see alot of posts about blown power bricks.

Most laptops are designed to be able to run straight of the mains without the the battery but i too wonder if thats ok for the 8930g as it must draw alot of power due to it's size and Graphics card.

No it does not accept the Core i CPU's. Instead you can use virtually all the core 2 duo cpu's available. I have an P9700 and an very happy with the battery drain and speed it offers. Here is a list.

Thanks for the quick replies... they've given me a better understanding.

but i am not bothered about the power saving issue, as I have my laptop plugged in when in use.

which would be the best processor for my laptop? and also is quad better than duo??
i see from the intel website the 'xtreme' editions of processors seems to be the power fullest if so it looks like theres two choices...

    - X9100
    - QX9300

i am kinda new to processors and don't understand all of the bus speeds and cache.... any help would once again be welcomed

here are my specifications as a reminder:

    Acer Aspire 8930G 584G32Bn
    T5800 2.0 ghz core 2 duo
    4gb ddr3 ram

    320gb hdd
    512 mb geforce 9600M GS

If your 8930g came with an dual core cpu you cannot upgrade to a quad core. The dual core versions seem to have a slightly different motherboard. If you want pure speed go with an x9100 but beware, I had one in my 8930g and it overheated after gaming for more than 4 hours so I reverted back to a P9700 which is still fast enough to play a game but doesn't overheat.

Ps. Mine has a 9700m gt so perhaps that could be a heat difference compared to your 9600m but I doubt it would differ that much.

both the T9900 and the x9100 run at 3.066Ghz as standard
but if you go for the x9100 you have the unlocked multipliers to play with too

its cheaper than a t9900 as well i think even though a popular auction site can only provide me sellers all the way from china.

Im not an advanced enough user to know about unlocked multipliers but im guessing it squeezes more out the processor exceeding that of the t9900?

Hi, I really hope you guys can give me some advice because I'm in a desperate situation with my 8930G... :(

Around one week ago it started to suddenly power off and then boot back up for no reason. It happens mainly during startup, between the Acer (F2 to BIOS) screen and the drivers being loaded in Windows. If Windows manages to fully start up it is normally OK and then won't crash, but that's very rare. And it normally starts up ok in Safe Mode.

The problem I have always had with my 8930 is that it powers off after approx 10mins of playing games. I figured that was related to my current probs so tried cleaning out all of the laptops fan vents (esp those around the g.card). It didn't help. I then tried uninstalling the Nvidia drivers, this did help for around a day until it was back to it's old tricks.

So far I've also tried flashing to the latest BIOS, cleaning out the fan vents, removing the battery, reseating the 2 RAM sticks, trying to restore the default setup to a fresh hard drive (it crashed during process). The only thing I can think of left to do is apply fresh thermal paste to the g.card/CPU heatsink, but if they were over-heating surely that wouldn't be an issue during startup? I'm guessing my probs are either down to a motherboard fault/bad graphics card... is there anyway of narrowing it down?!

I'd appreciate any help or advice.

if it starts ok in safe mode its more than likely a driver problem

I use t stop already and it seems to stop my comp from choking when im on left 4 dead 2 and other games, has the x9100 got any over heating issues? if it has but its better than the t9900 id just get a laptop cooler as well if necessary.

That's what I thought initially. But it has also powered off when trying to install Windows, on the eRecovery startup screen, and now occasionally in Windows when it's fully booted...

Maybe the issue with my laptop powering off after 10-15mins of gameplay is related... What would you guys recommend as the likely cause/solution for that problem?

well intel say 35watts for the T9900 and 45watts for the x9100
so the t9900 will run cooler but you cant run it faster when you want too
i dont play many games myself, but when i do the x9100 is fine

Now I don't get the option of the F12 Boot Menu when booting up, just F2.

I also just tried to use the 'Restore to Factory Default' DVDs and it powered off from within the eRecovery menu after loading it up from the DVD...

I'm getting really fedup with trying to decide if to get a 8930g or build a small i5 650 setup. :confused2:

All these reports of Thermal throttle stutter and Thermal protection kicking in and turning off the laptop are putting me off.

Got a bit of confusion here, am i right in saying that a resolution of 1920x1080 is high definition?

If so i set the res on burnout paradise to this and my nvidia played it fine albeit with a very slight struggle here and there, i thought only gpu's with the letters hd in thier name could do this, because of the slight struggle it has i play with the res two notches down from top whack and to me it still looks great so to play on something like an asus g73 games must look amazing

    yes 1920x1080 is full HD
but that doesnt mean it will play all games at that
it more to do with watching Blu-rays at full HD

Can all the versions of the 8930G be upgraded to a T9550 2.66ghz CPU or are you limited to certain version of the Board like the Q9000 quad. ?

yeah you can upgrade even higher than the T9550, some have got the quads to run, but some havent, thats why i went for the x9100
    mines running great at 3.60ghz

Apparently there are two versions of the 8930G Motherboard and only one of them will work with the Q9000 quad so i wondered if the same was true with the T9550 as that has HyperThreading.

Running burnout paradise with throttlestop and at full settings with a res of 1360x768 it runs very well with fraps reporting and average of 38 fps i think it was and in certain parts 57 but that wasnt for very long at all, the processor will prob be the final upgrade for me to get as im not concerned over SSD's and the like.

Because it's more versatile i'll be plumping for an X9100 and also a cooler ideally one i can put on my lap, leave on the bed etc... to combat any heat issues especially as right now my comp is getting heat stroke playing games as it is.

No core 2 CPU supports hyperthreading, some parts of it's pipeline are too narrow. This was later addressed to the Core iX series.

    Hey, I'm new on here,
I've had my laptop for a long time now, and it seems that I'm only getting more problems, you guys have helped me out all the time, but now it got worse...

    I got a 8930G with a Q9000 and a 9600M GT w/ a cooling pad (zalman ZM-NC2000, which works really good. I'm also on BIOS 1.20.

Before my laptop only used to throttle, but now if it's loaded it just falls out (like pushing the power button) - Black screen and out. I can't even render any videos for my sister! If I try Orthos it lasts about 1 minute and then it falls out... The temperatures are not even high and it doesn't throttle...

    Can someone help me out?

    Rubz

if its to run XP mode
microsoft have changed things and you dont need it enabled anymore
    taken from FAQ
"Q Is hardware virtualization a must-have to run Windows XP Mode?

A: No. Windows XP Mode can be run on a CPU without hardware virtualization."

what cpu do you have, as not all have VT too enable

Hey all been a while since I posted on here, but that's good news because it means my Acers been running well...until now that is!

It's almost 2 years old now and I'm having some seriously frustrating running issues. Basically its become insanely slow. Games are virtually unplayable and even simple things such as having internet running is excruciating.

Is there anything obvious that might be causing it? I'm wondering if perhaps I need to do a clean install of Vista or something. If I do this firstly would I see a vast improvement and second can I do it keeping all the partitions which are set up as default?

Thanks for any help/advice you can give.

CTRL-ALT-DEL then go to processes, is anything eating all your resources?

If not then download Core temp. Is your processor running at the correct speed? Is it too hot?

If not then download GPU-Z (remember to tell it to monitor when in background under the monitoring tab) is your GPU getting too hot and clocking down during game play?

Thanks for the reply Meaker. Temperature readings from Core Temp are TJ Max = 85 C. Core 0 = 12 C Core 1 = 17 C. Doesn't mean much to me, but maybe you'll know if this is ok?

I think perhaps running processes are the problem. I'm currently running 97 processes. CPU usuage is hovering between 80-100% and physical memory = 53%. NB I am watching a video on firefox and running a virus scan so this is obviously contributing, but 97 processes seems high to me and I have noticed my CPU usage hovers in the upper end when I'm not even doing anything. What processes should run and what can I close?

You can sort programs in the order of CPU and memory use, just click each columns heading, you can see what's eating the most CPU and ram.
Playing a youtube video in the background I get 0-5% usage (95% in idle process).

I found a really good article How to Make Vista Run Faster which has helped me speed things up quite noticably. I also downloaded Starter to help manage services and processes that don't need to be running especially upon startup. My processes have now gone down to 70 which is better. This still seems high, but I've just about turned off everything I'm comfortable with, the rest is beyond my computing knowledge and don't want to do more harm than good. Physical memory is down to 37% and CPU usage is now hovering around 5% with me just using firefox. Thanks for the help and hopefully all is good.
