I'm on the build with a 320GB harddrive. I looked at the second bay but it seems the connector is a little different? I can take a photograph if you want so you can see if we're talking about the same thing (like I said, hardware is not my thing.)

Second subject: Should I flash a new Bios? I'm on v1.05, what are the benefits/risks of upgrading and to what version(s)?

@Shakennstirred: Okay, I'll just assume the other drive I tried to Frankenstein in was just different (long story). That being said, I'll repeat a question.

When I was looking online, I noticed there was an option for Interface, and that listed a few non-SATA things but what I want to know is whether there is a difference between "SATA, SATA 1.5gb/s, SATA 3 gb/s, SATA 6 gb/s" and whether or not that difference affects me, and if I need to go for a specific one or if any of them work?

EDIT: And how would enabling VT help me? Also don't quite get that. What kind of improvements would I be gaining?

EDIT2: Okay, I apologize. For some odd reason I wasn't thinking of adding a second harddrive, I was thinking of replacing the one I've got. Silly me. So probably going to aim for a full-on SSD for my second drive. So, now that I've stopped being a moron, let me post some new questions, because I know you love them:

Any particular manufacturers that are generally "better" or "worse" than others? What all would you recommend putting on a complete SSD? Mostly just my stupidly small library of larger, more drive-demanding video games? (I basically just do music, video games, browsing, a little word processing, a little audio editing, and a little photo stuff.)

Hello! I just made my account here because I am desperate with my laptop.

Here is the problem. A few days ago I started my laptop as usual and in desktop mode, after a few seconds became frozen. I gave it a restart and since then all I have is a small line in the top left corner that blinks twice and disappears and nothing on the screen. It's all black .

I tried all the possible thing I could think of: booting from a cd, removing the memory, another HDD, thousands of key combinations and even with an external monitor...

I noticed that if I press Fn+Esc the small line in the corner blinks and doesn't disappear anymore.

Please help me if you can!!

    Thank You

Jack_Sparrow do you get any post screens, if not it could be the motherboard or gfx card..

chriscatt I think you are right about the gfx card. In the last few days before this the gfx card's temperature was about 60-65 degrees in idle. After 2 hours of gameplay it reached even 110 degrees. You think that maybe it broke down?

If it's the gfx card do you think I can change it?

    Thank you both for answering!

Edit: Meaker I already tried that, no success

Take out the hard drives, see if you can boot from a CD.

When my SSD broke it made everything during bootup go realllllllly slow.

I am glad I joined this board. :p I got the urge to search for what kind of HDD options my 8930g has and I stumbled upon this board. Question: Is there any kind of "dummies" manual that lets me know what options I have? For example, I had no clue that you could upgrade the processor on it. Most of my building experience is desktop related, so you can see where I'd have issues.

Hi, most of the answers are in this thread, I know it is long but there is some good advice. If you think it is the gfx card then it is easily replaced with another however if it turns out to be the motherboard then you could be committing yourself to paying for something that is not needed.

Anyone have problems with their power jack on the 8930g? I got mine in December 2008. After 9 months or so in Oct 2009 the power jack wouldn't turn blue anymore and it wouldn't charge the battery or run off power. So i sent it in to acer and they send it back on the reciept was a bad power board/dc jack repair and it took 3 weeks to get back. Then again about a year later now in november this year, the power jack starts a clicking sound and flickering, eventually going out again! I take it to the store where i bought and they fixed in a week, saying it was the same problem and maybe i was too rough! Luckily i got this laptop as a prize and it had a 3 year store warranty. I only plug and unplug gently the laptop once a day at most and never take it anywhere. I think that either the make the jack cheap or faulty. Also the adapter plug is a l type shape which could strain the power jack sometimes? Anyone else have heard of this or have this problem?

Hello, I own an 8930G, and I'm getting problems with the laptop powering off due to heat problems, only whilst playing games. This only started happening whilst playing Civilization 5, which is quite processor intensive. I thought it was the processor overheating as I tried playing the game on DX9 mode, as well as DX10/11, and after 10 minutes it still powered off.

At the moment the only thing stopping this from happening is to put the laptop on a table, hang it off the edge slightly and put a desk fan underneath. The only problem with this is, it's bloody freezing!!

I need to get a laptop cooler, however the NZXT CRYO-LX is a bit too expensive at £50, plus the £30 shipping from the states. Will any others do the job?

Does anybody else get this problem? I would trawl through 187 pages to find an answer but I don't have that much time!

(I'm still using a T6600 at this time until the overheating problem is fixed, my X9100 is on my shelf)

Edit: I've got some arctic silver ceramiqué thermal paste, which I've read can reduce the heat from 2 - 10 degrees c, which will be applied when installing the X9100. Until then I suppose I could give the innards a thorough dusting...

@ThePantryMaster: Go with the dusting, and make sure you thoroughly get the fan. I don't know about your specific model, but I know on mine there's an issue with one of the screws and thus the fan won't come out, so figure it out. Make sure you don't spin the fan, hold it in place while you dust.

I've read on here peoples GPU's overheat often, how do you stop that? I'm thinking of undervolting but don't know where to start, what the best voltage is for each particular cpu etc

A good cleaning, new paste for GPU + CPU and ThrottleStop should sort you out.

Edit: I picked this up too with DIY fans in mind but never got round to it, it works fine as it is for me :) http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/60150176

Ok so I installed the new processor (first time doing this on a laptop, also first time using this new paste) and f me sideways it's working! Apparently you should leave the computer on for at least 300 hours for the cooling paste to settle, is that right?

I've downloaded throttlestop, not really sure what I'm doing with it though. I'm assuming that overclocking it will increase the temp?

Three hundred hours is an overkill- you won't notice any difference after 100h or even less. As for "leaving" the laptop for that time- you shouldn't leave it off nor on all the time. It should be heating period and then cooling period interleaved(the latter can be much shorter).
Another words- you may do normal work and just switch the notebook at night- just stay away from gaming and video encoding for like four days.

No need to overclock, just set "Clock Modulation" to 100% and "Chipset Clock Mod" to 100% - That should help with the shutting down issue. You should read the ThrottleStop thread for more info and how to set it up so that it auto starts with windows. Our notebooks are known for misreading temps and throttling.

For me, I had a GPU-related crash on Wolfenstein (the new one) and a few other games about a year ago. I dusted out the inside of the beast and completely uninstalled, cleaned, and reinstalled the latest stable drivers. It stopped crashing after that. Which reminds me - what drivers are you using? I'll assume you're on a 9600m GT.

I've got the 9700M GT, latest drivers. Cleaned the innards of my laptop and now I'm getting (according to CPUID HW Monitor) 26 degrees and 32 degrees for Core#0 and Core#1 respectively. GPU is around 42 degrees when not in use.
Just as a side note, when I took the heatsink off the T6600, I noticed that there was WAY too much thermal paste on there, the was lagged with it, really messy stuff.

Edit: Specs for mine are as follows
    8930G, X9100, 4GB DDR3, nVidia 9700M GT, 500GB 5400rpm, 500GB 7200rpm, Windows 7 HP 64bit

I moded the fan and put a fan controller (potentiometer). I noticed the fan turns off and on depending on the temperature. Before that I would be 3d rendering or playing games and the multiplier would drop to 4.5x on CPU-Z. Now it multiplier stays at 9.5/10x and my graphics temps are significantly lower. I was pretty surprised at the full speed of the fan, how loud it can be, and how much hot air it can push out. Also I made a stupid mistake of forgetting to plug the fan back in after running 2 wires outside for the fan controller and the I did get 66C reading on the CPU from CoreTemp before it shut-off, so the temp sensor does work :p Also there was a carpet of dust behind the fan and in my opinion they used way to much thermal compound on the CPU/GPU. So I replaced it with a small amount of Arctic Silver. Everything runs tip-top now :)

My CPU is running at 14 and 22 degrees idle, and my room is pretty warm at the moment, I'm pretty pleased with it, however I think it can run cooler. What's the best voltage for an X9100?

The other thing I was meaning to ask - does anyone else have a problem with the cinedash media console? Mine is very slow to respond, and sometimes it simply doesn't work. It worked fine with Vista 32 bit, but the 64bit windows 7; not so much. It works if there's no battery in the laptop, and it's just running off the mains.
What's with the XP startup if you press the arcade deluxe button when the laptop is off? Where is this stored?

Hi there, I have loved my 8930g since I got it over a year ago. Until last night, I've never had a problem with it. I updated my bios, something I've done on the laptop before as well as numerous computers before hand. The computer restarted as normal so I thought all was well. That is until I tried to boot it up today and although the blue light was showing due to the power cable being plugged in, nothing happened. No fan, no power, etc.. I've been searching the net and trying various fixes, but so far no joy. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's that dreadful Insyde H2O bios.... tried going from 1.10 to 1.13. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, to wrap up what I started a few pages ago, just a few more questions to anyone who can answer.

1: Would I be able to add an Intel X25-M 80GB SATA SSD as my second hard drive without experiencing any problems, or should I watch out for problems? If I need to worry, what SSD should I aim for?
2: Currently on an Intel C2D P8400, what processor should I aim for upgrading to without having to undervolt or add additional cooling? Go for a higher-performing C2D, aim for a Quad-core, or go into the i# series? And if so, which processor?
3: Should I look at upgrading the video card, or is the 9600M GT good enough?
4: Longer down the road, I'm looking to upgrade my main hard drive to a 7200RPM 500GB drive, any recommended manufacturer?

yeah it will work fine, but it would be better as the main drive, so you can use its speed for booting and the operating system
its a bit of a waste as a second drive

    Hi everyone,

    I recently bought an OCZ vertex 2 ssd (7.7/8 on windows'mark :D ) and installed windows 7 64 bits (previously 32 bits).
But I have a problem, Cinedash doesn't control volume like it should be (0->100% on the cinedash, only 10% on windows for example)
Moreover, I can't find the eaudio management for windows 7 64 bits :s

    Does anybody can help me?

    Cheers!

@shaken: I planned on using it mostly to store my stupidly-growing game collection (thank you, Steam holiday sale.) since boot time doesn't really bug me.

@sharks: Download the Win7/64 version of Launch Manager from the Acer site. I don't think they have the Empowering Technology for Win7/64, but you won't miss it (much).

@anyone: Looking at the X25-M, do I need 9.5mm or 7.0mm? Or is that just talking about the size and it doesn't affect me? Aaaaand why do some sites say it's a SATA but Newegg says it's a SATA II.
EDIT - Thanks to an off-site friend, figured out the SATA business.

    Hi all.
I've been looking around this forum a couple of days now, and must say there are some mighty fine people on here.
Here's my problem, though I've seen bits and pieces of it spread throughout here.
I've ordered an 80 gb Intel ssd.
I got my "C" drive down to about 60 gigs, but to create an image, Windows wants to include "D", which puts me up to about 150 gbs.
Can I just put in the new ssd and install Win 7 clean?
Should I take out my "old HDD " before putting in the new one?
When I open the bottom of the case , in the empty drive bay, there is a screw in the middle of it, with a green arrow pointing to it. Why?
Feel free to talk to me like I'm an 8 year old.
    Plain, simple and precise.
    Thank You.

I purchased my Aspire 8930G in late June 2009, just before Windows 7 was released. Its been working fairly well until the last few days.

I have some serious malware on my pc. I've done a clean install and used my recovery discs to install the original factory settings, but I'm still having problems.

I'm pretty sure part of the hidden partitions are infected, either partition 1 - PQservice (15 GB: 3 GB free) or partition 4 (3.5 GB: 2.2 GB free). Both are OEM drives. Any suggestions for how to properly clean malware from these partitions?

I am new here....I have had my 8930g for 2 years now and I love it....but have encountered a problem.....\i had some difficulty last night getting it to come out of sleep...but managed to get it going after shutting it down......restarted fine....decided to turn it off when I went to bed....this morning after pressing the start button and getting the starting windows screen I got the following message:

    "checking file system on c:
    type of file is NTFS
    volume label is ACER
one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency
you may cancel, but it is strongly recommended to continue
    to skip press any key"
then it counts down the seconds and if I press any key nothing happens but a blank screen
if I leave it, it stalls at 1 second.....is my c: drive toast?
I cannot even get to where I can boot it in safe mode after pressing F2, there is no option for that...
I have tried turning it off and starting again and keep getting to this point....
    any thoughts...ideas?
    thanks so much in advance.....

Reset, then wait. Let it to its business. If it seems like it's stuck, it's not. It does actually take a while for a 500 gig hard drive to be checked. Mine usually hangs at 57% for about 10 minutes. Sometime it takes about 10 minutes for it to even start.
This hasn't got anything to do with the physical condition of the disk, it's just checking the data isn't corrupted. If you're still getting nowhere, run the windows/acer recovery disk that comes with the lappy.

Also another thing that sometimes helps, go into your BIOS and check your time and date are set correctly. This usually helps inconsistencies in EXT2, EXT3 and EXT4 file systems (used in various linux distro's). Not sure about NTFS as I've not done much with it, but it's worth a shot.

Following applies to Windows 7 (Not sure about Vista):

I've had this problem before; you will have to keep restarting until it boots - It may take a few tries. After it boots, apply the following fix from Microsoft:

The Chkdsk.exe program does not start correctly on a Windows 7-based computer

Something to do with the IR sensor.

thanks so much for your replies.....I ran my recovery disk and I am still having difficulty.....I will try the above suggested fix......I have windows 7

I have the lappy set in safe mode with networking as it is not responding/hanging when started in regular mode..in the safe mode it responds normally....any suggestions other than the recovery disk and the chkdsk.exe ?

Hey guys, does anybody else's GPU run at around 50 degrees idle? I'm sure that's too hot...

Is there any way to prevent the GPU overheating? I've already got a notebook cooler, and it's still getting to around 85 degrees whilst gaming

Edit: It's a 9700M GT, and my CPU (X9100) never goes above 40 degrees.

@Pantry: I actually just noticed this yesterday myself! 9600M GT/P8400. The CPU holds steady at 39/37 (core1/2) , and the GPU idles at 48-53, but will ramp up to 70-80+ during gaming. I'm not one who knows temperature levels though, so hopefully someone here knows.

jgarciac, I'm not sure what your problem is. The link works just fine for me.
