i am lost here also. it doesnot make any sence. i cleaned the fan several times already (dusty city here) with no problems idem for cpu.
went 2 driver back with the nvidia card with no luck.
ALSO starting with the dc connector is IMPOSSIBLE, only on battery i can start with no problems. for me that means there is no driver problem, at least i hope.
tried another dc connector as well with same problem. :(

Best thing to is to take it to another reparaire shop, or to send it to acer company in your country!!! If they found out the problem pls send my a mail to "c/o/r/n/e/l/i/u_a/d/r/i/a/[email protected]" (remove "/" from in-between the letters)

    Hi again guys.

Went for the X9100. Stonking upgrade on my T6400.

Need to check GPU compatability for my motherboard.

SIW gives PSMBOU-1234567, but somehow that seems a bit generic.

Seem to have a problem with a second hand 9600M GT card i bought.

Basically it died about 4hrs after i put it in, even though I was watching the temps on SIW and CPUID to make sure I'd got the thermal contact correct. Was really careful during installation. Now a proud owner of a fleabay toasted card! It just failed after working fine for a short time. Old 9600M GS works fine. GT now audibly clicks, is shorting out [ blue DC LED's don't light up & chassis gives you a shock!].

I am so sure I didn't cook it. Was so careful, & I am a practical person & then was watching temps like a hawk for the 4/5hrs it was in, & suddenly it catasrophically failed.

Any advice on where I stand?

& does anyone know any UK repair people?

& what MXM cards are 8930g 100% compatable?

    ok friends

had some bad nights but i am ok now. it was indeed a driver problem. as i am getting a bit old and had some stressfull days )installing new kitchen).
i sent everybody outside so i could work on this problem without being bordered all the time. i remembered that i tried to connect an iphone to the lt with bluetooth without succes. read that i needed to install some drivers for this and started installing. as i had other business to take care off (controling stupid installers) i totally forgot what i was doing  .
now i will go easy (again making backup).

THANKS TO ALL for this wonderfull site
have a nice Christmas and a happy newyear
    Paul :) :D

    Hi
My laptop has started playing up ....after i shut it down ...all lights go out on cinedash etc ...after about 4 seconds it boots back up again on its own .
I have tried it without a battery in it and still the same .
If i unplug power cable and then plug it back in , the laptop does not reboot ...only does it once you have been into operating system .
Have it dual booting but still does the same on whatever operating system i used .
    Any help most appreciated
p.s i did notice that the time had reset to 01/01/2001 ....but reset it and check in bios and is set correct
    ----------------------------
just an update ...tried it both both hard drives removed ....still does it .
if you unplug power ...then plug back in then it wont reboot itself ....but soon as you power up the sytem then only way to stop it rebooting is to unplug ..so guess nowt to do with operating system as no hard drives installed and still does it .
any ideas ? is there a bios battery on these ?

    another update :)
tried removing cinedash ribbon from under keyboard as if you press a certain button on it ...it will boot up .....that made no difference .
I then tried removing power button ribbon ....still the same .
What can cause this ? would bois battery cause this or not ?

Also just tried shutting lid while in operation system ...laptop should hibernate ....which it does ...shuts down ...but after 4 seconds it boots up with lid shut ...when i lift lid the pc has rebooted and says windows shutdown thingy and would i like to start in safe mode ....start normally etc

Well was a proud owner of a 8930g, but lately not so much. After almost 2 years of owning it, now it has developed some problems. It originally came with the crappy T5800 2.0 cpu. Well I upgraded it to the T9600 2.8 cpu. So far the system seemed fine for a couple months, but now it just keeps shutting off.
I recently had to replace the AC adapter because of the wire starting to get loose near the power pack. I also tried to get a 5200mAh battery, but for some strange reason the laptop would not charge it. So I returned it and got another one. Well lord be hold, does the same thing! The original 4800mAh battery charges and works, but won't hold a charge.
After I put the 2nd new battery in, the laptop did some weird things. The power light pulsed and I herd a weird noise. Now I know this could be a power issue, or maybe video card, but the system still powered on and worked. Most of the threads I have read, said that their systems never powered on, well mine did.
So I put in the original battery, did the same thing. I took the laptop apart and cleaned everything. Well now it works fine, except the random shut off issue. The new battery still won't take a charge, but the old one will. So now I am in this weird situation!
I can leave the laptop on for several hours just it sitting there. I left it on for like 16 hours one time and never shut down. Came home to try World of Warcraft on it, and within 5 minutes of being in game, it shut off. Now mind you this was after the 16 hour of just sitting there. So what could be the problem?
I have read the AC adapter not giving enough power, or the video card is overheating, or maybe the cpu. The video card hit 100 something degrees Celsius before shutdown. Plus the cpu temp don't even read right any more. I can't get any software to monitor it right any more. I don't want to start replacing parts to come and find out I just wasted money fixing this thing. I mean it could be the motherboard, video card, cpu, ac adapter, battery or its just a pile of crap now! What should I do?

right ...here i am again with another update to the rebooting laptop .
when i power down and the screen goes blank ...the power button and cinedash stay lit for a second or 2 after the screen goes blank ....if i hold the power button for about 6 seconds the laptop does not reboot ....also i have noticed a delay when pressing the power button ...the laptop does nothing for about 2 seconds then come on ...but only when i do this shutdown method ....

another update to the rebooting issue
    -
last few days i have been shutting down by holding power button for 6 seconds after machine has shut down ....stops it rebooting .
well 2 days back system was completely flat so put in power cable and machine booted up but clock was wrong again ...01/01/2001 ( or 2000 ,cannot remember )
Set clock and has been ok until today when i switched on and checked bios to find it had reset once again .
I have managed to find the cmos battery and have disconnected it ....laptop now shuts down completely when i tell it to shut down ...have to set time everytime i boot it though .
Have refitted battery for time being ....have ordered a new cmos battery ...got to be worth a try ??
Anyone got anymore info on this problem ?

yep sounds like a flat battery
once you get a battery go though all the setting in the bios
its not just about keeping the clocks time right there are other stuff you will need to setup again
like the power setting, its probably those going back to default that has it rebooting on shutdown

Well last night i made a makeshift cmos battery out of an 3v battery out of an old keyfob ..same type as in the laptop but without the shrink wrap and wire .
Cut wire off old battery and found bit of wire ...duck tapped wires to battery and connected to wiring plug ...refitted and now works a treat ....got battery stuck under the access panel underneath until a new one arrives then will refit it properly .
Ordered a few bits off ebay too so can fit them at same time ...touch pad bezzel ...( mine worn bad ) ...power switch bezzel and lcd power lights on the hinge .
Be like a new one when finished lol !!

    Update on quote below

Currently my laptop screen does not work at all, it just keeps showing the coloured screens. External monitor does however work, and when I connect it, the coloured screen procedure seems to be a little more randomized. (time intervals between different colours is random).

When I opened the laptop no wires or cables seemed loose at first sight, but my guess is that some cable could be broken at the hinge.

Anyone has a clue what this could be?

Try wriggling the screen cable a bit, then closing/opening the screen a few times.

I think the cable gets a problematic connection due to it passing through the hinge and from the closing/opening of the screen itself.

If that doesn't solve the issue, then try opening your laptop and see if the cable connections are properly seated.

Does anyone have any experience or advice for confusing temp sensor readings?

Using CPUID & SIW. No reported problems with ACPI thermal zones in device manager.

TZVR & TZVL report 0 degree C, & CPU temp never varies from that at startup. Restart & CPU temp variations are logged.

Not at all sure what's going on since I installed new GPU [9600M GT DDR3] & CPU [X9100], & hesitant to stress test since healthily paranoid about temps.

    Any ideas guys?

    PS Happy New Year.

    Hm...
It might be that the thermal sensors might be malfunctioning... or the software you are using cannot read your new CPU.

Might I suggest you try HWMonitor, or RealTemp?
Though HWMonitor seems to be a part of CPUID... so you might be using that already.

Not sure... like I said, definitely try both HWMonitor and RealTemp.
If both show same results, open up the laptop and check if you seated the CPU properly (though I have to say that if the OS loads and works, then it shouldn't be an issue).

Depending on where you got the CPU, you might want to check with the seller if he/she sold you an item with a proper thermal sensor.

You might also try to google this issues, because it might be integral to other units - though I cannot be sure.

    Thanks Deks.

Yes CPUID is HWMonitor. Kosher X9100 from Laptop Monkey. Just trying to figure out why CPU temps won't update, but still register when reboot & still hot. Realtemp's a bit more involved, so haven't got to grips with it yet but it seems to report varying temps.

At a complete loss as to why TZVR & TZVL [related more to GPU I think?] are stuck at 0. Presumably a proper problem. I suppose I'll have to reinstall GPU to make sure it's not a contact issue, but hesitant till i know where the sensors physically are. And they don't seem to impact on the fan activation.

The X9100 is not an ES it's a QS. I did double check it's qualities before I bought it & the reply was " this CPU functions identical to OEM SLB48, no different in performance, temperature OC etc ".

My Card is 9600m gt 512 ddr3, My old one was 9600m gt DDR 1024.

DONT TRY THAT AT 1024 Version 9600m gt Because it has Memories under the card to and its no way to cool them.

9600m GT ddr3 Is at theses Photos . Only 4 modules up the card.
9700m GT ddr3 Is More Easy to do that because its Bigger and the Memory Modules are not so close to GPU . So its very easy to the Lucky owners of 9700m GT.

Issue: used WiFi radio on/off button on RHS to see if it resolved a software issue and now the WiFi radio won't turn back on. The Intel management software won't recognise the card even though Windows Device Manager does. I've reseated the card in the other slot, again it's recognised by the system but the radio is still turned off. When I press the button to turn it on it flashes once every 10 seconds or so.

Is there any solution to this that's guaranteed to work? I'm not sure what method that button the RHS uses but it's managed to defeat Intel management software and Linux. I don't want to have to rip the laptop apart and pull the BIOS battery out to resolve this.

It's not the software that's the issue as I have a dual boot and the problem is the same with both OS'. Trying to turn the radio back on with software in Linux doesn't work.

I'll get the unlocked bios and upload it later and see if there's an option to fix this but everything I've tried so far does not work.

Also, I've bought a (2nd) new battery for it recently. The laptop won't recognise it. The battery is an Anker battery. Anyone have any experience with these? Google turns up nothing. Obviously the battery is listed as compatible and if it works with some laptops it should work with all. The old battery, though it discharges in just a few minutes, still works in so far as the system recognises it and charges it.

I love or did love this laptop but it has given me a lot trouble since I bought it. I will never buy Acer and I'd be very reluctant to buy an expensive laptop again (yes, I should have bought the 3 year warranty but my budget and my previous good experience with Acer prevented this, also, I'm not certain Acer would have honoured it as with issue 1 below they said it was "usually" user damage that caused it). Very bad experience overall. It will be netbooks and easily repairable PCs from here on.

1 - power input stopped working after a month, was without the laptop for a few weeks as they repaired rather than replaced it.

2 - 3/4 months after warranty expired the "clicking" issue started and it didn't take long before the battery was destroyed and the battery the laptop didn't turn on. After an expensive repair and battery replacement the charger didn't work either. It had to be replaced.

3 - machine crashes if you play games. Probably a heat problem with the GPU. The card is expensive to replace so I haven't bothered, with normal day to day stuff it doesn't crash so I'll carry on.

4 - I've had the power issue repaired twice, the 2nd new battery I've bought will not charge.

    Hello everyone,

Another Acer 8930 owner to join the mass here.
I was looking around for upgrades to my laptop (to improve the gaming), and ended up here along a few other sites with some info.
Here it seems to be most complete for information so decided to register here.

My Acer is more or less as it came out of the box.
I replaced the HDD's twice already and the screen has also been replaced once (due to a mobile phone being launched trough the screen, don't ask ^^)

    Intel Core 2 Duo T9400
    4 GB DDR3
    GeForce 9700M GT 512 MB
    2 x 500 GB HDD 7200 RPM (replaced the 2 x 320 GB ones)
    Blu-Ray Disc Drive
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit

I was looking for upgrade possibilities that yield the most for gaming.

I'm gonna read properly trough the last pages here to see what's the biggest things that can go in.

    • As far as I skimmed the pages so far my graphics card is about the best to put in there (9700M GT 512 MB DDR3), no real gains to be gotten here.
    • CPU wise I saw the x9100 could go in place of the T9400, although the performance increase is marginal I think because this CPU already runs on 1066 Mhz FSB. You gain about 1 Ghz processor power over both cores, Is it worth the upgrade?
    • After reading it seems 6GB is the max supported amount of RAM. Now I only wonder how this is placed. Is it 4GB - 2 GB or are there 3GB modules too? And where does the limitation come from? BIOS, MB itself?
    • And as the poster above me I'm also in the search for that modified BIOS version which has no valid download link anymore (on the other site). I've done some searching on google with no results except for that single not working link. So I would really appreciate the repost of that BIOS.
    • Last consideration is if it's a sense to upgrade Windows to version 7 (and whether or not 32 or 64 bit). I'm not in the market for a dual boot tbh because I consider that a space waste (believe me, the 1 TB storage is even too small for me sometimes, haha).

I use my laptop for private use only, however it's used in it's mobile capacity. I'm a international truckdriver on a foodtanker, and I use my laptop on the way for contact with my family, email, watching TV and movies and playing games like World of Warcraft.

Further I'm curious as on which drivers everyone is running (didn't find any real info on that here in the topic).
I've noticed with the 2 latest legacy drivers of Realtek (HD Audio) that the microphone fails to work. I've returned to the original Acer driver for the sake of it (and the mic works again)
The latest Verde drivers of NVIDIA seems to do ok, no problem there.

Thanks for any pointers, tips and other useful information.
    Regards, Liquid.

Funny thing only that it detects as DIMM1 and DIMM3 and not DIMM2 :S
Oh well, I've learned in the past that with Acer everything's possible :D
Where does the memory limitation come from? BIOS or MoBo itself?

Also I noticed that the graphics card is detected as a PCI-E 16x card. Is MXM III regarded as such a device?

I've been digging trough the internet for that 1.20 BIOS, but I had no luck.
All I've found is a 1.10 and 1.14 unlocked and a 1.21 with SLIC and VT (No Unlocks though). I've not tested them, but decided to post them here.

I'm still after the 1.20 BIOS with everything unlocked so if that one ever is reposted somewhere (where requested) I'm interested in that one too.

Here are the links for these 3 mentioned BIOS versions (these links will bring you to a page with multiple download locations):

the unlocked 1.20 bios doesn't really unlock anything of real use in terms of overclocking or memory management from what i have seen

I've flashed the 1.21 version myself today (which I linked to here) and it indeed has native support for VM enabled.
    The BIOS is dated 03-03-2011.

Further I've done some more research on the memory part (upgrade).
If your laptop (in AIDA, Everest or whichever program you use) has a 8930G MoBo you CAN upgrade to 8GB of RAM (it's just a matter of BIOS then).
However if you have a 8930 MoBo, then the limit is 4 or if you're lucky 6GB of RAM.

More when I find some ;)

Not looking very hard are ya boys?! First post, just registered to share cus I'm just that way inclined.
Take note though; while looking for this I stumbled on many a conversation (many in German) about how buggy this BIOS is. Apparently one bug is that the battery depletes itself in power off state

Still to trawl through this thread, is 1.20 supposed to unlock SSD or Q9000 or what?

    Cheers!

P.S. I own the 8930 without the g. I sure wish I had the g... 8GB RAM... Quad-core... *sigh*. Oh well! I did pick her up for a snap at £175.

1.20 doesnt unlock anything, it was mainly big fixes
and most of those drivers listed in the link you posted are out of date

    Gotchya!

Can anyone here tell me which upgrades are possible with the 8930 mobo (not 'g')?

I hear the RAM limit can be as low as 4GB but the chipset is still the same (PM45). Provided the right BIOS is used, could 8GB DDR3 and a Q9000 (or higher?) be installed? If not, which Core 2's are known to work with this mobo?

    Thank you!

i don't believe a bios update will get 8gb working
8930 has been out ages now and i havent seen any bios that even claim to get 8gb working
on mine 6 gb works fine but it wont even boot to the bios with 8gb

I've seen quite a few different cases where people have got their 8930g's running 8GB and q9000's. The 8930 and 8930g use the same PM45 chipset so what is it that stops a lot of 8930 owners taking advantage of such an upgrade? Could really boost the longevity of our machines.

    Hi all,

I have an 8930G and was wondering what the spare slot was for near the RAM chips and next to the WLAN, (I think it's the WLAN).

    Thanks in advance.

Also, I've upgraded my processor from a T6400 to a T9400 and it's much better IMO and was wondering whether a GPU upgrade was possible. Mine has a Nvidia 9600M GT 1024Mb RAM.

    Again, thanks in advance.

    Hi,

The spare slot next to the wifi card is for the optional TV tuner card.

Also it is possible to swap out the 9600m for another card, most probably a 9700m - infact ive just swapped my 9600m GT 1gb DDR2 card for a 9700m GT DDR3 card. Install was a piece of cake however youll need to source the relevant cooler as the 9600m one wont fit the 9700. I bought the card for £59 off ebay and the cooler for €27.

    Hope this helps,

    Dave.

Thanks Dave for the quick reply. £59, wow, the cheapest I've seen is £110+. Didn't know about the cooler issue, thought the 9700 was the same size etc as the 9600. What did you type in to find the cooler.

Also, have you noticed any real significant improvement over the 9600, ie DD2 /DDR3. Also most 9700 seem to be 512mb, is that still good compared to 9600 1Gb.

    Thanks again.

    Hi,

    The guy still has a few more, ebay item # 170743863072 :). Im not that clued up on these things but the 9600m is a mxm2.1 and the 9700m is a mxm3 type card. Physically the 9600 cooler wont fit. I did a bit of searching around and found a company in Germany that had them in stock;

    Acer HEATSINK.VGA.MXM3 (60.AP70N.001)

Not too sure what the current stock level is like but you will get a few hits with 60.AP70N.001 (cooler part #)

I have noticed a difference with the 9700, as a really rough indicator wei has increased and in real world performance skyrim runs better.

Again, not too good with facts and figures but the DDR3 of the 9700 is much better than the DDR2 of the 9600 - thats where the majority of the increase in performance comes from.

    Hope this helps,

    Dave.

    Thanks again Dave.

I did see them on eBay, but not been too clued up, I thought they were just a card and assumed the gfx chip was a separate buy. May have to re-think now.

Was it easy to swap out.

    Thanks again.

    Hi,

Yes mate, very easy to swap out.

    Remove bottom cover
unscrew 3 screws from fan unit, unplug it and remove
unscrew the 2 screws holding the heatsink clamp in position, then remove
carefully remove the heatsink/heatpipe from the gpu
remove 2 screw holding gpu in position and remove

Refiting is the same as above in reverse, just make sure you reapply thermal paste to gpu core. Job done.

    Best regards,

    Dave.

yeah have seen a few getting the Q9000`s running but not 8gb
seen a few say they have 8gb running on other forums but dont show prove
    you got any links??

yeah you can fit a tv card in it(there are other thing you can put in it also) but you would also need to fit the ariel and socket which means cutting a hole as its filled in if the your 8930 did have it fitted when new

    Hi,

    If you mean the same bits for the 9700m upgrade then your luck may be in (if you do ebay). Theres both the 9700m and the mxm3 cooler listed on ebay UK. Item numbers;

    350530499452

    and

    170743863072

As is always the case with me, its cheaper than i paid :D

    Regards,

    Dave.
