hi, I have this heatsink, and the gpu I have the same, I wonder if we can upgrade to a 9700m gts or a 9800m gts or gtx , nut our 9700m gt has MXM 2
not MXM 3 because it have a large last pin on the right, but... I think that my x9100 will be enought for me and some years later =)

You CANT Upgrade to 9700m gts or 9800m GTS the only faster cards that works are the HP Quadro FX 3700M and the Acer Ati 4670 mxm 2 but you have to search for ddr3 version because the 4670 DDR 2 version its much slower

The above cards work at 8930g all the others you say dont, the guys at mxm-upgrade have not know evrything and they didnt test evrything. on 8930g.

Ps. they are many cards that work with 8930g but they arent faster enough from 9700m gt

    =D true story !

but the ati (I hate ati) but yes, it has 320 stream processors  vs our 9700m gt with 32 stream processors both are in MXM-2

if our acer aspire 8930g has a like this connector pci-e :

so we can upgrade what we want, the only problem, that I've never go to see what we have on our board, do you have an idea ?

ATI streams are different from nVidia streams so you shouldn't compare them directly
nVidia GT540 with 96 streams is more or less equal to ATI HD5730 with 400 streams.

Yes it's 3rd of June in case of nVidia although it may have been paper-launch in case of ATI. They do that quite often.

Agony is right BTW- 4670 is faster.

there are some sites that people claim they have 8gb running but not seen any real prove myself
mine wont even go to the bios screen with 8gb, but runs great on 6gb

I'm in the process of locating a PC shop in the neighbourhood that has 8GB (2x4GB) lying around so I can test it in my laptop on the spot (unfortunately there are 1) not many shops around and 2) if any they don't have modules greater than 2GB so far).

Highly unlikely it will do since I have a 8930 MoBo (not the G version).
Currently it's a bit hectic in real life with long working days and short breaks.
I hope to be able to get back to normal days in about 4 weeks.

If I do get a chance to test this beforehand, I will ofcourse post results here, but most likely I end up with 6GB like Shakennstirred.

At long last I have saved enough pennies to buy an X9100 CPU to fit in my 8390.

    Already have 6Gb RAM Fitted.

I'm going to be using Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal Compound as reviews show this can give a few degrees improved cooling over Arctic Silver 5 that I have used in the past.

    I'm currently running Bios 1.20.

I would like to be able to undervolt the New CPU to cool off the extra heat it may produce over what my old T5800 put out. According to COU-Z my Core Voltage is currently 1.25V on the T5800.

So what's the best way of undervolting? Software like RMclock or is there a Bios method of undervolting?

i use a program called throttlestop (get it from this thread)
to undervolt and overclock my X9100
i found IC Diamond thermal compound to be better than MX-4

guys, my nvidia 9700m gt is currently at 56°C I cleaned with ArctiClean 1 & 2 and I put on it MX-4 the only problem that I have seen that one screw don't work perfect, it is not completely entered ... but I am sure it is not about that it's the 65 nm gpu

what temperature in degrees celcius got your 8930g ? 9700m gt

Could you please upload your modified BIOS v1.20 that you mentioned on a previous post?
    I mean the file: Acer_Aspire_8930_v1.20_SLIC21_ADV_menu_EIST.zip
I've searched the web but no luck.

    Thanks ShakenStirred,

Went ahead with the surgery this morning...

Replaced my old T5800 Centrino 2 (2.0GHz, 800MHz FSB) with the X9100 Core 2 Duo Extreme (3.06GHz, 1066MHz FSB) and with the extra 2Gb of DDR3 memory (to 6Gb) I added a few weeks back and updating to Win7x64 it is a much quicker machine now. Nice to finally be using the memory at its top FSB speed.

That's the fastest CPU and most memory I can fit to my 8930 Motherboard so poor old Lappy is at it's standard fit limit now.

I did use Arctic Cooling MX-4 Thermal Compound for the heat-sinks, and even though the new chip runs at 44W compared to the old one at 36W It is running 10°C cooler (31°C instead of 41°C) when idling and a massive 20°C cooler when running Star Wars The Old Republic (56°C instead of 76°C). That's without undervolting. Currently pulling 1.2675V.

Of course I took the opportunity to clean out the dust and lint too, but with the figures I am getting I suspect there were issues with the thermal compound fitted on the original CPU.

Temp Figures from RMClock and SpeedFan (they match).

Tempted now to see how far I can push the CPU clock with a bit of undervolting to control the temperature....hmmmm......but first i'm going to replace the thermal compound on the GPU.

UPDATE: Undervolted to 1.1125VID at 11x multiplier stepping in 0.0125V increments down to 1.050VID at 6x Multiplier. should add 25mins or so to battery lie :)

hi, not sure if i'm in the right place to post a new thread but here goes.
I have an acer aspire 8930G and for some reason I have lost sound. One night I was watching a dvd and then next night there was no sound. Icon in bottom right has a red cross and no sound card showing in device manager. I have tried downloading latest drivers but no good. Everything else works fine (although I have a noisy fan). Can anyone help me please as I love watching dvd's? :(

very happy with my acer aspire 8930g got it december 8th 2008 after working 7 days a week. must say its fantastic out of all the laptops i have owned this one has lasted the longest and not had single problem and i am on it every day gaming, net and also film watching.i have the highest spec model that came out that time t9400 2.53ghz dual core 512mb 9700m gt. and i just love to game on it. i have a xbox 360 but i would rather game on my 8930g. laptop looks as new as when first bought except tiny wear on touch pad area from using finger to move cursor. i finding giving this laptop long live is i blow into the speakers holding laptop up lol sounds funny but i do this each sunday and use fibre optic cloth on screen, and keys. laptop was 1,289 from pc business in birmingham england where i live. its funny how i did have a alienware laptop 9700 before in 2005 december was 1,500 before clicking drop down menus. after i clicked all the menus to increase spec laptop came up to 3,000 lol. i payed this in installments when i was working. anyone else enjoying there acer aspire 8930g, i do like the 8951g model for the gtx 555m if anyone wants to comment on there laptop i from birmingham england [email protected]

Hello, once again the Laptop ,is in my hands, the condition is just PERFECT.

I searched around the net and the chipset that we have PM 45, can take up to 8 GB Of ram 1066 Mhz DDR 3.

I have 2 module of 2 GB each , so i will buy a new set with different GB.

    And one other think ...

What SSD is better , to have inside ?

Intel is the best . The bigest improve is a good ssd but you have to spend 400 euro to have a good one.

I dont think you need to buy more DDR ram you will see no diference . I have 2 SSD INTEL postviles on my 8930g and my memmory never goes up to 35% so for me look for a good SSD . or FX3700 gpu if you play games

Petro , i suggest NOT to add more Memory. Its NO diference if you have 4 giga or 8 giga ram .I have monitor with tools laptops with such a ram and they dont use it at Windows or any aplication.
The only way that you will need more ram is a GAME like Battlefield but waste of time because 8930g GPU cant handle it. So DONT buy more Memory waste of money trust me .
Ps.The only diference is IF there was a way from the BIOS to get Higher clocks for the DDR but We cant OC the DDR so ..... NO extra ram.

ALso to your second question If you use a lot of the operating system programs videos and NO gaming then you should BUY SSD DISK GREAT improvement.
CPU.... You can only update to Core 2 Duo the Xtreme is very good But dont BUY QUAD core Because Quad Cores work Only to 8930g motherboards that already had Quad Cores. Like mine. But No problem Because the Xtreme is much quicker to everyday use Quad Core is much quicker only to Multi thread programs like video edit , Its for profesional use Not games .

Last the GPU.... 9600m gt and 9700m gt is the same cards just an oced one some machines had the 9600m gt 1giga ram ddr2 that is much slower.

Its very easy to change your GPU but because the MMX type of the card the only Card that you will see a improve it the FX3700m . you can buy ati 4670 to but there is not so much improve so i sugest if you buy GPU BUY the FX3700m it works nice.

Hou to change GPU ??? Its easy you open the laptop you unscrew the GPU and take it off , You clean it add some artic silver and that is all.

But you have to know if you have the 9700m heatsink all works nice. if you have the 9600m heatsink you have to cut it and buy zalman heatsinks like i do. when i change my GPU. i have photos to my previus posts how to.....

    I hope i helped

Hello again, i just can't believe it :) It's just a great laptop.

I do some video editing and so on. so i will need a little bit more of RAM in the future.

I have uploaded the specification of my laptop in the CPU-Z and now in the forum.

So you should see them clear.
My CPU is , P8600 , which is a good buy now to buy from ebay better than my CPU ?

And also about the GPU , i have the Nvidia 9700GT. What could i put into this spot ?

    And the SSD type,its easy a friend of mine is giving a Agility 3,for 50 € :)
