Petros i think you dont want to listen what i know from my xp, so do your self and buy extra ram your money to waste. you will see no diference in video edit , the only way to have big diference in video edit is to have Q9000 AND YOUR LAPTOP DONT WORK WITH Q9000 , ACER IN GREECE THEY DONT KNOW ANYTHING about their laptop trust the guys in this site they know much more.
Call Acer and ask them to tell you about the heat problem or the 1.20 battery kill bios or the chipset they dont know . They just BUY parts and asemply together .
If you want to know about chipset or prossecor ask INTEL .

You can use T9900 the Q9100 doesnt work even to my Motherboard that already has Q9000 tested and NO WORKING i dont care what Acer tells i have tested and not working . But if you have money to spend buy it so you can see it for yourself.

By the way a 500 euros NEW Laptop with i3 in Greece Petros its faster than p8600 you can test it your self.

 

just recently go a 8930g, it was the 9600m gt 1gb version.
gave it a cheap p8600 cpu for a quick upgrade from the t5800 due to 800mhz fsb.

next up is a quadro fx 3700m from dell. but as you mentions will be quite a fit due to the cpu cooler i have. what do you think if i use enough well positioned vga coolers from zalmann it will disperse the heat enough.saw some copper ones also on amazon that are smaller.

Found out that this laptop is picky about ram CAS also.
tried replacing the ram with 5-5-5-15 speeds from 7-7-7-20 and it kept freezing.

That and i keep having speaker issues having to have sub-centre on swap for it to work mostly due to compatibility problems.

Agony what is this 1.20 bios issue? reading threads as we speak trying to find it.

If your available can you dump your bios and up it. hoping its slic 2.1 and VT patched.

agony what country you from, and you seeing any diff in games with the quad instead of dual core 2.53ghz and also is there anyway the 8930g can get a higher vid card than 512mb 9700gt. its still good card for playing all the games out there i just been trying on it just now binary domain demo runs great. finding alot of games were best at 1366x768 batman arkham city was same and ran good. been trying to get a job for this year but nowt out there wanna start saving for things and anything good acer brings out laptop wise

 

the quadro fx 3700m is best upgrade its equivalent to gtx 280m

I will try to give anwers to all of you. I am from Greece.

Squee666: 8930g arives with 3 models gpu 9600m gt DDR2 1 giga 9600m gt 512 DDR3 and 9700m GT 512 DDR3 all the gpus are the same BUT the 1 giga version its DDR2 thats why is 2x times slower than DDR3
So ........ 9700m DDR3 9600m DDR3 its the same card BUT Overclocked.
the problem is HEAT the 9600m gt has for example 30fps in Grand Theft Auto for 4 hours 9700m gt has 35 fps for 1 hour and then AUTO downclock because of the HEAT 95C and more makes the card to DOWNclock .

Next UP GPU Upgrade you can use a lot of MXM cards but you will see no big diference the only one good is the FX3700 M its very easy to USE i HAVE A GUIDE AND PHOTOS HOW TO , i USE ZALAMAN Heat SInks to. i Attach photos.

About the Memory CAS time its not the problem your laptop must crash Because it has limit in MB per chipset in memory .SO if it SINGLE SIDED memory 2-4 giga WILL NOT WORK it mus be DOUBLE SIDED to work.

Next The sub doesnt work because of software problem mostly try to check the drivers of realtek and see the properties.

Next BIOS : 1.20 bios is the only Bios that keep drain battery power even if the laptop is close , a litle power but its there. IS THAT GOOD OR BAD ?
Its bad for us because we open the laptop after 3 days of no use and says 70% remaining BUT its GOOD for the Battery . THIS KIND OF type that ACER use for Battery WANTS 2 things to last a long time FIRST COOL COLD they DONT want HEAT , and Second Sleep they dont last long if the battery sleeps so to fix that problem They dont let her sleep with Bios 1.20 .

Next CPU upgrade : My opinion is tha X9100 is much better overall because of the clock. Yes its not so Strong at Multithread but its very faster at all the others. So X9100 and you know that it works for SURE . Q9000 it work only on a specific mobo. So...... X9100 is a good buy.

The Q9000 core its faster in LOW resolotion games i will explain what i mean to run a game you need cpu power and gpu power ok? nice so think that the cpu works all the olgarithms the position of the tree the car and all the objects. The GPU runs the textures the resolution and all the others .
So will my game runs better with Quad Core ? YES and NO if the maker of the game has use an engine that is more CPU depended YES you will see,
If the engine of the game use High textures doesnt have many objects in the screen NO you will not see diference. ITS ALL UP THE GAME ENGINE.

I will give an example Crysis 2 QuadCore 9600m gt 1280x720 45 fps
P8600 9700mgt 1280x720 32fps
Quad core 9600m gt 1920x1080 17 fps
P8600 9700m gt 1920x1080 22 fps
as you can see Low res CPU demand
High res GPU demand
CRYSIS 2 IS using 4 Cores .

Next and Last No the QUAD Core CANT be OCED because it is LOCKED hardware LOCKED

BUT the x9100 it is NOT locked you can OverClock X9100 but first you have to use UNLOCKED BIOS and if you dont you Can USE a program inisde the WIndows But for ME PPL never Works .

The truth is that Quad Core Q9000 runs at 2.000mhz with very low heat you can easy go to 3.000 mhz the problem as i said is that is LOCKED from INTEL NO WAY to OC

What I'm most likely going to do us get a 3700m and underclock it slightly. With a 9600m heatsink and VGA cookers for the time being. Then have an undervolted x9100.

And yea speakers have issues what drivers you on. I have tried a mixture of 8940g and sub/centre switch. I found that my front speakers and centre are low volume but side and sub are loud. But if I switch centre is loud.

Using mx-4 thermal on CPU and gpu ATM runs quite cool.

Strange thing is memory was dual sided.
Goodbye ddr2 gpu.
Also really need correct driveslrs and orintscreens of your settings for audio I can hear on Skype.

I know all about your VGA heatsinks I trawled this thread for a week prior to getting laptoo

ABout your memory i dont know why they dont work 8930g doesnt have any cas time limit . And you say that they are double sided so i dont know what is the problem.

there is a big diference DDR2 VS DDR 3 in Nvidia gpus

so what revision of the realtek drivers are you using im still trying to get mine working properly.

like i said can only get side adn sub to work loudly the rest are low unless i switch sub/centre


edit turns out my front speakers are blown in this laptop. getting replacements from ebay.
so in total for speaker and gpu costing me around £160
luckily my friend bought my old samsung np-x460 for£200 with its p8400 nad 9200m gs ddr3 ;p

 

to overclock the X9100 use a program off here
called throttlestop, its works great and you dont need an unlocked bios
i have an unlocked bios and there isnt anything to overclock a cpu in it from what i can see

I have overclocked the ddr3 9600gt at 600Mhz core and 920Mhz memory clock with evga precision software and with the p8600 runs quite good! Time for an T9900!

 

Found another Acer 8930 going about for £150+ with the 9700m ft in it. Says it don't work on charger and doesn't turn on. But worked with battery. Gonna buy it and use the gpu and Palmrest speakers then see if it can be fixed with a new DC Jack and give it my girlfriend.

 

i use a program called Nvidia inspector, very small simple overclocking program

 

Even i have a coolermaster docking , with 3 fans on it,when i play games i take more than 90 celsius in the GPU and generally in the laptop.

What should i do?

I get this kind of temperatures with minecraft :S

 

my 9600m gt 1gb with ddr2 doesnt even get that hot

it idles around 45c and 73c during load.
i even have a 30% overclock on it successfully
hell my old thin formfactor laptop with overclock never got that warm.

I changed into the GPU , Chipset , And CPU.

The Celsius are -5 only. I still get 75-80 celsius. (with open backplate and fan blowing on it)

 

LoL ok first of the 9600m ddr2 has lower temps because the memory and gpu share the same plate for cooling so because the ddr2 has lower temps than DDR3 versions of 9600m gt or 9700m gt thats why has lower temps.

Second my Petros BIG mistake to have the BACKPLATE OPEN the cooling on the 8930g use heat Pipes and fun when you take off the Back plate you will notice on the side of the back plate a PILOW a soft material with metal fabric this Material is to Close the holes of the Air when the fun spins.

So When you take of the Back plate the Spot between the heatpipes and the fun has holes thats why if the fun works at 100% only 50% goes throw the heatpipes. Check the metal foam material that is on the Back plate if its in good contition and when you close the back plate this material closes the hall . if it does with Close Back plate you will have -10 Celcius with stock.

If you want -5 more celcius you can mode the metal plate on the gpu if you cut it like i do and use Zalman heatsinks for the gpu ram then the Heat pipes will cool only the gpu not the memorys so you get -5 celcius more.

 

Squee you can overclock your card anywhere you want but you will see no diference at all its down from DDR2 memory, sory for that . Only DDR3 version has gains from oc. Use some bencmarks to see it for you self.

ANd something else that all of you must know , over the 90Celcius the card AUTO downclocks her self so you can oc the card but is no point to do that if you dont first solve the heat problem.

 

yea i think something should be checked out on that it shows your min temperature as 72c

hell i had 49c minimum on my ddr3 9200mgs overclocked. in a case that was thinner than a macbook.


agony really? when i said 30% OC i meant 650core,1625 shader and 520 memory up from 500core,1250shader and 400memory gpu-z is reporting more bandwidth used not as much as ddr3 but still.

Had an idea to get some thin copper plating and fit it on the removable back panel. Then get some of the square copper gpu heatsinks. If lined correctly could make a conection for better heat dissepation.

If not gonna get a cooling mat.

 

I was thinking about buying a SATA III drive for my Acer 8930G. From what I understand from this thread, the mobo has SATA II specs, but could someone with more technical knowledge tell me: would a SATA III drive be backwards-compatible with the older connector?

Just get a data 2 hard drive

 

I was kinda hoping that it would work for SATA III also. I recently found some great deals on some SATA III SSD's. Also, I will reuse the harddrive when I upgrade in a few years.

 

Also , one other question.

The touchscreen device on the left which you can adjust the volume up and down.Is mis-working.Suddenly even i can change tracks and so on.

The volume doesn't synchronize with the computer.

 

known solution is turn off laptop remove battery and charger and hold in power button for 12 seconds.

Really well I got a 9700m gt from an Acer from eBay for half of what the 9600m ddr3 are going for.

Gonna usebthat as a referance for now to see how badly I either need to mod the heatsink or need a new heatsink.

What price you selling them? I may get that and resell. This 9700m after using it as a reference model since I heard they run hotter than the fx.
Also any chance of you safelybflashing it to a gtx. 280m if I buy it.

Other than that I'm saving up for a x9100 e0 stepping so I has a lot to do.

most have found that 6gb is the limit, mine wont ever boot to the bios with 8gb, but runs great on 6gb..
there was someone that claimed they had it running on 8gb but never gave any prove

 

That's what I was referring to, actually. (Trust me, I read the last 30 pages!). Someone claimed that 8gb would work, but there was no follow-up so I was hoping someone would have updated it.

I have got a problem on my AS8930G 904G50Mn, I was downloading a bios 1.13 and was zipped, but it was in autoexec and starting to wite the bios on.
The problem is that this file is for the 8951G and my notebook is bricked.
I've called the Acer and they said to me I've to send the pc to assistance for replacing the Mobo.
Now I will ask to everyone knows this 8930, if I can get the MBASZ0B004 (this is the last realese) board original to replace by myself on pc ?
Cause It costs in Acer almost €. 350,00.

Question anyone know where i can get the GPU heatsink for the acer 8930g

I need the MxM-3a version that comes with the 9700m gt
upgrading from a 1gb 9600m gt ddr2 so its a differnt heatsink.

that and i dont want any major increases.

may try using it with the older heatsink with some mods and see how temperature is. probably would underclock it though to stabilize it and see ihow it undervolts.

my acer 8930g is in perfect condition since december 8th 2008 and at moment playing prototype 1 on it. but i do have slight wear on touch pad part where it has worn away to show white. any one know what i can use to cover it up. something that can be bought in any shop would be good. i did try getting nail polish in grey but did not work

Hi, i am new to the whole process of upgrading my laptop, i have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600m gs, i was wondering if upgrading to the 96/700m gt would be worthwhile.
also judging by a quick read on the owners lounge apparantly the heatsink needs to be changed too? could someone please clarify because i have no experience with the technical side - be gentle.

also a side question, does the laptop support graphics cards out side the 9000m series?

outrunn yes it does, you can use the same heatsink if you upgradre to a 9600m gt but 9700m or above would require the heatsink im trying to get.

quadro fx 3700m is the most powerful card you can get will play most games on high/ultra

 

ah ok thanks, would a 1gb 9600m gt require another power plug? i know on desktops that graphics cards often have their own power supply, obviously this isnt possible on a laptop. any help is useful thankyou.

hello every one. I need a little help...

I have a problem with my laptop ATM. My fan doesn't speed up at all... it's running but always at the minimum speed... So when I try to play, the laptop shutdown after 5 or 10 minutes.

I don't know what can cause the problem, the senser seams to means work because I can see the temp reading in speedfan. the temps goes over 100C.

Is the fan broken or it's something wrong with the motherboard?

Is there a way to have a fan with a manual control?

part number 60.ASZ0N.001 or the 60.AP70N.001(this may be it its for the 9650m)

finding that when playing prototype 1 laptop just shuts down so out of all my games i finding alan wake pc and alan wake american nightmare, prototype 1 and mercenaries 2 shut down. so this week gonna buy a cooler master u3 where you can place the fans anywhere you want and it fits the acer 18.4 inch version perfect

wow got my arctic silver thermal paste today took laptop apart. put it on and since doing it no games shut down very pleased with it
