ok thanks, in that case would my laptop support the Nvidia GeForce 120 M graphics card? apparantly that is simillar perfomance to the 9600m gt card, so i was wondering if i would need to modify or buy another heatsink for it to work, i have only found the 1gb version so far

Can Confirm 60.AP70N.001 would be the heatsink you need if ever wanted larger mxm 3a gpu.

And it should support it ask in the mxm cards thread though you wont neeed a new heatsink as the gt card you mentioned is same size as the 9600m gt. but you would want the 512mb ddr3 version

    can anyone tell me whats wrong with my screen from the following symptoms;

    screen went dark very suddenly.
in a brightly lit room information is only just visible on the screen.
in a darkened room the screen is pitch black.
during boot-up the screen is just as dark.
no combination of FN, F6 or arrow keys has ANY effect on the screen, even momentarily.

My instincts tell me its the inverter or backlight, however after extensive searching online I havent found anything that clearly distinguishes between the two.

Question for Shakennstirred you have usb 3.0 in signature which adapter are you using and drivers.
I have Two StarTech 2poort flush mounting adapters usb 3.0 but cannot get them to work properly latest drivers from startech and renesas ones tried.
They allow 1 pendisk to be seen but WD HDD 1TB not and vice versa and are only visible when I install drivers when one or the other is plugged in.
Also when waiting for the usual what will you do in windows takes a whole ten min's before I see a drive ???
Reason I ask is the spec sheet in your sig is exactly the same as my spec only SSD is 160GB.

If you can see any script then it is your backlight as the inverter converts digital signal to viewable screen and the backlight brightens it so you can see it clearly.
The 18.4 inch screen is dual backlight which means the inverter board has two power supply's on it .
Just renewed one couple of weeks ago for a friend.

Yes have tried using supplied cable and powered external usb 2.0 hub and no different with either of the adapters.
Tested both the usb3.0 pendisk and WD HDD usb3.0 on a friends computer yesterday and he needed new drivers for his inbuilt usb 3.0 poorts which was also by Renesas and noticed the driver for his system was april 2012 and checking system manager does not show usb 3.0 controller or root hub but they worked perfectly and copied a 1.4GB file from one to the other in less than 40 sec's so the usb 3.0 hardware are both good.
Laptop not have to try the same driver download from the Medion Akoya website and see if this works ??

Went to a local computer repair shop to get a quote for repairing my backlight.
The "technician" said that "the inverter controls the power to the backlight" and therefore that should be replaced first.
By coincidence, he has a dead 8930, from which he thought he might be able to harvest the required spares to fix mine.
On opening his he discovered the 2 laptops were actually quite different inside, but he opened mine as well to get the part no. for bit he wanted to replace.
    PN 6038B0019401
When he called to order the part he was advised "not to touch the laptop as this is normally an underlying issue elsewhere with these Acer's" !!!!

To make matters worse, when I got home, the blue power light comes on when I plug in the mains, but no lights come on along the front edge and it won't even power up when I try to start it :(

    From the most likely choices.

CPU - Intel x9100 3ghz dual core which can be overclocked and undervolted
GPU -9700m gt or Quadro FX 3700m(gtx280 basically but right connectors)
USB - Express Card USB 3.0 Ports
HDD - Anything that 2.5inch aka sata 3 ssd,s work in sata 2 ports.
    There are 2 bays.

6gb is the max it will run with and yes you will need to remove one of the 2gb sticks to put the 4gb stick in

NVIDIA® Quadro® FX 3800M - faster than GTX 285M would that fit in and if it comes with motherboard can you just take chip out and put in your existing motherboard. and would i have to do anything to laptop to be able to have the gtx280m or the gtx 285m or put it in to motherboard and then turn on laptop and it works?

Hi Guy's just thought I would share a titbit gleaned off the net which worked for me.
    Got hold of a dead 8920G-934G64BN T9300 4GB 120GB SSD OCZ 9650M GT.
Took it apart tested usual things ie ram motherboard batt cpu etc etc even tried my own video card a 9700M GT nothing.
Closer look at parts revealed slight discolouration on one chip of video card so put it in the oven for ten min's at 250 degrees and it works fine now.
New OS installed win 64 pro retail and been running now for solid 8 hours and no problems so far.
Only took it in for spares for my own 8930G but what the hell have at least gained a blueray drive and bluetooth for a couple of hours work .
When I took this thing apart its cooling was fully blocked so had obviously unseated the chip from the card and cooking it for ten min's just about melts the solder again to re-seat it.
Will be stress testing after all software updates to put it under some heavy loads like rendering 20Gb of film in Adobe Prem Pro.

on the x9100 extreme processor for the 8930g i finding quite a few but they all have diff things in the title like
INTEL X9100 3.06GHz QS mobile CPU processor
INTEL X9100 3.06GHz OEM SLB48 mobile CPU processor
Intel Core 2 Duo X9100 3.06Ghz QS QBDW CPU processor

so which one is it lol and do you just lift it of the motherboard as it just pushed on and place on your laptop ?

INTEL X9100 3.06GHz OEM SLB48 mobile CPU processor is the official one

the other 2 are Engineering samples but would work all the same.
Aim for the OEM one or if you can this type (i jsut wn this one lol)

Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 3.06Ghz QHBQ CPU processor 45 chipset | eBay

Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 3.06Ghz QHBQ CPU

This is also an engineering sample but its the rarer one with ES stepping instead of C0. Which results in it running cooler.

Also you cant have a gtx 280/285 in this laptop.

But you can have a quadro fx 3700m in it which is the same spec as the gtx 280m

its ddr3 1gb gpu which same speeds as gtx 280 but laptop spports it.some can be flashed also to come up as a 280m.

are yu sure your on 64bit windows btw cause 3gb usable is a limitation with the OS not the laptop

Does anybody here know if it's possible to disable the touchpad on the lefthandside with the movie controls? I never use it and if I touch it while the laptop is off, it will startup with that Acer Movie program which annoys the hell out of me.

Secondly, if I choose to upgrade my 8930g from the standard Core 2 Duo T6400 to a Core 2 Extreme X9100 will I also need to replace my heatsink and if so, which should I take?

Thridly, I'm running Vista 32 bit atm, will I see a big performance boost when I upgrade to W7 Ultimate x64?

you dont need a heatsink for the new cpu.

windows 7 is a performance boost in general and with the 6gb of ram you will notice it.

also because of your old cpu having 800mhz fsb and your new one having 1066mhz fsb. your ram will run at its max speed.

when you install windows 7 you wont have the acer movie garbage on it so you can not worry about it. though hitting the very top panel activates media center.

    Watch your speeds increase

lol im not that rich. and all you do is remove the heatsink for the cpu. theres a small screw that holds the cpu in place. unscrew replace cpu then screw it again. then reapply heatsink.

quadro fx 3700m is highest that will work its practically a gtx 280m

the actual gtx 280m and 285m will not work in the laptop

also found out my acer 8930g is using the chi mei screen and not the samsung counterpart.

meaning the quality isnt as good and the fact it runs 50 nits less brighter than site specifications state.
explains why the whites also are more of a cream my last laptop a samsung np-x460 had 300nits brightness and it was always at max it helped exponentially though it was led backlit.

gonna probably save up for a matt samsung lcd with the extra 50nits brightness which is a 20% boost. that and using nvidia control panel to put up vibrance with no glare will be a boost

so is that card ok then the link i sent its a better card than 512mb 9700m gt yes as i do alot of gaming on laptop even if it means lowering resolution a bit for stable framerates. so when you put the quadro fx 3700m is highest that will work. willl the quadro fx 3800m work as thats all i can find and what video card you got in yours at the moment.

also if the quadro fx 3700m is same as gtx 280m what is the quadro fx 3800m the same as because the link says faster than gtx285m. but how would you flash card so it no longer quadro but a gtx card to find drivers on nvidia site better. also how is your quadro card doing, do you game alot on it.

you see the pins at bottom. thats why it fits and x 3800m doesnt its due to mxm type.

I have a 9700m gt upgraded froma ddr2 9600m gt and had to get new heatsink.

ask in the graphics card section about updating its bios or you can get working drives from laptopvideo2go.

i did do some reading before and it did say if you have a quadro card and want to make it into a geforce just download the geforce drivers for it instead. as you said its the same as gtx280m you just would download geforce 280 drivers

Has anyone had to replace the battery on their 8930, and done it successfully.

I have tried 2 'compatible' batteries and neither will charge. When first plugged in the battery meter shows them charging (icon flashes) and states '6% available (plugged in, charging)', but it shows this permanently and doesn't charge.

    Anyone any suggestions??

    Thanks.

I mean sticker, with image . Not to change the top cover :D

I haven't done it, but to test it out, i have also put my battery into the computer to charge it just now and it doesn't charge. ( maybe the cause of that is because i haven't charged the battery since ages :p )

Batteries do that, if left too long they seem to die.

However my problem is with new batteries being recognised by the laptop, but not charging.
