upgrade the cpu, to x9100 or Q9000 if motherboard lets you
    upgrade the gpu ,to fx3700
    upgrade hdd to SSD
upgrade the ram from 4gig to 6gig ddr3 1066mhz max
upgrade to usb 3 via the express port
add tv card internal, will need to mod the case for aerial though
ugrade the screen to 1080p if you have the cheaper low res screen
    that about covers it really
all this is covered in this thread if people would just read it

Has anyone got the multimedia touchpad going with Windows 8?

The led's on mine light up and all the buttons work like 'hold' and 'mute', but the volume doesn't work. It lights up, but does not correspond to the actual volume of the laptop.

the volume does go up n down but you have to keep you're finger on the dial, top or the dial to go up bottom to go down, not great but least you can change it.
win 8 has its own volume slider that come on the screen top left, it must be messing with acer software

I have an 8930 which is still the bog standard one as supplied from Acer (except I have installed Win7 (32bit Pro) and a second hard drive).

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz
    4.00 GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    Bios V1.04

I now have a need to edit video files from my camera which are AVCHD (1920x1080 50fps HD) and although the files will play fine in WM and AVC just for playback, when I edit them in progs like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere the previews are very jerky.

Someone has suggested that to overcome the jerky playback for editing I should upgrade to 64 bit Windows 8 and install 8gb RAM.

I am hoping that maybe 6GB RAM would do it (as this seems to be the max that people have successfully run) but have a couple of questions for those that are in the know:

    - To run 6Gb do I need to update the bios to 1.2
    - Is a different version of bios required for 64Bit OS as opposed to 32Bit
    - What memory should I buy (currently has 2 x 2Gb Samsung

Hopefully someone will be able to assist

    TIA.

no any bios will run the 6gig ram and the 64bit OS.
any ram thats 1066mhz ddr3 should run fine

I see what you mean. You keep your finger either at the top or bottom and the volume moves slowly up or down. Not ideal, but at least works like you say.

with the 8930g being so old now I don't see acer fixing it
so guess we will have to find away of turning the windows 8 volume app that's stopping the acer one working

    Thanks for that.
I will get hold of a trial copy of 64Bit Win 8 and some more memory and see what happens.
If I find a need to, the next step will be to try and upgrade the processor to an X9100 or Q9000 if I can find one at the right price.
Do either of these need any other mods (eg new cooler fans)??

no they go straight in with no mods, the x9100 will defiantly work the Q9000 only on certain motherboards

The 8930g might be 'old' now, but I've not found anything remotely comparable. I love it, which is why I'm rather spending a little money upgrading it than buying something new that I won't enjoy as much.

It's still lightning quick for what I need it for. I produce hard dance/trance, and it runs perfectly with Cubase and my mastering programs.

The Q9000 definitely doesn't work on all models. I've just bought one last week under the impression it would work, but it didn't. Now I'm on the hunt for either a T9900 or an X9100.

Is there a way of determining whether the Q9000 will work with a particular motherboard or not???

There are some T9900 here (link below) which say they will work with chipset 45 (which is the 8930 motherboard type isn't it??)

    Intel® T9900

From what I remember if you're motherboard serial number (visible from under the RAM if I recall correctly) ends in 004 you're in luck, if you've a MB ending 001 then the best you're going to be able to use is an X9100.
If my memory deceives me no doubt someone will be along before too long to correct me...
    Hope this helps. :spinny:

I had an e-mail back from the ebay vendor I listed for the T9900 and he has confirmed that he has had customers fit these to the Acer 8930.

    2 Questions:
    - Can anyone here confirm this processor will work
    - is it better (faster) than the X9100 (and Q9000) and worth the extra cost ? (£150 as opposed to £100-120 for the X9100)

the reason to get the x9100 over the T9900 is the X9100 is multiplier unlocked so you can overclock it like I have mine
the only thing the T9900 has over the x9100 is it uses 35watts power so runs cooler, but you cant overclock it

shakenstirred i am in england like you near birmingham. i looked at site you gave me no parts for 8930g series so i emailed them. so to squee666 about that link to the 1gb vid card is that how they always come as. as i see dell ones with fan and heatsink attached, do you just pull the vid card of the board is it pins like the processor as i seeing the boards like the one in link you gave and also wrapped up by ppl doing dell ones with fan and heatsink as well. do you unscrew out gpu board and fit in there or can you pull of the vid card and fit it into are existing board. as soon as i get answer will order it but unsure till i get reply.

you have the get the HP one which just looks like a chip. It will just slot in place and relace heatsink and thermal then supposedly run. I would try but dont have a job so money is out of my range for thus gpu for now.

The dell i linked is what all of the dell quadro fx 3700m look like when you remove the gpu. It CANNOT be fitted into an acer. for on it wouldnt fit and 2 the pins are not compatible at all.

Guys question, for you people using a 9700m gt by default what is your power supply. xxV xxAmp.

I upgraded from 9600m gt ddr2 to a 9700m gt and finally got a battery replacement but it seems to charge really slow. i think it may be the charge doesnt output enough power. the battery for me is 4.8v 5200amh/4800amh

I had a problem with batteries.
My laptop is 3 years old and the original battery now only lasts about 20 mins and dies without warning whilst still showing over 40%.

So I bought a replacement off ebay. It had 30% charge when it arrived, but instead of re-charging when plugged into the mains it discharged and then would not re-charge.
The vendor sent me a replacement (never asked for the first one back).
Same problem (but with 7% charge on arrival). Again a replacement was sent with no request to return the others.

The 3rd arrived with 15% charge, and this time fully charged, it then discharged over 2 hours and recharged again.

So I was well pleased with the vendor and his attitude, and still have the 2 faulty batteries along with the 3rd.

I have a problem with my Touchpad in Win 8, it doesn't seem to register anything - no Hold/Mute button response, and no volume control.

    Anyone any suggestions??

Hi, I'm interested in upgrade my laptop.

    I want to upgrade:

    CPU: Q9000 -> QX9300
Ram: 4GB -> 6GB (wanted 8 but confirmed that 8GB will not work)
    9700M -> Quadro 3700M
    Hard Drive 500GB -> 500GB + SSD 256GB
Old Battery -> New battery that will last

Those upgrades are possible? Will I need new AC Charger, or heatsinks?

    Thanks!

6gb ram is max this can take. quadro fx will work though not that many people have used it.

Battery is hit and miss with replacements. though should work

just keep one of the ram sticks already in and get 1 4gb of ddr3 with a 1066mhz speed as that's the max speed the 8930g will run at
also what cpu are you running? as some that the 8930g comes with are running at 800mhz fsb, which will also mean the ram will be also be running down at 800mhz

After upgrading from Vegas 10 (32 bit, no GPU assistance) to Vegas 12 (64-bit with GPU assistance) those problems went away. You also need to upgrade your video driver to utilize the GPU. I am running version 306.97. Without upgrading from stock driver you will only realize a 50% increase in performance instead of 254% (ran same project in both 10 and 12)

After upgrading, the preview is a whole lot smoother, and encoding is 254% faster, The Q9000 and 9700M max out at about 80% usage each, still have 4GB free (6GB installed) on the RAM still need to tweak the settings and may eek out a little more speed. Have to use throttlestop to slow the machine down to 87.5% to prevent overheating as both CPU and GPU are on the same heat sink.

Running windows 64bit version 7 home premium, 750GB 7200 RPM hybrid primary drive , 1TB secondary drive.

    Thanks for that suggestion.

I have now installed Vegas 12 to try it and have run it using the default settings. Although it has reduced the problem noticeably the 'jerkiness' can still be seen and the sound has 'stutter' to it.
From the Nvidia Control panel I see I am currently on driver 310.70.
Is there any changes I need to make to the Program preferences to tweak it?

I see what you say about using ThrottleStop - and am not at all familiar with that programme - but one step at a time ;)

Looking at the specs that you provided, my machine has double the cores (4 versus 2) that yours does at the same processor speed.

Also the video card is slightly faster (20-30%) see links at https://forums.geforce.com/default/...-9600m-1gb-i-guess-thats-a-hard-one-2-choose/ for details.

Coupled with a Hybrid 7200 RPM Hybrid drive (about 90% the speed of a pure SSD as the SSD I initially had gave up it's ghost) which is quantum leap beyond the basic 5400/7200 RPM drive that comes with the machine (it can cut a four minute job to 30 seconds for some operations - but should not have much impact on video processing except when processing multiple streams on the same drive) I have all the input on the hybrid drive, and all the output on the slower standard drive. The bottleneck for our class of machines are in the CPU/GPU for most tasks.

Even with more than double the hardware specs, I still get jerkiness (about 10-20 fps for version 12 versus 2-4 fps for version 10 on the same project) when using one or more overlays on top of the background video at 1080-60i. I often mix 1080-60i (1440 x 1080 video tape), 1080-30p (1920 x 1080 DSLR), 720-60p (sports cam), & 480i (old school cams) with text and or scene transitions, and usually encode to either 1080 or 720 depending on the target (HDTV or Droid Tablet). Keeping that in mind during the transitions, my computer is trying to process up to 4 HD streams (even if upsampled) simultaneously where the stuttering occurs (equivalent processing a single 4k video stream).

10-20 fps is a usable rate considering that is what the old Super-8 film was shot at versus 2-4 fps which is more like a fast slide show.

Now to do some additional tweaking within the program -- you will have to play around with your settings under:

Options --> Preferences --> Video (tab)

Change the dynamic RAM preview, increase this value, experiment to find the best setting while keeping, keep the lowest amount where you do not perceive any more gain by making it larger. Be careful not to exceed, or come close to your physical RAM ceiling.

Rendering threads, use a doubling multiple of the processors you have (try 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, & 64) to find the best setting.

    GPU change to nVidia

Restart after changes have been made.

Additional non-video software changes to make - shut down your biggest non-essential programs/processes in windows task manager and task bar - basically anything sucking more than 2-3% of processor and >50 MB RAM, and/or accessing the disk frequently. Also tell your anti-virus program to not scan your video program, and also tell it to ignore your video working directories - the case of video processing anti-virus programs are a virus unto themselves by definition (they significantly slow down your system, and cause negative effects).

If you are advanced you can set processor affinity to high, this will make Vegas run smoother and more efficiently, among other tweaks that are better covered elsewhere around the forums.

One last thing, I noticed that your bios is 1.04, you may want to upgrade that too as the first versions were treating the DDR3 RAM as DDR2 RAM which will also boost speed. I had 1.01 and switched to 1.10, you may wish to use CPU-Z (freeware) to determine the speed that your system memory is operating at (Front Speed Bus should be 1066, if it under a 1000 you will want to update your BIOS as well).

You also may want to do some research, here is an article/video that deals with your issue in version 11. Why does my Preview Window Lag in Sony Vegas ?

...and you also need to upgrade your OS to 64-bit, with 32-bit you are limited to 3GB of RAM even though you have 4GB and want to upgrade to 6GB.

Update: Ideal settings for encoding to an android tablet transcoding mixed 1080p/i video to 720p for a 304% (from version 10 at 32-bit) increase is counter-intuitive to what I posted above. Ideal settings are as follows GPU enhanced codecs (do above settings non-gpu enhanced codecs).

64 Megabytes Dynamic Preview RAM (MB) max
8 Maximum number of rendering threads
GPU of video acceleration is turned OFF (apparently it conflicts with the codec acceleration if turned on)

    MainConcept AVC/AAC
Audio: 128 Kbps, 48,000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, AAC
    Video: 29.970 fps, 1280x720 Progressive, YUV, 1,500 Kbps/2,000 Kbps
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000
    Render using CUDA if available

I'd be interested in how it goes, and what kind of performance bump you get (gaming and/or video processing). I'm assuming you got the HP version of the 3700M for installation, correct me if I am wrong.
