Hm. I guess that dvd drive has to do something with it. I have the 4810TZ. Did you have to set any settings, jayayess1190?

No, the screen brightness is the lowest it can go, 7 was in Power Saver mode, wifi was, on bluetooth off (as it always is). Even in Ubuntu I can get around that much. Also, my SU9400 is undervolted.

i guess u might be using RMClock, right? but are u actually undervolting? as far as i know u cannot really change the VID on the timeline series, its just downclocking itself on powersaving mode and although u can actually "change" the setting in RMClock, the voltage stays the same when u check with CPUID monitor or CPU-Z.

I have a 3810TG and at first I noticed shorter battery life. But after updating the drivers, I'm actually having the same or slightly better battery life than Vista now.

P.S. I noticed problems with the Intel SATA driver v8.9 - it makes Windows pause while booting for about 30 seconds. I uninstalled those and just use the driver that comes with Windows 7 which is working fine so far. Windows 7 boot times are fantastic.

I'm not sure if it works. In Vista, it sat at .875, but in Windows 7 it won't go lower than .900.

Hello guys & gals, who have 3G modem & the issue that keyboard launcher unable to switch on/off wifi&3G.
I've got very good news for you. After many experiments I managed to get working solution.

In order to make it work you should do the following (order of install could also be important)
    - Clean install of Windows7
    - (very important!) all Windows Updates EXCEPT ALL drivers. Reboot
    - chipset driver (from Intel's web site). Reboot
    - network card driver (atheros). Reboot
    - wifi driver (again fom intel, not Acer). Reboot
    - 3g modem driver (in my case - Option). Reboot
    - all other drivers (Acer's ATI video, cardreader, webcam, etc.)
    - (very important!) PowerSmart Manager 4.07.3008 for Win7
    - at last - Launcher 3.0.05

My fault was that I'm was not installing PowerSmart :(

P.S. Rep.points are appreciated if this one or my earlier posts/links (like service manual or latest Option's firmware) was helpful for you. Thanks.

Undervolting with RMClock actually works for me, according to CPU-Z
    [IMG] [IMG]
    I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x86
(this screenshot was made on battery so the cpu is at 1.2ghz. The cpu is 1.4 when I'm on AC power).
    I've got the 4810TG.

has anyone successfully done an off-the-books upgrade from a Windows 7 RC to the real deal? Windows isnt allowing RC users to upgrade directly to the RTM versions of 7, you have to do a clean install. As a Windows 7 RC user who finally got everything working the way i like, i dont want to do a clean install. lucky for me there are solutions, editing registry files here and there and you can do a legit upgrade with the RC. i want to know if anyone has tried this back door method and been successful?

I tried this on my other computer and it wasn't worth it in my opinion. It takes a few hours (at most) to reinstall programs and readjust settings. It will (most likely) take longer to do a sneaky upgrade. `

But when you did it it did work, right? Thing is i spent a number of weeks perfecting all my drivers and programs and associated plugins and codecs and settings and all that hoopla. If i did a clean install, i would take me weeks or more to get all the settings in all my programs and everything else the way i like it. a few more hours fussing around making this upgrade work is worth it for me...

Anybody besides me think the hard drive in 3810/4810 is making way too much noise? The difference in noise level (and vibration) when hd is active/off is really distracting! It's like there's a second fan in there!! Does anyone know whether the Timeline hd's can be acoustically managed?

If you run into issues with doing Windows 7 upgrade with these timelines try to get the drivers and apps disk and load it up on a USB thumb drive and run it. I ran into a problem where the CD rom drive wasnt recognized right after first boot of Win7 Upgrade.

HDMI PROBLEM UNDEN WINDOWS 7!!! I have an acer aspire 3810t-6415 notebook. I have just updated my Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit, to Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit a couple of days ago, it was elegible for a windows 7 upgrade by Acer. When I connect my notebook to a tv via HDMI cable the video playback becomes slightly choppy (definately can tell the difference), and upon disconnecting it, it works perfectly again. I used it in twin monitor mode. I tried older an vga driver, the newest one, tried it in power saver, balanced, and high performance mode, and on a different tv, different video playback programs (eg. VLC), but the problem remained the same. I only had one window open so too many windows cannot be the preblem. I have an integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD video card, with the driver version 8.15.10.1872. Under Vista it worked perfectly, I have not experience this problem before I got Windows 7. What might cause this problem, what might be the soultion?

I received my 3810T after that Acer changed the mic cable. Now the right side of the touchpad seems not working anymore (also the sensibility of the all touchpad seems worse). Am I the first with this iussue ? Is the only solution to ship it back to Acer ? :(

Hi i am not sure if this has been raised before (still ploughing thru the 157 pages randomly), but does anyone have a problem with the battery life? Even when the acer timeline 4810TG is idling, with wifi & bluetooth switched off, and no program running, i still only get about 5 hours of battery life.

What is worse is , on windows 7, it drops to 4 hours tops.

Any idea what might be wrong?

I'm beginning to think that ACER used different components on even the same series Timelines 3810T/4810T... Since mine is dead silent, I mean I really cannot hear a thing, plugged or unplugged. It's a shame that some of our fellow timeline owners here have the noise issues. Tsk tsk...

The weird thing about it is that while I THINK it worked, there are so few visible differences between Win7 RC and RTM that if I didn't know better I wouldn't be able to say. Plus I had to disable the Windows activation service, which means no Windows updates. Note that this was before the retail release, (I used an MSDNAA copy of the RTM) so maybe there are better instructions available. Note that things get even worse if you plan on "upgrading" to anything but Win7 Ultimate, since the RC is Ultimate and you would be effectively down-grading the version--it doesn't like that.

I don't know how many drivers and codecs you've had to tweak, but I would argue that you would spend more time doing the RC to RTM upgrade than a clean install. Just my $0.02, but good luck whichever option you choose?

Yes, I have a 5810TZ and experience the same thing. For a while I actually thought it was the fan!

Basically it sounds like a fan which seems to accelerate whenever there is disk access. I realized it was the hard drive when it finally spinned down.

I tried using HDDScan to enable AAM but that makes no difference.

I suspect that this is related to drive model used. Mine is a WD Scorpio Blue 3200BEVT. What about yours?

I tried removing the drive and connecting to it a desktop. It is indeed fairly noisy compared to a Caviar Green, but the lack of dampening in the Timeline probably doesn't help either.

Last thing is that I found reports of people complaining about noisy BEVT drives in Dell laptops too, and one person reported that the "fan noise" only occured with Windows, not Ubuntu...

Hi guys, I have some quick questions now that I've received my Windows 7 upgrade kit from Acer. I have a 3810T.

My question is whether the upgrade kit can only be used on the 3810T. I have some other computers around the house, (a Dell desktop is what I'm eyeing) would the upgrade kit work? I really don't know, but can someone shed some light on this?

Secondly, I've heard some mixed reports about Windows 7 on the Timelines. Some people claim that battery life has gotten worse. What's the consensus on this? Thanks.

Any chance you could upload again or reactivate? I would really appreciate it. I am having a hard time in Win7 and have tried almost everything except firmware upgrade. I am still on version 1.7.0.Hd

How can you tell that it's locked? Mine is streaming data but i cannot get a fix. I assume its because I dont have the multi-band antenna.

    Hello there,

After I found out that my version of the acer timeline 3810T eventually didn't have WiMAX, I bought the Intel 5350 on eBay and suggested it would be easy to install.

    Now my question is;

Is it possible to install the intel 5350 module replacing the intel 5100 module (which seems to be a bit smaller). After lifting the keyboard, I cannot see if it's possible and it would be sad to find out it's not possible after I've dissassembled the whole thing.

The module can be placed at the right top corner, but I think it's impossible to use the already built-in antennas from there.

    Thanks in advance,

    Richard

What exactly the problem you experience? I've had a lot and now all of them solved so I'm quite happy with my Win7x64 setup ;) Probably if you describe what exactly you are doing and what's not working, I could help you by advise...
BTW: if your problem is that you cannot turn ON the radio on your GTM then you do not need to update firmware, but you shold take a look at my last post here

Acer's 2.8.1.0Hd and FTS'es 2.9.5.0Hd are uploaded to the collector's account and thus shouldn't expire anymore. New links are:

Rep.points for the links are much appreciated. Thanks.

I've had the same and 've read somewhere that it's how it works when its locked. But probably its wrong? please let me know if you'll somehow succeed with getting a fix from your GTM382...

Thanks for the links. Rep given!

I have been struggeling with this for about a weeks time after I did a clean install of Win7.
I am not sure if I remember now exactly what I did first, but I think I installed the '32 driver from Option's site. The connection now showed up but only as roaming. Here it did not show my tele operator but only a long code.
I then install the Hokku utility without any more luck. It could not find the device. The '32 driver was still there.
I manually deleted the drivers and installed the Hokku again ( now with '26 driver) and I dont think there was any difference, except that it was now waiting for the device to respond (which it never did) I also think it was now that it recognized my tele operator but it displayed it as IQ ( teleoperator).
First with only the '30 driver installed and not the Hokku I was able to get something that looked like it was connected (if I right-click the connection, it showed Statistics as an option) but nothing happen if I try to open. It still seemed to only be roaming.
I got the impression that the hokku did not work well together with Win7. I have tried I think most combinations of uninstalling and installing different drivers but this was the best result I could get.
I have always been able been able to swith the radio on/off with the switch. I read the postings here after I had tried most and at least I got hope that it should be possible.
I did not take exact notes of what I did so I might be running a little in circles. If you have any directions to give I will follow.

Regarding the gps, I was looking at this antenna.
From what I can see by magnifying the pics, the connnector should be the same. I could not find a pic of the Sierra Aircard anywhere to check up against though.
I will order it and try so I will get peace of mind if the gps works or not.

Aha, I see. The problem is that both .30 and .32 drivers are actually w/o any Option's interface in it. It relies on new Win7 "mobile broadband" feature, and I found it quite unreliable (buggy?), at least with Options.
And your specific problem is that hokku is not working @all with "mobile broadband" drivers and needs to have standard drivers installed
All you really need 2do is
    1) clean install Win7 (in order to get rid of prior attempts). Or at least clean everything out so that you have your Globetrotter not recognized and no drivers for it installed....
    2) go to Option's web site and download "GlobeTrotter® Connect 3.1 for Modules 3.1d0-1107_P" instead of "Driver installer 5.1.32.0" and install it. It will install BOTH drivers and hokku, and I can confirm that it really works in both 32 and 64 Win7 flawlessly. You should be fine with this ;)

I finally managed to get it working now :D but I had to go back to .12 drivers with Connection Manager 2.
This driver seems to keep Win7 from interfeiring.
I had it connected with .26 but there was always a DNS and proxy setting error. I found no way around this problem.
Perhaps it needs the firmware update. I will wait with this until I get the GPS antenna and have it tested first. I will report back what happens then.
    Thanks

Thanks for the input, Nebula! Interesting find about loud BEVTs in Dells. My hd is also a WD, but it says WDC (C for Caviar? not sure) 5000BEVT. I'm thinking maybe the Intel Laminar Wall Jet has something to do with the noise level as well, on the 4810 at least there are air outlets right next to where the hd is sitting, so the chassis doesn't muffle the whooshing from the hd (or the fan) at all. I Guess an SSD is next on my shopping list. Adding insult to injury, the hd emits a constant, very high pitch, barely audible electronic-ish whine. Kinda similar to this post

I'm using WDC 5000BEVT too in my 4810TZ. I can hear constant seeking sound from the HDD and it's louder than the fan even in AC mode. Previously I have a Samsung 400GB HDD and it was very queit. I guess WD Scorpio is noisy and the vibration level is high.

You are my last hope guys.

I'm upgraded WinVista with Win7 Upgrade CD, that resulted in a total mess.
    (Don't know what went wrong).

I installed Win7 clean then, used my key and it worked fine.

BUT - whatever I do: I can't get ATI CCC to run ; that means, ATI is ALWAYS running, every minute .. I simply want to deactivate it .. :(

    What can I do?

    Thanks for the tip!

I just checked Acer support and now they have BIOS 1.15. Just updated from BIOS 1.10 and indeed the pausing during the boot is fixed. Also, I can now adjust screen brightness using the Fn keys for the ATI graphics.

Noone? I simply can't work with my Acer at the moment due the fact that the battery is empty after nearly 3 hours and the fan of the ATI is working non stop.

I just want to deactivate it again ; how can I fix this`?

btw: I reinstalled Win7 two times now, issue always turns up if the Mobility Intel Drivers are installed, but they do every time ... how f**** annoying.

Does your laptop have switchable graphics? If yes, then DO NOT install the Intel Graphics driver package. Install only the ATI graphics driver package (it includes Intel & ATI drivers). Then you should be able to right-click on desktop and choose Configure Switchable Graphics to switch between the two.

    Hello,
I have recentley activated the GPS function on a GTM382E wich comes with 3810tg and It seems I can't get any GPS signal. I guess it's because a GPS antenna is needed.
Do you have any news to report back on that issue? As the antenna already arrived from eBay?

    Thank you!

PS: this forum thread is awesome. I had already solved some problems with my acer :) keep going ;)

    i got a 3810tg about a month ago now

used vista on it for about 3 weeks, used to get 8hours battery and it ran fine

got my upgrade pack from acer for windows 7

had a few probels to begin with but updating the bios has sorted it out

the battery life has defo decrease in windows 7 though, getting just under 6 hours now and thats on power saving mode

also i had problems with the sound card, my music play back was skipping every 30secs or so, so i unistalled the realtek drivers and used the windows 7 sound drivers, the problems stopped now

ive played a few games on it, fifa2010, pes2010 and call of duty modern warfare 2 and theyve all ran fine on it, most of them on highest settings too

ive used the laptop as a music production pc too, using cubase 5 and it runs perfect, keeps very quiet and never over heats
