Hi, I bought and a 9600M GT GDDR3 512 (c1). for 5920G (thanks for the recommendation and the fantastic Bios unlocked)
Anyone know difference in millimeters memories and vga chipset, a 8600GS to a 9600mgt to make good contact?
I guess to make good contact will I need something like this right?
if anyone would know what would appreciate and thickness measurements.

really fascinating work that make you .. is an honor for a Spanish learning in a forum like this.

ok im back from the test's...now you give me the fix
i spent 6 hours to trick the driver to turn on the internal display...
at least i was succefull without the fix
5400 3dmarks at stock clokcs,6162 3dmarks with oc
i am satisfied hehe allmost double the score compared to the 8600m gt
now i need to take apart the stupid thing again and make new cooper cooling fins to solder on the gpu heat pipe.temperatures over 90c...still the stupid fan control wont kick in...if you could sort that out in the 9920 sbios it would be great!!!!
fan was running at 50% and the gpu was 94c...i can't belive the stupidity that they would only lock the fan speed to cpu thermal sensors... -
Hi
christian0087 - Are video out HDMI and SVideo working now
with 9600m gt ddr3 512 in 5920g ?
Thank you for answer
Nice day everyone -
Hi all,
@.NetRoller 3D : to the risk of repeating myself, I cannot thank you enough for the great work you've done. I will be happy to test the bios you have prepared. However, I will not be home this weekend, so it will be on monday.... But what blackened87 seems to tell about its own 9920g makes me full of hope!
To answer your questions about my conf :
- I currently use driver nouveau for the testings (after gotten rid of the nvidia drivers, that seemed to give overheating and freezing issues). All the xorg.log files were then obtained with this driver installed. So as the display outputs for the three cases, then.
- For the SBIOS, I used the one you have put on the first post (guess it was the V2 version).
If you need extra information, logs, or stuff like this to ease your work (not only for my case, but maybe for further users), I will be happy to give them to you!
Many thanks, and have a good week end! -
@blackened87 : Yeah, definitely, that's a very annoying thing to handle... seems like the 9920g doesn't care at all about the GPU Core temp, and that it only relies to the CPU probe to handle its fan speed... IS there really a way to fix this issue by BIOS modding? Not sure...
Considering this, I remember I tried to change the CPU temp thresholds on the bios, and it seems to have no effect : no matter If I put 47°C, 41°C, or 1 million °C (default setup is 55°C), little 9920g doesn't seem to care, and always blows away hot air when the CPU core reaches about 55°C... If this could help...
For my case, my bet about this was that I run ubuntu instead of Windows, and I read somethere that ACPI matters were programmed considering you will use only the latter... that's why I wonder what is the OS you're running on your laptop... If it's windows, it means that it doesn't rely on the OS, provided, we seem to suffer for the same heating syndrom...
Nice week end to all!
PS : By the way, I cannot but be agree with you : T9300 on this laptop rolls!! -
@blackened87: Can you post the original 8600M GT's VBIOS? I need to find the I2C port the 8600M GT is transmitting temperature information on.
-
@.NetRolller 3D (I just figured out the three "L"... héhé)
Here goes the 9920g 8600m gt Vbios : request download ticket | 8600MGT.rom - ifile.it -
@blackened87: As a Windows user, you may want to try NHC.
(Unfortunately AFAIK there is no NHC for Linux.)
@Hycks: Does the fan correctly react to the 8600M GT's temperature with the VBIOS you posted? -
I have not recieved the vga, I tell you when it arrives -
@netrolller: with the 8600gt the temperatures are the same.
i did a massive overclock and the sistem allways turned off because of gpu overheat, the fan never kick's in unless the cpu is heating up....
tomorow i will start the work on a new heatsink for the 9920,and am also thinking of soldering one cooper plate to tie the cpu and gpu heatsinks together so they can share the heat
i have a lot of work but i think i will be finished by monday-will post pictures for the mod.
@hycks: i am using windows 7 ultimate x64 -
@.NetRolller : No, unfortunately... the 8600 sometimes reaches almost 70 degrees without even a fan turn... I have to wait the CPU to reach 55 degrees before hearing the fan starting (at 50%).
@blackened : Hum... seems like the OS lead is not the one... Have also you noticed a CPU temperature threshold for the CPu to start?
Héhé, I'm a bit lazy, so I think I will keep the 8600m gt heatspreader.. but I wish you well for your project (it will be beautiful, I 'm sure!) -
well i am finished with my cooling
later today-tonight i will post the pictures.
the thing i was worried is that the stock cooling did not cool the memory modules at all!
you could burn your self if you tried to touch them!
it may be that on factory clock's that isn't an issue...
now the card keeps idle on 50-55c on benchmark 95-6c.but it cools the whole card.you can touch the heatsink now
and the liquid metal is not set yet-you will se what i mean by that later on the pictures.
i also tied the cpu and gpu heat-pipe together so the cpu now shares the heat generated by the gpu and forces the fan to turn on
so that issue is solved.
any way it is an increase in performance because frame rate droped rapidly earlier cuz the memory got too hot.now it keeps the frames up in test but i cannot force it yet for another 24 hours for the material to set nicely. -
Last news...
I just tried to install the last .NetRolller's bios... and right after this, at the next boot try, my 9920g starts on a black (but lightened) screen without even posting... seemed like the card was bricked... and no way to boot on the usb key or something, everything was blocked
I was very disappointed, and about to give immediate feedback of total failure, but I decided to make a last test plugging my external screen before booting, and, miracle, acer post appears. So I quickly put my usb key, rebooted, and flashed the next to last bios netrolled has made... after that, it turns back to the former state (phheeeeewwww!!!! that was close!). I tried to flash one more time with the "faulty" bios, to make sure it was not a bad flash the first time, and the same syndroms appeared again...
So, to sum up, I have avoided a big crash, but the driver loading issue hasn't been solved yet... and I will borrow the external screen a little longer, just in case! In any case, don't try the last netrolller vbios at home!!!! (héhé)
So, Mr Netrolller, could you please help me a little more? I can give more informations, if you want. I'm sure we will gonna make it soon! Thank you very much.
@blackened : Great job with your soldering matters! By the way, how have you managed to "trick" the drivers, in order to force them to display things correctly? -
@hycks: everithing is fine at my end.picture is normal gaming movies all of it.
i installed a modified nvidia driver and then the screen went crazy.all kinds of purple 2 screens in one.i tried others but no luck black screen.
then i instaled the puprle one and navigated on that purple multiple screen and manually updated to the newest nvidia driver from device manager.and would you look at that everithing is normal...
i also tried the same thing connected to an external display but ended with black screen after update.
i don't understand why it works when you update it with the purple internal display, probably has something to do with display detection during instalation...
the last nvidia drivers are whql without the modified inf...
the weird thing is that now the nvidia control panel doesent work but i don't care much because everithing else work's fine
don't know the correct version of the purple deformed image driver i instaled but i know i downloaded it from laptopvideo2go.
but again i am using windows
dunno about linux. -
@blackened : Thanks for the feedback! Do you use the next to last version of Vbios provided by Netrolller or the very last one ("improved... etc etc")? And everything worked well immediately? For me, again, with the latter, It freezes at the very start, so in my case, it doesn't matter if windows or linux is installed on my PC...
When I turn back to my old 8600m gt, everything is fine (display OK on the internal screen), so as when I put an external screen plugged with my 9600m gt before power up, so it can't be an hardware failure... I guess it has to rely of what Netrolller has changed about mxm structures in the Vbios, because it has only affected the communication between the PC and the internal display... Maybe a closer look to the 8600m gt vbios should help (I wish I have enough knowledge to help Netrolller to do this!)... But I haven't, so I eagerly wait for the next try (héhé)!
So, to sum up, the next to last Vbios works fine with Windows 7 ultimate, but not with linux, for the time being... Correct me if I'm wrong, of course (héhé)! -
Hi all,
After a whole evening of drivers changes, issues fixes(without wanting it, I have improved my knowledge abou linux configurations... But that's enough for now! héhé), things haven't changed so much.
What I have done :
- Tried each kind of drivers proposed for the 9600m GT (namely, vesa, nv, nouveau and nvidia). I even tried to install the nvidia driver from scratch, and, doing so, I almost messed up my whole ubuntu installation.
- Tried to run a fresh ubuntu session from the live CD, that didn't give any result (except to turn off my wifi card, I really don't know why! héhé)
Nothing really worked, at the unique exception of the vesa driver, that displayed one time correctly on the internal screen the login prompt (while not in the correct resolution... I wasn't able to reproduce this more than this unique success, and anyway, it is not an viable solution (for each change on the kernel, I would have to rely on an external screen to reactivate vesa... plus, that driver is out of date, and I may need some graphical specs that nouveau drivers offers and not vesa)..
But, this means that the vbios Netrolller proposed took the right direction, and it's "only" a matter of making a small modification on this vbios to display things correctly without relying on an driver tweak, or external screen... what I really don't understand is that, at the meantime, with the same drivers installed, the 8600m gt works like a charm... my bet is that the key lies in the Vbios of this card, but I can't say more because I don't know how to examine this... by the way, .Netrolller, is there a tutorial of how examine this point precisely in Vbios, so that I may learn how to do this? thanks!
By the way, Netrolller, if you still want to work on this vbios of course, I have kept a wide variety on xorg.log corresponding to many driver configurations I have tested... so feel free to ask!
Blackened, we are waiting for your beautiful pictures about the depths of your 9920g! héhé
Have a nice day, all, and thank you for any help you could provide me!*
PS : By the way, Netrolller, the former xorg.log I gave you one week ago were created using nvdia drivers, not the nouveau drivers, as I have claimed at that time... -
hi all
i was a bit lazy for picture uploads, sorry about that
so lets go step by step:
1:the factory cooling and the modified cooling inside the 9920:
you can clearly see the difference
2:a closer look at the factory non-efficient cooling heat plate compared to my diy version:
3:here you can see what i have done
mainly i desoldred the tiny cooper plate that transfered the heat from the gpu to the heatpipe.
then i mounted the heatpipe on the new plate using 2-component liquid metal...don't ask!!!!
once that was set i made a plaster mold-not in the pictures...then i tied the gpu and cpu heatpipes together using the same metal compound...this way the heat the gpu is emiting is transmited to the cpu heatpipe and sharing the heat
now the fan is forced to turn cuz its getting hot alongside the graphics card
so take a look at what i have done and give your feedback everyone
i personaly think i did a good job -
and the result in 3dmark06
sorry for the bad picture quality...taken with phone...
ouh yeh and look at those clocks on the 9600m gt....acer eat your heart out!
so the cooling does the work
now that the compound is set during benchmark the gpu temp does not go over 86c and in idle it keeps a cool 54-56
also that is all possible now that the stupid fan is kicking in when it should -
Hi all,
@blackened : Nice job! You bet it's efficient... heat should not be a problem anymore for you! Was it hard to do regarding as cutting the copper pièce... I couldn't do this personnaly, because I don't have the appropriate stuff to do so.... So I have to cope with the factory (and rather inefficient, I'm agree!) heatspreader! But, before that, I have to make ubuntu boot with the card, that is not easy, I tell you!
As far as I'm concerned, I can't use Windows on this PC for the time being (I have some programs for my job that works only on linux, that's why I absolutely need ubuntu to boot...). But I think you should describe a little bit more precisely how you've managed to install the appropriate drivers for windows, for the edification of future 9920g owners! héhé
Again, congrats for your great job, and for the great timings! And wish me luck for my own "fight", I will need it! héhé
@NetRolller : In order to understand better what you've made, I tried to read the two Vbios you've given me with a Hex editor, found tiny differences, but I can't interpret them, so it's useless... So I turn back to the drivers examinations , but nothing seems to work... Waiting for a new Vbios release (again, if you have time and will to bend over this problem again). Thank you for what you've already made, and for any help you could give me about the linux case! -
@hycks:
well it is a lot of work...a lot of cutting and final fabrication is involved....
then comes the part when you need to join the pieces and the plaster molds do take a lot of your time to make...
its a one day job-a full day...regarding if you have the tools to do the job.
but belive me when i tell you it is worth it!!!!
with the factory cooling i was having trouble on stock clocks..
on benchmark the temp of the gpu was at times at 102-3c because the fan was idle...
not to mention the memory modules-i think it was luck the they didn't burn out regarding the heat...when i licked my finger and touched the heatsink over the memory it was sizling-i don't know the right term-please correct me -
Hi, I have been reading these posts for a while and can see finally that the 9920 8600m gt Graphics Card failure problem is finally going to be solved.
I have this beast of a machine running T7800 2.6ghz processor and have fitted the 9600m gt ddr3 mxm II card, when old card failed.....
So my Question is which SBIOS and which VBIOS do I need to get my beastie back up ? (currently runs on seperate monitor ok)
Congrats on all the work that Net roller and other members have done in resolving this issue, but it makes you wonder why Acer or Nvidia didnt solve the problem, or is it fit and forget.....?
cheers Nikki -
@nikki
well since i am the only one having a fully functional 9920 with the 9600m gt i will guide you in what i did
first you need to install netroller's modified sbios-you can find the link for download on page 1 of this thread.
then you install the next to last(not the last) vbios mod netroller did.maybe 3-4 pages prior to this one.
now your acer will boot normaly with the 9600m gt.
at the moment you will not be able to install any drivers.
you need to download the driver with the modified inf files in order to do so.
go to laptopvideo2go.com and download 259.47 version of the driver
you also need to download the latest nvidia drivers go to nvidia.com to do so.after download run the latest drivers just so they can decompress on your hard drive. the usually go to c:\nvidia...the installer will then exit with a prompt that you don't have a compatible graphics card...
run the instalation of the modified driver and restart the laptop-mind you that you need to do this step with the internal screen!!!
after bootup your screen will be all messed up!don't panic! in my case the picture was double and purple!!!-also stay with the internal screen(when i tried the same thing with the external screen it didn't work...
the screen is all messed up but you can still navigate through it with a little effort...
go to device manager and find your graphics card-now from there do a step by step driver update by foot.find the latest nvidia driver you have prepared earlier and locate the required inf file.select your card from the list and update.
click allow on the prompt's by windows....and would you look at that your screen turns normal without restart required
and everithing works just fine!
ouh and this is all done in windows 7-i don't know if other version's of windows will respond the same and it will have the same result...but it works you can see for your self on the pictures i posted earlier -
hiya ,thanks, did you use a usb drive to flash? do I need to remove the graphic card to do this?, running 32bit Windows Vista on the beastie
thanks Nikki -
@nikki yes i did the sbios flash with the usb drive.the vbios i did from windows with nvflash.
i don't know if vista will have the same result as win7.it is possible.
you can try and if my method doesent work reinstal win7
good luck if you need any other info i will be here -
hi downloaded the 259.47 driver and separate info file from laptopvideo2go
downloaded latest driver 296.10 verde from nvidia
Nikki
@blackened..
I like your cooling set up , where did you get the plate from that you`ve used for the gpu?(what was it before you modded it) -
@nikki:
it was the botom plate of a gigabyte oc motherboard with a fried chip set.
it was a high class motherboard so the botom was 40% covered with a big heatplate.so it was perfect for my mod
i am a computer tehnician so i have lots and lots of this thins arround the shop...
but it was worth iti dare you to beat my clocks!!! same as the 9700 gt lol...
how did your update pass? -
@ blackened
havent done it yet , figuring how to make bootable usb to flash bios, last time I just used winplash in windows lol
I,ve made the usb using hp tool and added the dos files , now I have to add a flashing program and the bios I downloaded...i,m not a computer wiz lol -
Hi All,
respect for your work here! Maybe you can help me my problem too! I have a Travelmate 5720 with the most up to date bios (1.35). Originally this notebook sported an X2500 card. I wanted to replace it with a Firegl V5700. It should work with it, but it doesn't.
Can .NetRoller3D's solution solve my problem? I see there is an "experimental" bios mod issued. Should I use that or the solution is somewhere else for me?
Thanks for your help in advance! -
@NetRoller3D!
Hey - ty very much for your Modded Insyide Bios for "Aspire 5720(Z)G, 7720(Z)G "
I´m running this on my Emachines E510 - it works great, but there are some problems.
The Menues in my Bios are now all unlocked - but when i change, maybe the RAM Timings or other things - in the bios it works - but when i start my windows and check the new setings with cpu-z or other tools - there is no change..
maybe u can fix it? btw. there is a newer VBios version for x3100 intel - lemme know when u want dat vbios to integrate it in your new version of the bios
ps: VERY GOOD JOB!
btw: can u change the GPUclock from the x3100 via vbios? when yes lemme know pls! or does anybody have the Intel BMP utility for editing VBIOS??? -
Unfortunately, the RAM timings menu appears to be a complete dummy, it actually uses DDR1-specific clocks and timings.
As for the X3100 issues, I don't know - I primarily made the BIOS for MXM machines, not integrated ones. But I'll see what I can do. -
Hi thanks for all your work on this. I have a 7720 with x3100 and the latest build of yours caused some bsod's with win7 and vista. Related to the video drivers as best I could tell. So I am looking forward to your updated x3100 version. The acer version has always had problems anyway. And thanks for fixing the dsdt portion of yours too.
Thanks,
Don -
I'm happy with this bios and the GRAPHICS CARD.
5 stars for developers.
I have the latest drivers from nvidia, you suggest I use another version in particular? -
@don h: Do not ever mention the H word on this forum. Discussion of running Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware is strictly prohibited.
-
Hey .NetRoller3D, i'm kinda new in this forum even though i've been checking it for some months now.. Whenever i have issues with my laptops i seem to find the solution for it right here ^^ So im gonna give it a go and see what can be done in my newest (frustrating) case.
I'm a proud owner of an Acer 8930G laptop, love the pc but after my graphics card 'blew up' (9600GT DDR3) i've been having lots of headaches trying to figure out what i could do to fix it and reached the conclusion that the GPU had no solution. I started looking at MXMII GPU's that could fit this laptop and found some information (misleading?) that the Quadro FX770M would work 100% garanteed (its basically the "same" card as the 9600GT so i didnt really think otherwise).
Anyway, most of the time i spend on the pc is dedicated to image/video rendering and not games so... it seemed like the best investment i could make. I then bought it online, got it this week and... well... The pc boots, LCD turns on but no image shows in it.I then tried to use an external monitor and conected the VGA cable, image appears and everything seems to work as intended. (just as you described in your initial post)
I have no idea what i can do to fix this... BIOS change? BIOS mod? Forget this card, sell it and get another 9600GT? (argh) I dont really know much when it comes down to dealing with that sort of stuff but i have someone at home that does, just have to lead him to the right place cuz he has doubts aswell.Little help would be much apreciated
cheers everyone -
What VBIOS version do you have?
(The one ending in 7A.01.06 tends to be the best, compatibility-wise.)
Also, check for a disconnected LCD cable. -
Thanks for the reply
Downloaded GPU-Z, this is what i got.
I'm gonna open the pc up to see if i can find any issue on the LCD in the meanwhile.
*EDIT* By the way, i used to be able to see both CPU and GPU temps on HWMonitor back when i had the 9600GT, now the gpu doesnt appear on it and cpu temps are frozen/random. >_>
*EDIT2* It seems like the pc is strugling with several drivers, specially the most recent ones, as soon as i enter windows 7 it takes a couple of mins until the image on the external screen disappears, LCD on the laptop blinks once or twice and then the pc restarts. Found an old driver that is somewhat stable 178.26 (doesnt crash the machine.. which is a start...) -
Flash to 62.94.7A.01.06.
Note that your card is currently overclocked - the correct clocks would be 500/800/1250. This may easily be the reason why you are crashing. -
@.NetRolller 3D :
i wonder if you can give me a tips on that problem i'm having with my 9600M GT 512Mb DDR3
here is the explanation.. : CLICK HERE
thank's in advance.

@.NetRolller 3D
Hi, I have tried all the vga bios found on techpowerup.com (9600M GT DDR2, 9650M GT DDR2) for my new 9600M GS DDR2 installed in 8920G with your modded sbios but with no luck.
Do you have any advice regarding my issue? Any other vga bios maybe?
Thanks -
Hi all,
Here's the last news for my 9600m gt installation attempt (target codename: 9920g! héhé)... After hours of manipulations, I have now access to the ubuntu system while making "the nomodeset" trick like this link describes for example : nvidia - Strange resolution on Ubuntu 11.10 - Ask Ubuntu - Stack Exchange.
Still, the display is not correct (VESA driver is used, and is out of date...), and I still also have the non EDID detection by the driver (I obtained the same kind of xorg.log that I have posted earlier)... I would love to solve this issue once and for all! héhé.
@Netrolller : have you got time to look for a new Vbios change? I think we are close to the solution, that should lie in the original 8600m gt Vbios confguration : what do you think about it? Could you please also explain me more in details why the nouveau driver seems to ignore the EDID information while the 9600m gt (when everything is perfect when I turn back to the 8600m gt...). I really can't get it! Thanks a lot.
EDIT : I also tried the V3_Beta SBios you've made for the jimmyjimmy "case", without any success, unfortunately...
Thanks for any help, and good luck to your own work! -
i have in mi card original vbios acer, i can upload, the card is a 9600m gt ddr3 512mb.
here you have, i upload to mi dropbox:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/59199987/G96 M.bin
EDIT:running in 5920G -
Can you extract it as a .ROM file ?
i noticed that your bios extracted with GPU Z is 512 byte bigger than mine. -
-
@Hycks: Install kernel sources & necessary compiler tools.
Then, edit drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau/nouveau_bios.c, and delete the line "if (conf & 0x2)".
Then, recompile the nouveau module.
This should allow nouveau to pick up the EDID. (This is not the "right" fix; ACPI EDID should be used depending on the relevant MXM structure field. I've suggested that to nouveau's developers, but they won't fix it because "this (i.e. the current behavior) is what the nvidia proprietary driver does" and "we do not support or condone aftermarket MXM upgrades".) -
.NetRoller 3D, i've downloaded the 62.94.7A.01.06 bios + a backup from this one and NVFlash 5.95.0.1.
Flashing a GPU is a procedure that i've never done before and it seems my brother isnt really into it either (even though he's done it, he doesnt wanna mess up) ... We were wondering if you(or anyone) could point us to any page/guide out there explaining what are the parameters needed to flash this thing. >_>
Many thanks in advance... -
@NetRolller : Thank you for your answer. But I must admit that I have never recompiled a kernel source or module... I know how to compile programs and even how to write them, but using ubuntu and linux is very new for me...
So, could you indicate me the main steps of how to proceed in this driver mod? I tried to read tutorials on the web, but things are not so clear. Here is the ubuntu version I use : 3.0.0-17-generic... Sorry for asking you things like this, but this would really help me....
By the way, is it just the very line "if (conf & 0x2)" I have to comment? So I should letthe following line "entry->lvdsconf.use_acpi_for_edid = true;" uncommented, right?
Many, many thanks for the help, and sorry again for my "noobiness", but I am really want to learn and help others for future cases... To think perhaps I'm only one step away for using again my 9920g makes me eager to make this attempt soon! héhé -
@Hycks: Only the "if" line needs to be commented out.
Unfortunately, you are using Ubuntu, a distribution that actively discourages using self-compiled kernels or modules. The kernel sources are packaged only to conform the GPL; Ubuntu actually takes steps to prevent you from compiling those sources. The usual response to kernel compile questions on the official Ubuntu forums is "Don't compile anything, use only prepackaged binaries".
With that said, try asking someone with more experience dealing with Ubuntu - I've abandoned it in favor of OpenSUSE precisely due to the aforementioned "Use precompiled binaries" attitude, which is IMO runs counter to the spirit of F/LOSS.
A tutorial that may help can be found @ How to compile a new Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric) kernel - this actually rebuilds the whole kernel, as apparently Ubuntu doesn't allow compiling modules for kernels that you didn't compile yourself. -
NetRoller, just did the flash to the 62.94.7A.01.06 bios. Didnt resolve the issues though...
Any other ideas? I'm guessing this card just wasnt made for this Acer. (still, doesnt make sense) Lucky me.
PS: i have the 1.21 Acer bios. Suppose its the newest one around? -
Check if there is newer SBIOS available, and update as needed.
-
I'm presuming that doing a SBIOS rollback wouldnt solve anything either. *sigh*
