This isn't exactly an acer problem but i'm pretty certain if the knowledge is on this forums i'll find it here!

I have an FX 3700M, having some throttling issues with it but after forcing the performance lvls down to 1 i can get high clocks, currently at 600 core 1550 shader stable.

However the problem is the memory, whatever i do i can't get more then 450mhz while the stock specs are 800mhz and the chips themselfs are rated at 833mhz (1.2ns).

Is there some kind of memory voltage options to be found in the Nvidia mxm biosses? Or maybe timings or something simular?

This really kills the carsd performance.

    sm2 3700
    sm3 3400

while it should be 5kish both

    Hi everybody,

I've been reading through both this post and the owners lounge for the past couple of days now and I've found some brilliant info regarding upgrading my 8930g, so thanks to everyone for that! :D

Unfortunately, I'm still a little confused as to the best gpu upgrade option for me, I currently have an nVidia 9600m gt with 1GB DDR2, I know I can OC it a bit, but would rather get a DDR3 card if possible, so my question is, out of all the cards listed here and elsewhere for the 8930g which is the best one to opt for? Should I stick with nvidia and go for the 9700 512mb or an ATI 4650 / 4850 or is there another suitable card outthere that I've missed?

Sorry for the repeat post, but well, I was/am at wits end on what to choose...

Thanks in advance for the help!

9700 with DDR3 if you can find it, otherwise 4650 DDR2 or 9600M GT DDR3(there has been an MXM 2.1 GT240M that people have found which would be the fastest).

On the german acer forums there is someone who tried an FX 3700M in an acer 8930g and it worked!

Offcourse it's hot and not perfect since there is no HE tab available in your acer and it runs really hot.

A 9800M GS might be a good option (if you can find one).

    64 shaders , ddr3 and 256bits memory makes this card 2x as fast as a 9600M GS ddr2

Thanks Meaker & Fragzero, I'll have a look around for those cards so and see what I come up with :) I had seen a 9600gt ddr3 but can't find it now... ah well (it was cheap too!)

Again thanks for the quick replies, much appreciated!

Thanks FragZero, found a couple of 240's here but they're for an Asus c90s. The card is listed as a suitable mxm type so I might try it, gonna look around a bit more first though :D

I'll have a look at the link you posted as well, most likely when I get home, need to translate it :)

C90s cards usually work well in Acers. According to the seller, this one was tested with a 5520G and a 5920G - two notoriously picky machines. So, it will probably work in a 8930G (especially since the 8930G has an Insyde "BIOS" - really an EFI -, and Insyde is known to be more competent MXM-wise than Phoenix).

    OMG :D

I had suggested this so many times. Makes me very happy to see this working!! :)
Also check out the fx 2700m its the lowest power consumption type III card. but with a 256 bit memory bus.

I have 2 9800m GS which are a little better, maybe an 8800m GTS which is perfect. I will list them in the marketplace soon.

I don't have any of those.

I would have some 3600m. Which are even better.
64 shaders like 9800m GS and only 50w.

I finally got the time to do the swap; 8935G with the 6770m gets thru POST. I've downloaded and extracted the latest driver. From Device Manager I attempt to change the standard VGA-driver and point the file browser to the directory with the ATI/AMD-driver, win7 loads the driver, black screen, but then it BSODs with a memory error.

What am I doing wrong? any hints?

As long as you did a direct download of the drivers it should install normally without any forced installs.

Its just the download checker that checks if you card is supported that's broken.

If I disable the Intel graphics card in Device Manager, then I am able to load the 6700M driver. The card isn't recognized as a 6770m, I cannot get full resolutions and Catalyst reports that no ATI/AMD compatible graphics card is installed. I cannot power on via the right power saver button.

    Advice? Anyone?

Ah I forgot it was integrated + dedicated.

You might have to go dedicated only.

Unless you can somehow merge the latest acer driver with the latest AMD one.

I do know ATI are coming out with their new shared optimus style program, would be interesting to see if it needs new hardware or will work on existing platforms with 6 series GPUs.

After many hours of reading this thread

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/387819-acer-8935g-using-wrong-display-adapter-18.html

    and this thread

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...-acer-x920g-vs-geforce-9600m-gt-issue-18.html

I now believe that my HD6770M is either:
    1) defective or
    2) the 8935G is not compatible due to "a BIOS MXM structure error" similar to the problem described in the second thread I link to above.

I am able to power up the laptop with via the power button, which enables the Intel GMA. I am able to install the driver for the HD6700-series, but get a BSOD as soon as the driver installs. Upon reboot, the laptop BSODs with "machine system exception" or similar. I am able to boot into "Safe Mode" where I can disable the HD6700 in "Device Manager" and subsequent reboots do not BSOD. However, as soon as the HD6700 is re-enabled in "Device Manager" the BSOD reappears.

If I power up the laptop using the "full speed power button" to the left of the "Hold"-button on the mediacontroller-touchpad, I get no display on the LCD. I do get 100% correst POST-messages on the VGA, and a few character errors in the POST text of the NIC boot msgs when using HDMI.
When Win7 loads and the laptop is connected to a screen via HDMI, the standard colours are off; there seems to be missing the red colour in the picture. There is tearing and areas of the screen which are not updated.

When trying to change desktop resolution, the screen becomes black. When unplugging the HDMI-cable, the Windows sound for unplugging is heard. Replugging the HDMI-cable reenables the output.

When starting 3Dmark06 the screen first flickers, then becomes black. Un-and re-plugging the HDMI-cable produces a picture again and 3Dmark06 reports a Direct3D-error or an error that the display has been lost.

I have tried several Win7 installations from HDD/SSD.

Then I swap the HD677M-card with the old HD4670M, everything works fine.

I believe the HD6770M card is defective, but am unable to test the HD6770M in another laptop as I have no other laptop with MXM-A; my old C90s has MXM-II.

What's the verdict from ppl? Is the HD6770M defective, or is it a case of incompatibility between the HD6770M and my 8935G? I am inclined to believe the former is the case, but I ask your advice.

I bought the HD6770M from AliExpress supplier GANG YAO; anyone know how/if RMA can be handled by Gang Yao? http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/...4/del-M14x-HD6770M-1G-DDR5-MXM3-VGA-card.html

I would send it back saying you have a defective one.

If installing the drivers causes a BSOD then I think it's likely.

I take it you have no graphics options in the bios? Such as use dedicated only. I know my 5935g did.

My only concern is that with a GTS250 in switching mode would BSOD in AHCI mode (not IDE) but work fine in dedicated mode.

That seller was touting his del M15x Quadro 4000M 2G DDR5 MXM3 VGA card. Then I looked at the pricetag US $2,105.25 - 2,157.89, quietly walked away.

I don't know why you would say something like that without explaining what you mean, because you just made an incredibly vague and cryptic post.

If you're implying that the seller is dishonest, then sure OK but I'd like you to be more specific.
    Quadro cards are expensive.

If you want to find a 470m I might be able to find the secrets you are looking for and get a much lower price, but that is equally ambitious.

I was saying that the seller is legitimate and he has REALLY high end stuff.

Offtopic: MEAKER, what do you think of the dual AMD gpus with A8 processors with GPU on the same die. With an addition of another discrete GPU, say 6770M, on top of the new AMD A4,A6,A8 processor series, it will increase the performance by a great margin. I cant wait. Btw thats what AMD says.

No point in adding a 6770 since running the 6770 by itself will be smoother.

The included graphics cores number 400, so I expect a pairing of a 6550 or similar. That combined with some high speed DDR3 (1833 kingston modules anyone?) Should be able to match my card in gaming.

CPU is still going to be a bit slower though.

Benefits should be cost and power consumption. I think my card will hold out at higher resolutions due to bandwidth.

    heya!

    i've got a problem/question.

in the first post is this written:

    Aspire 7720G - MXM-II, 8400M GS, 9300M G, 9300M GS, 9500M GS, Upgrade to 9600M GT, Upgrade to 9650M GT, Upgrade to HD 3470 (7720ZG)

    in the second:

    MXM-I
    GeForce 9300M G 256MB DDR2 (NB9M-GE1)

my problem is now, i've got a Aspire 7720 with a 9300M G, i would say it is a MXM I because of the size.
I thought its a MXM II so i bought a Nvidia GT8600 512MB to change it.

when i change the mxm cards with each other i only have a black screen with the GT8600. Is there a chance to make it run on my Aspire 7720? ;)
i aready have the newest bios, if it matters. ;)

i'm sorry for my english... but i hope u understand what i mean. :p

after 2 days the sent back the card and said its ok.

i've also got a 3 months warranty. but i dont have another notebook where i can check the card.

I have some 9600m GT which would probably be much better for you at a lower price.
You should return that card anyway. When people say its a standard MXM card they really don't know enough about Acers to be selling ;)

doesnt matter if a 9600gt is better... everything is better than the 9300M G. ;)

my problem is it doesnt work. ;)

    is the 9300M G a MXMI Card?

is it possible to make a MXMII run in my Aspire 7720?
i always thought the mainboard should be the same in all types of the 7720... so actually it should work. -.-

so i tried my nvidia gt240
it showed Bios output and windows loading screen,

by the time i was writing password the screen went black, and the gfx card got really really hot, so hot that i turned off the laptop as fast as possible, and the card smoked a little, dont know if its still working,
but it could boot with it, i dont know if it was a card error or what it was,

The ram on the card was so hot i could not touch them

edit... forget anything above, its working
it needs a shim but right now i am using a soft pad, seems to be working, it was a bit hard to find the driver but i found it now,

yes that is the one i bought, i contacted the seller and he said i needed a cobber shim, and he would send me one for free,

the seller said idle it should be around 55 degrees and max out at 80 degrees

he said i should not do any 3d hard work untill i recive my shim

right not idle its about 45 degrees and not doing anything

it gets hot to fast because i use a soft pad

i have a 9650m GT in my acer 5920g and it was hot too i got always fps lagg but i useing copper shim too and everything fine now. i think because these cards made with better technology = smaller chip and there is a gap between the chip and the default heatsink and thats why need cooper shim. i think!

@PatQP @Giovanz: Electrically, 7720G = 7720ZG = 5720G = 5720ZG. So, anything that works in either of these shall work in all of these.
I can also confirm that the 8600M GT does work (checked in a 5720ZG); though mine has an Asus VBIOS.
One thing you may want to try is the MXM-patched BIOS in the "Possible fix" topic - my 8600M GT didn't need it, but yours may.

@raserdk: That is good news! Can you extract and post the VBIOS?

Is GTS 250 still the best nVidia card you can get?
