In Post Number 1 there are two links to successfull upgrades (5920G to HD 4650), but the links do not point to a valid thread. Can anyone provide me perhaps with the correct links? Searching did not help, unfortunately.

    Thanks a lot!

What do you want to know? HD4650 is Toshiba GPU, comes without vBIOS chip, you have to either solder one, or integrate it into the system BIOS and then flash it to your system. I found my old test BIOS with integrated 4650 vBIOS, so here you are: http://www.mediafire.com/download/5es6qvu85115c5k/ZD13814.WPH The usual warning - I'm not responsible for whatever happens with you or your laptop. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for your reply. I purchased an ATI radeon mobility HD4650 (VG.M9606.005 -> should be an "Acer-Bios"-Card, shouldn't it?) and wanted to collect further information of what to pay attention to when installing in my 5920G.
According to what I have read in this forum so far I thought that the card is more or less plug-and-play. I am aware of the fact that the copper plate has to be installed additionally and that the voltage should be lowered to 1,0V.

edit: This is a great forum by the way, thanks for the helpful information!

Sorry, I forgot about the Acer version. It is indeed PnP, but it is DDR2, so it was the go-to upgrade when it first came out, but most people were searching and found more powerful alternatives afterwards. Anyway, I don't think that you'll have issues even if you run it stock voltage. If you see high temps (more than 85ºC) feel free to undervolt, but take in mind that it would limit your overclock ability if any. Good luck!

What would me "more powerful alternatives"? Just out of curiosity.
Overclocking is not my aim, so that I will try to stay at stock settings and maybe lower the voltage if high temperatures occur, just as you wrote.

MSi HD 4670 512MB GDDR3, Toshiba GT 330m 1GB DDR3, ASUS GT 240m 1GB DDR3, Toshiba HD 4650 1GB DDR3, Toshiba GT 230m and around here should be yours. BUT these GPUs were nice and there was some performance difference a few years ago. Playing recent games, if you even manage to do that, wont give you much difference to justify the research, not to mention the money involved. If you just want a picture on the display, enjoy your new GPU.

    Just as an information:
    The graphicscard-swap went flawlessly, but:
    - the original screws from the 8600M GT were about 2mm too short. Luckily a nearby computer store had 4 screws that fitted.

I installed a 0,8mm copper shim and the idle temperatures are about 50°C. A GPU-stresstest (furmark) resulted between 90°C and 93°C after 10 minutes of stressing. According to triturbo's post that is too much, so I will test a 1,0mm copper shim and/or undervolting to 1,0V.

Well I for one avoid FurMark, it's not really realistic. Try with something that you'll actually use - game or a program. Anyway, since you've already done it, 93ºC after 10 minutes is not that bad.

I just used furmark to make a quick stress test in order to get an idea of the quality (especially related to cooling) of my mod ;-)

After playing half an hour NFS THE RUN the max temperature was 88 degrees celsius, so that I think I am - for now - going to leave the system as it is.

    Once again: Thanks!

Hi! I have an Acer 5920G. The old 9500GS card is broken and I didn't turn on the laptop in the past 3 years... A few days ago I bought an ATI HD4670 1GB DDR3 from Toshiba l555 series. Without graphics card the laptop boot normally, I can hear the windows sound, and the screen goes white. With graphic card I can't get video signal on LCD nor external monitor... the screen is black. I tried to flash bios with 5920G_MXM_V3.wph using CRISDISK but the power lights keep flashing and nothing happened (it's not reading USB stick, I tried with two different 2GB sticks FAT formatted) Where I'm wrong?
    Any advice could be helpful.
    Thanks!

You do need special system BIOS, but it's not the MXM version. I've provided link to it on the previous page - it is has integrated vBIOS of Toshiba HD4650 since this GPU doesn't has vBIOS chip.

Thank you! Unfortunately my Acer refuse to flash Bios... I put your file in the CRISDISK folder, renamed to BIOS then tried to flash it (pressing FN+ESC then Power) the power light start flashing and nothing happened. I let it about 10 min and when I press power button laptop shutdown. It still boot normally but still black screen and no signal. (I take off the Bios power supply by removing it's two power wires). I look with a flashlight to laptop display but nothing to see so I think the diode it's fine. (when no graphics card installed the screen goes white and I can see the diode lights up)
What else can I do? Please help me to revive my lappy...

If you can borrow a GPU from someone you can use WinPhlash. Other than that - desoldering and a programmer. As far as I know 5920G was hard to recover with Crisis disk or maybe even impossible. Check the MXM BIOS mod thread, at the beginning (maybe p.5 or 6) there was a user with bricked machine. I'm not very sure if he managed to bring it back to life (with Crisis recovery), it was pretty long time ago, but it might be helpful.

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread, but I have an old Aspire 5720G with a recently deceased 8400M GS (how it survived this long, no idea). I also have what I believe is a GTS 250M MXM-II (it might be a 240M though, since from what I remember and found an MXM-II 250M is pretty rare). Now, I don't think it's possible to just plug-and-play it to the 5720G, but is there a way to get it to work with the laptop? Thank you!

The GTS 250m is not standard MXM-II, so it wont fit straight away and quite possibly wont fit at all even with modifications. Search for GT 240m MXM-II (NOT MXM-A), that's the best you can get, although if you just need a picture and not performance there are other options as well.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not really sure if the I have here is a 250M, it might be a 240M. However, I'm almost sure it is MXM-II, so it might be a 240M. I'll try and see if it fits straight away when I get home, I'll report later to confirm. Also, I'll try to measure it and confirm if it's MXM-II.

    Hey there

I'm trying to get an ASUS GT240m 60-NW2VG1000-A0 working in a Acer 6930g. Mechanically it is perfect, but I think it may need a BIOS flash. I found this bios. https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/66820/acer-gt240m-1024-090730

But I'm kind of stuck with what do do. Any help appreciated.

    Hi there.

I hope you are still active on here.
I have bought the card you mention in the above post, the Asus GT240M and am trying to get it to work on a 6930g. Physically it's perfect, but the machine doesn't post. Do you have any insight on it?

It should work out of the box. If it doesn't, which seems to be the case, it's quite likely that the GPU is gone. Try updating the system BIOS.

Hello dear acer owners and MXM experts,

I own a Acer 5620ZG with a ATI 4650 1GB DDR2 that died recently, and I was browsing ebay trying to find another one to replace it and I found a used Nvidia GT240M MXMII 1GB DDR3 for about 50€ does anyone know if will it work? I already have NetRolller 3D bios (I had an 9600M before).
I can also buy another 4650 for about 80€, I was wondering if the 240M is a better card since its DDR3 or not?
I still use this laptop for browsing and more like as a media center and some light gaming when I'm not at home and I love it.

    Thanks in advance

It would run cooler and might give you slight performance bump. Go for it.

    I would say no.

It is a more slightly more powerful card. But it's feature set is lacking. More modern games will support the 4650 than the 240m

Thanks for pointing it out, I understand but I don't really game that much with this laptop and heaviest game I'll play here is Paladins which I believe still runs DirectX 9

I'm sorry if this is a duplicate, but I didn't see a way to search just this thread.

Is it possible to simply remove the MXM card from an Acer 8735G? Or replace it with something that won't broil my lap?

I don't care much about performance anymore, I'd rather the unit run cooler. Onboard GMA video would be fine, but I don't know if it'll automatically kick in by removing the MXM card, and I'd rather not take it out just to put it back in if it doesn't work.

forgot, also tested on 7720G 8920G 8930G 6920G and works with original bios
so i was curious as to why was that, and as you can see on the hardware id tab
the subsys is 01211025, this subsys ID is normally for 8600M, so my guess is that this card will
work for any acer laptop that originally suppported 8600M, but that is a guess and is not verified.

an exception to this is the 9920G that originally had 8600m but for some reason needs its own vbios

If You are talking about blue PCB cards from Toshiba I see two problems with what you are writing. First of all there aren't gts 250m made in MXM form, as I'm aware of, apart from Asus ones which isn't true MXM because of it shape. All those cards sold on aliexpress as gt250m are actually gt230m. Sellers even give chip markings: N10P-GE-A2 which is gt230m, gts250m have slighty different but very similar: N10E-GE-A2. Those cards don't have vbios chip on board. There's place for that chip in the left upper corner of the card. To make them work You have to either solder preflashed chip with some resistors or incorporate vbios into the bios of the laptop.

hi, yes i saw another thread here about how to incorporate vbios on the bios laptop, i think for a 330M
so i think it won't be very hard. but i did not even once think about googling N10P-GE-A2 to see if it was gts250m, well that is awkward. i think i need to have a little chat with them about it :p
thanks for the info, though. i would probably not have seen it until late.

hi, so i was trying the 5920G with a 3650m i got, and for some reason the fan does not spin,
everything is functional when tested with 8400, 8600m, 9500m but the moment i put the 3650m fan will not start even if the cpu goes 80c and gpu 90c, vbios is 010.088.000.005.028840. Even when i try acfancontrol i got wrong temperature readings it always shows gpu at 3c, bummer.
any help will be appreciated. :)

Thank you so much for this thread. Very helpful. I currently have the 9600M GS 521MB in my 8930G. Recently the Mobo and GPU both gave up the ghost. I found a replacement mobo for a decent price and ordered it. My question is:

Can the 9600 GS be replaced with the 9600 GT?? Hard to find any GS's online and plenty of GT's. Can anyone of you fine folks confirm for me that I can throw in the GT for full compatibility?

The motherboard model in my laptop is MBASZ0B001.

@SndChsr According to the list on the first page of this thread 9600M GS should work fine.

    Hello!
Today i have received package with GeForce GT240 and Core2 Duo Extreme X9000 which i tested in Acer Aspire 6920(G). Originally it was equiped with T5900 and GeForce 9500GS 512MB DDR2. I have flashed moded BIOS for this laptop. CPU working good for now, but with GT240 there is problem. After power up in 1-2 sec display is in vertical lines.

    Old video card:
    G84-625-A2
    Model: P407
    VG.8PG06.005

    New video card:
    M90GN MXM Card(N10P-GS/DDR3)
    N10P-GS-A2

I looked into BIOS (into dumps from Phoenix Tool), but i cant find something i can replace for example from 5920G.
Any ideas what i can do to fix that?

    hi,
Hi, can you send me a link where you bought the card, or a photo?

as i wrote in a post earlier with the gt240m you don't even have to use a mod bios, it will work with the original too, both in 5920g and 6920g and many more
if you have another laptop thy it there too, but my guess is that your card is defective

Maybe i need to flash VBIOS for this card? If you have bin/rom file from similar card for Acer i can flash with programmer.

After fight with seller for defective GT240M and refund, now i will try to mod GT330M from Toshiba. I read that some people have done this, but all finded by me links are dead. Is there somebody that can help me? I think i need add some resistors and eeprom like in AMD Radeon mod, but dont know where and what value. After adding VBIOS on it should my Acer 6920G works? I have already flashed some modded SBIOS, but i dont know if correct one, and what VBIOS i need. I have already upgraded this laptop to CPU X9100 but i hope it will not burn any DC/DC converters on motherboard.
    Please help me.

    Hi,

I own acer 4925. Upgrade it using x9000 processor. When i open it up, i found mxm slot with a dummy board. Can i upgrade it to dedicated vga card? It seems to be using mxm-b type card.
