    Hello,

I just want to know whether the 4810T is using SATA II? I wanted to get one to put in the OCZ Vertex SSD for good speed.

the building quality is very good ,although it is mainly build of plastic.Only the display-cover is made of aluminium. The 3810T is stable everywhere(cause its having no opt-drive).
The ram in my unit is clocked at 800mhz!(like the FSB).
If future setfsb versions will provide the right clockgen, then we can didnt need some OC-ram to OC the unit!

    Why did you need SATA-II?
In this Link the SSD-Drive is capped at 60mb/s! (DELL NETBOOK)
But look at the speed! Its really fast in a capped netbook!
(Small random write/read speed reveals more than seq read/write)
    http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2009/05/meet-runcore-pro-iv-really-fast-ssd.html

Btw. my 3810t has SATA-II (says everest and the Hitachi HTS545032B9A300
    drive)
SATA-II isnt requiered for a fast SSD

    Thanks for that No1R.

Really put it into perspective for me. I actually have the OCZ Vertex already and was looking for an inexpensive laptop to put it in.

How is your experience with the 3810T? Which one did you get the Core 2 Solo or Core 2 Duo? Would you recommend it?

I kind of agree but still I would prefer to put in a cheaper SSD if it was capped at 60MB/sec.

im having the Core 2 Solo SU3500 with
    the GMA X4500 graphic chipset!
Its quiet, the chassis is stable , the air keeps cool.
The CPU-performance seems ok for working and surfing or basic app.
The battery lasted in mine at a about 5 hours (100% screen,NFS MW)
In the first days i had trouble with the trustedinstaller.exe process (a known bug/CPU stays at 100%).But after cleaning and optimizing (getting rid of it and installing SP2) the performance is good (especially after making an 1GB RAMdrive/disk )Even casual gaming is possible on vista (BF2142 and Portal are working).I have bought the solo version ,since I m used to work on single-core CPUs (and i hadnt the opportunity to buy the duo/ hadnt known that the C2D version whould come)

If your looking for battery-life the dual-core-version shouldnt be much far away.(didnt know, but you can also disable one core in the hw-manager).

The performance of an extra core should help in vista since its background processes are always at about 5-10%

If u are used on Pentium m or amd 64 3200/3500+ performance, then the Solo should be enough
    my Passmark CPU @SU3500 @499
Passmark CPU @SU9400 700-800? (somebody mentioned)

btw. im later going to test Oblivion, UT2k4 and Dungeon-Siege II

i would also prefer to put in a cheaper SSD in a netbook.
But the 3810T isnt capped (its already running an fast Sata-ii drive)
and can also be bought with an Intel x25-M SSD-Drive.

i have chosen that link to demonstrate that even a slow capped book can work fast with an SSD, so that a new Timeline book shouldnt be a prob.

I know that. You were asking why he wants SATA II, that's why I answered :)

Can you try it? It's free. You'll probably get higher.

You have to press "Post Reply" and it will have options (file attachment, picture insertion, etc).
You can do only picture insertion in Quick reply window.

    I am anxiously waiting. :)

Are you in max. performance profile and on AC?

in the first days i have used Superspeed Ramdrive Plus (trial)
Now im using gavottes ramdrive (free)

the timeline series comes with 4gb ram with is more than enough!
I have taken 1gb of the systemmemory for the Drive and stored my temp-folder there.
About 400mb of my ramdrive are used for a swapfile (better than deactivaten it , since ive heard that appl. crashes without a swap-file).

Closing a Game is done in a 1-3 sec (task-bar opens direct up if the button is hit etc.)
    Its really an improvement!

put the *.pt files in your own data/documents/passmark folder
and start passmark. Chose compare files and then chose the attachment *.pt files!

Hey guys, I just wanted to post a quick update with CPU 100% load issue.

It's been three days now since I uninstalled ePower managment and everything seems to be stable now. So I'll just wait till there's new version of ePower or BIOS released and give it a shot again. But it's pretty refreshing to work with a stable thing again ;)

On a gaming question: I tested Brothers in Arms: road to hill 30 for now and FPS seems to be a touch lower then ideal, but on a brighter side, thanks to a big RAM, loading is pretty lightning + you won't get those little freeze-outs when coming out of a building or just coming to a new area.

UPDATE: UUps, hapened to me again, so I decided to start a new thread about this to make it apparent for google searchers.
So if youre a timeline owner, or just a fan, please report what your experience is with this problem (100% CPU load at random times, only restart helps)

    Hi,

I have got the 4810T about a week ago.

Anyone having problems with the screen blanking from time to time? The back-light is still on and the PC continues to work, but the screen is blank.

If I put it in standby, and back again, the screen work again.

There does not seem to be any pattern, as to when it blanks. It can be after 10 minutes or after two hours. It can be while surfing or when it is doing nothing, with no open programs and nothing running.

I have seen a few posts on other forums about this problem, but no solution.

BIOS is updated to latest version 1.15, and the graphics driver is also the most resent one.

    Any suggestions?

    Tia

didnt know, but maybe the default Acer Screensaver is making trouble ?
    (default time 10min).
Antivir says mine is an ad/spyware

My 3810T screen was blacking out randomly. The whole system freezed once. After updating OS and all possible drivers I finally quit and returned the laptop. Too bad as it is a beautiful machine for that price but in my case it was very unreliable, something I cannot afford.

I ve tested Oblivion (atm: escape of the prison, Imperial City) on UltraLow @640x480 and its fully playable!(so far)
Most of the Time its between 18 and 43 FPS.(Indoors and outdoors!)
Ground Textures looks weird cos of the quality-settings (like a scottish kilt!)
I m going to try higher settings now and fighting with multiple guards.

Edit: -UltraLow seems the limit, since i ve noticed some lag at Bruma (16Fps)
    -Looking into the Oblivion-Portal (Kvatch) @ 27Fps.
-trying some Fps-mods like Pixellivion or OOO later
-texture-size didnt made a difference in Fps

Gpu-z didnt work on my old GMA X3100

I ve heard PC-wizard should find out the clock
(it works with the predecessor X3100, maybe it works for our x4500?)

    Edit:
Pc-wizard isnt working (tested version 2008)

    EVEREST ULTIMATE EDITION works(?):
GPU clock: 320mhz <----- seems to be the right clock
    RAMDAC: 300mhz
Pixel Pipelines:4 (it should be 10, maybe they have reduced the Pipelines or everest isnt working right ?)
(only 4 Pipelines can be the reason for the fillrate(@568) which is lower than my downclocked x3100 (@870))
    Pixel Shader: not supported (?)
    Vertex Shader: not supported (?)
    Directx harware support: Directx 10
    Pixel Fillrate 1280MPixel/s

    bad news:
    GPU cant be overclocked!
I ve looked in the x3100 forum
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=128777&page=171
and found out that the core-clock for the x3100 is clockable with a value-change in an adress-editor!

    X3100:
    BUT:
the GS45(low power) has no changable values!(look at 22.2.28 GCFGC)
    http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/320122.pdf

    concerning GMAbooster:
it only looks for changeable address-values in the chipset and changes it (like the x3100 if you change the fsb)!
Atm it only works with the gma 950.But in later Versions it shouldnt be impossible for the x3100.

    didnt noticed it
    Thx! Im changing it

btw: thats a quite good review in ur sig!
But I didnt know why they think 4GB ram arent helpful ?
PAE is activated, so it should use the full 4gb ram (minus ~1GB for the Ramdrive +GPU).

    4gb so-dimm ddr3 isnt that cheap (60-90€)

i think a solo cpu being the serious bottleneck, adding 1 more gig to 3gigs wont make big difference. it would help , but not worth .

    Hello to all,

I followed the whole discussion in the forum and wanted to know please what Acer Aspire Timeline recommended buying.

    The laptop is used for:
    - Surf the Internet
    - See and download videos from Youtube
    - Music and video editing
    - E-mail, regular office work

I thought the 4810TG processor SU9400 with ATI graphics.

In Italy I can not find it.
    Thanks for the information.

gianca, for light video editing the SU9400 will be enough. For more serious video editing you'll need a 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo and a dedicated GPU.

I don't think the 4810T with Ati GPU has been released in Europe yet.

The Timeline is built for battery life and portability. Not for power. If you're ok with 3-4 hours battery life you can find better options for you.

Phil, thanks very much for your reply.

I am interested in a notebook with good performance, the last model, which I hard time for the family, including a child of 13 years. I do not have the possibility 'to change laptop every year ...

It looks like the 4810TG is for sale on the German site online, but I want to buy in Italy.

Okay 3-4 hours of battery, and sorry if I ask a favor, you may give me a good laptop? About same prices of Acer??

I am very confused, some people say one thing, others the opposite.
It seems to say that Euro 1000 is a small matter.

I await your news. Thank you

    Hi,

Just a quick report. I've just got an Acer 4810TG (Solo CPU) here in Taipei. First thing I did was blow away Windows Vista (I don't speak Chinese) and install Ubuntu 9.04. This may have been a mistake, I've been running Ubuntu on my previous kit but its not so good on this laptop right now. Here is why..

The ATI 4330 card works with some opensource drivers that are not so good. Poor 3D support and poor 2D performance. People can switch to using the proprietary ATI catalyst drivers which are supposed to be sweet when they work. But on this laptop (Catalyst 9.6) they don't work at all. I haven't played much but its seems impossible to get any support from ATI and their website doesn't even list the 4330 as a valid model.

Now the ATI opensource drivers are both slow and seem to have bad power management. As a result the box runs really hot. And my new Acer 4810TG under Linux lasts just under 3 hours on battery with light use and WIFI on.. Not exactly the 8 hours I was expecting.

And I had to turn ACHI off and switch to IDE as the harddrive interface so the HD is probably slower than under Windows.

On the bright side I love the keyboard, the screen looks nice too me and its very svelte and light. But I'd say stick with with Windows if you get the TG model.

    Damon.

An update to my earlier post about bad battery life on the 4810TG ATI Radeon 4330 model in Linux. Acer just released a new bios (1.20) and it adds an option to switch from Hybrid to Discrete graphics. When I switch the graphics to Discrete I can install the ATI fglrx drivers (Catalyst 9.6) in Linux. These drivers have a power management console and this dramatically lowers the heat output and hence hopefully improves battery life too (though yet to test that bit).

Also, the performance in Linux with the new graphics drivers is much better. I can now play HD video in youtube, 3D runs a treat and the system just feels zippy.

    Hi All
just had my 4810TZ for 2 days, I installed windows 7 RC1 on a spare momentus 7200.3 I had, and all of acer's apps and drivers installed without a problem.
windows 7 seems to be much smoother than vista, BUT battery life is now averaging 6 to 6 1/2 hours instead of the 8 i'm getting with vista!
I remember having the same experience with an aspire one AOD150!!
    Any thoughts on that?
