    Time for a 3 year update :)

Haven't used the laptop much but my PC recently died so I'm using it again while building a new machine.

    The 5315 still works great.

I bought a 32gb SSD for it but discovered that my 40GB C drive partition (on a 500GB WD HD) can't be shrunken to fit onto the 32GB SSD. At least not that I can see.

I tried using Acronis to clone the C partition onto the SSD, no dice.

Has anyone used an SSD on the 5315 yet?

    Hello,
    I have a laptop Acer Aspire 5315 and I just purchased a Intel dual-core 2,20 T7500 CPU. I also bought a thermal paste Arctic Cooling MX-4.
Now, if I have Win7 Ultimate.
    My question is:
Do I have to reinstall my windows after I upgrade my CPU? And also do I need to put thermal paste on my video card?

    Regards,
    Lucian

No you don't have to reinstall, swapping CPUs won't affect your hard drive where the programs and documents are stored :)

There is no video card in a 5315. If you mean "Do I have to put paste on the CPU", the answer is yes :) Arctic is the best.

    Thanks for your answer.

I have a dual-boot Win7+Snow Leopard. 10.6.7. Do you think it will work this too?

the paste on the cpu you have to remove& clean.
if there is a thermal pad on the IGP, you can put m back... whitout cleaning...

    Hey, thanks!

On edit: And to add to this awesome thread. Recently upgraded to Windows 7, and added a Seagate 750 GB 7200rpm hard drive. Decided to stretch using this laptop out for 3-5 more years. Best computer I've had so far, considering I originally got it for $400 reconditioned from TigerDirect in May of '08.

Another successful T8100 install. I thought my old 5315 was pretty fast
with a WD 250GIG Black drive and Geil PC-5300 at two gigs, but the
addition of a new T8100 has made this thing just stupidly fast with
easy and fast loads while doing other things. Only thing I'm
concerned with is temps. I'm using Speed Fan and it's showing
45c for the drive, 45c for temp, 41c for Core 1 and 40c for
Core 2. Something to be concerned with ? The temps seem
a little high to me, but the unit hasn't burped once. Running
    very smooth.

Anyway, Thanks SOOOOO much for the heads up on this !

Those temps seems ok. What's the ambient temperature like of the place(s) you're using the laptop?

You could try undervolting, if it's done right it'll reduce CPU temps and increase your battery life a bit.

Wow I'm late in the game of this 137 page thread... only perused through the last 8 to get an idea of what people have done recently to their 5315.

I want to add more life to my daughters Celeron powered 5315. The only thing I've done was increase the memory to 2gb when I first purchased it new years ago. Now that prices of parts have come down considerably I figured it was time to pimp it a bit.

    things on the list:
    1) upgrade bios to latest 1.45 (most current on acers site)
    2) T8100 CPU
    3) 500GB HD

Any concerns I should think about before I take the plunge? eg cooling, bios compatibility, motherboard compatibility etc... thanks in advance

the t8100 cpu can u use whithout problems, my t8100 runs @37 degrees centigrade. (not load just basic tasks)

i see no reason why the 500GB HD wont work.

hint: i may use the old and new HD on a pc so u can mirror the data and make the partitoins bigger.
(if u have an WD harddisk , u can use "acronis true image wd edition" to do that. its free.
a clean install is always good, it takes some work to install your programs again.

There are few T9500 tryers. But is it ok in windows xp. Plug'n Play. Same question goes for T9300.

    T7300
    3GB GEIL PC5300 (now running 667Mhz)
    Intel 320 SSD

    Running W7 ultimate x64 SP1 + Office 10 Pro Plus
You'll have to love this baby, all works well and lightning fast now, system cosmetics still minst as well

Just ordered an Intel 4965AGN to top things of :D

    and the party goes on:

T9500 & Intel 5300AGN arrived (already had 130mbit with the 4965agn, but now going for 300Mbit in dual mode) The T9500 is just for fun, because it can be done :D laptop is a screamer again :)

4965 is capable of 300mbps in the same way 5300 is and both are so it's not an upgrade that was needed. Connection link of 130mbps suggests that you've used 20MHz channel width wither on router or in advanced settings of Intel drivers. There's also a chance that it's set to 40MHz or Auto and automatically falls back to 20MHz because of a good-neighbor mode.

I understood the 4965 doesn't want to play ball on 40mhz an hence doesn't go higher than 130mbit on the dir-655 and the 5300 gets the full 300 (if your lucky and non interference of neighbours allow u)

i would say : yes, its a T-series processor, they will fit in the 5315.
fsb is 800, so that wont be the problem eigher.
make shure u have thermal paste :)

A thing I forgot to ask.
Now I have DDR2 memory at 667 mhz. Is it ok or will I need it at 800 mhz due to the FSB Speed?

    T7250 should work.
The memory you have should work just fine too.

@denneboom - not all T-series processors work on 5315, just the socket P ones.

No u dont need anything different. The laptop is limited to 667 mhz.
faster memory will clock down to 677 mhz.The only advantage is lower latency's.

@ATG. the socket p/socket M story. id forgot about that sry.
at least i was right about the compatibility.

I've done an upgrade of my 5315 to have a T5450 Core2Duo CPU and 3G of RAM, running Home Vista 32-bit. It's been running for some time now pretty solidly. I've even installed an SSD, whichs is even better!!!

I'm wondering if I can upgrade the RAM to 4G if I install Windows 7 64-bit instead?

I also assume that a T8300 as a further upgrade will also work?

I'm running with the V1.45 BIOS (the latest).

Answering my own question here (at least my understanding of it), is that you can't upgrade to 4G, even if you install Win 7 64-bit due to limitations with the memory controller chipset (the Intel Santa Rosa chipset). There are two chipsets in they designed, the 82GM965, which supports 4G, and the 82GL960, which only supports 2G. The 5315 has the 82GL960 but due to some design flaw/BIOS defect, the machine will allow 3GB but not 4GB.

Check out the acer 5315 specs

Can someone confirm this as being the truth?

Having been on these forums for a while and starting out with a 5315 myself, I've never seen anyone who has been able to upgrade to 4gb, even 3gb in some machines can cause problems, but looks as if you've not had any yourself. I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm whether or not, but to my knowledge it's not possible.

I have the Acer Aspire 4315, the 5315 little brother and I can confirm that it works fine with 4GB :). To be able to use all 4GB one needs a 64bit OS. If you have Windows XP or a 32bit version of Vista or 7 you're better of with 3GB as the 4th gigabyte cannot be used/detected.

for the CPU you can go all the way to a T9500. The T8300 will work too. At the moment the best value for money is the T7300 as they sell on ebay for about £15 including shipment.

I tested a T4200 on my Aspire 4315 and it worked. I think the T4*00 and T6*00 CPUs should work on the Aspire 5315 too. They are very cool. The T4200 max temperature was below 60 while the T7300 max temperature is in the low 70c. The performance of the T4200 and the T7300 is about the same.

On the 5315, people have issues going above 3gb, nothing to do with the OS, the machine refuses to boot. Even 3gb sometimes causes boot issues.

PC5300 and PC6400 will run at 667Mhz after upgrading the CPU to a Core 2 Duo. The laptop will select the right speed in its own.

If you want to modify the speed by hand you can you SPDtool or Thaiphoon Burner. Do not that not all RAM are flashable.

I'm reasonably certain that this has to do with the Intel 82GL960 memory controller chip which is specified to handle only 2GB. Obviously there is either a flaw in the BIOS or the 82GL960 such that it can handle 3G but 4G seems to break it. However, I'm interested in someone confirming my understanding.

If you want 4G you need to ensue the memory controller can handle it. Something like the 82GM965, which is NOT in the 5315.

Possibly the BIOS since Acer Aspire 4315 and the Toshiba Equium L40 have a GL960 chipset and they can be upgraded to 3GB and 4GB.

Curious, but you may be right. The Intel 960 datasheet explicitly indicates 2G limit but IF the BIOS configures the chip correctly, then it must be possible. Unfortunately, it appears for the 5315, version 1.45 of the BIOS will only work with 3G at the most.

It may be possible, would need to pull the laptop apart again to see if this chip is socketed. However, the problem could lie with the BIOS. You would be taking a big chance I think. Given we're now talking about a 4 year old machine, it's probably better to save up and get a new i5 or i7 laptop, they are going very cheap...$AUD600 - $AUD800.

I think that would be impossible, so many things would been changing, the chip is soldered to the mobo as far as I remember, and as mentioned may be a sight easier to save up for a new machine.

So I have the 4965g installed & with the drivers from Intel
made it easy. Still I have one terminal open and that being
"t3". If I have this right, some members are running this
same WIFI card using all avail ports or terminals.

Is there a way I can wire my 5315 which
only has two wires which I have hooked to T1 AND T2 into
the T3 port and maybe get all avail options covered ?

Can I jump a wire from the T2 into the T3 to see what
happens without damage to the laptop ?

Please enlighten. With help from members and mods here
this old laptop just purrrrs, but I like old hotrods IE making
    this older 5315 run.

    Thanks

Hi everyone! Thanks to this forum i was able to upgrade my Acer!
    My configuration is now :
    CPU: T9500
    RAM: 2 gigs
WiFi & Bluetooth BT Mini PCI-E Combo Card
    Webcam integrated
    64 gb ssd hdd

I tried to install win 7, but it fails to boot. I get black screen when i turn on the power. I have to turn off and try again. Sometimes I need to repeat this many times. When I manage to boot in, everything runs normal, the sistem is stabil ... I like the way win 7 runs on may ACER 5315.
Anyone knows what may cause this? The exact reason...or what test should I do to find the problem.
Another problem is on Win XP... when i replaced the old celeron CPU with the new T9500 i was expecting a big difference but I not impressed, not at all.. All i`m thinking is maybe I have the wrong drivers. My ssd hdd should help more isn`t it??
Do I need drivers for HDD? In bios I selected IDE MODE. I wish I can select AHCI mode but I don`t exactly how to to that.(If someone could explain in details how to do it i`ll be very happy)

    QUESTIONS:

    1. About drivers: where can I find the best drivers for xp for my Acer 5315. Updated drivers.
    2. Because I have the T9500 CPU, do I need to change the chipset drivers or something else?
    3. Does anyone knows there can i find to buy a power jack to fit the charger. A link will be nice :)

    THANKS EVERYONE!!!

I think I posted this is the wrong thread so I am posting it here again. sorry if that is bad, it's late and I need to go to bed. anyway...

Hi all, I recently acquired an Acer Aspire 5315-2153.

CPU-Z shows my chipset is GL960. Currently my CPU is the stock Celeron M 530. I threw in 2 GB of RAM and I've already upgraded my BIOS to 1.45.

What is the fastest processor I can upgrade to?

Also I would like to go ahead and upgrade the hard drive. Can this thing handle a 300GB or more drive?

    Thanks,
    cash22

Up to Core 2 Duo T9500, and any HDD size that physically fits shall work. The days of BIOS-based HDD size limitations are long gone.

Are you sure? I thought that T9500 is Socket P Processor, I think he can go up to T7600 but I could be wrong.
EDIT: Sorry, I was wrong, I forgot the chipset which is GL960. My apologies.

Go for a T7300, very cheap and you'll be happy.

Well I goofed and bought a T8300 before I realized that just because the numbers were higher than the T7000 series doesn't mean they are better. I might get a T7300 anyway.

    Hey Bigozone,

    I've got a question.

I have the Acer Aspire 5315.
Could I upgrade this laptop from my current processor:

    Celeron M 560 - 2.13 GHz, 1 Mb, 533 MHz, P

    To a:

    Core 2 Duo T7100 - 1.8 GHz, 2 Mb, 800 MHz, P?

EDIT: Also, does anyone know where I can buy these "older" Processors?
All I can think about are used product sites.
