Dumb question time. I notice that everyone is referring to the Aspire 5315 as having a 800Mhz FSB, and specing out the processor upgrades accordingly.
MY original spec sticker is still on my Aspire. It says the following:
Aspire 5315-2940
Intel Celeron processor 540
(1.86 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache)
Is that 533 MHz FSB indicative only of the default processor and not of what the system as a whole is capable of?
CPU-Z says the mainboard chipset is Intel GL960 Rev C0 and the BIOS v 1.45. The system currently has 3 GB of DDR2 RAM and a 160GB SSD hard drive. It is in fact running Windows 8 tolerably--at least as well as I could imagine any single core processor doing.
Am I set to go for a processor upgrade to one of these 800 MHz FSB processors? The $25 or so I've seen quoted for most of the midrange ones (the T8300 or something around that level) seems to make it too good NOT to do.
-
-
Even if the default CPU is 533MHz, it's safe to pop in an 800MHz one.
-
3 gig ram, nice. Waiting for SSD drives to drop to justify getting one myself for this old laptop.
Wiki describes the FSB as external communication with the system. NetRoller 3d mentioned that the GPU (see pictures in my post and the start of this thread) is also the northbridge...which wiki says is "Front-side buses usually connect the CPU and the rest of the hardware via a chipset, which Intel implemented as a northbridge and a southbridge:"
It's mentioned in this thread before, forget who but you can do a search, but apparently the fastest you can stick in this system is 800MHz so the T9500 is max. They have 2 of them, one is socket p. The t8300 is good to go for your system, I have the t7300 socket p, List of Intel Core 2 microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -
Mr. Big. Thanks for the guide. You and me both looking for a cheap t9500...and in addition, a cheap SSD
-
-
any socketP dual core will help you by leaps and bounds,,, glad the guide helped... and i'm going to be upgrading the drivers soon & maybe even creating a win8 guide for the 5315.
p.s. the temps mentioned below MUST be Celsius because at 30F your processor would be frozen! -
can I use memory pc 6400 ? or must I to use only pc 5300 ? Now I use 2 modules to 1 gb pc 5300 (667 mhz).

yeah, my 5315 is still kicin'......
just need a faster CPU -
My Aspire 5315 with Celeron and Windows 8 PRO WMC. Great. I search to buy T9500
-
Just upgraded from Celeron 530 1,73 GHz to Core2Duo T5750 2GHz and I have to say the notebook is just flying!!
It's obvious it's got so much more power now... Thank you so much for the tip...
I bought the CPU for like 15$ including shipping from local auction website.
Using it with Windows 8 PRO WMC and have 2GB RAM installed at the moment. -
I upgraded my 5315 a while back with a 7700. 2.4 ghz 4m cache. 800mhz bus. the system runs great but at 533mhz buss only. and runs cooler and better battery life then the celeron
-
It's been a year or close to it on my second 5315 upgrade which was 3 gigs of G.Skill ram
a T-8100 due core 2 chip, a WD Scorpio Black 320 HD and an Intel WIFI card and have to
say as with the 1st one, it just rocks and rolls. Every blue moon or so I may get a lock up
but that's from me trying to do too many things at one. Wish the GPU could be updated
but, oh well.
Runs at 36/38C constantly. Runs nice and anyone who has any doubts about it, at least do
a CPU upgrade. Well worth it and makes the old 5315 run really sweet. -
Just put Win 8 on my 5315 and came back here looking for drivers but the link to the 2 zip files in the first link of the first post of this thread are broken, as are all the other links I've found for all the 5315 drivers.
Anyone got a current link to the needed drivers?
Thanks!
Steve. -

Thanks for the quick reply
Need the Acer ones to make the "e" button work, sound and modem aren't working either.
Basically need these:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/297424-aspire-5315-xp-drivers-latest-updates.html -
Those drivers in that link are very old and I wouldn't worry about those drivers, if the Launch Manager Application doesn't work, try different versions, one of them might work. -
Tried them all, still the green triangle button, and networking, doesn't work.
Surely someone has the files from the first link in the first post? -
-
Bump.
No reply from bigozone, he hasn't been on since Jan. -

Thanks, I know it's not like anyone owes me anything and I appreciate any help

hi
thx to this thread i've upgraded my cpu to a T5550 and than to a T7700...
now i need more powerand i've seen that the X9000 is a 800mhz fsb,socket p and gm965 compatible...
but in this thread noone has mounted this cpu, anyone has some info about? -
This is the old driver repository, I'm surprised it's still working. I know it says "vista" but some if not all apps should work with XP too. Check the "Application" folder for some E software, the Launch Manager is in "Drivers"
) and it had heat issues and BSODs. If I were to buy the best CPU for a 5315 I think I'd go for a T9300.
-
just a month ago i spent 20€ for the t7700... -
Well, IMHO it's not worth it. I mean if I were in your shoes I'd stick with the T7700 and save my money.

Ok today is 7-29-13 I just upgraded my machine to windows 7 after well more hours then I would like for the updates! System Is running even better! Then it did before! Any questions I would of had about it Have been put to rest! I am for sure I do not want windows 8 on this machine! Have to deal with it at work, and not happy with it so that is why I went with it for this machine. All working better and at least 10% faster when ran a few benchmark tests. even MS windows exparence showed a 10% higher ratings in Processor. and Ram. Just for everyones information! The others all stayed the same
-
It has been a few weeks now! And NO PROBLEMS!!! with my 5315, Next week after my surgery! LOL. I will upgrade my daughters aspire from vista to 7 also. The one thing I did notice on window 7 was I had less slow downs when I had to edit and filter files for work! Then I did with Vista. So windows 7 did allow the Proc. to work more efficient and better!!!
-
just do it, with a cpu that others have said will work..... like a T-8300 or better yet a T-9300 or T-9500
-
I am running a t7700 the proc. runs great for the cache etc being great! the system will allow 800mhz bus but will still only run at 533mhz!
-
Thanks for the PM Bigozone, all works perfect now

Hello, I am spanish... and my english is poor, but I try write good...
I have ACER ASPIRE 5315, Core 2 Duo t8100 and 2GB RAM (2x1gb pc2 5300) dual channel. I like to up max RAM memory, for example 4gb, but I not found the maximum Ram which is currently supporting. My BIOS is last version. ¡THANKS!
Image: -
Acer Aspire 5315 notebook specifications
But sometimes adding extra RAM works for others even the specs clearly state that the maximum is 2GB, so you need to try and see whether it works. -
I put 4GB in mine and only 3GB shows as available but that's fine with me
-
Very thanks! -
The 5315 if running the bios of 1.45 If not go to acer web site down load it. and update it!.. Back to the point, 3GB is all the system will run on if running any version of 32 bit software. if I remember right 2GB on the bottom and a 1 GB on the top, if not it is the other way around! (LOL) If you are running any version of 64bit software then the system will see a max of 4GB. (When I upgraded to windows 7 I was going to do a clean install and do the 64bit but didn't have the want to do a full install of everything again!
But I found that with 3GB That I have not had any issues for what I do! Well at least with the Acer!)(Also I found that when I had 4GB installed that the system wanted to hang on start up! And went back to the 3GB and the system only saw the 3GB anyway) I hope this helped you out!

4gb on acer 5315 give bsod
see first posts -
I have 2GB and BIOS v1.45. attempt to put 3GB but the 2GB module not recognized in any sock. Why??
-
You need to find out which other models with 4GB capable MBs were used and compare the specs, if you want to take that route.

I can actually open more than one tab without the computer hanging or having to restart the damn thing!! Thanks to everyone who has written posts on how to upgrade the 5315. Cheers!!!

and now im upgrading my cpu, the problem is, when i turn on my 5315, i get no display and it turns of after 5 seconds or so...all though i pop back in the celeron 530 and it works normally...did i do something wrong....help please

Hello, there, I just found an Intel ® Core ™ Duo Processor T2700
(2M Cache, 2.33 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)
I would have wanted to know if its going to my computer • acer aspire 5315
My config:
Intel ® Celeron ® Processor 550
(1M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 533 MHz FSB)
3GB RAM
Intel GMA X3100 -
T2700 won't work, it's a socket M. You need a socket P compatible processor.

Hi all,
As a surprise to "Her Indoors" I'm going to revamp her old 5315. We bought it new in early 2008 and it's done well as a basic but slow lappy. Its profile is still as it came from the factory apart from running Win7 via an upgrade in 2010 - Celeron 530 1.73GHz, 1GB RAM, BIOS v 1.18.
I've spent a few evenings reading all 165 pages of this thread(!) and a lot of related stuff so I think I'm ok but this will be my fist upgrade to a laptop. I've built several desktop PCs over the past 20+ years.
I've ordered a T9500 and 3GB of RAM so this should fly after.
The first thing to do is to flash the BIOS. The only BIOS available on the Acer website is 1.45 so I'm hoping that will do the trick (I've found all the old ones at ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5315/vista/Bios/ ).
The plan;
1. Clean everything.
2. Update BIOS.
3. Back up documents and data.
4. Install new CPU.
5. Install new RAM.
6. Reinstall Vista using the recovery partition to ensure fan settings for T9500 are detected.
7. Redo the upgrade to Win 7.
8. Install any missing drivers.
9. Reinstall programs and remove bloatware.
10. Give "new" laptop to wife and bask in the sunshine of her smile.
Any other suggestions or advice?
John -
It's a better idea to directly install Windows 7, then use the drivers from Acer's website, than to reinstall Vista and upgrade to 7.
Even better, Windows 7 usually will have no problems with fan settings on CPU change - it's a Vista-specific bug. (However, be sure to boot up Windows 7 at least once after you update the BIOS, but before changing any hardware.)
There are some modded versions of the v1.45 BIOS which help make use of extra features in 45nm CPUs (e.g. hardware virtualization, Dual-IDA, etc.) - they are usually labeled as "for 5720G", but the 5315 needs the same BIOS.
