    Thanks NR3D.

I have to go the upgrade route if I reinstall windows as I only have a Win7 upgrade disk. Sounds like I might not need to do the reinstall at all if the fan settings will be ok under Win7. Would save a whole lot of hassle to be sure.

I'm interested in the modded v1.45 BIOS and I see your sig refers to the "black edition" but I can't seem to find a link for it. Can you help? Assuming you are absolutely sure it's ok to use with a 5315.

Well I've done it. Now running the T9500 and 3GB RAM. Absolutely no problems. Had to reactivate Windows and Office after due to the hardware changes. The laptop is now very useable and should be for at least a few more years..

I installed BIOS v1.45. It's quite limited with few options. Ideally I would like to be able to increase the amount of memory allocated to graphics. Not by much, just a little.

You can find a link to my Mega folder in the MXM BIOS modding threads. The Black Edition BIOS can be found in that folder - however, IIRC it has some hibernation-related bugs, so if you encounter them, try MXM Edition.

    Hello,

I have an Acer Aspire 5315 with windows 7 pro installed, did a bios update to version 1:45, and since that update the wireless card is not detected in device manager.

As for the DVD drive is detected in device manager, but does not open.

Someone here can help me please.

    Thanks

you can use a 2gb ram stick but MUST be in the slot closest to the motherboard. T8300 is a great CPU for these they beat the celeron to pieces. as for better WIFI, i've stuck w/ Atheros chipest based N-class mini-card dell branded that was made by D-link i think (but just an educated guess). that has made finding drivers that operate the card and the WIFI light both IMPOSSIBLE.

but any aftermarket MINI-PCI card that fits your need should suffice. i'd try to stick w/ Atheros, Intel. or Broadcom: in that order. my D-link works great but the dell proprietary crap both on the card's "firmware" and the drivers.

So to sum up ANY aftermarket MINI PCI card that is N class should work fine as long as the package says it supports the OPPERATING SYSTEM your laptop is running.

    bigO :)

    1. UPGRADE FIRMWARE to version 1.45 (only newer versions of firmware support newer chips)
    2. 2GIG RAM MUST GO CLOSEST TO THE MOTHER BOARD (if you got them out of order you'd beeps but no screen)
    3. make sure none of the pins on the T9500 are bent or broken off.

if you've done the 3 things above then it's most likely a bad CPU, do you know anyone else with a laptop that has easy access to the CPU which you could use to test it in? or maybe your locally owned PC shop could test it free or for a few $. other than that, i don't know what to tell you. if the only thing you changed was the CPU, and you know the CPU was firmly pushed into the socket and the socket lock screw was locked back after that, then either your BIOS didn't support the CPU (any bios 1.30 or lower wouldn't because they were wrote before intel relesed the developers the chip), the other option is the worst.... you have a BAD CPU.

sorry for the news, and i hope it's just a matter of updating your BIOS,

    later,

    bigO

BIOS UPDATE to version 1.45 solves that issue i'm pretty sure, if your talking about XP anyway.

    bigO

THE FOLLOWING APPLIES TO THE ASPIRE 5315 MODELS ONLY, but other models may be the same.

not sure about the 4GB thing, but these 5315s do work fine with any 2GB module but it has to be but in the slot closest to the motherboard, then to achieve 3GB put a 1GB stick in the outer slot. but IIRC anytime i put the ram sticks in the wrong slots the machine would not boot and only gave error beeps.

    hope that helps,

    bigO

i missed the fact that you did a motherboard swap w/ a different model to get around the limitation

i have about 10 2GB sticks that aren't recognized because they are bad/fried/toast or what ever. i have yet to see these laptops need any special type like some of the older ones had to have low density and some had to have high density, but these PCs don't care

that supprises me kinda, i'm pretty sure when i put 2 2GB sticks in mine it just beeps at me. maybe my second stick was bad, or

Maybe if the 2GB stick is designed so that each side is a different bank so that is also a possibility along with a density possibly playing a major role too? i'd like to know what brand and model of ram you have in the outside slot or just use one of those harware analyzer programs to get the info w/o even twisting a screwdriver. thanks in advance

hope this info help those above as well as any who may read this,

    bigO

n2gc is right, back 2 yrs ago they did have issues with their first drivers, but since then they really are better than atheros. i guess what i should have said is it's best if you can get a WIFI card w/ a chipset based on the chipset that your router is based on. while this does take a bit of research on both pieces of hardware it will usually payoff in better transfer speeds and connection strengths thru walls or at distances.

hope those facts help clear it up, but you can't go wrong with that intel 495 AGN. just remember that n class transfers really need a 3rd antenna, but you can shrink wrap it and put it in bottom of case saving you from opening the LCD case.

    hope that info helps,

    Hi bigO and other contributors,
Thank you for posting this guide it has been very helpful. My brother just gave me his apire 5315 and it was pretty much unusable, very slow and sluggish with vista. I put lubuntu on the laptop to start with and then I came across your thread when I googled about upgrading. The laptop has now got 2GB of RAM and I have swapped the cpu for a T5750 I found on eBay for only £5 :). Now it runs like a dream and is perfect for casual web browsing and video watching.
Just a couple of things which may be useful for others,

-Before upgrading I put lubuntu on the laptop, it ran well but the fan was not coming on and it kept overheating and switching off, updating the Bios has fixed this and the fan now works with lubuntu.

    - When I tried to update the bios using the flash from the acer website v1.45, I would get the 'verify error' and then the laptop would freeze, I had to turn it off by removing the battery and AC cord. The laptop would then not turn on and I had to recover using the fn+esc method which you posted on another thread. I tried to win flash a few times and had the same thing happened. I did a google search and came across this forum [ubuntu] Acer Aspire 5315 - Page 3 and managed to upgrade to v1.43 using the iso and instructions given on that forum.

I just have a couple of questions,

    - I read that you can upgrade to 3GB of RAM, is there only a certain make of RAM that you can use to make this possible?
    - If I upgraded to 3GB of RAM could this have any bad effects on other parts of the laptop?
    - Is it worth going from 2 to 3 GB would there be much increase in performance?
    - Are there much differences between v1.43 and v1.45 of the Bios?

    Thanks again
    Vin

3gb or ram is no problem, just use similar ram. i think it works best when the 2gb and 1gb stick of ram are the same speed, and the 2 gb stick always goes closest to the motherboard. density of ram has not been an issue for me, and i've even used mixed speeds when i have to.

but 3gb will have NO bad effects as long as you take proper grounding precautions when installing. once it's in it's great and i'm not much into the unix world, but when running XP or other OS ;) it is easy to see the difference. next try a T8300 or an X9500 CPU, it's amazing what a 7 year old laptop can do as long as you don't need much graphics.

BIOS ver 1.45 added new CPU info, i believe it had to do with temps and when to kick the fan on/off. i can't remember which version had the sleep or hibernate bug when running windows, but for your current CPU there is no real need to flash, however i always keep my old POS as up to date as possible. there should be a changelog.txt file in with the bios download, and it should have all changes listed.

glad to be of help and to know i'm not the only one still using a 7 y/o lappy!

    later,

    bigO

3GB Not a Issue And YES WORTH IT! Like said 2GB close to mother board! Clone drive, upgrade it too a 7200rpm another major upgrade! WORTH IT! Your Heat ISSUE! I will bet 99.9% sure the cooling fan exit is CLOGED! ABOUT 99% of PC Laptops this is a problem Turn over Fan very easy to get to and Very easy to pull out! You will see the finns too the exit side FULL OF LENT!!! The heat will cause all problems I am pretty sure when you tried to upgrade the bios which will make the proc. WORK HARD WHICH HEAT UP! THEN OPPS PROBLEMS AND SHUT DOWN! Is your problem Pull fan out used compressed can of air after fan is out!. if you have the bottom off. you will be able to see if the fan is working when laptop is on! That way you will also know if the fan is good! also!

I have windows 7 64bit loaded also! My system will not run the 4GB either. and the laptop I pulled the ram out of works no problems Just for some reason! Even with 64bits some of these boards just will not run the 4GB. But then again 99% of what I need my acer to do I have never exceeded the 3gb when doing stuff! LOL when I need the real power I use my Mac Pro with the 15GB and I7 proc. But My old ACER still runs better then most of the guys with their newer PC's on stuff from work! LOL

I have a t7500 cpu and used 1+1gb of ram till last week when i got a 2gb module... In my case if i put the 2gb in the slot close to the mb... i get bsod.
Tomorrow my t9500 will arrive and I also got a samsung 840 120gb ssd :D.
For wifi I use a broadcom bcm4313 both wifi+btooth 3.0 [mostly any wifi card you put in that slot works... half-size and full-size as I tried about 7]

Is it normal for the T9500 to stay always at max clock - 2600 even when it's not processing anything? Does the SSD can have any influence on the CPU clock?
    The T7500 speed clock I had before used to drop... 800 - 1600 - 2200.

No. The BIOS probably doesn't recognize the CPU's multipliers. I never recommend T9xxx for 5315 because these CPUs on that laptop never work 100% as expected. Same goes for X9xxx
Check this thread, if the problem is in the BIOS as I suspect doubt it'll help but I'd give it a shot: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...arket-upgrades/235824-undervolting-guide.html

The temperatures are not a problem as the cpu stays at 35°C and never gets past 50°C.
Would you suggest flashing the icl50 mxm or black edition bios to see if anything happens ? - flashed black edition - no change

    I'll try the undervolting.
The undervolting worked. From a fixed 1200/2600mhz-cpu clock and 2600mhz throttle I managed to drop the frequencies to 600-600 0.95v :D
Temperatures are 29°C idling at 600mhz with the fan that now never goes on to 51°C stressed for 5mins at 2600mhz.

    Aspire 5315 user here too.

Anyone ever confirm the T4x00 pentiums work with the 5315? I bought a T4200 2.0ghz on ebay and it is not stable, freezing on every boot into vista, even after I reinstalled with the D2D recovery. Funny, it works in safe mode no probs. Popped in the old T2310 I was using and it's working fine.

Anyone know if a T3400 pentium will work (65nm, 2.16ghz/1MB/667fsb)?

Being honest I would not bother with pentiums. If You want cheap, cold, good processor, look after T6400, T6500 or T6600. Those are full core 2 duo with 2MB cache on 800MHz bus produced already in 45nm, based on Penryn core. That mean, that they run cooler and are more powerful clock for clock then older cpu based on Merom core.

Yes YOU NEED too up grade the firmware too 1.45 before you put in the 7700! Otherwise. it will not see the proc. If you go too acer web site you can download the firmware!

    Hello guys,

I need to ask something about memory on 5315. I have upgraded my laptop to T5750 Core 2 Duo proc with 2 gigs of RAM. My question is this : The laptop will support 4 gigs with Windows 7 installed and Bios 1.45( or what ever is the latest version ) on it ? I want to make the best of this laptop. Thanks for any answers.

Nope, 3GB is the maximum you can have in a 5315, its a chipset limitation.

I think the best cpu that you can get without any modding is the t9500. It will work always at max speed but with rmclock you can undervolt it to idle at 600Mhz.
There are a lot of cpu's that can work... budget allowing... I won't pick anything with a fsb higher than 800 or any extreme edition.

    - for some more info and cpu compatibility read forum posts page 1 or 167

Did you try putting the original CPU back in? Check the S-spec on the new CPU here CPU-World: Microprocessor news, benchmarks, information and pictures to see if you have a Socket P or M CPU.

IIRC the Aspire 5315 takes the Socket P type.

I think bios v1.35 has some cooling issues. You should upgrade it to v1.45 from europe site, for example Italy has it. Spain and Portugal might have it too id that's closer to your language.
T7700 has a Merom core as my T7500 so some extra heat (+10°C) than the newer cpu based on Penryn is normal...

I would upgrade the bios then check the cooler if it's clean... if you still reach high temperatures check thermal paste on the cpu.

I too am intereted in the outcome of this, the Pentium T4200 is on the compatible list for our Aspire 5315 (see p115, post #1149) ... has that been confirmed? If so why does the T4500 present issues especially with windows 7?
has anyone got the T4500 working perfectly?

I can get my hands on two t4500s for pretty cheap, but dont want waste my time if they wont work!

Hey!In the past I tried to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS but I couldn't.Hopefully yesterday I manages to install it!Now I run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bits and it is very good! The tricky thing was an option during the installation. From what I have seen until now T4500 is very "special".It worked with Vista,I couldn't get it work with Win7 and I managed to fix the problem in Ubuntu.
It is very confusing but I guess it works!

What kind of LCD is it? I also want to afford such, but it is unclear what kind of resolution should be (1920x1200 or 1600x1200). On Ebay a lot of different 15.4 LCD's with 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 res (dell, sharp, samsung, etc..) and it is unclear exactly what will come up.

Hello everybody, just wanted to ask a question... I've got an eMachines E510 which is like a stripped down version of the Aspire 5315. The fact is: I've upgraded from a Celeron M560 to a C2D T7100, which I've been using for two years now. Today I've installed a C2D T6600 and almost everything works fine, except the fact that I think my laptop doesn't recognize the right temperature.

During this time of the year my T7100 reached 40-45 C surfing the internet and listening to some music. Now with the T6600 HWmonitor and Spaccy say that I'm reaching 50-55 C. But touching the laptop I feel that this reading is wrong, everything is cooler than before (with the T7100), and in fact RMclock reads a temperature between 34 and 39 C. Only problem in this is that I can hear the fan working accordingly to the higher readings. And this happens both inside Windows 7 and while navigating the BIOS menu.

I've already got the latest BIOS version (1.45), do you guys have any suggestion? Thank you! :)

EDIT: Aida64 stays in the middle: Speccy/HWM 54; RMClock 37; Aida 45

    TLDR version: Two things.

#1: I upgraded my 5315-2713 from a T1400 to a T8100. I already had the latest BIOS so it just worked. Thanks!

#2: Shouldn't the upgrade instructions in the second post mention thermal paste?

    Long version.

170 pages! Thanks everyone! It was a lot to go through because I was genuinely surprised how many different processors can be installed in the Aspire 5315! A couple of other message boards were full of (ahem) full-of-stuff naysayers stating that "it isn't worth it" and "it is too hard" (really?!!?) and "I charge $50 just to look at it" and "Acer says only 530/540/550 mobile celeron so give up." That last spot is weird since mine came with a T1400.

I have an old Thinkpad T61 that came with a Penryn 3M T8100. I upgraded it a year ago with a T9500 and had the T8100 laying around. There was a big deal between earlier T61 having Merom boards and newer ones being Penryn boards - cooling errors digital/analog temp sensors, etc, other stuff.

This Aspire just inherited the T8100 without much thought.

So other forums/threads are rather picky about thermal compound. Genuine question... shouldn't that be in the instructions? http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth/int/ss/intel_app_method_surface_spread_v1.1.pdf

My apologies if one of the previous 100 pages covered that.

I have upgraded my Aspire 5315 with T8100 cpu.

I'm using Linux and i have 2 issues.

    1.-BIOS not support VT.
I have fixed the warning putting some modules in the backlist
    blacklist kvm
    blacklist kvm_intel
    blacklist kvm_amd

It's possible patch the BIOS to enable VT, but I not use it.. so blacklist is ok for me.

    2.-invalid bios _pss frequency

I receive this error during the boot up, and I don't have any idea about how fix it.

Any help with the second issue?

I have the Bios 1.45 from ACER Europe.
Booth sites has the version 1.45. I assume that is the same bios.
The Bios can be patched using this method

But I think that not made sense for me, because currently I'm not using virtual machines.

I'm more interested in the second issue.

Ok, the issue is related to CPU scaling, the CPU is allways working at 2.00 GHz
