I can't find the 1.42 bios either. Anyone had any luck locating it? I'm still using 1.33 and can't wait to get away from the sound issues.
-
Well, i'm running v1.42 without any problems that i had with v1.40 in the past...
I recommend to stay with v1.33 until v1.42 is released...
What I discovered is with v1.33 BIOS doesn't have the SLP1 String for OEM activation with Windows XP... v1.40 and v1.42 does have SLP1 String
, but i don't know about v1.34
...
I know this OEM activation may be treated as 'illegal', but i can explain how implement into our Acer 5315's... -
the only time you need the SLP1 is durring inital installation isn't it??
that might explain why i never noticed.... -
Windows checks SLP String everytime boots, if doesn't exist or has changed WinXP ask you to activate it... That's why with v1.33 WinXP tell me "You have 6 days remainging to activate", because don't have any SLP String...
-
because i never got a message like that using 1.33 -
Check your SETUPP.INI in I386 folder of XP CD, if PID=XXXXXOEM, then you have an OEM CD, if i'ts PID=XXXXX270, you have a XP Corp and this not applies to you... You need to replace 7 files (including SETUPP.INI) for the Royalty OEM Activation...

Hey guys, wanted to say awesome forum. Thought I was stuck with the Celeron until I found this. I have 2 questions though. Where are people obtaining the Bios 1.40 and 1.42 updates, as I can only find the 1.34 on the Acer site. Also, am I correct in saying the the T8300 is the fastest, most efficient, 100% compatible processor for the 5315? Cant seem to find any benchmarks for T7X00 and T8X00 processors. From what Ive heard in the diff posts is that an T8300 was confirmed to be working, but does it have the same issues as the T9X00?
-
BIOS 1.42 has been officially released so there is no point of this post. You can find the BIOS here.
Nevertheless thanks go to @elbubi, @BigO and @hoggie, not ACER -
-
i've not recieved any info about the T8300 or T8100 suffering heating issues,, and i'm sure they would post about problems here... you could send PRIVATE MESSAGES to the two persons i've credited w/ reporting on the T8100/8300 cpus and ask them directly ( zedoctor was one of the users)
it also sounds to me like you are looking at the PAN-AM site for BIOS files.. the american site is NEVER up to date...
support.acer-euro.com
that's where most everyone here gets thier drivers and BIOS files... the source of the Ver. 1.42 BIOS is confidential.... but i see ATG put a link up
(good job ATG,, i love the disclaimer BTW)

I emailed this site http://www.directron.com/laptopcpu.html
about heat issues with the T83xx/T81xx.
and all they say on this is " on some of the smaller laptops the GPU is in close proximity on some mother boards to the CPU. This has been a problem with some of the older laptops. But with today's technology this issues should have been resolved in the BIOS (fan speed and cut-in temps).
A few manufacturers have BETA BIOS updates but these are BETA so may not be correct at the time or functioning to their correct specification"
just a mobile CPU retailer covering his behind me thinks

offtopic: Currently rewatching "Coupling", the TV series..@hoggie you're near to London right? The tickets for London from here costs like 20euros..wanna grab some beers? I have to take my laptop and write instead of speaking though, coz I suck of speaking English..no practice
How about Susan's? -
great idea -
i agree hoggie... just doing the CYA routine...
i think the CPU and GPUs are actually located close together to allow the use of one HEATPIPE leading to the fan exhaust...
they try to make it sound like a design problem.. when IMO it's actually a design solution... reducing the amount of HOT METAL inside the PC... -
offtopic: I'm not kidding
Currently, I have some stuff to do, but maybe in november/december I can come over for a weekend or something
-
will look forward to it -
last offtopic: OK I'll let you now...but I'm warning you it will be more drinking than speaking coz I REALLY suck of SPEAKING English..
-
no worries

Just wanted to report that the 1.42 BIOS made my temperature readings correct again using coretemp ! Yay !
Using 1.34 i was getting temps about 10 11 degrees Celsius.
-
-
i''d go w/ a T8300 personally... i've yet to see anyone complaining about problems running a T8300... and i'm pretty sure we have a few members who have done that upgrade...
as far as the BIOS goes... don't assume anything... acer has the best BIOS version yet for the 5315 (ver 1.42) and they won't release it.... but it is out there
-
once again we are faster of the mark than ACER.
thats one more victory for us. -
BTW:1.42 is on ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_5315/vista/Bios/
James -
LOL... i guess they got the message
-
I guess they did..I edited my BIOS post..
-
this is a good site if you want to buy new cpu's
the link should also go on Krazy's page.
its mostly European retailers.

Night mate see you tomorrow

Thanks guys for all the feed back. Im going to go for the T8300. Ill let you all know how it goes. I know the bios doesnt allow for over clocking but im currently running 2GB of Crucial DDR 533. Does anyone know if the new processor will force it to run @ DDR 667 or will the bios force the DDR 533. Im hoping I wont have to go out and get the DDR 667. Also, does anyone have any suggestions for a low heat high performing HDD with at least 200 GB? Thx again for all the feedback guys.
-
as long as the RAM is PC5300 spec, it will run at 667... however if the RAM is PC4200 (i think that the spec for 533mhz) then the CHIPSET will keep the ram at the current clock speeds.....
i know my 5315 came w/ pc5300 RAM even though the CPU limited the RAM to the same speed as the FSB of the CPU which was 533mhz
i'd look for a 320g 5400rpm HITACHI HDD,,, but you could gain a little in seek times by going w/ a 7200rpm..
you may wanna post that HDD question in the Hardware and Upgrade FORUM
but advice is stick w/ hitachi HDDs,,, i've yet to RMA a Hitachi... but other brands i'm very famiular with thier RMA procedures -
hello again folks im thinking im thinking of buying this.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/CORE-2-DUO-T...ryZ86711QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Would this just drop in, ive got a Aspire 4315 with 965 chipset. bios is 1.08 i think.
The chip can support 800mhz fsb but, am i right in thinking the chipset can only support 667mhz? -
the CHIPSET supports 800mhz for the CPU but only 667mhz for RAM
the T7300 will work fine in that model
just drop in and reboot...
maybe a BIOS update if you haven't already done that...
but that's all you need -
Thx again bigO, think ill try w/o bios updates first cause im scared.
hopefully my next post will be showering you hoggie and krazy with praise.
You guys are the bang for buck masters.
Next youll be coming up with a way to mod x3100 into a x4500 using just, a thumb tac and some unicorn tears -
but i recommend upgrading the BIOS to the new 1.42 acer released it today
i've been running it for 2 weeks... very good
just download the file from support.acer-euro.com
and use the WINFLASH version...
i've used it 50 times or more.... with NO PROBLEMs... but to be safe.. after downloading and unziping the file... then reboot in safemode... and use the winflash from safe mode -
Was just kidding m8 I know the x3100 can only get better with drivers
I thought the 1.42 bios was only for 5315 not 4315? -
my bad... i forget that not everyone has the 5315
have you checked the acer site today for new BIOS files... they relased the 1.42 yesterday.... they may have released others too..
i'll check w/ ACER source and see if they have a BIOS update in the works for your model -
Your right 1.42 is for only the 5315. It's already gone from the site
I posted.
You have to be carefull with bios ups and be sure you have the right one.
One wrong or bad flash can toast a computer !
Also you should not upgrade a bios just because a new version is released.
Only flash your bios if you have problems.

worse comes to worse.. i'll build a PIC programmer... buy a replacement blank BIOS and load the BIOS the very old fashioned way of loading a HEX FILE into the new chip then remove the dead one from the mainboard and solder the replacment back in its place...
one thing i'm not is scared of technology.... i can solder surface mount chips with an $8 radioshack solder iron... but that comes from years of experience and buliding custom smartcard readers/ unloopers and other sattelight hacking tools that used to cost $5000 for $50 worth of parts..... getting the HEX files to program the chips was the hard part...but from that i learned so much about programming ATMELs and other EEPROMS which is all a BIOS chip really is....
but thanks for the warnings, advice, and concern... i just moved past the fear years ago -
I've been programming computers since the C128 and amiga days.
I think before I type, a lot of people come here for help and know little about computers.
James -
heck back then at age 10 i installed a reset switch which would allow me to recover from a system lockup w/o erasing the info stored in memory... basically allowed me to do a warm boot w/o clearing RAM.... so i know where you are comming from
and i totally agree about people comming here looking for answers (especially when they have not even tried to find an answer by themselves)... i love to just post a link to a google search results page and tell them the answer is there if they really want to find it -
5315's/4315's BIOS is socketed os soldered?
I had compared my 5315 with the 4315 from my girlfriendthey had the same Wifi card (Atheros 5007EG) BUT 4315 have only one antenna
... whit my 5315 i can reach in my home about 8 networks... but with 4315 only one or two... So bad!
Also, may be interesting if anyone has changed the Atheros Zydas WifiCard, i had read in this forum someone installing the newer Intel Centrino Card (4965AGN) and have great results... But may be useful if anyone changed this Atheros and show his results -
Atheros has a BGN card that seems to kick intel's butt in signal streght and reception
i highly doubt anything other than the CPU is socketed.. sorry to say it.. but that's the way it is
see the EXTERNAL ANTENNA link in the STEP BY STEP sticky... just a thought -
Is the Atheros 5008? Also, my question of what is socketed or soldered is about BIOS EEPROM not CPU...
-
i understand the queston... the answer is NOTHING IS SOCKETED except the CPU...
the bios is soldered
and yes the 5008 is the Atheros i was refering too.... when combined with a router that is based on an ATHEROS RAIDO chipset.. (some DLINK N routers) the ATHEROS blows any other combination of WIFI adapter and router out of the water -
The Atheros in mine picks up about 15 wireless signals, a few Dlinks and a
lot of 2Wire ones.
The ram and wifi have sockets too ! )
Bios 1.42 is back at link I posted.
James -
the RAM and WIFI use SLOTS similar in form to the old P3 CPUs so techincally they are not SOCKET interfaces.. they are SLOT interfaces
