Basically the 9600 has a solder fault (the GPU is not making contact with the MXM PCB). A reflow involves re-melting the solder balls below the GPU - a simple oven can do this, but a proper reworking station has better success rate.

However, if the card is still under warranty, send it back.

Uninstall the driver in safe mode, and install another version.

Hi .NetRoller, I installed the 4965agn but haven't tested it yet because I had to send my Intel 320 120gb ssd back, as it kept making a stupid clicking/chirping noise, sounded like a quite hdd or fax modem haha.

My question is should i bother installing the extra antenna they gave me?, if so how do i do that?

Oh and have u ever experienced weird noises from the ssd, and it was definitely the ssd because i tested it on different machines and made sure i put my ear up to it to make sure, the intel app said it was working perfectly but i sent it back for replacement anyway, because i checked loads of forums and they said it should be 100% completely silent.
    Regards.

@samuelvega: Presumably the 8400 also failed then. (8400s are extremely prone to failure.)

@JIC_E7: The 3rd antenna doesn't really matter for a 4965. (It would be important for a true 3x3 MIMO card, like the 5300.)

No idea about the SSD - never owned one, they are prohibitively expensive in Hungary.

A mainboard issue will never cause graphic glitching in MXM systems - especially not one that only occurs upon loading the Nvidia drivers.

Both the 8400M GS and the earlier (pre-2009) 9600M GT chips are Bumpgate-affected, which can easily cause these symptoms.

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/7682/acer77201.jpg actually looks like a dead or improperly soldered VRAM chip, another common failure mode for 9600M GTs.

    Hi,

I have the same laptop as yours. I bought a 9600m GT ddr2 card. But I get a black screen all the time. I can hear windows loading.

How did you get yours to work. Any suggestion?

    Thanks.

Sounds like you have a card that's not for Acer, probably has a BIOS from other manufacturer. You can replace your card with the one for Acer or you can perform a blind flash.

I can confirm, the LG Philips LP171WU3 (TL) (B1) 1920x1200 WORKS perfectly and 100% Ok with Acer 7720G.

I buy this one on Ebay :

LG PHILIPS LP171WU1-TL A2 17" WUXGA DALLE ECRAN en vente sur eBay.fr (fin le 19-févr.-12 22:47:11 Paris)

When i open the box, i was furious  , because it's not "the good one".
    i received the LP171WU3 (TL) (B1).

And the first time i fit it into the screen case, and want to put the LVDS harness connector, erm..... i think it's not the good LVDS connetor....
But eheh.... seems to be the same

I retry, very gently to put the connector to not bend or break the connector... but no success :(

Retry... Pushhhhhhhhhh... YES ! N-e-v-e-r seen that before
i need so much force to plug it ! scary !!!

But since 10 years of Laptop repair or upgrade, i repeat, never seen sooo
much force to plug the LVDS connector !

I've experienced the same with the LP154WU1 in my 5720G. Evidently LG uses a slightly different, thinner connector than AU Optronics.

About the chip: Search for "MX25L512*" on eBay - the asterisk is important, as there always extra letters after 512.

about the tv tuner card, i have the same one in my acer 7720g and there is a little port (a little like an Ariel port or RF port at the back of a tv) on the far back right side that connects to an antenna like device that came with the laptop, tried using it once or twice but would rather watch tv off my xbox lol

@JIC_E7: That port is only present of machines that originally came with a TV tuner. On originally tunerless models, its place is blocked up with plastic.

I'd thought perhaps some sort of hybrid antenna could be fitted instead of the wireless one present at the moment......silly me.

hmmm wonder if I can get help with this one, i bought an intel 320 ssd 120gb and installed it in my acer aspire 7720g. I started hearing a sort of buzzing/ chirping noise kinda like the noise you would hear from a normal hard drive but much more electronic, a bit like an old 56k modem lol. I presumed something was wrong with it so I put my ear up against were the laptop is and it was definitely from the ssd.

i also took it out and tried it on several computers and laptops, both internally and externally. I sent it back to the retailer and told them there is a fault with the ssd. They checked it and tested it and it turns out there was a fault so they sent me a replacement. I installed the replacement and little to my shock it was exactly the same except slightly quieter.

I then rang intel and they told me that they have never heard of such a thing and to send it back to the retailer immediately as there is definitely a fault. I sent it back and same thing they said there was a fault. I am now on my 3rd ssd, and guess what, exactly the same....

I know it must be really rare for it to happen, but I have my 3rd ssd and cannot be bothered sending it back, because most likely the same thing will happen haha, has anyone got any suggestions? Anything I'm missing here, I am pretty sure they should be silent...am i just that unlucky?

    Thanks in advanced

Are you sure you are dealing with genuine Intel SSDs, and not some kind of couterfeit? I'm starting to suspect that there are micro-SD cards or some other fake behind the shiny Intel covering, instead of the usual SSD PCB.

No its definitely genuine intel retail product and not the cheaper oem or a fake, the serial numbers i checked and are genuine products, plus its from ebuyer, which is the biggest online computer retailer something like best buy or whatever they are called and all the products are genuine.
oh and the ssd works perfectly fine, its extremely fast and in windows index it says 7.7 for hard disk performance, and on the intel ssd toolbox program, it says its running perfectly fine, everything is optimised and running 100%.

I just cant figure it out...

Ah oh tomrad I will do, I had to take the hard drive out today and then reinsert it into the laptop, for some reason I got the blue screen of death and the computer restarted, only now it could not see the hard drive at all.
Thankfully it worked after I took it out and reinserted.

You probably had a different VBIOS then. But with a pseudo-MXM card (no true MXM BIOS is known for the 3650), the risk is always there.

The 7720G needs no flashing to take a 9600M GT. You are confusing it with the 5920G.

Phase one is almost complete with a fresh install of seven. 4 gig of ram going in tomorrow. Next up will be the black keyboard, ssd and new HD combo, Bluetooth module and almost top spec processor. For some reason win 7 looks sharper and clearer than vista did on this machine.

hello from greece everyone, what a topic!
so much knowledge concentraded here, omg! :p
i registered just because of this topic.
    so,here is my noob question, my 7720g has inside an nvidia 9500m gs graphics card ,wich is this one ;
it died pretty quick, and i read that this happened a lot with those acer laptops.
i now decided to fix it and i think i will buy the one you all suggest ,a 9600m gt,512 mb,ddr3,i have found this one
    [IMG]
i think it is the right one, dont you think?
    also here is it's specs;

i allready bought a wrong card once :( (i know what you think, and yeah ,i'm pretty useless when it comes to gadgets) so i try to make sure,is this the one you are all talking about?you think it will fit with that minor mod for the heat sink and the modded drivers you are talking about?

    EDIT
actually, now that i am looking closer, mine is almost identical with the 9600??
that means maybe i dont even need the heat sink mod? does that make a differnce in any other thing?

    EDIT2
Omg,i read the whole thread and i see that the 9600m gt is a card that you concider that it is ALSO known to have problems ? maybe i should try to reflow my old 9500m gs first? how can i tell if a 9600m gt is pre-2009?
am i asking a hell of a lot of questions in my just first post? :p

My 9600M GT works fine without any kind of heatsink mod, no problems with cooling since I installed it. Also, I had absolutely no problems with this card, performance was flawless from the start.

A little off-topic... What do you guys think, if I would want to sell this upgraded 7720G, how much could I get for it? I'm not saying that I'm selling it, it's just a thought ;)

Not much more than a stock one. Mods don't matter much in used sales.
