@spyros: It can use any video codes you have on your system. So, if you have ffdshow or another H.264 decoder installed, then MPEG-4 should work.

Confirmed: After NVIDIA 257.21 Drivers for 9500M GS Series you will have problems Decoding (CUDA) H264 HD Movies (720p/1080p) ... so if you want to have a great playback download the v257.21 Drivers, so no hope for Windows 8, maybe upgrading the defact GPU solve the problem.

So from what I have read on this fantastic thread is that I can 'just' plug in a GeForce 9600M GT in place of my 8400m GS, without a need to modify my bios or do anything else?

I love my Aspire 7720G and want to use it for my son to play World of Tanks with a half decent FPS.

is this upgrade as easy as it sounds?

Yes, the 7720G can take a 9600M GT fine with a stock BIOS.

    hi all!
I just got a mint aspire 7720-6182 for free (the customer didn't want to pay to put a new video card in it)

some one can explain me the difference between the 7720 7720g and 7720z??

As said, the video card is dead but the computer works well. What is my best bet to upgrage the video card to one that will fit in natively without much hassle. the mxmII card that was in is an nvidia 8400m gs 256mb.

    Thanx you all...

"Z" means a dumbed-down CPU and wireless card. (Non-Z machines have Core 2 CPUs and dual-band Intel Centrino wireless adapters; Z ones usually have Pentium or Celeron CPUs and single-band Broadcom/Atheros WiFi.)

"G" identifies machines with discrete graphics. However, the absence of a "G" in the model number doesn't necessarily mean integrated graphics - Acer didn't use "G" consistently in all markets.

The best simple upgrade is the 9600M GT. The GT 240M from Asus has not been tested in this machine, but it will likely work too. GT 230M and GT 330M are possible, but they require good soldering skills.

    Thank you for these infos!

what is involved in putting a gt 230m? is there a link or tuto on what to do?

soldering skills are not a problem.

keep in mind that my 7720 has absolutely no video, so i'll have to put a card that will work out of the box or a way to start the laptop and being able to operate without video...

i'm in the processs of buying my card from ebay so i want to be sure to get the right model :)

Actually, 8400M GS cards can usually be temporarily resurrected by baking them in an oven for 8 minutes @ 200°C.

The GT 230M requires SMD soldering (specifically, a 0402 and a SOIC8). It is also helpful (though not necessary, I did the flashing on the card itself) to have an EEPROM programmer at hand. If you do have the skills and tools for that, a tutorial is available in the MXM BIOS modding thread.

putting the 8400m gs in the oven was the first thing i tried but nothing has come out of this since...
when i put the card in the mxm slot (after baking), the laptop doesn't power on at all. When i remove it, the laptop start with only the backlit lcd screen on.
Ordered an 9600m gt 512 ddr3 on ebay and awaiting it....

260.89 is far from modern. Try at least series 275.

Why t9300 why not the extra £20 for the t9500? I know its not much difference in speed but the t9500 is the top of the range and the laptop will easily handle it :D

Look for 1.45 "MXM Edition" or "Black Edition".

Use InsydeFlash to install, and the Fn+Esc method to recover in case of failure.

I got my Geforce 9600m today and installed it. I'm having problems though. I get a message about sbios on boot up and a 30 second countdown. Windows 7 does boot up but with much reduced graphics res. Nvidia detects the card but the driver fails to install because of a hardwear incompatibility.

    Please help!

@tigermate: Install the "MXM Edition" or "Black Edition" BIOS.

If that doesn't help, dump your VBIOS using GPU-Z and upload it to ifile.it.

MMM... i checked and here in north america on ebay the t9300 is about 60 usd or so while the t9500 is more that the double at 150-160 usd for a mere 100 mhz more.

if i find a t9500 below 100 usd... i'll check at it more seriously...

    @tigermate..

me too just received my 9600m gt 512 ddr3 and was a direct detect in windows BUT had to remove a part of the heatsink as it is not seating correctly on the gpu. look at that closely to be sure your heatsink is in full contact with the gpu processor as you'll fry it if is not...

Yep my heatsink is in full contact and I've applied thermal paste, twice - the first time I used way too much, wiped it off and re-applied the correct amount. Unfortunately, I'm now getting a black screen about 2-3 minutes after boot up. I'm going to boot into safemode and reinstall the laptopvideo drivers that I downloaded last night.

ok... when i received my 9600m gt it was on a engeneering sample bios not made for production... so i flashed my bios with an acer vbios for the gt 512 ddr3. Now i boot fine but only on the vga driver. tried many drivers but none of them want to install (say no compatible hardware present) tried on laptopvideo2go but no success...

my pci ven info are these:

    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&SUBSYS_056710de

    what should i
do to get it instaslled properly...

when you talk about inf files, is that those on c:windows/inf ??

checked there and i only found nv_lh.inf

Netroller I have down loaded your bios from page 1 of the Acer MXM BIOS Mods and discussion (was: x920G vs. 9600M GT) thread, but i'm a bit stumped on how to load it. I manged to flash to v1.45 via acer because it had an exe file. How do I flash your file?

use winrar to extract the .exe file and you'll find an insyde flash tool inside.

use it to flash the bios you downloaded.

after playin' a little with all that, i found a solution that worked...

that's almost a copy and paste from another forum but that'S what put me back on track..

check your num ID device in (properties vga stardard graphic)
    on my acer 7720G
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&SUBSYS_056710DE&REV_A1
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&SUBSYS_061C10DE
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&CC_030000
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&CC_0300
    (056710DE is my acer vendor)
and take the string in bold very important
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_ 0649&SUBSYS_ 056710DE&REV_A1

after triyng to install official driver, go to C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\xxx.xx\Vista(or win7) 64-bit\International\Display.Driver\
    open ListDevices.txt with notepad
    find line within DEV_0649
    you will see
    DEV_0649&SUBSYS_05731558 "NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT"
add new line with your string like

    DEV_0649&SUBSYS_056710DE "NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT"
    save file ListDevices.txt

    back in explorer
scroll up few line you must see name of file may be like "nvac.inf:"
open this file and find with 0649

    you will go to

    %NVIDIA_DEV.0649.02% = Section005, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&SUBSYS_01211025
    ...................................
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0649.20% = Section005, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&SUBSYS_013B1025

    add new line
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0649.21% = Section005, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0649&SUBSYS_056710DE
repeat for all section to the end
save this file and run setup normal.
during install windows alert it is not right driver , dont worry just click ok
restart and you will now have a detected 9600M GT

    working on Acer Aspire 7720 - 4G Ram DDR2 - Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT 512m DDR3 - Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
    hope this help

    gbrown,

I don't follow you, the file I downloaded was:

    icl50_1.45_black_edition_40.fd

No exe and winrar wont extract it - i dont think it is a compressed file.

    Help!

    hi Tiger!

inside the original .exe you downloaded from acer is a program called insyde flash.exe that will flash all .fd extension.

so right click on the original .exe from acer and choose "extract files" and it will decompress the .exe into a lot of files includind the insydeflash.exe you need.

rply if you need more help

ps. you may need to rename the black edition file to the name of the original acer .fd file to flash

Thanks for putting me right gbrown!

I have flashed the Black Bios but the screen still goes blank upto a minute after windows boots up. In Safe mode and normal vga mode the computer is fine.

    Ant ideas?

@tigermate: I asked for a VBIOS dump, not a screenshot.

Also, what driver version are you using?
