why are you only running 4GB of ram?

yup. if you are going to use the msata as storage and change the stock HDD with an SSD, a stock msata would be pointless as it is more used as a cache due to it's small capacity which is only 24gb. unless you would use the stock msata for other means.

Hey guys, do any of you have peeling of the bottom plastic layer? That is, near the rear vents and the side USB ports, some of the plastic layer has peeled off and revealed a smoother, darker feel underneath. It's visually unappealing but otherwise not much of a problem.

I have the V7 482PG-6662 by the way.

Just got mine in the mail last week. It is awesome! Not having any peeling issues nor backlight issues as mentioned in other posts. No issues at all so far! If anyone is looking to get the i7 version of this laptop, I saw a listing on eBay that looked reasonably priced, about the same as the i5 goes for currently.

Hello all. Im kind of at my wits end here. I just bought this laptop and everything was working fine. One of the 1st things I did was change the power setting so that it does nothing when I close the lid. After I opened the lid back up the touchscreen no longer works. I've tried the hardware trouble shooter, updating intel and nvidia drivers and the touch screen drivers in device manager. Has anyone else had this problem? Any on know of a solution.

Im new to this forums and wasn't sure how to search through the thread so I apologize if this has been addressed before.

    Thanks for your time,
    Joe

I cannot tell if my USA bottom lid is of a slightly different material or not. But that just looks like the plastic has a finish on it, that is peeling. It is not a big enough deal to me to do anything. Most likely I will not peel much more. But it is definitely not supposed to happen. You could look for a new bottom plate online, buy and swap yourself, or call Acer, they will more than likely require you to send the laptop in for repair.

It is easy just unscrew all screws and use plastic pryers ; 5 x Plastic DIY Repairing Cell Mobile phone Opening LCD Screen Opening Pry Tool | eBay
and then remove battery , then remove all hardware (ram, wifi , ssd , hdd, remove screws from motherboard remove heat sink ..
    BUT
B4 u start anything I already did this ... And there is no way to replace keyboard EASILY ! I ve checked you will have to remove the metal what is on top with keyboard .. and that is impossible without damage .. I ordered keyb. from china and they sent me wrong the keys been small .. I've paid 45 pounds .. told them don't want it sent it back and haven't even received refund ! ..

I know someone with this laptop, they've been using it for a few months without problems, but they say it died today when they plugged in an external DVD drive - that the laptop just shut down and now it won't turn on. Does anyone know what happened?

About the keyboard - after Shift's stopped working on mine, i sent it to guarantee repair service, and they got it replaced together with the top cover (that one, with palmrests). And it looks like that's the only way to replace keyboard without damaging the laptop.

Hi, which notebook do you think is better ? This one or ACER S3-392G. I found good review on this notebook on anandtech, where was battery life while surfing WiFi cca 7 hours and it got silver award, which is very good.
But I found on notebookcheck Acer S3-392G, which has got 88% and battery life while surfing WiFi was about 6 hours.
On notebookcheck isnt review of V7-482PG and its uncompaarable with anandtechs review, so I found review for V7-582PG with same specs and battery life was only 4 hours while surfing., which isnt enough for me, so I dont know, which one to pick.

Actually 735 is not nearly as powerful as 750- while it is the same core 750M is has higher core frequency and - most importantly 128bit memory lane while 735 has 64bit one.
As a result there is a significant difference in games - using Bioshock Infinite as an example and notebookcheck's database of benchmarks 735M would average 34fps at medium details while 750M DDR3 would average roughly 52fps while at high details 735M would average 29fps vs 43fps.

If you don't care about gaming performance at all this doesn't matter but it you do play games - don't be led into believing these cards are close because they aren't.

    Source:
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M - NotebookCheck.net Tech
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 735M - NotebookCheck.net Tech

Note that I recalculated average fps for 750M to exclude GDDR5 scores which would artificially inflate them.

I think this question really depends on which configuration of each that you're comparing against.

    The entry level P645 has an i5, 4GB DDR3, 120GB SSD, Intel 4400, and a terrible 1366x768 screen for roughly the same price as the V7 with an identical i5, 8GB DDR3, 500GB + 24GB SSD, NVIDIA 750M, and a nice 1080P IPS panel.

The Travelmate is better suited for business due to the carbon fiber construction (lighter weight), looks (similar to the V7 albeit) and the fingerprint reader. Port selection seems identical to the V7.

If you need the business features + lighter weight, and don't mind paying the extra cost, I would get the Travelmate. For all other intended purposes, the V7 is a much better choice specwise and pricewise.

Wrong, the P645 comes with an i7 configuration.

The Travelmates that I'm looking at is an i5 and i7 version. I'm looking at both i5 versions for the V7 and P645. I'm debating on which one would be more worth the money because they both seem worth the prices. If I buy the V7 I would try to add an mSATA SSD, but the P645 already comes with an mSATA SSD.

The Travelmate I'm comparing the V7 with is the i5 version with 256 GB mSata SSD, 1080p display, and Radeon 8750m graphics. I don't really game much. Most graphics intensive game I might play is Diablo, so I don't know if I would even need the NVIDIA 750m. Also I will not be gaming much in the future because I will be going to professional school next school year, but it would be nice to have a graphics card incase I do feel like playing games.

I'm just wondering if the business features, apparently longer battery life, and more durability is worth the extra cost compared to the V7. I saw a video of someone driving over a P645 laptop with a car and it still worked lol. I'm just a picky buyer and both these laptops seem to have almost everything that I want in a laptop that fits the budget!

I know it does but I would like a bigger SSD than that...

Could you link the price? If the difference between the TM and the V7 is only 200-300$ then I would say it's perfectly worth it since it seems that you're leaning that way and would love the extra features.

Either one is a good choice, and you can't really go wrong.

This is the Travelmate that I'm talking about. It says $1199 but Office Depot says $1115 or something like that.
    Acer | TravelMate P6 | TMP645-MG-6429 | Datasheet

Amazon is selling the i5 V7 for $870 I believe, which is the cheapest I've seen so far. Honestly, I've been going back and forth between these two laptops. I'm just really anxious about choosing my laptop because they're both not sold in stores and the laptop would need to last me about 4 years.

Okay I'll look into the V7 more. What is the battery life you get with your V7? I've looked it up and I've seen people say between 4-8 hours. I would like it if I would get at least 6 hours of battery life in it.

Also, I also wanted to add a plextor mSATA SSD but I don't know anything about handling computer parts. What should I do to add in the mSATA SSD? Should I take it to a store to get them to do it for me?

Well people say battery is this and that but that is not true .. if u not doing anything with laptop it will say 6 hours ..
As soon as you start doing something (internet ,youtube) it will jump to 3.5 h remaining .. Maybe it is because I have it on balanced and sometimes high performance ..
To achieve best lasting batt. you will need to select power saver then turn screen brightness completely down ! I don't think you will get 6 hours.. it will be less I think 4-4.5h

About taking off bottom cover .. It is easiest thing to do .! I trhink this is my easiest , I had much worse disassemble
You just unscrew 17-18 screws and you slightly pry with plastic tool on the back first where bottom and top meets, there are clips so it will be clicking ..
NO NEVER take it to nowhere ! bcos GOD knows what they will take you from laptop nowadays .. !
I would NEVER send it to some PC crap shops or anywhere .. Those people tents to swap HWs and they will give you some crap old .. while they keeping yours.. crafty cnts there !! Do it by yourself ..
I recon you to buy 256GB mSATA SSD they go cheaper and cheaper I purchased mine for 107 pounds
But if you prefer You just keep original SSD what will be once you buy it will be 24GB ONly but there will be just classic HD maybe 500GB or 1TB depends what config. will you buy .. And you can either sell HDD and buy 2.5'' SSD or you can just keep HDD in as original

On a 15" V7-582PG this should be true and pretty accurate. If it comes to V7-482PG, the runtime is much longer. For example, mine can run online monopoly game in browser for about 8 hours with brightness at about 50-55%. Reading with wi-fi on - about 10-11 hours. This is with power settings in power saving mode (a bit lowered processing power, to 75%, and graphics, network and everything else). An external mouse reduces runtime by approximately 30 minutes.
Balanced mode and extensive surfing with brightness at about 80% gets a runtime of around 6-6,5 hours. Maximum brightness and balanced mode while working with photos in photoshop (using 750M for processing) and moving massives of photos - 4-4,5 hours.

battery life depends on what you are running and settings such as brightness, wifi, external devices such as mouse, HDD, etc, internal devices such gpu and cpu, fan control, programs like games, multiple opened programs and windows, etc...

overall, less power use and less programs running means more battery life. with the least functions , you can reach 11 hours with just basic word processing. again, the results vary depending on your power settings and programs used.

This laptop needs to be updated to the GTX 850m ddr3 with a 2014 refresh ;), check out my review on the N550JK by Asus section. The older Asus model N550JV use to have a ddr3 GT 750m and now sports a ddr3 gtx 850m which is almost as powerful as the gtx 765m.

How's the build quality of the laptop? I hear bad things about Acer about their build quality. Do you guys think this will last at least 4 years?

If you could learn to read, you would've noticed that I merely corrected you..

You said that the Travelmate P645 doesn't come with an i7.. but it does in fact have an i7 configuration made evident by the link Oinkers posted. I don't know what "different model" you are talking about as at the original time of the post, he only stated that he was looking at the Travelmate P645 in general.

You should be able to easily get 6 hours of juice out of the V7 doing school work, but as with all things running on batteries, it'll depend on how strenuous you use it. For gaming or on load, I wouldn't expect more than 1 - 1.5 hours on battery. On a sidenote, the battery looked to be easily replaceable when I opened mine up to swap in a SSD should things run amuck after a year or two.

Replacing the hard drive is easy. There's a YouTube video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwRuBO74LeE

Build quality is good, except for the odd placement of the power button and the trackpad. If you take good care of it, this laptop could easily last you two to three years before it starts to really become obsolete depending on what you'll do with it IMO.
