Right, i restarted again, and it crashed on startup. I ran the powermizer disabling tool again, and its been fine since. Maybe the laptop updated and turned powermizer back on, I don't know. Anyway, lets hope it carries on like this!
-
This tool did not work for me. I disabled powermizer manualy in registry editor.
-
Well, as long as your laptop is working
Will you do me a favour though?
power it down fully, then try and boot up from battery and see if it works alright. I wanna be sure that mine was a co-incidence? -
Guys this seems to do the trick for me. I have another problem though. My wireless (Intel 5100) connects only when the signal reaches 5 bars. Any ideas how to fix this?
-
Okay, mine wasn't a coincidence. If you power off the laptop completely and try to boot from battery it just doesnt work. Bad times!
-
I have some findings which might be useful to this issue.
If you access Windows Registry
Under
HKLM/Acer/
You will see Acer PowerManager software implement some sort of Nvidia PowerMizer Control although they are not suppose to.
Manupulating that may solve the issue. -
Haha i would love to try this fix of yours but i sent my laptop off for the third time to Acer just before christmas... still have not got it back >.< i'm guessing there actually trying to fix it this time!!! I don't see why we should have to sit around fixing there mistakes, you should try and contact them with what you have found and get them to sort it out so if anything does go wrong you can't be blamed, and you shouldn't have to settle for a fix that dosn't let you boot from the battery alone.
-
Rezghenth yours WAS a coincidence. Mine didn't crash when booting from the battery...
-
Hello everyone.I have the same problem, but my laptop isn't Acer, its HP HDX 16t
It's really annoying, but i can't find a solution...Can you tell me whats the power managment thing in the HP laptops. Thanks, i hope we will find a solution for this thing...
-
@pmoiseos Its when the laptop has been off for a long while... Would you try turning the laptop off overnight, then booting in the morning and see what happens for me? Really want to get this sorted as I've got some coursework coming up and didnt want to have to mess around with it :/
-
Rezghenth that's exactly how it happened... I shut it down and left it overnight. Next day I tried to power up from the battery out of curiosity but nothing happened. The PC booted normally, Windows loaded normally and worked alright until there was no more battery reserve so I had to plug it in again.
-
Ooh right. Perhaps success then!
-
How about your wireless Rezghenth?
-
The wireless seems to work alright on mine, I've had no problems there, however I did read a review where the guy said his wireless was playing up too, and that he opened up the laptop and the wires going into the wireless card were actually the wrong way round! I'll try and find the review for you, because he posted how to fix it as well.
The problem on bootup keeps happening to me whenever i try bootup off battery, but it's fine when I boot up with the laptop plugged in. I'm wondering if its something to do with vista, as I havent actually installed windows 7 yet. I plan to in a few days, so will see what happens then! Before I do upgrade, I want to burn the acer driver disk, as last time I fresh installed windows 7, it wouldnt recognise the graphics card at all. I'll have a look around for that review for you, Pmoiseos! -
OK thanx Rezghenth
-
Still cant seem to get my acer to work
.
It crashes for sure atleast 4 times whenever I watch a dvd (either from a disc or from an .avi file)
But I can play video game (Call of duty 4) for hours without any problems(besides from a fan that sounds like a thrusting formula one engine) -
@pmoiseos The website with it on isn't selling the laptop anymore, so all the reviews have disappered.
Have a look at this thought. Explains how to sort the poor wireless
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305190&page=3 -
Thank you, Rezghenth. Although I don't have Ubuntu installed it's helpful in a general way.
-
I have been looking for a very long time to find a guide on how to open the back of the laptop and fix this. There seem to be guides for every laptop out there except this one
Can anyone tell me where I can find one?
-
The guy was saying on one of the posts, if you open up the bottom of the laptop the wireless card is next to the hard drive. might be worth opening up that part and having a look
-
Hey, i need help! i cant find any of those reg values in my regedit.. i can get up to the video section then when i look in any of the other 5 sections there are no reg's that match the ones you describe. I also tried the tool and it cudnt find the Reg's.
and to top it off, i literally today got my laptop back from Acer after a month long repair session, they replaced the mother board and said it fixed the problem but it hasn't..
-
no no no, you have to enter the registry keys yourself
-
Thanks Rezghenth, worked like a charm!
I have wireless access now after 4 months!! Btw there is a thread about the wireless problem in these forums. Sorry for posting here about my problem...
-
What do you mean you need to create it? :S I was under the impression there would be a ragistry called "powermizer" that you edit to turn it off
If i need to create it, how do i do that?
thanks
-
Ok i managed to do it, it's working now thanks! I have another problem though, when i installed my windows 7, one of the drive partitions wouldn't show up inmy computer and i could not access it, so i downloaded some software to try anf fix it, but i accidentally changed the partition to the active partition.. Now my laptop is trying to boot form it when it has no boot info on it.. haha. I can't get on to change it back either - just get an "NTLDR missing" error when i boot. I can't fix it in the BIOS and ive tried using the windows 7 cd to run a repair when using it to boot but the rapir dosn't work.. Anybody know how i can change my boot drive back to C:, I have access to a CMD promt window aswell, if anybody know how to do it from there that would be great thanks!

Hello everyone!
I am planning to buy Acer Aspire 5739G. My last laptop's video card (GF 8600MGS) burned becouse of too high temperature when playing games and even when just looking at my wallpaper.
So I would be very thankful if someone owning 5739G could tell me what are the temperatures of GPU and CPU when you play some games and when the laptop is idle? And also, do you use a cooling pad? -
Eadwine did u read this topic or what?
How would you ever consider buying a 5739G, not to mention an Acer laptop at all. I am chocked. -
Hello,
I've got the same problem with my laptop (same model as you guys) and wondered if acer power management is the same as Acer PowerSmart Manager?
I can't find anything named acer power management and wanted to try to uinstall that + disabling power mizer. -
Eadwine I am also chocked. DO NOT BUY THIS LAPTOP!
-
I have got the same problem with this Acer, and i none solved unistalling power management or disabling power mizer. I solved this error removing one of the two ram banks. Both are not damnaged, but they don't work well together and sometime the notebook crashes. If i use only one of them (2gb of ram only) the acer workd perfectly. I did it 4 months ago and right now it didn't crashed anymore. Maybe this is due to a mother board problem or something related to the memory management ( of the video card too).
-
Hey gios72,
I will definitely try removing a ram bank if my laptop crashes again. Right now I have been crash free for 2 days with a powermizer tool program. I gave this program a shot since I did not have the registry files there have been a discussion about earlier in this topic.
The program is called Powermizer Switch if anyone is interested or cannot find the registry files like me. -
Hello
Muo, And also anybody else having trouble with disabling powermizer (the tool did not work for me), just follow these instructions, because the registries DO NOT EXIST you HAVE TO CREATE THEM. I know because i was looking for them aswell then worked out i had to create them myself which is simple and take 5 minutes.
I'll C+P from previously in this thread because the instructions are clear:
1.Open up Regedit and go to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\********\0000\
The *'s will be random numbers. There will be a few of them, pick the one with the most stuff in it.
2.Create the 4 Powermizer keys (these will all be DWORD):
PerfLevelSrc
PowerMizerEnable
PowermizerLevel
PowermizerLevelAC
3.Change the values (double click on them) to:
PerfLevelSrc 3322 (I changed to 2222 to completely disable PowerMizer)
PowerMizerEnable 0
PowermizerLevel 1
PowermizerLevelAC 1
4.Reboot and Powermizer will be disabled!
This does work and you do not need to unplug your ram.
Also if you are thinking of buying this laptop... don't.
In fact ACER are completely useless and spent a total of 2 months trying to repair my laptop without offering a replacement or even a temp. replacement. They did not offer my money back and kept sending it back unfixed claiming it had been fixed. Thankfully, some helpful people here managed to solve the problem. -
Does anyone know if such problems happen only for this ACER laptop, or for other models too? Because I have other ACER on my list, it's Aspire 7738G. What can you tell about this one?
-
Eadwine, my best advise is to read this topic. I can guaranteree you do not want an acer. Im studying computer science and everybody I've talked to, who has had an acer laptop, changed it before planned..
Seamus: oh missed the "create your own keys" thingthanks. I just did a registry search for the files you copied and listed, and they have been created now with this program so I think it is the same thing.
Did you solve your crashing btw? Do u have any problems at the moment such as the one i mention below?
On topic:
Hmm, seems like the little powermizer program fixed my crashing for now. I think so because the laptop used to crash at least 3 times for every dvd i watched on it and now I have watched 3 movies without crash. But it's getting very hot around the power button and top left of the keypad even when I just surf. Hotter than it used to and sometimes the fan fastens up for a short period of time and then goes back to normal. This happens when I am only doing flash apps and the fan's noise is quite loud.
Did anyone try this? -
-
-
Hey, it should be 32 bit.
And Muo my laptop is working fine now although it does get a little hotter than before but it's nothing major. Have you updated you BIOS? I updated with the latest BIOS on the acer website.. Give that a go because they were having overheating problems with other laptops so introduced a new BIOS. If that dosn't work it is possible for you to run the laptop with the battery taken out and just use the mains power.. That will reduce the heating by alot. -
thanks Muo i will give that a try.
-
My Acer Aspire 5739G has the same problem! I have sent it in 5 times, and it's still doing it! I think if we are all having the same problem to report and hopefully maybe a recall on this model!
-
i was wondering if all of you guys has gt130m video card?
mine has gt240m video and does not have crash problem. -
Well, most of us has a gt130m... Searching in the web, i found a lot of forums where people were talking of crashes of this card. Personally i found a temporary solution installing the older drivers 7.15.11.7952, disabling powermizer using the switch, and setting maximum performances to the energy management of the notebook. All of these waiting for a new driver that will be released in next months (i hope so!).
-
I have the 5739g with geforce gt 130m. Bought it back in July 09. The display and video drivers have been crashing since day one. Has anybody successfully solved this problem?
-
Hi aceriscrap,
First, nice name.
Second, if your problem is the same as 90% of the users in this topic then yes, I did solve it.
I have been posting about disabling PowerMizer via a program instead of values and that worked but now the computer gets extremely hot though. But it was worth it.
Browse a few pages back here if you are experiencing the same problem as people in this topic. -
On page 14 somebody said they might recall the laptops if enough people complain. I doubt it. I tried every possible thing i could think of to get them to replace/refund my laptop even to the point where i threatened legal action because they were in violation of the consumer rights act by supplying faulty goods. They still refused. They probably knew i wasn't about to take on a big company
. My point is they won't recall. They probably know there's a problem with the laptops and just won't admit to it because if they do we can force them to replace the models. They don't really care, they have your money and that's that. That's why i absolutely hate acer, they're completely useless and unfriendly.
Anyway, Muo, did you try updating the BIOS to try and reduce the heating problem?
And for everyone else, since i disabled powermizer there has been no crashes. So this is a worthwhile fix (even though it shouldn't be needed to begin with). -
I am having this problem too, GT 130M
How do I disable powermizer? -
Well done Gio72
Had exactly the same problem with my Acer 5739G - total loss of functionality when playing dvds, or doing any high end graphics, even google earth. Followed advice you posted, well done guy. I logged onto the nvidia site and downloaded the latest gt130m driver, released in March 2010, and so far I have watched two videos in full, using fast farward, rewind, - all the thing that would cause it to freeze before. with no problems. Everything is working fine. Maybe early days, but this is the best result I have had. I will keep everyone posted if it goes wrong. -
Hello to everybody, I'm Spanish and I'm speak a very bad english, so excuse me.
Today I was trying to repair a problem with an Acer computer and I found a solution that I think it could be the solution of a lot of people.
"Preferred solution:
Download and install the ATI VGA driver V8.635 (or later).
Short term solution:
Change the ATI Powerplay Settings in Windows 7.
* Click on the Windows icon
* Click on Control Panel
* Click on Hardware and Sound
* Click on Power Options
* Click on Change plan settings
* Click on Change Advanced Power Options
* Scroll down to ATI Graphics Power Settings
* Change the battery setting from Maximum Battery Life to Maximum Performance"
Now I'm working but I'll try it on my 5739g when I arrive at home
(thanks to haasek from http://social.answers.microsoft.com) -
Hi everybody,
I bought this laptop in December, and started having this crashing problem soon after, coinciding with when I installed my Windows 7. I only seem to have the problem when it is charging and I open something with higher graphics, such as Sims3. It's becoming very aggravating and I was wondering if anyone has found a solution, or taken it back and had it fixed.
Thanks...

RE Acer5739G
Dear Sir/Madam
I write to you in reference to the above Laptop that I received in November 2009. Since getting the acer5739g it has been in for repair twice with the same problem and now has once again began crashing anytime any media file is played on it, from mp3 files to streaming video on the internet This problem has occurred while using windows vista32, windows 7 32 and windows 7 64, the problem seems to get worse over time with just a few crashes occurring within the first 4 – 6 weeks and getting progressively worse as time goes on until it reaches a point where any media file causes the Laptop to crash and force a manual restart. Normally this level of crashing usually occurs within 3 months from the last repair. Having researched this problem on the internet I have found this is a far from common problem with this laptop, the shear number of forums and web sites reporting this exact same problem is quite worrying, even more so when I realised Acer refuse to acknowledge there is a problem with this model.
I would like to point out that in less than 8 months I have had the exact same problem 3 times, and It has been repaired the same way on 2 occasions, however I am not willing to simply sent this laptop back to you every few months until the warranty expires and I am forced to pay for the repairs out of my own pocket every few months or purchase another laptop, that to be frank I cannot afford. I am of the belief that this product is not “fit for purpose” as described in the Sale Of Goods Act 1977 I draw your attention to a exert from that act :
A consumer has the right to goods that are deemed to be of a satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and 'as described'. Satisfactory quality implies that the goods are free from any faults or manufacturing defects, safe, resilient and long-lasting, and have a satisfactory appearance and finish
Whether or not Acer chose to acknowledge there is a fault or manufacturing defect with my product is not my concern, clearly with the facts I have outlined above and the massive amount of similar problems from other customers I have found on the internet I feel I am able to prove that this product is not fit for purpose, as such I request to send the faulty unit back to you and be provided with a similar specification unit of equal value, I wish to stress I will NOT accept another Acer5739g model, if you do not comply with my request be assured I will take this matter up with trading standards, I would also suggest you review this matter in light of my comments and consider myself and other customers who are effected by this problem, I have purchased Acer computer components and several laptops from you over the years and I feel very let down that such a large company that claims to value their customers would let so many people down, parting with hundreds of pounds is not something a consumer does lightly and our basic rights should be respected, specifically the right to a durable reliable product that will at least last its warranty period, while I accept that sometimes things go wrong in these instances we would expect the provider to take appropriate action to ensure the customer gets a working product be that by means of effective repair or suitable replacement.
I hope I will not need to take any further action and that my request will be compiled with.
I look forward to hearing from you in due course
