nitro 15" ....took part in a surprise lan party yesterday, we played arma3 for hours and hours, everytime i jumped out to check realtemp, the temps where around 75-80C cpu and 75 gpu, cpu was at or above 3ghz..nice when considering its a 2.5ghz cpu.....BF4 raised the temps quite a bit on the cpu to around 85-90c, gpu to 79c...but still cpu stayed around 2.6-2.7 pretty consistent...and very playable.....bf2 is old and ran perfectly, never any lag or stutter i forgot to check temps

update on sound, i got tired of wearing a headset, so i played without, am actually quite surprised that i could accurately determine where enemies where firing from, as long as its on a hard surface....when i crashed on the couch and had the nitro on my lap the sound was less than optimal...way less

when just surfing and such the cpu will drop to around 800mhz, launching a program like real temp and speed immediately ramps up to 1600-2000...and then back down 800...

i played a mkv 720P video clip, while on battery and it lasted for about 3.4 hr

anyway, i was impressed that this 15" v nitro was able to play everything, i like that heat is exhausted out the back, and not out the side towards mouse or at the guy next to me

    Which one is newer? Really......

All of the Nitro's just came out. So, I would say none of them is newer than the others in general terms. To get the exact manufacturing dates for each individual unit which will vary by unit. That's gonna be hard to get. But, in general terms their all about the same age!

Thanks for this, I was seriously sad about not getting the v15 because of throttling, but it's nice to know that you went ahead and tested things for us ^.^

For anyone who purchased the Nitro from Acer's US website, how long did it take to ship to you?

If you bought it from the Acer site, I would verify your order is not on back order status now being that they just went out of stock their! Sometimes they over count inventory and allow more units than they have to be sold. So, that why even if you bought it when it appeared to be in stock they might have changed your order to something along the lines of back ordered!

    Hey all,

I'm wondering if anyone knows the difference between these 3 models. Newegg has all 3 at different prices. I've compared them on btoh the Acer site and on Newegg. I'm unable to spot any differences.

    VN7-791G-77JJ - $1309
    VN7-791G-73AW - $1399
    VN7-791G-7484 - $1299

    http://puu.sh/ciZUU/da71e00065.png

For the life of me I cannot find any differences between them. I ended up buying the VN7-791G-77JJ but I'm wondering if I missed out on anything by not getting the more expensive units.

Any input would be awesome and much appreciated.

    - 77JJ: 1TB HDD + 256 GB SSD, Win 8.1 64-Bit

    - 73AW: 1TB HDD + 256 GB SSD, Win 8.1

    - 7484: 1TB HDD, Win 8.1

The V15 version must really be in demand! It just came off preorder on Newegg on two of the versions and is reading out of stock! Not only is Newegg out of them the Acer store is too! I was gonna order one of these once I got a refund on something but it looks like even once I get the refund. I will be waiting sometime too order!

I ordered the 15" VN7-591G-75NJ model late Thursday night while trying to work on a project on my 5-8 year old plus desktop. It says it will get here Tuesday. I guess I'm glad I ordered it before they sold out since we still haven't heard anything from ASUS on the G551. I really couldn't wait anymore and I hope I'm getting a good machine. Some of the criticisms on this site worries me at times but I don't see a better option right now.

Hi. I often work in Africa (Niger, very hot country), where i spend the most of my time. I have an external fan pad and i always use my laptop inside, often with air conditioner. I was going to buy this acer N7-591G but i wonder if it's worth to buy the 17' instead considering the better cooling performance (?). The optical drive from the 17' one can also be nice for me because internet is so slow in Africa. I prefer 15' size but i don't mind buying a 17'. At the same time there is this offer, only 800€ until tomorow (+ 140€ refound in games or stuff !!) but with Intel Core i5-4210H ( Acer - Aspire VN7-591G-54WZ - 15,6''Full HD - Intel Core i5-4210H - HDD 1 To + SSD 128 Go - RAM 8 Go - GeForce GTX 860M - Win 8.1 - Noir - NX.MQLEF.018 - Achat/Vente Ordinateur Portable Grand Public | Rue du commerce). Is i7 really required for games ? Is the difference of performance worth it ?

By the way, i hesitate also with the Asus N551JM. Any opinion on this ? Should I wait ? Thx a lot. :)

Not sure what some of your post says? Maybe its a translation goof? But, I in my personal opinion at this point I wouldn't buy a core i5.

Sorry for my non-native english. Thanks for your answer about the core i5. My former question was "does the 17'' (791G) have a significant better cooling system than the 15'' (591G) one" ?. As i'm living in a warm and dusty country, i consider good cooling performances, Dust Defender and optical drive as significant assets.

Regarding i7 vs i5 - if you're using the 860m gtx maxwell in these laptops, i doubt you'd see much performance difference between the two for gaming. You will likely see a bit lower heat and longer battery with the i5

Just ordered the VN7-591G-74SK version. Its suppose to get here Friday. Also, I paid 3 Day shipping on the laptop and Newegg tried to cheat me by shipping it UPS Ground and not UPS 3 Day Select. Since, it would get to me in 3 days on UPS Ground. I quickly contacted them via online chat and got them to refund my shipping fee because if I had choose Super Egg Saver shipping it would have been shipped UPS Ground anyway. Since it to heavy for UPS Surepost. I also kept a record of the chat log in case my $9.99 does not show back up in a few days on my card. So, be sure to check what shipping speed Newegg actually gives you and compare it to what you paid for!

I'm starting to think the GL551 is what were getting in the USA because ASUS thinks Americans are dumb and will buy it anyway. When theirs suppose to be a better model they have released else where

Can I just get the 1TB version without the SSD and put in my own m.2 ssd later? Will the m.2 slot still be available in the 1TB version? Would it just be cheaper to get the M.2 seperately or get the 256gb version? I see plenty of SATAIII ssd's going on sale but no M.2 ssd's..

sure you can add the SSD later. but for the 791G this means a nearly complete disassembling of the laptop, as the SSD is under the mainboard, AFAIR. for the 591G you "just" have to take of the keyboard. for the difference in prices you can buy better SSDs. speaking of the version with the 128GB SSD: you pay 100$, but you only get 128GB. if you buy the SSD separatly, you can get a Crucial M500 240GB for that cash.

It make sense but everyone seems so certain that they were also coming out with a G551 with IPS in the US, I'm not sure ASUS ever confirmed the GL551 and G551 were different laptops and not just different variants released in different countries. Even if they do come out with it in the uS, at this point doesn't seem like it will be anytime soon.

If you don't mind, I have a few questions about your Acer V Nitro. :)

How is the build quality? Any flexing or weak points in the chasis? I heard the display hinge has a tendency to make a creaking noise when opening and closing.

Have you gamed on it yet, and if so, how is the performance? I am slightly worried about the temperatures and any possible stuttering or tearing that may arise.

Your answers will be greatly appreciated. I'm undecided between this or the Y50 which is on sale at Newegg for $989 (i7 version!). Thank you!

I didn't even realize that the $1199 model offered by Acer did not have an optical drive smh. The $1049 model does. I seem to be having some range issues with my wifi, it could be my router but it doesn't seem to extend as far as my other laptop did. Do either of the 15" Newegg versions offer any type of optical drive? I see it listed on the 17" ones but not on the 15".

It's been a LONG time since I have purchased a laptop. I guess it's no big deal now to have them without optical drives. I can also just purchase an external one. I'm still curious as to why the VN7-571G-79YU $1049 model on Acer's website has one. It looks like none of the other 15 inch ones have one. That $1049 model is running the older 840M graphics card though and a slower processor. I was about to send this thing back, someone on this forum talk some sense into me lol.

Soo, i have been reading this thread for couple weeks, and decided to buy the NItro. 15 inch, 591g for 899 euro and i got:

    i5 4210H,
    gtx860m with 2gb
    8gb ram
    FHD display
    60GB ssd + 1TB HDD
    win 8.1

I previously owned Samsung np370r5e, so this is a big improvement.

The laptop looks ant feels very very nice. Tho i like lenovo Y50-70 a little better, because it feels more... how do i say it... feels more solid.
The screen is amazing (i have never owned a laptop with FHD, so it might just be me :)
The keyboard on the other hand is "meh".. just doesn't feel right. The keys are too shallow for my taste. But the backlit compensates for that a little bit.
Right now, writing this review i have couple background programs running (email, browser, uTorrent) and the temperature of the CPU is 41-42 degrees, but it gets to 60 in no time if you start something more intense. For example i installed a game yesterday - and through installation the temperatures stayed around 60-63 degrees C. (The fan nose is really low... i have a logitech cooling pad, and the fans of the laptop were never louder that the cooling pad's).
I haven't gamed on it yet, just tried WoW for half an hour - 1080 resolution ultra settings - temperatures stayed around 70-75. The gpu barely got hotter than 50 (but WoW is a cpu based game anyway).
My biggest concern was wifi. And it has some issues. For some reason it doesn't want to download faster than 5 MB/s.. my previous laptop reached 9 MB/s easy. I hope it's just the driver issue. Overall i had no problems with signal strength. It works just fine in that aspect, but my wifi router is just 3 meters away, so... :)

Conclusion - i love V15 591g. The only negative thing is the keyboard, but i will get used to it somehow :)
I would totally recommend this machine to anyone interested. And it has one big improvement over lenovo y50 - M.2 slot for a second SSD.

I'm getting this laptop for work next week and I'll let you know how it goes once I get it. I'm getting the Acer V15 Nitro from Newegg. i7-4710, 256 GB SSD with 1 TB HD, 16 GB of ram, and GTX 860. They gave me the choice between a Macbook 13" retina or equivalent cost pc ($1299). It's ridiculous how much better the Acer V15 is than the Macbook for the same price, the only thing I'll be missing is battery life, but I'm always plugged in anyways.

I have the Acer $1199 version and I concur, it does look and feel nice although not the sturdiest, the Asus G series laptops feel sturdier but they are also heavier and bulkier. Not a big fan of the touchpad for some reason, maybe it will just take some getting used to. Laptop is very light and easy to carry around. I do worry with it being so thin about overheating it just doesn't feel like much of anything is inside of there. It runs very quiet but tends to get warm fairly quickly, I haven't run anything intense on it yet. Screen looks fine not overwhelmingly great.

I do seem to be having some issues with speed/strength with my router. When I go to the furthest room from my router the signal strength is very low and the download speeds are extremely slow. I recently changed routers so it may just be an issue with the new router. I'm not having an issue with signal strength on any other of my mobile devices in the house though, but this is the only laptop I'm using. My previous laptop that worked well with the previous router is non functional.

Download and try this driver for WiFi
Qualcomm/Atheros Wireless Lan Drivers Version 10.0.0.298 WHQL
From what I've read in the forum the newer driver from that site has fixed the issues for some people.

Really different kind of machine, anyway. But it's not just about battery: with the MBP you'll also be getting a screen of the highest quality and a better OS, imo.

If you want power you made the right choice, though :)

This is kind of off topic but being that the 15" laptops do not come with an optical drive, is anyone here purchasing an external drive? If so is it better to go with a DVD writer or Blue ray writer. I know blue rays used to be super expensive but they seemed to have dropped in price and hold significantly more data.

imho optical drives has lost the race to large capacity haddrives, both 3.5" large drives that can store as much as 8tb on a single disk, and small portable ones using 2.5" drives with 1tb....and if your looking for something like a flash thay too can be had quite large these days....and all 3 are bootable, and since vista or win7 you have been able to install windows from thumb drive/flash cards....

the only time im missing an optical drive is when i buy a game in store, and get dvd's, but given most games these days can be downloaded , i just use the activation code from the software and wait while it downloads....funny thing i installed wolfenstein from dvd's and it took forever, and then afterwards it went online to update, which was a considerable amount of data that needed to updated....so on the nitro, i just let steam web download, and it turned out to be faster that way...updates where already applied

for backups i use crashplan, their software is available for linux, mac , pc you name it....and it maxes out my upload most of the time...but i can then move data between computers where ever i am in the world (granted i got internet)

im very happy with my 15" nitro....most of all im happy i got the one with 256gb ssd...i have OS and steam on the ssd, and everything launches fast, a lot like my stationary gaming rig (3770/780ti/32gb/ssd512)...i did start by putting steam on the hdd, and that launched games ok, but i would be among the last ones to load a certain map...moved steam to ssd and problem solved

I just have add an ssd msata Plextor PX-64M6M M.2 2280 SSD 256 GB . You need format factory 22x80mm. the ssd slot is easy of access on 15'' version, bit harder on 17'' (as mine) where you must disconnect more cables. here you can find intstructions on how to, it is not so difficult. (german language but you just need the video to understand how)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS6eAxTj7MQ&list=LLCgNSH-2iq8pXpnt0RXwNzw&index=5
msata is at 9:17 in the video.
you can move the whole win 8.1 operating system and program from the hybrid hdd to new ssd using paragon hard disk manager 14 very easily, it moves the system partition, creates it bootable, and align the ssd for best performance. I suggest to use this software after trying out at least 10 of them with no good results.

I have the nitro 17 black edition. I'm not satisfied about the screen calibration. I cant calibrate decently to obtain a neutral white, just a pale yellow. I am using an asus external ips screen where colours are very well tuned, white is white. On this notebook, no way to obtain a decent white colour. Any suggestion?

I saw that video too, but I don't understand what the video is talking about, as I don't read or speak German. Is it true that you need to open the laptop through the keyboard so that you could access to the ram and m2 ssd? You can't access to them through the bottom panel?
    thx~

Just wanted to throw this in here.

I've had my V17 Black Edition for 2 days now and I'm pretty satisfied with it. Overall it's a beautiful looking laptop and has plenty of power.

The screen is very nice. It does have a very slight yellow tint to the whites and some backlight bleed. I have not attempted to adjust yet. On my main PC I have 2 27" Acer IPS screens and a 27" Korea w/ a Samsung PLS Panel and the screen in my V17 is pretty comparable.

I'm dual booting Win 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04. Works great for both. Only issue I had was with the trackpad on Ubuntu. It did not work at all. In case anyone else has this issue to fix it change to the newest mainline kernel.

This is mainly a work machine so I don't plan on playing games much. However, I threw BF4 on it and it ran great with medium/high settings. Temps stayed around 80C

So far my biggest issue is with the trackpad. I really don't care for it. I find the texture too course so it can be difficult to slide my finger smoothly. Along with that there is a very noticeable dead spot when you first start to slide your finger. It's like when you first start to slide your finger it takes a half second for the cursor to respond. This is the same between Ubuntu and Windows so it seems hardware related. It drives me nuts when I'm trying to make fine movements. It becomes very noticeable when 2 finger scrolling on a web page. It is also not very sensitive to taps. In comparison my Dell XPS 16xx I'm coming from had a glass smooth trackpad that was very sensitive. It picked up the lightest brush of the fingers and felt very much akin to a modern smart phone screen. The V17's feels like an old resistive touchscreen.

Besides the trackpad issue I'm very happy with it. I'm coming from a Dell XPS 1645 with a first gen i7 and it's a night and day difference.

yes, on all Nitros you have only access from the top of the NB. so you have to take off the keyboard. pretty weird decision Acer made there, but doable in my book.

Thats the flyer from acer singapore. The specs maybe a bit different from other countries but is the price expensive?

Hi guys! I think I have read almost all the thread, but i'm still confuse...I'm an architecture student, so i will use a lot of autodesk and adobe programs (no gaming).
Do you still recommend this notebook? I live in Italy and at the moment we can have V15 and V17 for 1000\1100 euros (16gb and no M.2 SSD). I was thinking to get the V15 but then i've read about better cooling on V17, since i will not use it for gaming, do you think cooling would be a relevant issue for my use?

    thank you
