Just some tidbit I've found (I've ordered 791G myself) lurking.
1 - 791G: this picture http://www.notebookcheck.net/filead..._759Q/Acer_Aspire_VN7_791G_759Q_39_von_41.jpg shows that some 791G has Synaptics touchpad.
2 - 791G : go to driver download, at least in Italy you'll find that there are two BT/wifi driver sets, Atheros and Broadcom... so they do ship some notebook with Broadcom BT+Wifi instead of Atheros.
3 - 571G / 591G : download driver shows three driver set: Atheros, Broadcom and Intel.
Typical ACER.

The factory restore did not help me at all. I'm still getting 0.1-2 MBPS when I move away from my router.
-
Did you try to change settings I mentioned in my earlier post? -
Yes I've tried changing your settings as well as reinstalling drivers multiple times. I will download when I get back home but if I can't resolve this soon I will have to send this back before the deadline. My speeds improve dramatically if I'm a little closer to the router. I get over 10 if I'm right by it but the signal strength is medium and the speeds are extremely low in the room I'm testing it in. -
First one is close to the router and second one is away from the router.Attached Files:

Hey guys. Although I read some complaints about the throttling, I also read some appreciations that it only happened in full load test.
Once I got my V15 (i5 version), I downloaded Origin and jump into BF4 multiplayer (64 player intensive firefight in locker) right away (while the disk is heated due to the download work of BF4). I tested ultra settings and it is pretty playable (28-35). However, in a few minutes, I encountered CPU throttling, and FPS dropped to ~10 (especially when there is a flash bang...). At the same time, GPU temperature seems fine. It might be due to the prolonged downloading work which already heated the laptop a bit. I am also surprised how much CPU power BF4 consumes in multiplayer mode. In addition, I received a warning saying memory is almost full (8GB).
When it cooled down, I tried it again in high settings (I switched between 1600x900 and 1080p several times) and successfully finished one round without throttling. The CPU temp was around 92.
-
I guess this throttling is reasonable? I used a thinkpad (with NVS GPU + i7 duo core) to play BF4 in low settings, and it never throttled (though very hot).
Maybe for BF4 multiplayer, and any multilayer games that require a lot of CPU power, pushing to 1080P with ultra settings is not a good choice. -
Has anyone bought this model:
Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-591G-74LK Gaming Laptop Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2 GB GDDR5 15.6" Windows 8.1 - Newegg.com

Is the display IPS ? -
-
I have a spare RTL8821AE 802.11ac PCIe (from an ASUS VC60).
Can I swap the embedded wifi card with that ? -
@RayJohnson
RSSI looks good near the router but for RSSI of -71 that you get when you are far from it, the speed should be much better than it is.
As for disabling 5GHz band - that has no effect - your router has a separate radio for 5GHz band and there's no interference between the two.
Making it 802.11g only might be helpful indeed - I have no idea why but Intel 7250 has problems on 2.4GHz band too and forcing it to work at 802.11g improves stability (although also defies the point of buying it). The problem with this is actual transfer rates of 802.11g network will not exceed 20/25mbps under good signal conditions so anyone with a faster Internet connection will still be disappointed.
@ConteZero
No you can't - this notebook uses M.2 card format rather than mini PCI Express -
Are there any problems if i change the Atheros chip with a Centrino 6235?
-
Most likely yes - the fact that Intel 6235 will be a mini PCI Express card. You need M.2 factor.
-
These are the two cards that are current available that should work in the nitro
Amazon.com: 7260NGW Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11ac, Dual Band, 2x2 Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.0: Computers & Accessories

and at some point you will be able to buy the Killer N1525 M.2 wireless card. -

Hi guys,
I´ve got my new VN7-791 since today and I am very happy with it. But my display has some backlight bleeding in the right top corner. Does someone have the same problem? Do u know whats to do to fix it? -
Using the download that the other fellow recommended it is a : LG Philips LGD0443
I have tried to play around with the Intel graphics settings to raise the brightness. It helps a tiny bit but its still very dark -
This may have already been mentioned in this thread, but I'm assuming that a USB wifi card is not a good option as a replacement for this laptop? How hard is it to replace the wifi card?

Well, after doing a lot of research, reading through forums, reviews and videos, with a budget around $1000 - $1300 USD, I came to the following gaming/workstation laptop options:
Acer
Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition
VN7-591G-74SK ( Link)
$1,300 USD
MSI
GE Series
GE60 Apache Pro-003 ( Link)
$1,250 USD
ASUS
ROG GL551 series
GL551JM-DH71 ( Link)
$1,100 USD
Lenovo
Y50 Series
59426157 ( Link)
$1,100 USD
All sold by Newegg or Amazon - It's important to get the exact model right, because there are many differences by brands and similar models.
----
First is important to know what is the use you will be giving to this laptop, will it be a replace for your desktop? will you need mobility? will also be used in business meetings? - In my case I am looking for an affordable gaming/workstation laptop, as I work within programming, multimedia, web design, and also like to enjoy a couple games every once in a while, even tough I don't play all the latest games, if in the near future one of the new games attracts me I want this laptop to be able to run it!.
Saying that, I have decided to go for the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-591G-74SK, here my Pros and Cons for each one:
Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition VN7-591G-74SK:
Pros: IPS Screen, comes with 16 GB RAM, 1TB HDD and 256 SSD (SSD really improves things), looks elegant and not too bulky (as I will be using it in business meetings), Back-lit Keyboard, two back ventilation fans.
Cons: Seems people are having issues with the pre-installed wifi card, if that's the case I will replace it with an Intel 7260NGW or similar, that is only about $30 USD more and is really easy to replace. The 1TB HDD is only 5200rpm. Hard to access the battery and replace things as the HDD or RAM.
MSI GE Series GE60 Apache Pro-003:
Pros: IPS Screen, 1TB HDD 7200rpm, DVD±RW/CD-RW (You never know when you need it), Steel Series Gaming Backlit Keyboard (Multicolor), 2x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0
Cons: For almost the same price of the Acer, only comes with 8GB of RAM and no SSD (not sure if in the future you can add it without losing the HDD), only one ventilation fan in the left side. Also looks more bulky and I am not too fan of the "Gaming G Series" logo with the dragon. (Remember I will be taking this computer to business meetings, most of the times with people I don't know, so it is important not to show a mis-impression)
ASUS ROG GL551 series GL551JM-DH71:
Pros: Price, 1TB HDD 7200rpm, DVD±RW/CD-RW, 16GB of RAM, Backlit Keyboard, easy access to the battery.
Cons: No IPS screen, no SSD (not sure if in the future you can add it), only one ventilation fan in the left side, weight, also looks a little bit bulky, not too fan of the "Republic of Gamers" logo.
Lenovo Y50 Series 59426157:
Pros: Price, 16GB of RAM, Backlit Keyboard, thin and elegant.
Cons: Heard terrible things of the non-IPS Screen, 1TB HDD is only 5200rpm, only 8GB of SDD (But could be upgradeable).
---
All of this options include an Intel Quad-core Processor 4710HQ/4700HQ 6MB L3 Cache, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M, 15.6" Screen Size, DDR3L 1600 RAM, SD card reader, HD Webcam, Kensington lock, at least 3x USB ports and standard HDMI.
Of course i have not consider other things as, the speakers (few computers are great on this), the trackpad (I use most of the time an external mouse), heating (is normal for a laptop to heat if you play top spec games), battery (is a gaming laptop, don't expect more than 3 hours and if you are gaming the laptop will perform better if it is plugged in), Brand (You can find great, good, bad and terrible experiences with different models of each one of this brands).
---
So as I always said to family and friends that ask me to recommend a laptop, first ask yourself what it will be used for?!
Really enjoy reading you guys and wanted to share my overview, will be buying the Acer model in a couple days and after a couple weeks of using it will come back to share the experience. -
-
If you check Acer website and even NewEgg specs page , there is no mention of IPS. The 15 inch HD models seem to have TN displays
Acer | Laptops | Models
Only two of the 15" 1366x768 models have IPS.
This is also confirmed by joshva. He has the model which I am looking at VN7-591G-74LK -
Thats why I said is really important that you get the exact model you are looking for, so you know exactly what you are getting. :thumbsup:Attached Files:

I'm going to buy a 480GB M500 M.2 "drive" for my Nitro 791 ( NX.MQRET.007 ), will it fit ?
-
The model I purchased was the Aspire V Nitro VN7-591G-75NJ from the Acer Website. It is no longer available on there wesbsite right now because it is out of stock, but it was an IPS screen with 12GB of ram 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD. ($1199)

Hi all!
I got the Acer Aspire VN7 571G-535R with a full HD IPS Screen 500GB Harddrive and 128GB SSD for 799€. More specifications can be found here: Acer Aspire VN7-571G-535R Notebook i5-4210U SSD Full HD GF 840M Windows 8.1 (I am sorry, it is a German website)
Anyways, I have the same Wifi issues which where reported before. I installed the tool inSSIDer and looked at the RSSI values. I got about -30 close to my router and -65/-70 at the other end of my flat. The speed drops significantly and I only get up to 2000 kbps whereas I get 8000kbps close to my router (which is the optimum I can get from my provider). Unfortunately, my router does not support 802.11ac but only a,b,g and n. I considered to buy the Intel Wifi card mentioned before and exchange it with the existing Atheors one. However, as my router does no support 802.11ac, I am not sure if I would benefit from the change. What do you think? Is it worth trying and will I get higher download rates with the Intel card even though I don't use ac? Are there any alternatives?
Since someone asked for Display information: With HWiNFO I got for the monitor specifications
Monitor Name: LG Philips [Unknown Model: LGD0443]
Monitor Name: LG Display LP156WF4-SPK1 -
Intel 7260 has issues working on 2.4GHz band in multiple cases (mostly because it doesn't seem to be able to deal with interference from other networks) but it always works very well on 5GHz band (regardless of if it's 802.11n or 802.11ac). So if you have a dual band router you are guaranteed to have no issues with 7260 even if you don't have 802.11ac router.
-
Dooh, I do have to work on the 2.4GHz band. My router does not allow me to access the 5GHz band. Any other ideas?
-
It's kinda hard to get around it. Hopefully Intel improved drivers to the point where they are at least stable at 2.4GHz band (but not as fast as it should be anyway). I have tested several version of their drivers as I have an Intel 7260 but I god kinda bored because I was suing 5GHz 802.11ac anyway for daily use.
The problem is that there is not much choice - Intel 7260 has its problems but it's at least widely available. Broadcom card is not as easily available and users also complain about it (to lesser degree though) and Killer M.2 is not exactly available in retail yet (although it is available in some notebooks).
Point being - at this point Intel 7260 seems to be your only way to go.
EDIT: If possible go for 7265 - it fixes an issue with card not waking up from stanby. -
Installed the Intel 7260NGW AC and I'm now getting 18-21 MBPS in my living room. Hard to say if the Intel 7260 will fix the issue for other people.
downloads likes this. -
That's good to hear. It's a high end notebook and as such it should have been equipped with a 802.11ac card (or at least a normal 802.11n dual band) anyway.

@macknewm On 2.4GHz or on 5Ghz?
As the Intel 7260 only costs about 27€ it might be worth trying. I couldn't find the 7265 though, mabe it is not available in Germany yet? -
have the exact same issue with the wifi card in my nitro notebook. Read through comments and decided to get the 7260. Contacted an eshop selling 7260 ngw ac, and they sent me a list of 7260 models to choose from. Which one is yours?

7260.NGWGC.S
7260.NGWGC.S
7260.NGWG.SR
7260.NGWGC.SR

I have no idea what is the difference.... -
Ah, one more thing: I will mainly use Ubuntu 14.04 instead of Windows 8.1. Do you have any experience with the Intel 7260 and Linux? There are mixed comments on amazon. Some say it works out of the box, other say that they had a hard time getting their wifi to work.
EDIT: If I am not wrong, there is also an Intel Wireless-N 7260 without 802.11ac (which costs only 11€and is also a M.2 card, cf. http://www.itmedia24.de/Shop/DE/Product/Details/3886/1272346/false/ (sorry again, german website, but the specs can be understood anyway).

This is the same model as my one. Do you also find the screen is quite dark? I tuned it using Intel's Display Driver tool for the 4600 and things look sharper now but still very dark. It hurts my eyes straining to look at it after an hour or so -
Oh and YES you will get much higher download rates with the Intel 7260AC even without an AC router. I have an N600 router so wifi N 2 channel and it is much faster than the stock Acer card that was supplied
-
W T F Acer. They probably shipped Full HD IPS screens earlier and probably ran out of it. Now they are shipping 1366 x 768 screens on the same model.
As of now, there is no 15.6" Full HD IPS model that I can buy
I think everyone of you who bought this series should verify if you have an IPS screen and post your exact model numbers and display types if possible -
EDIT: One extra question: was it difficult to open the notebook? I heard from a couple of people that it is not that easy because you have to remove the whole keyboard. I found two youtube videos which described the opening and on those videos it didn't look to hard. Did you remove the DVD burner first or did you leave it where it was? -
I bought the 17 inch version, full hd ips an no wifi problems?
-
-
-
I need to find out if those models are coming back in stock.
Also, if anyone has the non-IPS version of the Nitro, can you tell me how is the display quality and viewing angles. I might still buy it if it's okay.
I was considering the Lenovo Y50 earlier but backed out as I heard the display sucked
