Are you sure it's IPS?
Cause the Acer website doesn't list it as IPS. For other models, the website explicitly mentions IPS

Being I've never had a IPS screen till supposedly now all I can go off of is looking up the screen that my laptop has on that website and it saying that that type of screen is IPS.
-
I think the initial bunch of computers that shipped out were probably all IPS. Once then went out of stock a while it seems they changed the configuration on the website and possibly started shipping some non IPS versions or IPS versions that were not full HD. Acer said there are laptops of the same model number that have different screen configurations.
-
Makes sense. There goes all my research down the drain. I'll now either buy the Asus or the Lenovo and change the screen
-
There still should be IPS versions out there though. The one I purchased it says it was out of stock but should be available in November.
-
I don't think that is the case. Non FHD versions were available from the begging and it's exactly the same situation that we've had with earlier models. As for non-IPS screen - is there actually anyone who does have a non-IPS screen? Because it seems more like an omission on Acer website than anything else.
-
Ok so maybe there were non FHD versions available but that doesn't explain how one model number can have FHD versions and non FHD versions same price and everything. How do you explain this?
1) http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.MQLAA.001 (non FHD)
2) http://store.acer.com/store/aceramer/en_US/pd/ThemeID.35703000/productID.308686600 (FHD) -
I probably can't, but you'd need to correct link no 1 to give me a chance
I was trying to locate a service manual for this notebook which would be useful and would answer some questions about the config (based on FRU) but so far I've been unsuccessful. I'm gonna keep an eye out for one though.
EDIT: I used my "mod powers" to see the link as you posted it. It's all fine now.
EDIT2: I see your point. Either one spec or the other is wrong. One model number equals one config and the same price implicates the same config too, so one description is clearly wrong. Nice job spreading confusion Acer... -
I called up the Acer contact number spoke to an Acer sales person . He didn't seem to know what IPS was but when I explained to him , he said that the website doesn't have a mistake.
Also, joshva got the newer 15.6" model
-
Hey guys, can you do me a favour, please? I noticed that my speaker create a constant random noise while a sound is played. This noise can still be heard until a few seconds after the last "correct" sound from the speaker. It can also be constantly heard, if you plug in headphones. The noise comes right out of the loudspeaker, so it is not a noise from the HDD or something. Can you please check if you experience the same thing?
-
It's kinda dodgy for manufacturer websites to advertise IPS. IPS is a registered trademark for LG. Officially, only LG panels can be advertised as IPS. The "equivalent" Samsung technology is PLS. AUO's is AHVA. Unofficially, everyone refers to all of these screens as IPS, but officially they're not supposed to.
I'm not sure who makes the panels for the V Nitro series. So it could just be that marketing splashed IPS on all their web pages, legal told them they can't do that, and IPS got scrubbed from some pages and not others. -
My 17" does have a LG IPS screen... -

Any word on when the $1199 V15 model is coming to Amazon?
-
The brand new Acer got the following problem: the "system" and "system interruptions" eat up 20-50% CPU when I play game - game lag - it rebook automatically, or stay with "system" consumes 25% CPU.
It might be some driver issue. I am suspecting it is also the wireless stuff... Anyone has the same problem? The WIFI works just fine btw.
And sometimes I got "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" "kernel" stuff... I can't update the driver from NVidia to avoid waiving the warranty.
is this a problem of acer specific driver or the hardware problem? -
-
Has someone tried to download the latest drivers for the gpu from the nvidia website or the notebook doesnt support this tipe of update?
-
It's good to know that you don't have any problems, Good luck, BTW, where did you get the keyboard?
-
You can pull them out using a screwdriver or your finger
-
Updating the driver will not void your warranty.
-
Aha you just switched the position of the keys, that's smart!
-
Can someone please check that? Just close all open Windows which may possibly could play a sound, wait a few seconds and then click in the taskbar on the volume indicator and change the volume to something low (around 5 should be fine). Listen closely if hear only the "bing" or also some noise from the loudspeaker. Thanks

Hi all,
The screen that is in mine is: LG Display LP156WF4-SPK1 Overview - Panelook.com
This is a 300nits screen yet on mine I get 200 nits. Also the reviewer Gaming Laptop Junky had the same problem. Dark screen 200 nits.
I did try to download the latest Intel version but it blocks driver updates from Intels site v Acers. Acer's drivers are old.
really annoyed as everything else is good -
Hey joshva,
Panelook.com says it's an IPS LCD. How are the viewing angles. Will you be able to post any pics of the viewing angles ?
Can you provide me the exact model number you bought and the link if possible.
I am looking to buy a laptop this week itself.
Thanks -
Hey All! I just ordered the V17 last Friday and it will be here on Tuesday. I ordered model # VN7-791G-73AW. $1399.99 USD on Newegg.com. I can't wait! I will check back in once I get it and check it out. I am curious about the WiFi adapter. I keep hearing about problems with it. I did notice that on the Acer website under drivers for this laptop they have two drivers for the WiFi adapter. One for Atheros and one for Broadcom. I wonder if they went with a Broadcom after all the issues with the Atheros came about? Specs as follows:
Windows 8.1
i7 4710HQ
16gb 1600mhz ram
Nvidia GTX 860m w/ 2GB GDDR5
256GB m.2 SSD + 1TB HDD
I wen't with this laptop for a few reasons. I really like the more simplistic design and overall appearance of the laptop. It looks more professional rather then all over the top like say an Alienware. The price point was spot on to. $1400 for a 17" laptop with a Maxwell 860m and a 256gb SSD is pretty good if I say so myself. Also, it appears to be a little more convenient with portability compared to other 17" laptops with the same specs.

Hi,
Here is the Macbook Pro Retina 13 IPS side by side with the Acer V Nitro. Both are at max brightness with power plugged in and adaptive brightness off. I would hesitate buying this computer till we hear if others are having this issue:
I purchased this one:

I finally got my V15 Nitro (15.6", 256GB SSD, i7-4710u, 860m). The performance is fantastic, especially coming from my previous Acer M5 with 640m LE. I'm loving the computer, it's fast, sleek, super quiet. However, I do have a few problems that I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing:
1) The computer constantly forgets my second display settings (only display on external monitor) whenever coming out of sleep. My last acer didn't have this problem, and it was 8.1 as well.
2) The headphone jack makes a buzzing sound through my speakers whenever the computer is asleep. As soon as I wake up the computer, the sound stops.
Anyone else experiencing this? -
I bought this over the Lenovo Y50 because of the "IPS" display as well. If this is IPS, it's the worst I've ever seen. Admittedly, it still looks better than the Y50's TN screen, but the viewing angles aren't great, and the screen overall pales in comparison to my wife's Acer (IPS, glossy, touchscreen).
-
nice picture
I was thinking to purchase this laptop ,but the screen seems very dark with max brightness, thats put me off. -
Yep and the hinges of the screens are at the same place btw. The Macbook is not in front of the Acer. It just looks that way because it is so much brighter. I am phoning Acer tomorrow, the thing is, there are lots of other reports of this, so i don't think it is just mine
-
Thanks for the side by side comparison. I knew that the IPS on Acer wouldn't be of the same quality as a Macbook but this is appalling. The only other possibility was that this isn't IPS but your panelook.com link says otherwise.
I was planning to buy the same model btw. Now I think I'll just get the Y50 and switch the display.
Do let us know what Acer has to say about this.
I have a suspicion that the initial models had good displays which gave them good reviews for black friday sales. -
well, IPS by itself doesn't guarantee top notch quality. but in the NBC-review, the same scrren had 300 nits. that is, what is kinda weird.
Acer Aspire V15 Nitro (VN7-591G-77A9) Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews -
I don't trust those reviews. Check out this review. It is very in depth and he measures only 200 nits as well on the same screen. Same as me. I don't think it is just me.
"The readings say ... not more than 200cd/m^2 brightness level. It might be something with my measurements or variance in the panel itself, but I saw 300cd/m^2 brightness displays and they are brighter than this one"
Acer V15 Nitro Black Edition (VN7-591G) Review -
Just got mine (791G), the screen is awesome.
Windows report it as LGD0469 (LP173WF4-SP1).
Wifi card is the usual Atheros. -
so
791G use LP173WF4-SP1
591G use LP156WF4-SPK1 -
That seems to be correct, AFAIK. And the panel of the 791G has been described as very good in every single comment or review I have read so far.
-
Not mine or Junky's. Did you see my side by side image a couple of pages back?
I'm calling Acer tonight and will let you know what they say -
Wifi working fine for me; got 110 mbps down and compared to someone's mbp which got similar speeds.
Will try at home later on.
Anyone know how to keep the backlit keyboard off? Whenever it comes out of sleep, the keyboard lights up. -
Any word on when these are coming to Amazon?
EDIT: Nevermind, I see they were added today. -
I updated the Geforce drivers on my 15" Nitro. You have to disable driver signature enforcement before doing it - and you might have to get a modified .inf file for the drivers as well.
Here's more on how to disable driver signature enforcement: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorial...abling-signed-driver-enforcement-on-windows-8 -
And the description says IPS display.
-
What's your exact model number ?
Can you provide a link ?ssalgadom likes this. -
Tried wifi at home and got the same speeds as the other laptops in my house. Laptop is a floor above the router which I estimate to be about 9-10 feet. Thankfully wifi works great for me.
Also how does one check the model number of their IPS screen? Would be willing to share mine (my monitor's brightness is great). -
Do you mean the display? The hardware ID in system is LGD0443. The comp is 571G-789S.
-
try
HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information, Analysis and Monitoring Tools
what is your laptop gpu? is it 840m? -
Anyone try putting Windows 7 on one of these yet? I get mine tomorrow and I am curious as to how it would go, being the Acer Website only has drivers for Windows 8.1...
-
Thanks.
Mine is a LGD0443. Looks great to be honest. -
I'm thinking of buying either the 15 or the 17 inch version of the Nitro Black (860M), but I'm really undecided between the two.
From what I've read so far, the advantages of the 15 inch version are better portability and a slightly lower price. But it seems to me that most people think the display is better in the 17 inch version, or at least more consistent (i.e. there seem to be complaints about the display from some of the people who've bought the 15 inch version, but no complaints from those who have the 17 inch one).
From your experience, how much (if any) do you think the difference in display quality is between the two versions, and do you think it makes up for the higher weight and bigger size of the 17 inch one? I don't need to carry the notebook around every day, but would have to move it from one apartment to the other around twice a week.
Thanks! -
I think I remember reading a post earlier in the thread stating that most of the Windows 8.1 drivers on Acer's website were working fine in Windows 7.
