    Hey guys,

I rang Acer about the display. As expected the rep was clueless and said just to return it.

I will do that. A bit sad, i had high expectations.

So I received my Acer V17 Nitro Black Edition (Model #VN7-791G-73AW ). Here are my thoughts.

    Pros:
Design- I really like the overall design. Sleek and professional
    Specs- i7 4710, 16gb ram, Nvidia 860m, 256gb SSD
Keyboard- The keyboard feels nice and solid to me. I don't mind the tiny arrow keys because I never use them anyways.
Price- I feel that the specs I received for $1399.99 was a pretty damn good buy.

    Cons:
Display- Now hear me out! I like the display over all. Its plenty bright, and I think it looks great! However, I have a minor light bleed issue in the top right corner area. It is only noticeable when the screen is pitch black. I am rather disappointed with this. If I bought it locally I would take it back, but being I bought it online I'm just going to live with it and move on. It's not terrible but kinda irritates me.

This is all I have for now. I have only had it for a couple hours. I will update more later.

p.s- My WiFi is perfectly fine and my display is model LGD0469

Anyone know if the Acer store has another coupon running? Or is Newegg the only/cheapest place to get these now? :\

Also do you guys recommend getting the version without SSD and putting it my own 256gb?

Also, the version in the Acer store is supposedly OOS but available for backordering? Anyone know how long this'll take?

On Amazon the same model is $1300+ after taxes and fees.. might just get the TigerDirect or Acer.com deal.

New 791 - I can live with half-sized arrow keys. Just about.

BUT I CANNOT LIVE WITH THIS TOUCHPAD.

Please, someone back me up on this? It's utter s**t - WHY would anyone make buttons part of the pad?! Whenever you click, the cursor moves with your finger resulting in misclicks, there's nothing to indicate where you should press for click to register, and WHERE IS THE DRIVER FOR IT?!

Acer's website has a Synaptics driver for similar models, but not the Black Edition! Why? I can't edge scroll, two-finger scroll - no gestures at all. The touchpad is completely unfit for purpose.

Such a pity - the actual insides are great, and cooling/noise is perfect. But if I can't navigate easily, 'tis all for nought. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I'm thinking of getting the tigerdirect 17" with NO SSD for $1200. Would this M.2 SSD be good? Is that a good brand? How hard is it to access the M.2 bay on the 17" version?

Otherwise I'm thinking of getting the 15" with 128GB SSD on Amazon for $1330.

Which is the better deal IYO?

Which wifi card do you have Atheros or Broadcom? I heard someone mentioned that there are two different wireless cards being put in these models.

well, the SSD you linked is not M.2, but rather mSATA - which doesn't fit into the Nitro.

    Amazon.com: Crucial M500 240GB SATA 6Gbps M.2 Internal SSD [Crucial PN: CT240M500SSD4]: Computers & Accessories

I would recomend this one. rather cheap, relieable. not the fastet one, but still not slow.

considering access to the M.2-slot: here things strat to get pretty ugly. as far as I know, you even have to remove the mainboard itself, because the M.2-slot is beneath the mainboard for VN7-791G.
    http://www.notebookcheck.com/filead..._759Q/Acer_Aspire_VN7_791G_759Q_33_von_41.jpg
on the 591G, you can access the M.2 from above and "only" have to remove the keyboard:
    http://www.notebookcheck.com/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_AspireV15_VN7_591G_Innereien_3250e3479d.jpg

I am too torn between the 591G with SSD or the 791G without (also because by upgrading it myself, I could get 240GB SSD and not only 128 GB).

another question: what do you guys think: is the i7 worth the cash? the i5-4210H should be pretty fast in almost all games, too and (perhaps) runs even a little cooler, though he shares the same TDP of 47W as the i7-4710.

Woops you're right, didn't see that.

I'll probably get the 791G; I saw a video of someone disassembling a V17 and it was pretty straightforward. I might get this M.2 instead, since it's like $10 more for SATAIII as opposed to just SATA 6gbps.

I'd really like to find a 591 version with 1TB HDD and no SSD for $1000ish so I can get an SSD for that. I wonder when all the other versions available overseas will be released in the US..

Edit: Hell, I might just get the Newegg V15 with 1TB HDD and no SSD and replace the HDD with a 512GB SSD since SATAIII's are so damn cheap now.

well, your last option is surely doable, but on the other hand you dimish one of the advantages of the Nitro-series with such a decision. if you want to only replace the HDD, you could also go with NBs like Lenovo Y50 (or Y70 for 17 inches). though the Lenovos do have problems with the the turbo boost of the CPU.

Quick question, which one would you get:

    1. MSI GE60 2PE with i7 4710 , gtx 860m ddr5 and 8gb ram or
    2. Acer Aspire VN-7 591G with i5 4210 , gtx 860 ddr5 and same 8gb ram

Both are priced at 860€ here in Germany. I will be gaming maybe few hours a week and use it mostly for programming, rendering and 3d modeling.

Never assume. It's one or the other. Don't buy.

where do you get the 591G for 860€? cheapest one I found was 899€.

nevertheless, I would go with the Acer. The GE60 gets really loud and still very hot with the i7-4710 + GTX860M - combination. yes, the i5 might hurt your a little for gaming in the long run, but not that much. it will however slow your rendering down a little, compared to the i7.

I would like to buy the VN7-571G-55BL (4210, gtx850) I currently live in the netherlands and I would have to order it from Germany where it will be available at the end of the month, in case i will get a model with bad brightness or other issues it would be really annoying to return it :(
I'll wait for some feedback from other people who will buy the same model

Isn't the i7 far better in rendering than the 4210u?

The price is with student discount. I really like the Acer but MSI seems better on paper and and offers easy upgrade compared to Acer. And if im not wrong even Acer with i7 has the same temp as GE60 on some reviews. What is the difference between i7 and i5 in terms of percentage?

well, the GE60 is roughly 4 dB louder, that should be quite a difference (10 dBs mean double loudness). and the temps on the surface are far worse for GE60 - 45°C almost all over the keyboard, where the 591G does reach those only in the middle and more towards the hinge/fan outlet.

and what do you mean with percentage? difference in gaming? or for rendering? if you meant rendering, mayby have a look at the CPU benches at NBC (you have to look at the i5-4200H - the 4210 doesn't have values yet). Cinebench multicore should give you a good guess.

Thanks for help. I was looking at different comparisons and the difference between them is 6.9 for i7 and 6.8 out of 10 and according to this the difference is unnoticeable. But one thing is benchmark and real performance is different, so my question is how different are they in every day usage, how much lower performance in general can i get from i5, from what is figure out i5 is better coz use much less power but i7 has better overall score.

how is 10dB double the loudness? you double the amplitude when you reach around 6dB. 10 dB means it's about 3x the amplitude

Had to wipe my 791g (I put on a m2 SSD and did a clean install).

I have a problem: where can I find the dust defender installer ?

PS: if I remember correctly 3dB is double, 10dB is tenfold.

Anyone bought VN7-591G-74SK in US? I saw many critical review for the poor screen quality and wifi issues on newegg.
I really like this laptop because of it has IPS screen and SSD + HDD, but those negative reviews made me hesitate.
Do you guys have these issues as well?
    Thanks!

Ok guys , Due to the uncertainty about the Acer display and negative feedback, I finally bought the Lenovo Y50 with i5, 8GB, 1TB+8GB Hybrid drive, all for $950.
Depending on how bad the display is, I'll get a $100 replacement IPS display and swap it out.
That'll make an awesome all round notebook

I've decided to do this as this seems cheapest:

I'm going to get the V791 and move the stock HDD to the Optical Bay, put in a Samsung evo 256gb ssd into the old HDD slot, and save up for a separate M.2 SSD later on.

well, I can only tell for Europe/Germany, but comparing SATA-SSDs and M.2-SSDs, the pricegap is rather small. comparing Crucial M500s we talk about 4€. but AFAIK, you already have the SATA-SSD, which changes things a bit. gl anyway!

The price gap in America is still pretty steep, unfortunately :\ M.2 256GB seems to be around $130, whereas a 256GB SATA SSD can easily be found for >$90..

well, it's your decision. but IMHO, those 40 bucks are really woth the cash, because you still retain your OOD (which can be handy from tim to time) and spare yourself the work to switch the drives. but that's just me. ;)

well, I think the pattern is rather clear. now that the new consoles are all multicore, too, the number of games with benefits from quadcores will rise. I am still torn between the i5 and the i7 at the moment. for actual games, it doesn't make a difference (well, in most cases ... ;)). but what about two years from now?

    and according to THAT article:

    http://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/the-evil-within-pc-performance-analysis/

the game should be okay, even with a dualcore. and the i5-4210H is a rather fast one (by laptop-standards ...).

To be fair according to the article you linked to SCARed, 4 core CPU ran the opening scene with fps 21% higher than simulated dual-core (63 vs 52) which is a significant difference in my book.

In my opinion the only reason to buy i5-4210H is saving money. It's not a slow CPU but it should have a TDP of 35W as dual-core usually have. That would at least mitigate some of the performance deficiencies by making the job of the cooling system a bit easier and maybe offering a bit longer battery life. Since it doesn't do any of those things its only benefit is the amount of money you save on i5.

Long story short - if you can afford an i7, go for it. If you can't -you go for the next best thing, which is i5-4210H in this case.

both i5 4200H and 4210H are rated at 47W because their base clock is too high. the rule with haswell is that the closer you get to 4ghz the less you benefit from haswell's efficiency. keep in mind although its rated 47w, it still won't be as hot as an i7 under full load, it just get higher temps in multithreaded works as the quad core benefits from having extra threads so that it can either run at lower clock or complete the task faster

I got the VN791 version from TigerDirect for $1230 with 2-day shipping.

I'm looking for a HDD Caddy that will fit the Nitro to replace the Optical Drive with the stock 1TB HDD, and put an SSD in the main memory slot for now.

edit: Can anyone confirm the size of the HDD used in the 17" version? I need to know what size caddy I need to get.

Yes the trackpad is bad. I have had the machine for 2 weeks. It is definitely inaccurate and hard to glide your finger over

The trackpad is ok. Its not as good as Apples but its ok. I'll keep the i5 version btw. In 2-3 years I'll buy a new Laptop anyway

I really dislike it. I find it tends to be inaccurate and is not as sensitive to taps as I would like. I also do not care of the texture of it.

I'm coming from an old first gen i7 Dell XPS. The trackpad on that was glass smooth, very sensitive and accurate. It reminded me of using a modern capacitive touch screen whereas my Acer reminds me of an old school resistive touch screen.

I could also do pinch-to-zoom on my old Dell and I can't on this. Not the end of the world but it was convenient

    Hi all,

Does anyone know what is the difference between VN7-791G-71P5 model and VN7-791G-73AW model except the Blue-Ray/DVD drive. First one is selling on Amazon and second one on Newegg. I ask this because the model with DVD is actually more expensive on Acer website then Blue-Ray model.

    Thanks

The Acer website is running a quietly advertised Veteran's Day sale. A little over 15% off the V Nitros. Discount shows up automatically in your shopping cart.
