btw, there is a new model visible on the US website VN7-591G-75NJ
It has a full HD IPS display
-
I returned my V Nitro yesterday. Screen was to dim, my eyes were literally bloodshot after playing a couple of hours of games on it.
-
something was wrong with your unit. i never pass 50% brightness while i am indoors with alright light.

Literally the one time I pay for 2-day shipping and it's already been 4 days.. Screw UPS and TigerDirect for fking up my order in the first place.

Ok guys where to find coolboost and dustdefender app for v17.
Got new one for a week now (version without windows i install windows 8.1 by my self) but i can't find on the web for download?!
Does anybody have to put somewhere on download? Tnx in advance.
Sorry for my broken english. Greetings. -
So wait, I need some confirmation:
1. is the trackpad usable at all?
2. How is the screen (brightness, viewing angles, color reproduction)? -
Is usable on Win 8.1
Screen is ok (LG IPS). You can calibrate if you need or want. But is much better than on my previous Probook 450 (TN) -
trackpad is very usable..
how did you all calibrate your display?
i have 15" model, here are my settings in intel hd graphics setup:
red and green - brightness 0, contrast 48, gamma 1.1
blue - brightness 5, contrast 48, gamma 1.1 -
Disclaimer: Your results may vary.
I 2nd the question about what program you guys are using for screen calibration? Unfortunately it may be a few weeks before I really get to play with my new 591G-75NJ.. -
BTW, I got a USB wifi adapter to solve the reception problems. TP-Link WN8200ND, for converted about 36 USD. Gives me 5 bars vs. 0-1 bars in reception and >2 mb/sec vs. almost nothing. It's the most painfree solution for me, as the Wifi is fine when in good reception, therefore I dont need to bring the adapter around.
-
2. The screen brightness is very dim, viewing angles are good though and so is color reporduction
It isn't a top quality screen. It is a lower end IPS display -
My wifi issues seem to only occur in the far room of my house so far. It worked fine on campus, and the speed has improved enough in my house with a little tweaking that it isn't really a major issue for me anymore. I was getting almost nothing in the far room before I tweaked it and updated the driver, now I seem to get 5 mb/s to 13 mb/s. Seems like the wifi card only has issues with certain types of routers too. -
Searching throughout the web, I have seen that there are even some caddies with a thickness of 9.5 mm .
But measuring the original ODD I can see a thickness of only 8.5 mm.
Now can someone explain me where is the mistake?
The v17 nitro mounts an "unconventional" hard drive or i'm not able to measure a thickness? xD
By the way, to remove the ODD you only need to remove ONE screw on the bottom of the laptop, so anyone can verify. -

The screen is dim? That's pretty odd; reviews I've seen say that the screen has like 300 brightness which isn't bad at all. Is that a different model or something?
Additionally, is the two-finger scroll gesture working on the trackpad now? -
i suppose so, i just set my dell u2414h to 100% brightness next to my nitro with 100% brightness and nitro is more bright than dell!
2 finger scroll worked out of the box for me, so i dont know what are you refering to with now on the end of your question..
also, pinch to zoom works in internet explorer and photo viewer. -
I'm just nervous because there are SO MANY CONFLICTING views on this laptop. Some people say the two-finger scroll doesn't work, some say the screen is dim, some say the whites are yellow on the screen - I don't know what to believe.
-
Is this series of laptops really that bad? I was considering buying one, has good overall reviews but this thread is making me consider something else
-
Screen isn't dim at all,
2 finger scroll worked, double click worked (either on 8.1)
Bla, bla, bla but dustdefender app zero points? Where to find f...... application? Thank you very much.
Everyone who's interested go to the store and see model live. -
So my VN7-791 came in today.
Screen brightness is fantastic, and viewing angles are great.
I won't lie, the touchpad sucks . Way too much finger-dragging resistance. Keyboard is nice and quiet except the spacebar. Wifi has been working fine.
Anyone know how to redeem Assassin's Creed? -
Lol what store has this laptop on display?
-
Question. Does the keyboard have indication lights for caps lock, num lock, airplane mode, etc?
-
Reply for:
? I read the whole thread in a last few days and I can say that now I'm more interested in buying Nitro V17 than I was before! If the random screen and WiFi issues, and the odd trackpad are the main disadvantages of this unit, then it is on top of my list.
There are far more bigger (unfixable) issues among competitors like low quality screen on Lenovo Y series or build and sound quality of Gigabyte P27...
There is no perfect laptop, even if there is for someone, it will be bad for someone else. -
BTW my screen is bright and nice, and the trackpad is not bad. gestures worked out of the box. -
-
edit: Has anyone been able to claim their free download of Assassin's Creed: Unity? I got some bull short code that doesn't work. -
Any BIOS upgrade? On my V17 is V1.07.

Hello!
I bought an Acer Aspire Nitro and I want to install everything completely new. I want to format the SSD and only put the OS Win 8.1 on the notebook. Without all the other tools and so on.
BUT I have a question:
Which tools are important? I mean the Acer tools which come with the notebook, to operate the special Acer hardware functions (like Dust Defender)?
And how can I install these tools again after a complete wipe and new installations?
Does anyone have a download link?
Or do I get it somehow differently? -
Probably and computer store "Micronis" here always have some models on..... -
I found out about one other annoying issue, I wonder whether other people experience the same. When I sleep/shutdown/hibernate the laptop, the external speakers (via 3.5mm) will immediately emit a very loud buzzing noise, like a ground loop but much louder. During normal usage there is nothing (not even a faint buzz). Makes me having to unplug the speakers everytime when I want to turn off the comp... a bit irritating to say the least.
anyone else get this or happens to know a cause/fix for that? -
-
estiar likes this.

I live in the US though...
-
Any updates on the caddy size for replacing the V17's optical drive with a third 2.5"? WIll a 9.5mm caddy fit?
-
Wifi is OK, not great, not terrible. I use it plugged into ethernet anyways.
Screen brightness is fantastic; I love that you can actually turn off the screen.
I'm currently in the market for a HDD caddy so I can replace the ODD with the stock HDD and move an SSD into the memory slot.estiar likes this. -
How do you turn off the screen? You mean like a lid close action?
-
Fn+F6 should turn the screen off.

Guys I addedd an m.2 sata ssd and cloned the hard drive to the new SSD. Now I have two problems: 1: the right click on the touchpad does not work. 2: the search function of windows does not work either. What can I do? I have already installed all the drivers.

5 variants of the 15" and 2 variants of the 17" models available for Ireland at komplett.ie
Dutch site seems to have the exact same models.
If only I had the dough right now... dayum! -
Interesting review from Poland of a 15" Nitro with Core i5 and 860M.
While they used different software to test throttling - Intel Burn Test and Unigine Valley benchmark, they have concluded that throttling is not a problem in this configuration.
While max temperature is still quite high - 98*C tops with both benchmarks running it apparently doesn't affect the CPU frequency. It would make sense that despite the same theoretical TDP Core i5 (2 core) would be cooler or at least easier to cool down than Core i7 (4 core).
What I've found particularly interesting is performance comparison to other Core i7 laptops with 860M.
It seems that Core i5 Nitro 15" can be bought at a really low price with 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD (both of which you can upgrade later). At the same time performance gap between Core i5 and i7 doesn't seem to be significant but throttling seems to be a non-issue with Core i5.
I did argue somewhere earlier in this thread that the only reason you would buy a Core i5 version would be to save money - I stand corrected (by myself) - it seems that Core i5 version might be a bargain after all.
-
*g* you said that to mee. and it is still true, I would say. the i7 can give you better perfromance in some games right now. but looking at the last games ported from next gen consoles, multicore might become more important over the next years. so yes, the i5 does give you nice performance, too, but looking into the future, I would more likely skip the SSD when buying and rather take the i7 (i5 with SSD is the same price as i7 with SSHD - here in germany).
if you are interested into the topic: Gaming Laptops Reviews
he tested the Y50 with i5 as well as i7. very small differences for the benches. -
I know i7 is better, not denying that, but i5 with HDD is so damn cheap for the performance and build quality it offers that people who otherwise couldn't afford a decent gaming notebooks can easily own one and upgrade to SSD and/or more RAM when needed later on.
I have to say I'd struggle to find any half-decent gaming notebook that would be of better value than i5 Nitro with HDD. -
So final verdict for a student who wants to game, but mainly is going to be using touchpad a lot and typing while on the go - do I get it?
-
I've bought the cheapest Black Edition (i5-4210H, 1000+8GB SSHD, GTX860M, Linux, etc.) and I'm waiting for the 3rd machine.
The first one came with faulty Fn button.
The second one had loose Touchpad.
My opinion:it's a half-baked product.
There are many software issues (Win7, Win8.1):
- (Synaptics) touchpad driver: nothing can be set, scrolling doesn't work
- Acer's own Launch Manager doesn't work
- Keyboard backlight is always on after restart
- Probably the dumbest BIOS I've ever seen
Surprisingly the laptop works pretty well under Ubuntu 14.10.
Hardware complaints:
- Quality control
- Wi-Fi
- hard to upgrade
- every port is on the right side
I wish I had bought Asus N550/N551 instead.... -
