Can you accept modern AAA games running at 720p@Low@30fps? (more or less xbox 360 quality. Everything less than AAA FPS runs much better). If so, drop down a class in GPU (840M or Iris Pro 5200). This opens up options like Asus Zenbook UX303LN (super light), Thinkpad Yoga 14 (best PC laptop keyboard/trackpad, see mobiletechreview), or Macbook Pro Retina (best trackpad available, highest rated laptop).
If you *need* an 860M in this price range and at 15" or less, you can: 1) Wait for Alienware 13" 2) Deal with heat issues of the 15" Asus ROG.

Almost made my sister order an Nitro V17 with un i5+GTX 860m but she was affraid of Acer, she finally ordered a MSI GE70.
I would have ordered an Acer which was cheaper, better on paper (better cooling, IPS screen, better looking (imo), SSHD instead of ordinary HDD) and notebookcheck seems to really appreciate this laptop Acer Aspire V17 Nitro (VN7-791G-759Q) Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews -
Well, it's her decision, but IMHO she made a far worse deal. MSI doesn't stand for top notch quality either, if that was her concern with Acer and the GE70 will run more hot and still be way louder. Add their somewhat custom keyboard design and well, I don't see any advantages next to better upgradability and serviceability. Though you have to look, if the warranty stickers, MSI places on their laptops, is important in your country. Here in Germany they are no issue, but things can be quite different in your place.
My advice: talk to her once again, give her all the information and if she still wants the GE70, then let her have it. It's okay, but the VN7-791G ist IMHO better by quite a margin.ellalan likes this. -
ACER Where to find Coolboost app and dustdefender app?
Jesus. -
Guys I have a problem. When I connect my bluetooth headphones, Jabra Revo Wireless, there is an audio delay of almost half a second. It is very annoying and make them almost unusable. What can I try? the drivers are all updated.
-
Believe me, I tried my best to convince her to take the Acer, she actually almost ordered it (she called a geek friend who told her that MSI is better, and destroyed all my argumentation). And I am kinda a MSI fanboy, but honestly, I couldn't defend the GE70 which was pricier with lower components and a horrible cooling system (noisy and still can't cool well, I think I will repast it right away if the temps are too high, it usually lower the temps by 10°c, fortunately, it's super easy on MSI laptops and it doesn't void the warranty). My own experience also influenced her choice, since I had a old Acer that didn't last long, and my current laptop (a Medion which is actually a rebranded MSI, guess you know since Medion is a german brand) is fine (not that old though, almost 2years old). I am not closed minded, I won't condemn a brand just because I had a bad experience with it, I guess I am just cursed since that the Asus that followed my Acer lasted even shorter
-
I didn't mean to offend you. I just wanted to stae my opinion. well, in the end it's her money. *shrugs*
but I can very well understand you. seeing someone choosing something sub-optimum drives me crazy, too. the GE70 isn't bad, but the Acer ist just so much better. -
Don't worry I am not offended, I just agree so much with you that I feel a bit sorry for my sister, the MSI looks nice, but the Acer is just sexy imo
-
-
Too bad Acer has one of the worst reputation in my country (used to have a high failure rate, crap customer service in my country), I'm pretty sure they improved a lot the last few years, but people hardly change their mind. Meanwhile other brands are overrated.
-

To be fair Acer's laptops are of good quality ever since they dumped the "silver-looking" series (I can't remember its codename) and introduced - first Gemstone series and then Gemstone Blue series. These were already of good quality.
This was in 2008 and in spite of that they are still being seen as a manufacturer of low quality products today. It's something for companies to keep in mind - once you tarnish your brand once it takes very long time to rebuild it.
There is a bright side to this story too - they can't really charge premium money if they want to keep the sales up, so Acers are almost always competitively priced - Nitro costs reasonable money for what is arguably a premium design, partly because it's an Acer. If it was Dell or Samsung it would be considerably more expensive. -
I'm a little confused here:
I've been checking on the 591gs for quite some time now, constantly struggling with which variant I want and hoping to not get a defective one when I finally buy one. I decided to wait for next week til a local store in my vicinity has the laptops on display and then buy it in store. I feel more comfortable when I know where I have to go if something should be faulty instead of putting a 1000+ € piece of hardware in the mail to send it to somewhere... So routinely checking on this stores website it today showed the model "vn7-591g-75m1" would be in stock next week. I'm quite familiar with the designations of the models now and "75M1" was unknown to me. I checked it's specs and wondered because it has exactly the same components as the "77A9" has. i7, 128 GB SSD. I went to cyberport which has both models listed:
75M1 vs. 77A9
There is however a tiny difference. The wifi is marked as "ac" for the 75M1 and it's also marked as "NEUHEIT" (german meaning NEW), opposed to the 77A9.
What does this mean. Is the 75M1 a response to the problems with the wifi?
What do you think?
edit:
See this side-by-side comparison for a better overview:
http://www.schottenland.de/produkt-vergleich/21903627-21927054?srt=name -
Well, AC is a new wireless standard, so it should be a different (hopefully more reliable) card!
-
Go for the one with 802.11ac card - it can't be any worse than the stock Atheros. It could be wither a Broadcom one (most likely), an Intel 7260 or a new Atheros (sold under Killer brand as 1525)

Apologies if this has already been answered....is the OS installed on the M.2 SSD? I am thinking of picking up this: VN7-591G-75NJ and replacing the SSD to a 256gb one.
-
OS should be on the SSD, yes.
-
How to open card reader/SD port/slot on v17? Does any body know? Tnx
-
By the looks of it, it's the standard SD slot, so you have to push the dummy-card in until it clicks and then let go - the spring will push part of the dummy-card out.
-
My V15 came today and all I can say is this thing is great. I have no issue with screen brightness. In fact, I have it turned down all the way in a sunlit room. One question though. How do you disable that auto contrast the screen does?
-
I scratched up the soft touch material surrounding the slot a little trying to push the card in, would have been nice if Acer included a note about how to remove, as it's certainly not obvious or easy to do once you know.downloads likes this. -

Anyone have experience replacing the ODD with HDD caddy + HDD, and SATAIII SSD in the HDD slot? What size caddy fits? Any problems migrating OS + Files??

My friend and I each ordered one from Newegg, this one to be specific;
Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition VN7-791G-77JJ Notebook Intel Core i7 4710HQ (2.50GHz) 16 GB DDR3L Memory 1TB HDD 256GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8.1 64-Bit - Newegg.com
It's the 17" version, his just arrived today and we got a chance to look at it very quickly. I can say we are quiet satisfied so far. So to cover some of the concerns that were brought up here.
Screen: It's a nice full HD, bright, great color reproduction. Screen bleed is a very minor one at the lower right corner, though it's only visible if the screen is completely black, so not much of an issue there. Text and icons are sharp and crisp, videos and photos were very vivid and rich. Overall very satisfied, way better than my 5 years old Macbook pro that's for sure. I'm gonna enjoy Photoshop on this.
Trackpad: Trackpad is alright, not as bad as some would make it on here. 2-finger scrolling works well and tracking seems to be accurate enough. Nothing to compare to the Macbook pro that's for sure, but leaps and bound better than my two years old Lenovo Thinkpad Edge.
Wi-Fi: Now this one gave us quite a scare, for awhile it had difficulty to connect to the Wi-fi router on the second floor. After a little bit resetting and a couple more tries it worked. And it continued to work well, we were able to watch Youtube without a hitch, on the other hand, we haven't really got to download anything so I can't give any detail on the actual speed. There were no disconnect during the 1 hour we tested and we were able to browse the web just fine. I'm keeping my finger cross that mine won't have any issue as well. No, we did not open the laptop up, so I can't tell you what wireless card it has inside sorry
Speakers: The speakers were quite good, it took us by surprise for how deep the base can get. The sound were crisp and volume can reach quite a high level. Perhaps it's not as good as the JBL with a sub-woofer on the Y50, but comparing it to all the older laptops of the past that we both own, the Nitro blew them out of the water.
Keyboard: It will come down to personal preference here. I've used the Macbook and Lenovo keyboard intensively, and I can say the Nitro is closer to the Macbook one. So if you like typing on a Mac you'll enjoy the Nitro. I like it, spacious and easy to type on, so not much I can say there. The red back-lit is very nice, definitely an eye-catcher, too bad there is no brightness level.
Software: Some free Acer's bundle software are there of course, but it didn't seems to bog down the laptop's performance. However, I'm sure we'll be doing some uninstalling soon. The Dust Defender app is there, we used it and it seems to blow very gentle air out of the 2 bottom vents to combat the dust. How effective will this be? Only time will tell, but I have a feeling it's just one of Acer's gimmick feature. I can't find the Cool Boost app though, will look for it more later.
Case: Man is this a sexy and svelte design, the pictures will not do it any justice. Very discrete and elegant in styling, so if you aren't a big fan of the flashy, "look-at-me-now" gaming laptop, the Nitro will suit your taste. I can say that the design is made to age very well. The chassis is all made out of plastic, but it feels very premium, none of those flimsy stuff you'll find on $600-800 laptops. Very solid from the lid to the bottom cover. The hinge is very sturdy and kept the screen from wobbling around too much even with a quick sudden movements. The soft touch finish on the cover and the palm rest are all very user friendly, it's good for grip and minimize fingerprint. No gaps or seams were out of place, overall fit and finish is top notch. However, I suggest that you take care not to bump it into anything, those soft touch material will leave a scar. This laptop has a very big footprint and be prepare to find a new bag to fit it, however, the weight (it feels the same as my 15" Thinkpad Edge) and thickness are far lighter and thinner compared to other 17inch, I would guess only MSI GS70 can beat it on that category.
Noise and Heat: Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to stress test or play any games yet. However, I will update if we get a chance to do so. Using it for watching you tube and browsing the web was a breeze, dead silent and downright cold to the touch. We will be doing some modeling/rendering with 3D-Max and Lumion soon, so again, I'll update about the heat and noise ASAP.
Lastly, there's not much I can say about battery, haven't tested it. I hope this cover up some of the concerns or question you guys have and I pray to the Lord of Luck that mine will arrive without a hitch, because Acer seems to really exceed my expectation here. Good luck to those of you who are interested in getting one. -
Please can you upload somewhere The Dust Defender app and CoolBoost app if you find. For download?? i was buy v17 without windows and i can't find app's on the web, tnx in advance, greetings.

Hi
Go here : Acer software for Windows 8
and download Acer Quick Access. It will give among others option to activate Dust defender and Cool Boost. (Those apps are only available for VN7 791G and not for 591G). -
I already have quick access from the first day on my v17 but.... http://i.imgur.com/6URnJrQ.jpg

I just chatted with Acer Support. The guy there told me that the -75M1 indeed had an AC chip. I hope this one does not have the reception issues. I then just have to get lucky with the screen. It's a shame that buying such an expensive thing comes with at lot of ifs and whens. These issues should be absolutely nonexistent...

I have a few questions if you can help me:
On the Acer website for USA, for the model VN7-791G-77JJ it says that it isn't Black Edition, yet on Newegg it says it is?
If it is BE, can you see any difference between this model and Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition VN7-791G-73AW except price? I thought that the difference is backlit (VN7-791G-73AW)/non-backlit keyboard (VN7-791G-77JJ), but you said that it have a backlit keyboard.
Thanks -

Hi,
i got a problem with my acer V nitro 15 inch.
The CPU is locked to 0,75GHZ even if i run OCCT !!
I watched on the UEFI but there is no way to find a menu which enable core option.
Mabe the bios is locked for now ?
But why i can't reach 2,50ghz and even more with the turbo boost to 3,4ghz ??
Thanks -
I've also find this on Acer website (comparison with 77JJ): "The 73AW has several extra features: Backlit keyboard, Four Speakers, Superior optical/DVD feature capabilities", but who knows what is true any more.
-
Confirm that you are not limited by the power profile settings (your current power-profile says max CPU frequency 100%).
If that's the case check the BIOS to see if anything smilar to Intel Speed Step is available - if so, make sure it is ENABLED.
If neither is available or works - check if you have the most recent BIOS. If not update to the most recent one.
If this doesn't help either - see if you have the same problem when booting from Ubuntu yields the same result.
If all of the above fails - contact Acer support. This may be caused by a motherboard issue (some power regulator). -
I'm not limited by the power profile, i checked many times.
I always use power AC, never the battery only but i tried with only the battery, it's the same issue.
The bios is UEFI, there are no option to modify, there is only information and menu boot option.
I will try to contact ACER.
I would install windows 7 but i heard some where that with UEFI it's a little bit complicated, i'm newbie...
I'll try ubuntu, can i install and boot only with USB key and not install on the HDD?
Thanks.
NB: My UEFI version is 3.7
I didn't find any BIOS on acer website, even not the 3.7... -
Yes you are right - I didn't check that but as it turns out there is no BIOS available for download for wither 15" or 17" nitro.
As a last resort you can use Acer eRecovery to revert the notebook to factory state - if you send it to Acer, that's the first thing they will do anyway, so you might as well so it yourself. If it doesn't help, go on and contact them.
In the past such issues were either caused by BIOS (and were solved with a BIOS update, never happened to Acer though) or caused by a faulty motherboard (failing power regulator). Since other users do not suffer from this issue, it's not likely to be a BIOS problem, more likely a mobo one. -
Having read the whole thread, being aware of the WiFi issues, the touchpad...
I will be always playing with wireless keyboard/mouse, so no hand will be resting on laptop.
I'm trying to decide between this Acer 17" / gtx670m / ssd+had / ips matte and the MSI ge60 Apache pro.
Been reading the two owners lounge and found that the main issue with that msi is heat.
I'm aware that all laptops get hot while gaming / editing.
My main concern with heat is not my hands, its my hardware. Can it be running 3~4 daily hours on 90~ degrees without doing any damage to internal components nor laptop life?
I will be getting new thermal paste and cooler stand, but , since i live in a hot country i'm concerned if this heat issues will suddenly cause some damage.
I will use it for dota 2, bf4 and photo editing. -
Hi,
i tried an hard reset, restoring all the PC, it didn't worked.
Then i removed all the stuff USB, HDMI etc... and the power AC cable.
Then turned off the PC and put a thin item in the hole to restart the battery.
I turned on the PC without power supply, and now i'm fine !!
I think there might be a issue with my battery or the power AC supply. I will do some cycle charge/discharge and see what happen then.
I hope you'll never have this issue -
Ok guys i found a temporary solution !
I installed "Throttlestop" and disable "BD Prochot" but i hope this will not destroy my battery or something else.
i read some thread here, thanks to them, so this could be a simple software issue ? Some other tell that they fixed the issue with a BIOS update.

But there is another issue, fans don't cooling enough CPU/GPU, they stay at the same speed, slow speed...

Hi, I got an Acer VN7-791G.
Is there a way to update graphic card-drivers using the drivers from nvidia website? The custom drivers from acer are a bit aged by now and I guess they will not take care of driver updates anymore. Would be a real shame if I'm being stuck with these drivers released early in september. -
Anyone know if the "Acer Aspire V Nitro VN7-791G-725Y" version model comes with an optical drive?
I'm looking specifically at this listing on Amazon.es, which does not specify:
Acer Aspire V Nitro VN7-791G-725Y - Portátil de 17.3" (Intel Core i7-4710HQ, 12 GB de RAM, 1 TB HDD, nVidia GeForce GTX 840M con 2 GB, Windows 8.1, Gaming), negro - Teclado QWERTY español: Acer: Amazon.es: Informática
Emailed Amazon, but they too need to confirm, so I'm waiting for a reply. -
Anyone bought the new 4k display one? In really tempted to buy it.
Also anyone know if they're havjng any cyber Monday or Black Friday deals on it? -
-
but I will sure try to update myself - gonna give some feedback once I have my unit.
