Asus looks like a thicker notebook at first glance but if you look more closely... it looks even thicker.![]()
It looks like two VGA ports would fit one on top of another.
It's not that I need an ultrabook but typing on such a tall notebook is going to be hard on the wrists.

Agreed. A "fat" laptop is no option for me anymore. I remain very interested in the Nitro.
-
Acer Nitro:
Weight: 2,4 kg
Height: 2,4 cm
Asus G551:
Weight: 2,7 kg
Height: 2,7 cm
Not sure if the G551 can be considered a fat notebook. Anyways odered the 999 Euros 15 inch VN7 with i5-4210H today. Will report back when I get it (should take about 1-2 weeks). -
I will try to cover all things u asked and post 1st pics/imressions in 5/6h. Still working
-
-
-
Edit: just compared the Slovakian prices to German prices in existing Asus notebooks, looks like we will most definately see a price increase anywhere between 100-400 Euros...ugh -
The G551 looks a lot like the N56 series from the side, and that is a really thick laptop.
-
Asus G551JM uses the same chassis as G56JR which is said to be 34mm tall, at least as far as I can tell (official ASUS specs here).
-
-
Really nice to hear, still waiting for a release date in The Netherlands.
Just the 17inch model is avaible here in just ONE webshop for 120euro's more then the 'normal price' (1320euro's for 17inch 860m 128gb ssd model)...
And i really need a new laptop for my IT study starting in two weeks (luckly i can rent my mothers 10000kg core2duo laptop for the time being XD)
Edit: It also looks pretty neat on those pictures -
Am I correct in thinking the 15" version is not available in any resolution higher than HD?
Thanks -
Nope - 15" is available with FHD too (or rather mostly with FHD)
-
-
Oh in that case - yes you are right. Nothing above FHD is available and knowing Acer it won't be.
It's a tiny miracle that they went for FHD and GDDR5. -
Thanks -
Hi everyone, I'm very interested in this laptop. Do we know if the hinge is metal or plastic ? I have doubts. And the soft touch material looks like it will get dirty quite fast.
-
Here we go
Pics:
<iframe width='480' height="360" src="http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/laserlars1/embed/slideshow/"></iframe>
Build Quality:
Very solid. One of the best 1000€ Notebooks i saw. Its all plastic, but the backcover for example has a very nice texture. It feels much more exclusive.
Palmwrist and Keyboard: In normal use (gaming too) u dont feel flex at all. U have to push it rly hard.
Display flex easy, very thin.
Keyboard/Touchpad:
Keyboard is ok. No flex but the keys are very soft. I used the Touchpad only for the start config. Its very responsive but if u move ur finger fast it has huge lags.
No Problems with the integrated keys.
Display:
15" Ips. I think we all know how it looks. Maybe u can give me some tips how i can find out which panel i have.
Noise:
In Idle/Office/Websurfing its just silent. Every 10min the fan kicks in (but in a very silent way)
Full Load my iphone app gives me 42db (40cm distance from vents)
Temps:
Just look up the pics. Maybe u can interpret these for me too.
The left side of the palmwrist always stays totally cool, even under full load.
Atm i rly dont like one thing: the bloatware its just full of it
Updates are comin like wlan/battery ( i will edit this post)
I also got a new Monitor, but thats not the topic here
Update1(new pics):
Wlan:
So iam at work right now and the wlan doesnt work. Its a cheap Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Chip. Just google it in combination with "windows 8.1". Not working WLAN would be a deal breaker for me
Edit: the laptop has the strongest signal from all my devices (dual antenna?!)
At home its still not working.
GPU:
Did a 3dmark2011 benchmark:3644
LoL maxed out (2560x1080) : 140fps avg
Also added a pic with temperature distribution. (green cold, yellow warm, red warm/hot).
DL Link GPU Z-Sensor Log (during 3dmark):
http://www22.zippyshare.com/v/61140945/file.html
There is a 2nd HWMonitor pic with cpu temps during 3dmark
Update 2
NEW PICS
One thing for sure the GPU does not Throttle! Today i did a Prime and FuMark Stress Test for 1,5h (both together). The GPU roughly hits 85C and The GPUZ Sensor showed no break down for Memory/Core Glock.
I used 3dMark 2011 and not 2013, though. And after the Benchmark i got a error message (u can see it on the screenschot, that yellow box above the results "driver not accepted"). Maybe thats the reason? During that Benchmark the CPU did not throttle, too.
BUT: The CPU throttled during that hardcore stress (prime+furmark) test, it hits 98C !!!!!
But thats not a problem for me, so far i played LoL, CSGO, Dishonored, Payday2, CoD:BO2 all maxed out on 2560*1080 and it was soft as butter I didnt buy 1000€ Notebook for hardcore games like BF4. Everywhere u read "can it run BF4 maxed out?" As if thats the Benchmark for thin light multimedia Laptop.
Also rly like the heat distrubition, only the area above the keyboard and the "j,k.l area" get hot. I think a Coolingpad like the Coolmaster U2/U3 would be perfect for this Notebook, because the intake is on the buttom in the last 1/3. So u can blow cool air right in this machine
The battery did 4h using my external Monitor with energy savin options. (2h websurfin, 2h movies)
The Keyboard is actually not so bad as i first thought. If u accustom to the typefeeling, u can write fast without mistakes. For gamin its good 2.
BUT: I hate that Touchpad (like every other Touchpad, except that apple one ) Its just a mess, although the surface is perefct for a touchpad.
Ah, i totally forgot: Solved the Wlan issue, now it runs pretty fast. 80Mbit DL, old Dell 20Mbit (at home, couldnt try it at work)
So far i have "only" 4 cons:
Touchpad
Bloatware
CPU Throttle during Prime+FuMark (but who cares?)
2GB Vram isnt enough for gaming in 2560*1080 and using the notebook as 2nd screen
Update 3
So guys i did the 3DMark again.
results:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/759420-new-acer-aspire-v-nitro-series-17.html#post9764122
I got the Notebook from cyberport too
Still have to wait for an answer from them for the inside look
Update 4
small update from my side
The display is a LGD0443 (i used Phoenix EDID Designer). I used the Laptopdisplay the last few days a lot more and i have to say its not so good as i 1st thought because there is one weird thing. If u move the display around (for example backwards) the lower part stays as it should but the upper part changes. Its hard to describe. Its not like a tn panel distortion, more like a grey veil.
But if u come from a crappy tn panel its stilll a huge upgrade.
other things i have noticed
-somertimes i get a high pitched noise. If the fans not runnin and its very silent in ur room u can hear it.
-there is alot of space between a key and the chassis. very "nice" place for dust and dirt
-one day i had ultra hardcore throttling, then i did a reboot and everything was fine (the notebook was only in standby, maybe something got messed up with energy savin when i 1st started it?)
-battery i would say 3.5h (display 100%+ energy save mode)
-imho the fans could be faster under full load. That cant be the acer ultra boost. And i also didnt notice the acer dust defender technologyLast edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
can you take off the back covers and show us the cooling setup pleaseee?

Lookin' good. I've been playing with the V5-573G today (my choice before the VN7 came along) and I really liked the thinness and weight. Not to mention its price of € 760. The VN7 is a bit thicker and heavier so I'm not sure if I will still go for the VN7, but they are both great notebooks.
-
-
I think I will order one, even if I have to wait until beginning October.
Its simply perfect for a picture editing and multimedia laptop. Only competitor would be the XPS 15 for me. But 17" is hard to ignore
Thanks for all the facts so far. -
Small tip for anyone interested in buying the 999Euro/15 inch Black Nitro with i5-4210H:
notebookbilliger offers that notebook without the 128GB SSD for 860 Euros (student discount). You can buy a 256GB SSD for 100 Euros and put it in later. Saves you a little bit of money.
Edit: @lockedaboss
Thank you, awesome pictures! CPU temps look a little bit high though, but considering the fans only run with 42dBA, not too surprising. What benchmark did you use? Is the palm resting area (Handballenauflage) made of metal/plastic or is it rubberized? Can you maybe run 3D Mark 2011 three times in a row and post your temperatures? -
So the ssd option it ships with is m2, which is currently limited to 256gb, and we can replace the hdd with an ssd also? Like samsung 840 evo 1tb? So we (i) could get one without m2 ssd and just switch out the hdd for a large ssd? Havent seen any specs regarding connectors.

100% sure this will not happen in The Netherlands.

Update1
So iam at work right now and the wlan doesnt work. Its a cheap Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222 Chip. Just google it in combination with "windows 8.1". Not working WLAN would be a deal breaker for me

@brrrbrack
Sure, no problem. Inside it's all rubber plastic, looks and feels nice but its a fat magnet
Only used the Intel CPU test and played lol on 2560x1080 maxed out (140fps avg)
I paid for my configuration 1099€ I think this is fair too ( if are not a student) -
Make sure you are using the latest driver available and that power management for the card is disabled (in device manager) and in Windows power-profiles the card is set to "high performance".
-
All done but no improvement. But the WLAN fn key doesn't work too, hmm
-
Are you sure that Wi-Fi is actually on? Make sure that LaunchManager is installed and running (it's an app responsible for special keys and combos)
-
I deleted "LaunchManager". All other fn keys works fine. Any yes wlan is on
At home its doesnt work too. Always "limited connectivity"
-
You should have kept Launch Manager - it's one of few apps that are needed.
If it does connect for Wi-Fi but offers limited connectivity it's a software/config issue.
Did Wi-Fi work fine at any point? -
Fine? Never. But it worked last night. 7Mbit. My 6y old Dell can do 20Mbit
Btw: Updated my "review" -
Try changing channels on your router and maybe check if there is a firmware update for your router. Also, there is a website dedicated to Atheros drivers. I'm not sure of the address, but maybe it contains newer drivers for the card.
Edit - found it: https://www.atheros.cz/ -
I cant change setitings at my work
At home every other device is running smooth
also did a driver update alrdy -
I ordered it today. If I wasn't late at work I could have got it today already. So I will have to wait til monday. I will then post a review here if anybody is interested.
Got the 17" IPS 1TB + 256SSD one -

@LockeDaBoss
Any word on battery life? -
btw: are temps (cpu/gpu) and benchmark score ok for this machine? -
-
just waitin for the response
-
@LockeDaBoss
The CPU temps are definately worrisome. 92-95C during 3DMark is simply too high. These temps might be okay during real stresstesting with Prime + Furmark, but not okay for a couple minutes of 3DMark. A lot of newer games will push the temps on this notebook to 100C after a couple hours of gaming. If you have a newer game like Thief or Battlefield 4, I would recommend running it for at least 1 hour and check your temps.
Most notebooks with good cooling usually hit 90-95C during stresstesting with Prime + Furmak. While gaming, which is usually less demanding, the temps should be at least 5-10C lower. This is very important for the longevity of the notebook. -
Hm, ok. I did the Intel XTU CPU stress test and the temps were always <90C. If u open the GPU log file u can see the GPU was always <90C, too. That should be ok?
-
1. Go download Prime 95 and Furmark (both are free).
2. Run both at the same time for at least 1 hour, better 2 (2hours = roughly 3 hours of Battlefield 4).
3. Check your temps.
When you get:
95-100C = too hot
90-95C = good average
anything below 90C = very good cooling -
-
according to notebookcheck, a GTX860M should reach roughly 5000 points.
perhaps you mean 3D Mark 2013 Fire Strike? but even then it should end up a little higher. even the Y50 scored 3750 to 3800 points. and that with it's quasi-nonexisting turbo boost.
that leaves me quite a bit concerned. -
