I don't know. I have bios V1.10. I think USB 2.0 is original microsoft driver, so you can't reinstall it that way. But every problem I had with this laptop like not working webcam and card reader I fixed with factory reset. Also mouse lagging appeared after factory reset so I did again and install new drivers and now everything working only poor wifi signal. I'm gonna send laptop to fix the wifi like @adrkra did it.

    V15 doesn't have any USB 2.0 so I can't help you much.

adrkra, setting Max Processor state to 99% disables CPU Turbo, so your speed is never going above base mhz, that is why you stopped throttling.

You can do a less performance losing method of reducing the temperature at 100% CPU load - detune CPU core 3 and 4's top multiplier a step or 2. And, restore Max Processor State to 100%.

That way you reduce the heat generated at 100% CPU, but still have full performance on Core 1 and 2, and almost full performance on Core 3 and 4.

You can use XTU to set each CPU Core maximum multiplier. In fact you can safely bump up the Core 1 and 2 Maximum multiplier safely, while decreasing Core 3 and 4 slightly for 100% CPU load times.

You will need to experiment with how much to reduce the Core 3 and 4 multiplier to stop Thermal Throttling. Some can drop down 1 or 2 steps, some need to drop all the way to 30x or 29x, still well above the 99% CPU Max State that disables Turbo completely.

Here is how what the XTU tuning looks like for me, I don't need to decrease Core 3 and 4, but this gives you an idea of what the tuning looks like.

    XTU changes from defaults.JPG

After you change the settings with XTU, you Apply them, and then Save to a Profile name, that way at each boot XTU will restore your settings at each boot.

If you crash Windows, for any reason, you will need to reopen XTU, select your saved profile, and Apply the changes again. XTU does this to protect you from a boot loop, should your XTU settings cause a crash on boot. But, any kind of crash will look suspicious to XTU, so be sure an make a habit of going back into XTU to re-enable the XTU settings.

    Hi all,
for last 5 months I have Aspire V Nitro (VN7-591G-76L9).

Yesterday I shut down the notebook by hibernating from Windows, as I had numerous times previously. Today when I tried to start up the notebook with power button, absolutely nothing happened. The notebook seems bricked to me. From two LEDs, the first one is off, the second one (battery) is glowing blue. This does not change at all, whether notebook is plugged in, or not.

I tried holding down the power button for 5 - 30 seconds, and then pressing it again, to no results.

    Do you have any ideas?

OK, pushing through the pin hole helped! It seems to unplug battery, there's even a little symbol nearby. Thanks Mattthev! You made my day! Hope that this will not happen anytime soon.

@Krez42 You're welcome :) I saw that symbol but I didn't know what battery it is. If it is normal or bios battery. Maybe try update bios because there is some update with D3 state (it's something with hibernating). V1.13 work good for me, but v1.10 what I had work pretty good too. It seems that Windows power management is not resetting now like it did before.

I checked acer website but there is only v.1.10,

After checking acer website I fund only bios v1.11 for nVidia and the older v1.10, from where you got v1.13?

I downloaded the Bios V1.14 for Acer v15. But after running it, it just open a small screen and close it without saying anything. I went to BIOS to check it is still V1.10. Is my BIOS updated?

@Lopin v1.14? There are only v1.11 for 17" and v1.13 for 15". Download that rar file, extract it to desktop. Run it like administrator and it will check your system then restart and update bios after that it will restart again and boot Windows. You can download CPU-Z and you will see which version of bios you have and don't have to go to bios.

Can somebody please post his default vcore or vid when cpu is on load?
I have the i5 Version 4210h and I think my vcore is too high.
Are there differences in each laptop? Because on Notebookcheck Screenshots of CPUZ the Vcore is much lower for 4210h and even 4710qh.

    thanks

    @Lopin Maybe were some problems.
@kalle101 If you are using Intel XTU just set it to default.
I don't know what you mean default vcore in CPU-Z. This is my lowest core voltage.

My "idle" CPU temp is around 50 degree, sometimes drop to 45, sometimes 52.
Idle is screen brightness 50%, wifi on, backkey light on.
    My Cpu is i7-4720hq
    Normal?

while maxing 4 cpu, 3400mhz, temperature is around 80+ degree, i think it does not exceed 90degree at all. Only maxing cpu here, nvidia not used.
    Normal?

Also the gpu 860x maxwell while playing dota 2 is 60 to 70+ degree, max is 78degree, all below 80degree.
    Normal?

Actually if you touch the right side, arrow keys there, it gets a little warm when idle, but when maxing cpu it actually became cooler, I think because the fan only run when maxing cpu?

How did you "maxed" your CPU? Cinebench or Prime95? Did you repaste it?

I have the same CPU in my V15 nitro, and mine is not keeping its trubo freq very long under prime95 "max heat" profile (8 threads). It's reaching 97°C really fast and then it's throttling.
    That was with v1.11 BIOS.

I recently updated bios to v1.13 with release notes saying 'Increased performance..." though... need to do further testing ^^

I didn't repaste or open anything.
I not sure whether my method works though I used OpenhardwareMonitor to check and the 4 CPU is maxed.
I'm running Chess Engines by running engine vs engine matches using all four core. I didn't use threading cause I think does engines do better with 'real' cores.

I didn't really see what update is, I just update everything. But there is one chipset update, I keep updating and it says updated. But when I refresh the update is still there. Even update history shows it is updated for a few times, as I repeated the update cause it won't go away.

hey guys :D i have the 17" model (VN7-791G-77JJ to be exact) and my only concern with the laptop is the erecovery management. apparently the application won't even open ( i think @MDV17 faced the same problem), i get the "do you want the following program to make changes to this computer" popup, i press yes, but that's as far as it goes. i used partition wizard to browse the partition and it has files inside it tho. any suggestions guys? this thing is driving me crazy!

    Hi Guys,

I am not sure if I can add this on here or if I need to start a new thread. On Newegg they have listed the V15 models with the 960M GPU.

    Thank you,

well, to be hinest: the are the same chip, but with different clockrates for stock. the 960M is like 90 MHz faster, which translates into a perfromance "boost" of roughly 7-9%.yeah for renaming chips@NV ...

I have noticed that most of the times when I turn my laptop on (AC plugged) the battery status shows "98% available plugged in not charging", sometimes i get 100%. Why doesn't it charge up to 100%? Is there a fix?

Yeah, and you can overclock with msi afterburner easily up to 150 Mhz on 860m, so that's that...

@hendrik87 No there is no fix - what you have now is a fix. The battery loses charge overtime but to protect it and prolong its life it won't start charging again until it goes below (usually) 96%. So it does charge up to 100% and then slowly loses charge overtime - if it kept charging again and again its life would be significantly shorter.

Some manufacturers - like Lenovo - even add special apps that allow you to stop battery from charging until it reaches i.e. 70%.

does anyone else have this problem that sometimes USB devices don't function properly after sleep/hibernate? I already disabled power saving functions etc. but I still have to re-plug the devices quite often after waking the comp. Often there is a behaviour where the plug/unplug Windows sound can be heard continously.

I had the frequent connect/disconnect issue some time back, not now. I though it may have been fixed with one of the windows update or something.

Hey guys, been interested in the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro for quite some time now, and this forum has a lot of info that helped me in knowing more about the actual usage of the laptop and I just finished reading all of it(Phew!).

I'll get to the point. Someone already posted about new,i.e 2015 models with 960m being listed on newegg.
Now although admittedly the 960m is almost the same card as the 860m, there appear to be some other differences, updates rather to the previous year's model.

For those who're looking for more info on this model,
    Here's a review:

    http://laptopmedia.com/review/acer-...g-gtx-960m-same-body-more-powerful-internals/

However the review is not exhaustive and there's no prime95 or furmark specified for temperature and throttling tests. There's some info about temperatures though.

Some of the updates of the new models are:
    1. New display panel ,from LG again, with better specs(refer the review) - LP156WF6_SPB1
    2. I7 4720hq cpu
    3. gtx 960m
    4. ac wifi, although its unclear atm which card is being used and the review doesn't cover connectivity.

So, the thing is, I'm getting this from a cousin in the US and was wondering if anyone around here has got the newer model(any configuration) and if they had any insights. From the looks of it, the update manages to reduce few cons (display, ac wifi, not throttling too much) .

PS: dear moderator, forgive this newcomer if the post was in any way "off"

Hey guys, I've got a question regarding the cloning of the HDD to the SSD. People seem to have used USB-to-SATA adapters and such. Can't it be done by just installing the SSD in the M.2 slot of the laptop and then doing it right there using the laptop itself ???

I'd appreciate any help from users who have done this as I plan to buy and install an SSD .

I received the 960m v15 from newegg last night. Everything seems to work great (especially gaming performance! and the laptop doesn't get very hot or loud).

I however noticed semi-frequent flickering on the screen as it adjusts the screen brightness. Googling this issue seems to point to power management? I'm going to have to play with this laptop some more to see if it's an actual defect or there's a workaround...

    Hi,

That is covered in the review posted few posts back (see http://laptopmedia.com/review/acer-aspire-v15-nitro-black-edition-vn7-591g-gtx-960m-same-body-more-powerful-internals/)
    I quote :

"The new Acer Aspire V15 Nitro uses PWM (pulse-width modulation) for controlling the screen brightness, thus making it harmful to human vision. We’ve recorded screen flickering across all brightness levels, but at least the frequency of the emitted light is high enough to be considered less aggressive, which in our case is 20 kHz. After setting the screen brightness above 75% – the frequency becomes even higher."

So, there is no workaround that I know of...

Can you please specify your model and the nature of the flickering. Does it occur when you're 'adjusting' brightness or at certain brightness levels?

And I'm not entirely sure about this but according to the laptopmedia review, apparently above 75% brightness, frequency being higher is a good thing....(flickering is reduced) Can you confirm?

…………..should i make recovery usb and use it to install the os on the ssd?? will i have problems being its smaller????
or will the DVD recovery media do any differently??? or should i clone ??? will the hdd and ssd size difference be a problem?? i would just like to clone the hdd to the ssd if the size is not an issue but im afraid the recovery partitions will not work once on the ssd, whats the best process to swapswap.. im wanting to replace main 1tb hdd with 120gb sdd, whats the best way to retain usable recovery partition, or were the usb recovery media will work on the new ssd if its installed,?

This is the one I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314849

The problem occurs when the laptop auto-adjusts the brightness. It is quite annoying and the flickering almost makes the laptop seem like there's some sort of defect. When I uninstalled the Acer Power Management app, the problem went away.

Hello everyone! It's my first post here, and I hope not last. ;) To the point:

I want to buy this Acer, exactly Black Edition with 15,6" and GPU 860M. I read couple of reviews on many sites with i5-4210H and i7-4710HQ. What I've read that model with Core i5 doesn't suffer for throttling CPU or GPU at all. Even keep stable Turbo at 3,5 GHz! This laptop will be used mostly in games so it's very importat to me that it will maintain stable and high frequency.
What about Core i7 version? In this model I've heard mixed opinions - one say that in games i7 maintains about 2,5-3,0 GHz, but only in stressful benchmarks the frequency drops even to 800-1000 MHz. But elsewhere I'v heard that it's terrible and always throtte.

My question: Is it worth to take i7-version with more cores and cache memory, or take safer i5? Is i7 clearly more efficient than i5? I suppose in normal use with browser, music players etc. it will be no difference. Maybe pack/unpack in WinRAR will be even faster on i5 thanks to bigger frequency. But how it will be in games? This most demanding of course like Battlefield 3/4/Hardline, AC: Unity, GTA5 or comming The Witcher 3.

i7 is almost twice more efficient than i5. You will clearly see this when using heavy applications like image/video editors, IDEs, etc. You can easily find some comparison graphs in the web. But in games, I believe, i5 is quite sufficient. I have i7-4710HQ, and I don't know a game which loads i7 more than 50%.

You gave me the most important information - "I don't know a game which loads i7 more than 50%". This is enough for me. ;-) So if in full stress with Prime95+Furmark the i7 in this Acer keeps default frequency for some time, than it will maintain in games where it's not fully loaded. :) Thank You very much.

Saw the new model with 4k and 960m for $1399 with a $50 promotion making this only $1350. Seems like a pretty good deal and significantly cheaper than the Asus G501 which I'm considering.
How is the cooling on this? I read reviews stating that this runs pretty hot. Will repasting the CPU and GPU help?

That's the same model I'm getting and that's a sweet deal isn't it!!! Good to know that the flickering is more of a non-issue for you now. Seems you're quite happy with your buy, why wouldn't you be.. ;)
Have you run any games on it ? Curious as to how GTA 5 would do in it , seeing as its all the rage right now..

PS: For all those looking to buy the acer aspire v nitro BE 15" , the link posted above is a sweet deal if there ever was one! :D

Hi guys, recently my function keys stopped working any ideas how to fix it? Reinstalling Launch Manager didn't fix it.
