For the backlit, I think you can forget it. Not possible. The key combination only works when acer software is installed. No option in Bios.

For the numlock, that's not specific to this laptop, that's a win8.1 problem. Only solution I found is using a scheduled task that run a very simple software called "num lock.exe" (no link, sorry) every time I log in or unlock my computer.
There is also a registry trick that could work, but in my case it didn't.

I've just discovered with HWinfo64 that the 8gb stick of ram inside my 591G is a samsung module, plain dd3 not low voltage... Do you think that replacing it with a low voltage one will give a considerable advantage in battery life and temperatures?

I was already thinking about upgrading with a second 8gb module since I use a lot of virtual machine, but if there is any advantage with ddr3l low voltage I could sell the samsung module and buy a ddr3l low voltage kit 2 x 8gb (e.g. : HyperX Impact HX316LS9IBK2/16 )

What do you think about it?

EDIT: I was wrong, voltage is 1,35V so my samsung actually IS DDR3L even if searching for module specs it looks that it's normal DDR3...

Now I'm wondering if going from CL11 to CL9 gives any real advantage

Try this "from hp support" but it work with me also

    CHANGE THE VALUE UNDER:

    "HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators" FROM

    "2147483648" (Windows 8.1, 64 bit)

    TO:

    "2147483650" (PROBLEM SOLVED)

    OR

Navigate to registry key HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Keyboard
Right click on the “InitialKeyboardIndicators”, select Modify and change Value data to 2.
Exit Registry. (THIS WAS NOT WORK)

    @ghs14

That's the trick I was talking about, thanks!

Unfortunately, I tried both value (2 or 2147483650), and I was not satisfied with it.

VN7 591G 70RT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=34-314-849 purchased in May for business, came with Qualcomm card WiFi which is essentially unusable, makes you wonder how this got through any QA at Acer.

BOTTOM LINE: IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH REPLACING THE WIFI CARD DO NOT ORDER THIS LAPTOP BECAUSE THE WIFI IS UNUSABLE.

Be careful when ordering the 7260 WiFi card, I accidentally ordered the non M.2 version. Newegg was not helpful and told me there isn't an M.2 version of the 7260 which is wrong, it is just rare. The 7265 is exclusively M.2 so be safe and order that if want Intel.

Got the Killer N1525 is on its way, lets hope it helps. I'll report back...

It is probably depends how far or close you are from the router. I am having similar issues as SeatleMat, Ipad, iphone still connecting comfortable, but the laptop rarely and if so will loose internet connection. My intel 7265 adapter is arrived, just needs to be installed, hope it will solve the problem.

another question: has anyone with a Nitro tried the Win 10-previews? The update notofication just popped up this week and as well as I am tempted to try Win 10 as soon as it is released, I am also worried about the Acers programms (Dust Defender and stuff) not being available yet.

so any experience with Win 10 and maybe a VN7-791G would be very welcome.

My laptop is died, is there any official writings that customers can open the laptop to change HDD, memory, etc..? It has unfortunately signs that I opened I am afraid they might deny to change in Warranty.

Check if user manual has instructions on how to upgrade RAM and HDD. If they do, that implicitly proves that they do accept it.
I don't think there will be a problem anyway - Acer always had a policy that meant you can upgrade parts (hence no warranty seals) and as long as it's not your upgrade or upgrade attempt that broke the laptop, they would not cause problems with service and support.

    Hello!
I would like to ask that all v17 or v15 nitro notebooks are "black edition"? Or a certain configurtion has this name?
One more question for today: The v17 or v15 series can change their fan speed independently from each other(left and right side fan)?

    @susnament
Black Edition comes with DustDefender and CoolBoost technologies. Also, AFAIK, all Black Edition models are equipped with Core i7/i5-xxxxHQ (not ULV) and NVidia GTX 860M/960M.

Fans are independent from each other. Only left fan is working on low load.

    Hey guys,
Does anyone has any idea on how to install the newest Generic Intel 4600 HD Graphics Driver?
I tried the workaround described on Intel's website, but no luck.

My card is a Qualcom Atheros 61x4 and I'm experiencing high dpc latency and audio glitches when transfering file with wireless lan (high speed uploading of a big file to another pc in my local lan)

The problem do not happen when on wired conection. That bug is very annoying since I cant' make any backup while using the pc.

Can someone try if they experience the same problem (just try to listen to any audio while uploading a file to a local destination)

If it's impossible to solve the problem, can you suggest me a good and reliable replacement wifi/bt card?

    thank you!

@Edgar83 Oddly I have the same issue in a completely different Acer notebook with a different card (Intel 7260).
Does it happen on 5GHz band or 2.4GHz or both?

No problem on my side with the Intel 7265 that came with my Nitro.

I followed this thread from the start and nobody had the same problem yet... I'd ask RMA if I were you. You have no hints that a wireless card swap would do the trick...

well, new Broadwell-quads are just showing up. and to be honest: the upgrade is IMHO not worth waiting. the first tests I read show, that the i7-5700 is roughly equivalent to the i7-4800 in terms of performance. consider also, that most games will be GPU-limited and you are better served with a "old" version with Haswell - if you get it cheaper.

    regarding wifi:

I've changed to intel AC7265 and although the conection is now good and not droping and full bars all around the house but still the performance according speedtest.net is at best 5mbps when 4 years older acer 3820tg notebook gets 14mbps in the same spot another room, iphone5 same ~15mbit

    latest intel drivers
    what could be wrong?

well, at least next to router I've got those 20mbps

    Wow long thread.

Had a good look through it but bottom line is, is the Acer Aspire V Nitro VN7-791G Laptop, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB + 60GB SSD, 17.3", Black £799.95 worth my money. Im not really a gamer and would be using it for photo editing with Photoshop and Lightroom, running multiple programs, watching films, listening to music and internet browsing.

Just want something a max of £800 with a 17inch glossy screen and something thats quick doing the above.

It seems the drivers for windows 8.1 were bugged

The biggest problem with this laptops WiFi is not the WiFi card itself but the placement of the second antenna placed right next to the right hand palm rest internally.

It's quite an easy fix for those who know how to open up laptops since NGFF antennas are pretty cheap on eBay but despite the fact, the longest NGFF antenna on eBay is only 8 inches thus even with relocation of the antenna it can only reach up the bottom back on the LCD lid and not the top of the LCD lid so at best only marginal improvement to the WiFi signal with mod.

Ask the author of NFC (Notebook Fan Control) if he could add a fan profile for the Acer Nitro series, it'll be much better than having the fans running at maximum all the time.

@Jimbo Mahoney I am following your instructions on how to tweak the CPU and GPU for the best gaming performance, yet I can't figure out how to undervolt the CPU in Intel XTU as there's a lot of tabs and it is my first time using the program. MSI Afterburner and the BIOS hyperthreding were easier to do.
Please simple steps guide would be great.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hey guys,

I have bought SSD and hddcaddy for my nitro 17".

It is easier to put ssd instead of the dvd-rom than to disassemble everything, put ssd inside and hdd into the caddy. The question is, does anyone know if the SATA for the dvd-rom is the same speed as the one for the internal drive?? Or is it slower?

    Heya,

    See this post here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/new-acer-aspire-v-nitro-series.759420/page-168#post-10007911

Basically, I just turned down the dynamic CPU, cache and graphics offset voltages while testing stability with a program like Prime95 / Intel Burn Test etc. I'd advise 10-15 mV at a time until it crashes.

For example, I think I got down to -100m mV before it would crash almost immediately, then I went back to -85 mV, where it would crash after a few minutes, then -70 mV where it would be stable for maybe 30 minutes.

Eventually, I settled on - 60 mV where it was stable for hours and doesn't crash ever during use.

    Hope that helps!

Temps are given in the post I linked to.

Right now, sitting with Intel Burn Test and Kombustor's Furmark running, both CPU and GPU reach 87 'C. CPU is limited to 28x and the GPU doesn't throttle.

If I let the CPU go to default (i.e. allow up to 35x) , then both CPU and GPU head to 92 'C and the GPU starts throttling big time.

Hello, i own a Thinkpad W520 for a very long time now, i think it's time to find it's successor.. If possible with better graphics! First i looked over MSI GE but then found these Acer..

Which seem to have better fan (management) and also heat less. But many users had to use warranty from what i read (well, Acer doesn't have the greatest name..) so i'm kind of worried.

Also, to get very cool temperatures, i should get the i5/850M version. The 850m would definitly be above my current but the i5.. Wouldn't it feel slow compared to my actual i7 2720QM?

Furmark is too harsh, try running a combination of Prime95 + Heaven or Intel BT + Heaven if you prefer that instead; Intel BT is out dated so Prime95 is highly recommended over it.

Theoretically in real world gaming you should be able to do 29x-32x on 3/4 four cores, 31x-33x with two cores and 32x-34x with only one core active without throttling.

I'd also recommend setting the fan de-dusting mode to manual and just run it manually whenever your laptop does a virus scan.

So finally after the broken laptop arrived the new one, this time it has an i7-5500U CPU. It is faster than i5-5200U, but by not too much because here 15W TDP limit is bottlenecking factor and makes CPU throttling. Currently figuring out my voltages with Throttlestop, it helps to get some extra speed. My 3DMark 11 result currently P4772.
I also switched the wifi module to Intel 7265 and I have better signal now, but still not perfekt. I guess this laptop does not have good antennas. The problem is when I gaming the system turning off wifi automatically, than I cannot connect back (says unable to connect), just after full system restart. Well at least after restart connecting, unlike with the original wifi module. Any idea how could I keep active wifi under gaming too?

    I have the Acer Apsire V Nitro VN7-591G with i7 4710HQ and GTX 860M.

When I play a game for 30-45 minutes the computer acts like the ac adaptor is unplugged. The diode that indicates charging suddenly stops emitting light and gameplay is choppy. To get it working again I have to unplug the power cord from the adaptor and from the computer and then plug it back. It never happens when I use the computer for light tasks.

It’s been like this since I bought it but I didn’t want to send it in for service. Any ideas?

Guys what's the best way to clean the plastic surface (near the touch pad) from fingerprints and heat prints? it's driving me crazy even tho my hands are always super clean!

I agree that doesn't sound good.

You could try throttling the CPU using Throttlestop? I always do this when gaming anyway because it provides more thermal overhead for the GPU (960m and i5 in my case). I suggest limiting the multiplier to 28x and playing with different multipliers to see what gives the best overall gaming performance.

Unsure if it will help in your case, but a simple and free test.

Thanks for your reply Jimbo! I changed the setting for Max Processor state to 99% in the power plan. It did the trick, so I guess its heat problems.

Can you post a screenshot of your settings in ThrottleStop? I have no idea what settings I have to change in there.

So I had this acer 15inch version with ULV i5 Broadwell CPU and NVidia 850M gpu. Į bought it from Amazon Germany and I had a huge problem with WiFi. The card was atheros, but not sure if it was the very bad one. Basically when there was load on cpu I had huge ping and very low speeds on WiFi while LAN was fine. I did see that the problem might have been some kind of interference so I went and returned it.
I'm not thinking of just getting the version with full beefy 47w i7 and NVidia 860/960m gpu. Did anyone who has this model and replaced the WiFi card due to some WiFi issues, are there still any increased ping on WiFi when cpu is on high load or maybe this problem was only on the model I had?
