IMO anything larger than 13" (or some 14") can't be considered portable, anything smaller than 13" kills the eyes.

Anyways that's just the way things develop, gadgets tend to grow samller and/or lighter as tech advances.

    Just be patient.

Oodles of Core 2 Duo notebooks will be super cheap now as they close out inventory but all of us want the newer core i3, i5 or i7's depending on what you need.

All the manufacturers are refreshing their inventories. Acer is no exception. As to which I get I do not know. But Acer is being considered depending on price differential and specifications.

Yeah Im in the market for a portable myself. Acer is 13.3" and 3.8 lbs for I presume the 13.3" models. Lenovo is coming in at 12.1" with 3 lbs for an X series. I don't think Acer has anything else coming that is 3lbs do they?

I am shopping around and I know the refresh is coming and the models I am looking at are still out of stock since they are still trying to get rid of the core 2 duo models.

Acer website is down. Thought they may have added the new models. Alas, they didn't and the website came back up.

I guess it is irrelevant since only HP and Lenovo have the one I want right now. Will see what happens by next month.

    Just a tidbit...
    at Digitimes

"Acer on March 23 unveiled TimelineX, an extended series of the existing Timeline ultra-thin notebook. Acer expects its Timeline and TimelineX models together will account for 30-40% of the company's total notebook shipment volume in the future.
The 11.6- and 13.3-inch TimelineX models are produced by Wistron, while the 14- and 15.6-inch models are made by Quanta Computer, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Acer has unveiled four models in the TimelineX ultra-thin series - the 11.6-inch 1830T, 13.3-inch 3820T, 14-inch 4820T and 15.6-inch 5820T. All the TimelineX ultra-thin notebooks feature Intel's mainstream Core ix series processors."

    Great find!
Will the 3802T have the same GPU?
That's the one I have my eye on.
How much bigger is the 14" model compared to the 13" TimelineX?

    Hwupgrade.it tested 4820 and 5820, no info about 3820 :(
Almost in Italy I'm pretty sure that over 3820TG there will be the Mobility Radeon 5470.

Also it says that 4820 is as bigger as 4810! They have the same size :)

Slashgear says they were announced, though the link to Acer's page is down. And OMG the 4820 looks so elegant. Nice upgrade in looks over previous Timeline's.

Acer's website has been down at various time intervals and has come back up with nothing on its website to show for it.

When it comes out I am sure everyone will chime in on here. Travelmate 8x72 will come out later than the Timeline's like last time I presume. They introduced the Travelmate's way later.

SDR should mean "Single Data Rate" against DDR "Double Data Rate", SDR can write only a word for each clock cycle against 2 words of DDR.

    I think it's a GPU-Z error...

The first and third links basically copied and pasted the article on Acer's website posted on March 22. The second doesn't outright copy the article but sort of paraphrases it. Answer to your question: outlook not so good...but I'd like to hope that I'm being overly skeptical and Acer will officially unleash this baby today/tomorrow.

    from the german acer website.
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 mit Switchable™ Graphics Technologie, bis zu 4901 MB HyperMemory™ (1024 MB dedizierter DDR3 VRAM, bis zu 3067 MB shared), unterstützt Unified Video Decoder (UVD), OpenEXR High Dynamic-Range (HDR) technology, Shader Model 5.0, Microsoft® DirectX® 11, OpenGL® 3.1, OpenCL™ 1.1(* hängt von der Größe des Arbeitsspeichers ab)

clearly says ddr3 memory, guessing its the ATI hypermemory thats tricking the gpu-z.

still waiting till there is an i5-540/20m in them.

Now that we've seen pictures/videos of all three models... can anyone explain why the 3820 has 2 vents while the bigger models only have one?

In other words, why don't all 3 models have 2 vents?

    More cooling the better, no?

I mean, if they can fit 2 vents on the 13.3" model, it seems weird that the bigger models only have 1 vent.

I don't know if the larger units do, but the 3820TG is supposto have two (count them - 2! ) heat sinks, each with its own low-power fan. This has gone a long way to putting my heat concerns at rest. No one who has handled these (still only a few, I know) has said anything about heat.

The 2 vents are for the 2 heat sinks and dedicated fans I would guess. This unit is reported to run 66% below the energystar standard. No small feat in a 13.3" machine.

    Bronsky

Edit: @flyingyume $1,669 seems high for the 4820TG.

ic, then assuming that $1669 is singapore dollar, this would be about 1187 USD which makes more sense.

Dont think so anymore, from the italian review seems that the other vent doesnt have a heat sink. Looks like the cpu/gpu share the cooling unit.

edit: had a look at russian video again, think its 2 heatsinks :D

I think I read about dual heatsinks, each with its own low power fan, in one of the translations I read. I remember being impressed when I read it

    Bronsky

@n1c0 - nice find. This one looks like its actually for sale. I clicked on the next couple of screens and it sure looked like you could buy it. Is there a shipping date on the site. I didn't see one.

Makes sense to release the low spec models first. That way, the lowest prices get anounced first.

899 Euro for 430M? I guess 540+5650 would be ~$1400.not that cheap and internal frame is plastic! I remember they used all metal frame in 3935.

Just finished reading this entire thread--took me three days in between work and kids--thanks Bronsky for pointing it out to me. :)

So it sounds like its down to the 3820 or the Sony Z for me...

It's been mentioned a few times in this thread, but I'm surprised that there's not been more clamor about the lack of an ODD in the 3820. Granted, I have no experience with portable ODDs, but to me, this seems like a major minus in the 3820 column--sort of kills some of the portability. Are portables slower than their integrated counterparts, since they're attached via USB?

Sounds like the i5 540m + ATI 5650 is the best configuration on the 3820 given the potential heat concerns. Has anyone seen the option to get the 3820 with 6GB of RAM rather than 4?

And is the ATI 5650 really that far ahead of the Nvidia GT 330M? Especially if you have the 330M paired with the i7 620M that can come in the Sony Z? Don't know a whole lot about GPUs admittedly. But according to www.notebookcheck.net, the two GPUs handle some high-power games like Risen and Crysis fairly similarly (in terms of frames per second) when on high detail settings:

Wake me up when the TRavelmate 8x72 comes out and if they have a core i7 640LM or better. If not, then Acer wont get my business and I'll prolly go Lenovo X201s after waiting for a price drop. $1394 is just too pricey right now.

$100 reduction in a month in price, but it ain't dropping any further and supply is very limited and tight right now.
