I have it, awesome ssd.

I also will be getting the Intel X25-M 160GB G2. Yes, it's fairly expensive, but I'll have this laptop for 4 yrs or so. I don't think a couple years in I'll think, "Man, this hard drive is still smokin', but I really wish I had saved my money!" I'm sold on the Intel SSD. Now it's just a matter of whether the price of the Acer 3820TG + the Intel SSD is a better overall performance vs. value than the Asus UL30VT-A1. Of course there is also the Sony Z out there to tempt me! Anyone know what brand SSD the Sony uses and how it compares to the Intel? I can't seem to find any specific specs anywhere.
-
IMHO the processors alone make it better than the ul30vt.
The vaio Z is very nice. It even includes a disc drive. Price is killer though. -
Will definitely be putting an SSD in mine once I get a hold of the laptop. I'll probably drool all over it for a day or two before swapping in the SSD and doing a fresh install of Win7.
-
No, it does not. You named programs that Mobilemark uses in different modes. This bench could be done in reader mode with min contrast, just to show that 8 hours is possible. I'll better wait for more complicated reviews to make a choice between 3810tg will 9 cell and 3820.
-
The Sony Z uses a Samsung SSD which is supposed to be high quality. It is specially for the Z, so no upgrading SSDs available. I don't know how the Samsung compares to the Intel, but one reviewer experienced noticable SSD degradation during his tests of the Z. Here is the link--it's a great review: http://www.geekmontage.com/texts/sony-vaio-vpcz1190x-review-vpcz114gxs-vpcz11z9e/
Interestingly enough, the i7-620m in this model doesn't appear to drain the battery any quicker than the i5-540m, nor does it produce more heat. Granted, they're different computers, but I wonder if that means I shouldn't be as worried about having an i7 in the Acer 3820tg... -
X-25M G2 is a great piece of hardware. I have been using one for 4 months now and it is an excellent performer. That said, bear in mind that the Sony Vaio Z comes with (at least) 2 SSDs in RAID, so sequential reads and (especially) writes will easily be much higher...
-
but TRIM does not work with RAID
-
Back to topic please... this is not a SSD thread
-
Can you tell how the build quality is in terms of the case? Is it plastic-ish?
If you hold one end of the laptop, does it flex, or does it feel solidly constructed like a macbook with it's aluminium case? -
what luffy tubby said. but I guess we can expect decent build quality from acer.
-
All I need to know is where do I send my check and when do I get it delivered?
Bronsky
Waiting patiently.
Edit: probably going with the Intel. SSD. Anybody who has put an SSD in, can you use the HD you take out as an external drive run through a USB? Would make a perfect backup. -
hope review of the i7 version comes out so i can see battery life
-
I'm interested in build quality too.
I'm not crazy about the one long mouse button, though I haven't used one like it, so it may end up being a non-issue after all.
Wish acer would put it up already... -
Put what up? The new timeline x series won't be available to the US market until mid April.
-
He means put up the specs and pricing and availability. We don't care so much that we can buy it today; we care to know when we can buy it and how much we will have to give up to get it.
-
Everyone behave!
Lots of people are getting a little antsy so just relax
Wish it was out now but what can you do specs and price will be available soon. -
Don't worry. Later today we will all ... oh nevermind.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
NOT TIME YET! -
You guys kill me..lol
-
Love it!
-
nice !
How the quality of the screen with the contrast and colors ?
how high is the level of reflection ?
How long battery life with the i7 620 ??
-
So these awesome Acer laptops will be available in mid-April? Why didn't you just say that earlier then...
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Don't worry. Later today we will all be happy.
-
later today? how??
-
So let me get this straight: The Aspire 5740g only came out like what, two months ago and it's already being replace with the TimelineX? Good for me since I haven't gotten a laptop yet, but for others who went for the 5740g I can imagine them to be a little pissed.
-
You'll catch on... eventually.
-
please tell me!!
-
If you've been following the thread, you'd know that Jay's being saying that exact same sentence at the beginning of every day.
So now it's confirmed for US in mid-April? I never saw this posted, what source is that piece of info coming from? -
IKilledYourHamster Notebook Evangelist
it's just a guess based on past releases, i think.
-
I hope the screen is solid enough and well protected. Yesterday I had my hands on a Vaio Z (not the latest one though) and it flexes like crazy, some reviews state that the screen is the most vulnerable point of the latest Z, there's even a video on Ytube where this flex can be noted.
-
Thanks for taking the time to write about your timelineX. Nice promotion from your Wireless company. You highlighted all my concerns about the Acer: Keyboard, Screen and Weight. Here in the US, the price of the Acer and the Sony Z11 will probably not be that far apart. You can buy the base model Z11 from Sony CTO for $1,899. With Windows Pro-64, I7-640, 6GB DDR3, Carbon upgrades you can buy this model for around $2K after discounts. I am assuming that the Acer, released in the I7-620M/HD 5650 configuration, will cost around $1.2K. If you add an Intel X-25 160GB SSD, add another $475. That makes a difference of $250 between comparable models.
The GPU is the real difference between the 2 device's. The HD 5650 benchmakrs nearly 800 points higher than the Sony's GT 330M in 3DMark06. It supports DX11 and should run cooler than the NVIDIA GPU. There was some concern about the ability of Acer to design a thin enclosure for the HD 5650 that would not turn it into an oven. Your initial impressions are good to hear on the heat issue.
That brings the decision down to a trade off of screen quality, keyboard and portability for a significantly more powerful GPU, an SSD with an extra 40GB and trim support and a couple of hundred dollars less plus any discounts you can add-on. I am still leaning toward the Acer. It will all depend on availability. I notice that we are seeing all 4820TG's becomming available. I haven't yet seen any 3820TG's. Availabilty might become the real issue eventually. Your time is greatly appreciated.

Edit: Zeroshock III 13" looks nice too. -
The new SONY-Z is a beautiful looking new laptop but is just way to expensive,
me I'm just looking for a secondary laptop that won't sacrifice to much performance while being in a small form factor.
I'm with you Bronsky the 3820TG is what I have my eye on + DX11 will just be icing on the cake. -
Did we get happy yesterday?
-
They won't be available at microcenter ;(

Happy is when the 1830t is in my hands, and my 3810t is sold in order to pay for it.
-
Seems like you folks are enjoying these little postings.
But somehow, I've been finding them annoying, not amusing.
I'm not a cranky guy.
Just like for our forums to be pretty much on-topic, not folksy.
No need to further comment.. its OK. -
Anybody knows which ULV Arrandale processor will be used in the 1830T?
-
Because of the smaller 11.6" design factor, I think the i5m will be too hot.
So I'm guessing the slower cooler i5um will be the processor of choice. -
so this is the BIG news?
its coming out in mid april? in Canada/US?
if it is im preparing a dancee -

Core i5-520UM. 1.06GHz stock, up to 1.86GHz with Turbo Boost. Hopefully there are versions with Core i7's (specifically the 1.33GHz Core i7-660UM
)
-
Hopefully... Will the i5-520UM be any faster than SU7300?
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
I would say yes thanks to the new architecture even though it has a slowe clockspeed. -
I don't know if it's going to be much faster. The new architecture is bout 20% faster; so it events out when you consider the slower clock speed.
-
I agree with yus9, please stop filling this thread with useless &/or dishonest crap.
Anyway. Of course!! 3820TG is what rocks! They're all good but what makes this one the unanimous winner is the lightweight. The 3820TG is a 4 pound packet of epic win. lol
Btw, don't know if this has been posted already but its the singapore offer:

Hopefully the 3820TG will be sold in North America. If not, that would be a catastrophe.

How can you be so selfish to stop the guy -who has no other hope in his life except of commenting in this forum and waiting for 1830- from commenting?
Don't worry Jayayess,keep on commenting.... -
Why do you say that it is not switchable graphics. How could Acer claim 8 hour battery life in the 3820TG if it didn't have some form of switchable graphics?
On the "thread", given the waiting game we are all playing, I think the thread has stayed mercifully "on point". If you want to see a wandering thread go check out the Asus 30ULJT thread.
I wonder if units will actually be delivered on the 12th in Singapore? The funny thing is that here in the states, they will just show up on amazon one day. I'll have mine 48 hours later.
Bronsky
We'de better get them soon, I'm toying with the idea of tuning up my 1410T with 4GB DDR2 800, 40 GB Intel SSD and 16GB SD card. I'de rather be putting a 160 GB Intel SSD in the 3820TG. -
Is that Singapore dollar? Online conversion tells me it will be equal to $1k USD. Awesome..
