If HP refreshed the 13 that would be worth waiting for. I am concerned that they are going to make a new 14 and 17 and drop the 13.
-
Apparently the HP 17 is coming in May according to this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=476659
The specs so far look promising. -
Well, nothing out of expectation for a notebook in that price range.
-
well i was really expecting something better, will be using this laptop outdoors a lot so i am in need of a decent display.
maybe ill try the keep my eyes on the travelmates with matte screens and/or the aspires with gamut
though the timeline X is still on my list -
I remain undaunted.
-
when you came back to school? and when you have holidays? I'm sorry but i'm not american, so i don't know such date
-
All right. I just noticed the 15.6" 5820TG is in stock and shipping from komplett.no with HD5650:

Nice to see the TimelineX series becoming more and more available by the hour!

EDIT Ooops nevermind, I just saw this has been posted already. We need a delete button >_<
This might be relevant for Bronsky and anyone waiting for Core i7 versions of the laptop. It shows some guy taking apart the laptop to investigate if he could actually switch the processors (and I think he was bored lol)
http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=232&t=1504719&r=2&last=18836200
At the end he says Core i7 620m should be installable, but not the quad core i7s (due to the size of their heat sinks needed). It looks rather tedious though, so you guys might just want to go with GenTech customization instead
-
I've contacted my retailer - who has the Timeline X series i5 430M + HD 5650, some of them has 8Gb) - I was told they might have new infos about upcoming models in 1,5-2 months.
The german 3820TG owners reported no heat issues so far (by so far I mean friday, I haven't read german forums since then).
I also believe - if I recall correctly - one of the german site's reviewers signaled via forum that they'll test the 3820, and was curious about what aspects the forum members would wanted to have the 3820 tested in. -
Benchmarks that stress the core and GPU so we can see the efficiency of the cooling. Wouldn't mind seeing basic 3D Vantage and 3DMArk06 scores. Would like to know how many frames the unit can make in Crysis at native resolution.
I would prefer buying a unit with the I7-620M rather than trying to upgrade it after buying it new.
-
but the question is when this i7-620M unit come out?

No body knows! Cept Maybe Mr. Acer. -
I have a secret guys. I am Mr. Acer. And too bad, I will not release the Timeline X models in the US. Muhahahahaha. Let's see how long you can wait now, muhaahahaha.
-
I think it's pretty bad that I'm planning out the accessories I'm getting for the TimelineX as a form of procrastination from my exams...
I have no life. >_< -
Got reply from Acer India marketing
"Hi
Expected to be launched in India next month.
We will announce the config options then. " -
I hope you die a painful death.

The Timeline's are already released in the US, typing on one now. -
Yeah, but x > non-x.

He has it in his profile pic. The Timeline's been released for a few years now

I think it'd be most important to know how loud/hot the 3820TG gets with the 5650 on vs off. If most of the time it's off and the laptop is pretty cool, then I can deal with it being a little hot/loud when I'm gaming. But on the other hand, I'm concerned that the laptop might not be designed well enough for sustained use of the 5650 and might cause problems in the future. Also, I'm guessing the 5650 will easily take the price over $1000 for the 3820. Seems like even the 5470 is significantly faster (~60%?) than the 310m in the Asus ul30JT so barring any really horrific build quality issues the 3820TG seems like the better choice even with 5470. And it just might be first to market to boot
. I'm still feeling a little unsure of Acer's general quality but hopefully some nice reviews and in store models can help with that.
-
seems like you are a pessimist =)

"and we have 620M+HD5650 in Singapore, but only in Singapore"
I live in Singapore and just curious how to go about buying this 3820 unit. Best Denki, Sim Lim, Funan or similar? Price? Thanks, Rob -
Just got my 3820TG in SG. The HD5650 heats up to about 60C to 64C during games. I am more concerned about the i7-620M because the temp can go up to >75C. Room temp is about 30C.
-
Nice, you want to do a quick review for us? Pretty please? Really want to know about the screen, the keyboard, build quality, and gaming performance.
-
60 to 64C during games? That's amazingly cool, you need to overclock it.
-
Any benchmark you want me to run?
Two things that I don't really like about the 3820TG - the screen and keyboard.
The screen has poor viewing angles and keys on the keyboard are kind of wobbly... guess I am too used to the X200 I have been using for the past year.
Other than that, the 3820TG is pretty good. I get about 6900+ for 3DMark06 at 1280 X 768 and the i7-620M manages to turbo up to 3.06 - 3.20 GHz most of the time. 3.33 GHz is kind of rare... -
Guess the separate coolers for the i7-620M and HD5650 helps to keep the GPU cool...
-
Crysis and 3DMark Vantage are good tests.
It looks like the 13" is exactly what I thought it would be - great hardware for the form factor, with good cooling but a somewhat poor screen and keyboard.
This thing looks to have the Alienware m11x begging for mercy, and that's just at stock clocks.
Incidentally, the 13" looks to have better cooling than the 14". -
Thanks for your input arclord, repped.
-
arclord, did you buy your 3820 from NYP?
-
I am recently wondering about screen quality.
arclord: is it that bad? besides viewing angles, how does it score in, say, contrast and colours range? if you assign MBP and sony a value of 10, how would you score it? 4 or 7?
bronsky: i suppose it'll have more or less the same screen as your timeline, how do you judge it?
how do you guys think it compares to the asus ul series (both judging on reviews or real life experience)?
Since it'll be for some a buy that'll have to last for around 3 years I believe screen quality is a major factor. In this sense I could compromise on performance given a 8+ hours battery.
I am trying to index the part numbers for much easier web searches: maybe together we can do it well
13.3"
LX.PTC02.056 (NO ati, 320 GB, i3 330M, 6 cells)
LX.PTB02.114 / LX.PTB02.174 (HD 5470, 500 GB, i3 330M, 6 cells)
LX.PTB02.178 (HD 5470, 500 GB, i5 430M, 6 cells
LX.PTB02.073 (HD 5470, 640 GB, i5 430M, 6 cells)
LX.PV102.063 (HD 5650, 320 GB, i5 430M, 6 cells)
LX.PV102.161 (HD 5650, 640 GB, i5 430M, 6 cells)
LX.PV102.015 (HD 5650, 640 GB, i5 430M, 9 cells)
There are more.. now no time. Any body help? Is it useless? (Searching on google with part numbers gives you much better results!)
By the way, it seems like there is a sense to it, last number seems to be the country, last three numbers only minor changes (battery cells included), etc. we'll see. -
my order for the notebook was cancelled by the store due to lack of stock, they said they sold more then they had, already returned the money
right now I'm liking this because I found a store in germany selling i5-430M and HD5650 for 797 euros,
1deins.de/?artikelId=NOTACER382014 -
Unfortunatelly, the german site only has the HD5470 version of the 3820, hope they lay their hands on the HD5650 equiped one, so they'll get to review it.
-
Not great news about the display and keyboard but those things are so subjective. For instance, the display on my 1410T is fine for my uses. I would assume that the 3820TG will be no worse. Opinions on the keyboard have varied widely.
With the temps that are being reported, it looks like the GPU could be an overclocker's dream. I doubt you will get much more from the CPU but it looks like it won't add to the heat problem.
My issue is increasingly becoming one of timing. If we are talking the fall for this to get here, I may be forced to look at the Sony again. I have some major projects scheduled to begin in a couple of months that are well beyond the range of my little 1410T. Till then, I will get back into my "patience" mode.
Bronsky
Thanks for the review arclord. Which store did you buy from in Singapore and I wonder if they will ship to the USA? -
Not sure about Sony, but the LCD for the 3820TG is quite sharp if you are looking straight at it. But once you look at it from the left or right, dark colors don't look too good but I guess TN panels are like that. I would rate it a 5.5 - 6.0.
-
Viewing angles are not really an issue for me, since most of this display's use will be at my desk. I will use it for presentations/demonstrations but mostly with a projected image or smartboard hookup.
What is your issue with the keyboard? Is it any different than any other Acer timeline? If you're comparing it to your Lenovo X200, I can understand your dissapointment. The X200 probably has the best keyboard on the market in a sub-notebok.
Thanks for your time. If you ever have a spare half-hour, it would be nice to have benchmark scores for 3DVantage and 3DMark06 in native resolution with temps ranges during the tests. (I know, I'm a pain in the butt).

Im posting the hungarian market related part numbers.
LX.PV102.082 (HD 5650, i5 430M, 4GB, 320GB HDD, 6 cell)
LX.PTB02.144 (HD 5650, i3 330M, 3GB, 320GB HDD, 6 cell)
LX.PTC02.024 (GMA 4500M, i3 330M, 4GB, 500GB HDD, 6 cell)
Im a bit confused, since last week the retailer had no HD5650 equpied 3820 models, today the prices and model numbers remained unchanged (havent watched the part numbers last week so that might changed), however, the first two models specs sheets claim theyd come with the HD5650 (LX.PV102.082 = 3820TG-434G32MN, LX.PTB02.144 = 3820TG-333G32MN) but I think it might be a typo because the model numbers wouldnt refer to the HD5650, that should be something likeG64M or G64Mn and not the mentioned 32MN ones (I believe the model number for the i5 430M+HD5650 was 434G64MN, and the i3 330M+HD5650 wyas 334-G64MN)
I cant decide whether I should I wait for the i5-520M/540M CPU to show up, or just go for the 430M with the possibility of a later upgrade. -
Well, its another Monday...and for whatever reason...I am again hopeful that there will be at least an announcement on a US release. Come on, Acer!
In regards to your question kiskapu, I have been mulling over the same question for when the i5-430 is inevitably released first in my area.
I am certain I will just take the i5-430. Any performance gains between the i5-430 and 520-540 are going to go unnoticed in anything but benchmarks...and simply not worth the extra wait to me at this point. -
Crysis @ 1280x720
Medium ~26.6
High ~15.9 -
I guess I am not used to the wobbly keys on the 3820TG.
3DMark06 @ 1366x768
3DMark Score: 6989
SM2.0 Score: 2631
SM3.0 Score: 2888
CPU Score: 3019
Starting temp is 51C as recorded by GPU-Z but it doesn't seem to capture the temp during 3DMark06.
Despite the LCD and keyboard, I still think the 3820TG is a pretty good notebook. -
can anyone tell me if either the 3820 or 4820 will be available in the us anytime soon? i cant find anything on them about their US release
-
No new information at this point. Patience, patience, patience I guess.
-
Im a bit surprised, I thought itd perform better playing Crysis, AFAIK Crysis is CPU intensive as well so I thought the CPU was the bottleneck, but You do have the 620M right, shouldn't it do better?
For my main use the 430M would be fine, it's just that I planned to do some light GTA IV and other CPU+GPU demanding gaming, so I thought in that aspect I could took advantage of the 520M/540Ms speed, but know that I've seen benchmarks on Crysis, I wonder how the 540M would handle the game, maybe its not worth the wait (someone please tell me Im wrong).
Ive seen videos of notebooks with 430M+GT330M playing GTA IV at 1366*768 medium/high, dont know why the 620M+HD5650 combo wouldnt do better on Crysis (or other CPU dependant game), if not for throttling (hope thats not the case). -
It appears that www.notebookcheck.net has gotten some detailed information on the entire new Acer lineup (including the Timeline X models) apparently they also had hands on time with the notebooks.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NBC-Onsite-Acer-s-Notebook-Lineup-2010.28995.0.html
At the very least we can hope for some in-depth reviews and benchmarking soon I hope. -
ok. thanks guys. i really want to get one for college next year, but i cant wait too much longer than mid may before i have to decide
-
Interesting, does this apply only to the 11.6''?
-
Thanks for running the benchmarks. ~7,000 Marks out-of-the-box is a very nice score. The Idling temp looks fine as well. The 3820TG should OC quite well for the gamers in the group.
The performance on Crysis is really not that bad when you consider that an Asus G51 (I7-720QM(6MB Cache)/GTX 260M only manages 20.31 FPS on high settings, with no AA.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/g51j-core-i7,2471-5.html
With more RAM and OC'ing the GPU, the frame rate will probably get close to running the game smoothly. For my needs, the stock performance on native resolution is fine. It would be fun to see how high you can get the benchmarks on this unit.
Guess I'll wait some more.

I interpreted those to be the components and options that the entire series would share...but I could be mistaken.
