And more importantly, from the german reviews (I hope google translate doesn't let us down..) it also seems very quiet too.. plus they don't complain about the screen. I don't know whom to believe about that. maybe only myself when it'll be on the shelves (IF it'll be on the shelves)??

There's a lot to be said for the VAIO Z as well, though. It's probably a greater feat of engineering due to the optical drive and amazingly light weight, but the Acer looks to be a more practical achievement.

Does anyone know if the 3820 has a lighted keypad?
-
Long time lurker, first time poster here. Thanks to your valuable input I'm almost sure that the 3820TG will be my next notebook. But while looking for the right dealer here in Germany I noticed the following configuration that I haven't seen on here yet:
Acer Aspire Timeline X 4820TG-624G16Mns "Il Diavolo"
i7, HD5650 & 160 GB Intel SSD
Hefty price tag of 1299 -

cmon Acer
release the US specs and prices already! -
Can't wait no longer. Sony Z or Lenovo X201, I will pick one.
-
hey guys, is there an official release date for the 5820 in uk? will it be before june? what will be its approximate price?
-
A 3820 il diavolo would be even nicer -
The price is also OK, remember, the Vaio Z ( with i5 if I recall correctly) costs around 1900 EUR in the EU. -
I've been reading reviews of other small Arrendale laptops like the Z and new Fujitsu s760. They have tremendous performance but sound like jet engines under load. Although the X201 is quiet- so it is possible.
I guess this is fine if you plan on using them on airplanes... but any chance the 3820TG will be reasonably well mannered in terms of noise? -
Any chance the 3820 will be sold in the U.S. sometime this year?

I wish I was singaporean.
Fukc Acer. You want money b1tches? THEN RELEASE 3820TG NOW!!!!!!!!! IN THE FUKCING USA!~ -
-
it's probably something about suppliers problem that makes acer take more time to release in USA. I can't think another reason, since it would sell like hot cake there
-
This forum is not only informational but it's helping me study -
Someone should really check the article from Notebookcheck.net here.
Has tons of info, including most specs and prices of these new laptops. -
My guess is that Apple has dibs on the Core i processors. They have more power than any other manufacturer on the market right now and I think demand for these chips was higher than Intel planned for.
-
Apple on has only small piece of the laptop pie.
NO way they get first dibs on any icore CPUs. It's more likely that it's just a supply and demand thing with INTEL not being able to manufacture the 32nm chips fast enough.
Just gotta play the waiting game.

I'm not very discerning so I can't really comment on attributes like contrast and color gamut...sorry -
Thanks arclord, have fun with your nice new notebook

I imagine if you have a 64 bit recovery disc, you can most definitely use the key underneath the laptop to do a clean install. -
I'm an American working in Singapore and understand from Acer they will be releasing the Timeline X models in retail stores this weekend. They have been available at local polytechnic schools for sometime, but I'm not a student, so needed to wait. Anyway, I could use some advice on 2 questions:
1. 3820TG or 1830T? I will keep this computer on my desk at work with external monitor, keyboard and mouse. I travel about 7-10 days a month, so prefer a laptop. The weight of either of these units is terrific, so no preference there. Prefer smaller, but not willing to sacrifice MEANINGFUL performance to get smaller. 99% of the time I'm using MS Office, Internet or video/photo. Rarely anything too sophisticated. I'm not a gamer, so don't care about that. I'll max out HDD and get 4GB Ram. Any advice on which unit and which config (5650? i5? i7? etc) would be appreciated.
2. I'll need to upgrade OS to Win 7 Pro or Ultimate. 64 bit version. I already have an external rom and software. Will this be a problem on either unit? Anything in particular I should look for when buying (eg 64 bit Win 7 Home already installed a must or 32 bit version okay)?
Again, I appreciate any advice you can provide. Once I buy, I'll be happy to tell you what I found in the stores regarding specs and prices.
Thanks,
robliv -
Save yourself some $$ and get the 5470. You will be fine with that.
Again, save some $$$ and get the i5.
Once you have it in your hands, please provide us with plenty of unboxing pics (and a vid if you can). Also, please give us your feedback on keyboard quality. Thanks! -
-
@robliv: Given the use that you do, I don't see any particular need of a 3820. In fact, you have plenty of other choices.. Why would you need a dedicated GPU? And what is MEANINGFUL performance for you when using basic programs? IMHO, you could look at previous gen culv processors, specifically in the alternatives of Asus UX30 or UL30a or Sony Vaio Y which are quite cool. You'd get much longer battery life for the flights, backlit keyboard (not in the UL30a), and generally a good business laptop, surely capable of doing all that you seem to need.
ABout the OS. I'm not sure you can use the product key of a computer on a upgraded OS. THe OS disk you have should be NOT OEM, with its own product key, if you wnat to be legal. If you don't (and nobody wants you to) you can do absolutely whatever, why would you think this unit wouldn't run 7 Ultimate well?? -
-
Just noticed the label on the 3820TG box and it states Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
So maybe the 3820TG is supposed to come with a 64-bit OS and the 32-bit OS that I got on mine is some school configured image? -
Great, just great... If the 3820tg by a miraculous act happens to be sold in the USA it will come with windows 7, 32-bit?
Now I gotta spend more money on 64 bit... -
Most new laptops are using 64-bit OS's that are this powerful.
-
I can buy this now here in Sweden:
Acer TimeLineX AS3820TG-434G64N
13,3-tums 16:9 LED
Intel Core i5 430M
4 GB RAM / 640 GB harddrive
ATI HD5650 1GB DDR3
9 cell, 12 hour battery
1.3 MP HD-webcam
Windows 7 Premium 64-bit
It costs 8.990 SEK.
Would you pay 1.250 USD?
I've looked for the UL30jt a long time but it will cost 130 USD more than this one. And might not be better?
And for comparing, the MBP 13' costs from 1670 to 2088 USD. -
Anyone know how loud these are in terms of fan noise? has it been mentioned in reviews?
-
-
Could you answer 3 questions please...?!?
1. Are you buying this from a shop or online ? Links ??
2. What is the make/model no. of the wireless card ?
3. Can you find out the date of availability of the 11.6 1830T from the shop that you are buying your laptop ?
Thanks
