Hi! Regarding your signature; will there be a model like that or is it just you who want it to be like that :p

I'm just curious since I'm interested in buying one of those acer 3820tg, but the 9 cell battery is way too big in my opinion. But with your specs it's a smaller battery and SSD? :)

There is no confirmed 3820TG with an SSD yet. There is a 4820TG named Il Diavilo that has an I7-620M/HD5650/Intel X25-M 160GB SSD.

Just the way I want it to be :D.

The 9 cell battery should be an optional upgrade/accessory. 6 cell is standard.

I plan on removing whatever size HDD I get, putting it into an enclosure, and using that as my external drive for all media/data. In it's place will go an intel SSD for boot-up/programs/games/etc.

I haven't been following new SSD's being introduced on the market these days. Are there any performing as well as the Intel G2? I would love to find something that performs as well with a few more gigabytes. A lower price would not be too bad either. An SSD and ram upgrade will probably be the first things I do to my new 3820TG when Acer decides to sell me one. Suggestions?

Just tested this on my 3820TG - the HD5650 can be enabled without plugging in the laptop.

I don't see many cases where you'd want to enable the 5650 while unplugged, but having the option to is always good ;)

I think your best bet is to wait for the next gen SSDs, which should be premiered later this year. From what I've heard so far, the Intel's drives will get bigger and even faster...

Will come in handy when you are in transport (plane/train/bus/airport) and feel like playing some games :)

I'm being very patient now, but i know as soon as i get my hands on the 3820TG it will have 8GB of DDR3 and an SSD within a day or so. :D So, I guess its an X25-M 160GB. Unless, of course they have a model like the 14" that comes with one.

    Bronsky

While I've been waiting for this, I've tweaked my 1410T and rebuilt a tower for my home computer. I need a new project.

Hey guys, Yahoo! News (Via Engadget) is reporting a shortage of the new Arrandale processors and computer makers bidding up the price so these laptops will (at least initially) end up being more expensive than they need to be.

It probably also explains why we've been waiting for these things for so long! Still going to buy one as soon as it comes over to Canada though. Knowing Canada, by the time it gets over here, the shortage will be long over and the rest of the world will be playing with Sandy Bridge by that time. lol :D

That'd be awesomely expensive around here, lol.

400+€ just for the SSD, and I suspect the 2x4GB modules would set me back another 300€ or so.

You sure love pimping your laptops :p

OMG, I didn't even realize how expensive DDR3 notebook memory was...holy crap. I thought you made a typo but after checking Canadian prices I'm in shock. After spending $300 for 2GB of enthusiast RAM back in 2004 for my first custom built desktop, I stopped caring so much about expensive RAM. The money can be put into much better use for other upgrades.

Yea, unfortunatelly UK has became a technological backwater. MSI GX640 is not even released yet, ASUS G73 is available only in 2 online shops for the highest price in the world... eeh.

I think I'll buy mine from Germany. I found a good rated online retailer selling those for around 730£ including shipping to UK. And thats with 5650. It's in stock and ready for immediate dispatch.

It's fine by me, I'm quite confident I'm pressing "buy" button tomorrow evening.

    @ aphrsk

If you wouldn't mind can you share the name of the etailer (although I have a pretty good idea who that might be) just to make sure ? If you do buy it let us know about the keyboard. I am almost certain it will be the German :(

I just went on skinflint.co.uk and typed 3820tg. Apparently there's 17 German and Austrian shops with it listed, 11 of which seems to have 3820tg already in dispatch ready stock, 4 do UK shipping and 2 have an option to see their site in English. So it narrows the choice down for me :).

As for the keyboard I'm also 99% sure it's German but I'm not going to wait for 2 months only to have a chance of buy this same laptop with UK keyboard for probably something like 949-999£. Also this acerdirect.co.uk site that satchef1 linked before has a ridiciolously huge warehouse with acers only located 20 mins drive from where I live. So I guess in some time I might pop in there and try to convince them to sort me out some spare keyboard.

Let us know how you get on. Quite tempted to do the same thing, hovering over the buy button on an M11x at the moment but a more powerful machine for less? Yes please :)

Any warranty concerns? Or will Acer UK repair it quite happily? Also, would I be correct in assuming that if I change the keyboard language to UK English it will act as if it's just a wrongly labelled UK keyboard? I could cope with that, can touch-type fine (some punctuation might be a struggle though).

If you set the keyboard layout as UK english the keyboard will behave just like a normal UK one would.

Acer has one year international warranty, though I'm not sure how will it play out.

I'd rather not have any problems with the laptop though :p

Here is an update on PCI-E issue on the 3820TG:

I updated the BIOS to V1.08 and turned off power management for the PCI-E when the laptop is plugged in. Guess what, 3DMark06 went up from 6989 to 7455.

    3DMark06 @ 1366 x 768

    Before
    3DMark Score: 6989
    SM2.0 Score: 2631
    SM3.0 Score: 2888
    CPU Score: 3019

    After
    3DMark Score: 7455
    SM2.0 Score: 2661
    SM3.0 Score: 3270
    CPU Score: 3076

Max temp for HD5650 seems to have got up a little (68C) but it could have been due to the hot weather. I think the initial problem was caused by PCI-E power management where the PCI-E to the HD5650 was reduced from x16 to x1 under certain situations.

For reference, my brothers 8930g (stock) did 6000 in 3dmark06 with a 9600m GT.

Kind of amazing that this thing can be had in 13" with probably 2x the cpu power, 4x more battery life and 25% more GPU power..only two years after the 8930g release.

Great news, and just as expected, given same hardware the performance should be the same within a 5% error margin.

Slight flex on the top right zone, probably around the "u i j k" zone as said in the review.

So far so good, living up to the expectations.

Let's see availability dates and price...

I have a laptop cooler to cool the bottom. However, I feel that the i7-620M isn't an ideal CPU for the 3820TG cause it runs really hot when it turbo up to 3.20 - 3.33 GHz. The i5-540M or i5-520M would have been a better choice.

Do you guys think that when travelmates come out it will be technically possible in theory to swap the gloss screen in timeline for a matte one? It's a totally theoretical question apart from the price of such endeavour or the potential availability of screens.

    ht tp://skinflint.co. uk/eu/a520581.html

No, there's not duty for trade within EEA (EU + Norway and Switzerland). Dont know how it is for buying from EEA from outside EEA but I doubt anyone would go for it as European prices are usually signifiicantly inflated by VAT and ridicilous import customs.

I was just thinking, a 3810 US or UK keyboard would fit this as its the same right? No changes / same part number? If so there on ebay for 20 USD....

And Window 7 could be changed to English no worries i think. Hmm got me thinking now.
