The problem is just the name Acer, for many persons the name Acer stands for bad quality. Replace the Acer label with HP or Dell as example, a lot of _privat_ persons will rank the built quality as excellent. ;) The same modell with an Acer label wil only get a "not bad but also not good".

Last time I check the ones doing the designing and manufacture of laptops are ODMs like Wistron, Compal, Quanta.
OEMs only sell branding get your facts right on built quality.
    Model matters not brand.

Why so? 1.8kilos is the laptop then the power supply 300 grams? and I guess the rest is made up in package and materials etc, Not like its a heavy package :)

My Gateway here with everything weights like 7 kilos or more !! But then it is a 17"

I'll weight just the laptop with battery and power supply tomorrow so people can get an idea of the full travel weight for this unit.

I'll probably give them a call tonight. I have to wait till around 10 p.m. EST because of the time difference (+12). It's a holiday here in the US so it might wait till tomorrow. Are the operators english speakers? (he said, showing his ignorance in international matters :p ).

I'm having some trouble connecting my 3820TG to my Sony 52W5500 LCD TV. HDMI connected, I get the desktop on the TV, and the TV says it gets 1080p input, but there is a black (actually green-tinted) border around the image (about 75 pixels on both left and right side and about 40 pixels on both top and bottom). There is nothing cropped from the desktop image. It's just not filling the entire screen. The desktop settings are at 1920x1080, so that resolution is basically crammed into something like 1770x1000, and it does not look good. Worse, the image is washed out with grayish blacks. My girlfriend's Asus UL50VT (and the UL30VT that I owned for about a month before I sold it) both work with no problems over HDMI. The picture is fantastic with brilliant colours and deep blacks. (Huge difference! Just connected the UL50VT to compare, using the same video clip.) I also briefly had an Alienware M11x, and that worked with no problems as well, so this is definitely not a problem with the TV. Anyone have any idea as to what might be causing this? (I'm using the dedicated Ati 5650 GPU, by the way. HDMI can't be used with the integrated GPU.)

UPDATE: Using clone mode (same on both laptop screen and TV, at 1366x768) the image on the TV looks better, with deep blacks and all that good stuff. But it fills the exact same area as the 1920x1080 resolution does, ie. about 1770x1000. This is really annoying me now. If I can't get this to work, I'm returning the computer ASAP.

UPDATE 2: Using only the TV as display, setting the resolution to 1776x1000 also makes the image look better, but the black borders and reduced resolution are of course not acceptable.

Odd problem you have, I will test out 1920x1080 via HDMI tomorrow on my LG Flatron M227WD

Maybe try updating to the 10.5 ati drivers? And try a bios update too?

Can I update the ati drivers? Thought regular drivers wouldn't work because of the graphics switch capability. And I've heard nasty things about the BIOS update, concerning fan problems and heat.

1.13 bios is meant to be fine no fan issues, good temps, avoid 1.08. Go into the bios and set the ATI GPU on only and from there you can update to 10.5, uninstall the drivers first to be on the safe side. Once done reset and switch the bios option back to what it was before.

Your issue sounds like a driver issue to me.

OK got my 3820TG finally after waiting since the announcement from Acer :D

    First impressions:

    • Nice and sleek, good business look (Bronsky take note)
    • Little heavier than I expected for 1.8 kilos but still nice
    • Good build quality, little keyboard flex. No squeaks or noises
    • Screen much better than I expected. I expected a super dull POS display from what I heard from others. And reviews.
    • Very quick and super quite (on integrated gfx).
    • Large power adapter, over sized power cable..I guess this is for the 5650...

    Some photos.

[IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

P.S this is my first acer how do I get into the boot screen to select my USB pen drive with Windows 7 ?? Edit: Found it, you need to enable it in the bios and then its F12

Yes bios is in English not German ;) Instructions and start guide are multi language.

Edit: While the screen is super reflective, its brighter than my Gateway P6831fx, but not my 1000HA ;) That little netbook has a super bright matte screen.

I will take some more photos soon just installing the drivers etc from a fresh win7 install. So far so good, reinstalled English Windows 7 Home Premium and active it via phone. No worries there despite the non believers I had before in this thread. Telling me it could not be done.

Just trying to install the intel GFX driver, so far its the default VGA driver :(

I have just updated the bios to version 1.13. Something I aways do is grab the latest release.

    I brought mine here: Acer Aspire 3820TG-434G64n W7HP64 - Notebooks - computeruniverse.net

Shipping was an extra 20 euros for me.

No I'm here in Spain, so shipping would be more expensive if sending it to the USA. Since im in the EU, no extra taxes. The keyboard is QWERTZ (german) So the Y and Z and in different places. I have to put up with this for while till my backlit US keyboard arrives and then the fun begins! Swap and mod it.

    For other's I have started a 3820TG owners lounge.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...nge-info-benchmarks-tweaks-mods-upgrades.html

I will be adding more info, benchmarks, tweaks and overclocking info etc. Refresh the first page of that thread as I will be updating it over the next few days.

Windows experience index rating was nice too. 6.7 for the processor and its only a i5 430m ;) Ram and disk drive were lowest at 5.9

Congraulations! Glad to see you finally got your unit. Nice pictures. You can really see the reflective nature of the display. Encouraging to hear your comments about the display as well.

Was out with family and friends last night for the Memorial Day holiday here in the states. Didn't get the chance to call Singapore last night. Hopefully, I'll have the time to call them tonight. Acerman replied to my FB post and indicated that he did't understand the answer he got from Acer. :D Welcome to the club. He will be following up. Maybe we'll hear something definitive.

Nice job on the Owner's Lounge.

    Bronsky

@Riddhy916 - When I priced a unit shipped from the EU to the US, it was a premium of almost 50%. Actual shipping cost was around $100. I was told that a lot of the taxes, etc., could be refunded after filling out US Customs forms. I have dealt with US Customs and would prefer not to go throught that again.

I'm half tempted just to go bloody take a holiday to Singapore so I can buy one of these.. being in Oz has it's benefits :)

Oh quick question Bronsky where did you get the info that Singapore kb are different to the US layout? I thought it would be the same?

The screen is quite good really, much much better than what I had expected listening to users and reviews from the net. I was expecting the worst and dullest display in my life. Ok Its super reflective, just like my gateway screen. View angles pretty good and the brightness and color seem good to me. I'm 100% happy and ok with it. I've seen better displays sure, but I seen many worse than this.

In my eyes for a 13.3 display I would give this a 7/10. I wouldn't want a higher res as this native res is just perfect for the screen size ;). Higher than this things would start getting too small on a display this small.

I will also try that display tweaking the Germans mentions that improves it quite a bit apparently.

Just installing Stalker. 3dmark 06 benchmarks and watching the temps via HWmonitor ;) will post results in the owners thread.

Oh and thanks for uploading the pics Hendrickson, I can't believe you can put up with the keyboard though :) It would erk me to no end having to wait for the keyboard transplant!

Shame in Oz the Acer site only has the 4820 and the 5820 listed.. no 3820 so we probably won't get it for a while :(

ooh excitement, I'm in the UK and ready to order this if Hendrickson gives a positive report.

what's the problem with the keyboard that you're referring to dacow? just transposed Y and Z? or no backlighting?

Hendrickson, when you can m8, please let us know what the temps and noise are like during/after a gaming session. I plan to play a lot of Left4Dead2 on my laptop.

glad to hear the screen is ok, was very concerned about that.

Oh it will run left 4 dead 2 just fine ;) The unit is very quite, running Stalker it doesn't really make much noise at all. A bit worring really, since im use to my gateways loud fans. Two stalker runs and temps are good. Around 68 cpu and gpu gets up to about 68 degrees too. My ambient room temp is around 30 degrees its hot now in the med coast of Spain.

I'll run a few games soon for a few hours and report back on the temps then.

But so far im impressed! very quite and the temps seem good to me so far.

Ok after non stops benchmarks I got the CPU to hit 81 degrees and the GPU is one cool unit. (Compared to my Nivida 8800 GTS) Maxes out at 71 degrees after many Heaven benchmarks and 3dmark06.

Also this temp is overclocked @ 650 Mhz core and 1050 memory ;) Reached almost 8800 3dmarks06. An i7 620m should crack 9500+ but would be 10 degrees hotter or more.

Oh coming from a 17' monster this unit is so damn quite, so much so I feel as if the fans don't even kick into max speed? Is there program that lets me view the fan rpms?

WOW i am really impressed with the temps man are you in Air con room or what? I really didnt know 5650 and i5 430m ran this cool

also can you run prime95+furmark or just furmark alone and measure the temps?

does it run quiet after the tests you did?

what was the stock clock speeds of the 5650 you received with this unit?

does an i7 620m or i5 540m will increase the temps heavily? are you planning for an upgrade cpu?

can you oc your i5 430m by 300 to 400 mhz is that possible?

An Acer rep on Facebook said the TimelineX models will be released to the U.S. and Canada at the end of June. Probably around the June 27 release of the HP Envy 14.

I don't think it says all that much, other than we will be getting some TimelineX's by the end of June. I have asked Acer Insider to check back with us from time-to-time to let us know which models are comming to North America. So far, it looks like an I3-350M version of the 4820TG with the HD 5650 and an I7-620M version of the 5820TG with the HD 5650. There may be a 3820TG but it looks like the HD 5450 GPU.

are you sure of the models that will come to US? for 3820tg if 5470 comes then it really sucks. also like USA still doesnt have vaio ea with 5650 vaio ec series then asus n82 and n71/n61 ja series i really would love to have a n71ja for entertainment. all good specs are going to europe

Firdouse told me that they have very limited units for i7 620m unit that also worries me a bit i am pretty sure in IT show from 10th june to 13june it will be sold out hopefully if i5 520m comes with a discount then i can replace it

If what Bronsky posted is what's coming to usa, I guess I'll have to go with the disgusting envy 14.
