If I owned a 3820TG we could discuss it on the 3820TG thread. But alas.![]()

so bronsky you wait upto july for 3820tg or june 27 just to buy envy 14?
-
It's a really weird and rare situation, but if you lived here in Portugal you could've already ordered one from german stores. Well, pretty much as Hendrickson
.
Noting that they won't be available in here (Portugal) until at least mid-july, and will probably arrive with the weakest configs only. I guess I can thank the germans for being such laptop w****s
.
-
I was wondering how much i5-520m will be faster than i5-450m.
I ask because in my country (Poland) it is avialable.
ACER Aspire TimeLineX 3820TG-5452G50nks (LX.PV102.184) 4GB RAM -
In most programs they will be identical (450m and 520m) seeing as the only difference is the AES instructions the 520m has. Programs that benefits from the AES instructions will show some performance increase.
-
Unless using apps that benefit from hardware AES encryption \ decryption or VT-d extension, I doubt you'll notice any difference.
I'd say that 95% or more of the users wouldn't notice any difference between them.
PS: damn polski store, doesn't ship to Portugal. The price is somewhat cheaper than in german stores
.
Edit: Just noticed their Turbo-boost amounts to exactly the same clock speed, so edited info accordingly. I doubt you're gonna see any real difference between them. -
Thank you for explanation.
I think that this model is cheap in Poland.
U30Jc with i5-430m without OS cost 3200 (PLN) -
It's funny, I thought I had decided to just wait until the 3820TG got here but seeing the Envy being released, I feel my resolve weakening
. I really like the Envy. I think it is going to have a great display. It will probably perform in the same range as the 32820TG. I also like the MBP like full metal casing. So it's really hard to watch it go by. On the other hand, the Envy is too big and heavy for my likes. So, I will probably keep waiting a bit longer to see what develops. My company has a workstation I can use for now.
The deciding factor will probably be any special offers HP makes on release. When they released the Envy 17 and Pavillions, they had a 25% Bing Cash Back deal. That would be hard to resist if they did it again. I could get the HP for about 3 or 4 hundred less than the 3820TG if you include the cost of upgrading the CPU and the cost of the SSD.
So that's my thoughts. Acer is not making it any easier on me.

It's not just about processor speed. The AES instructions, which are only in the I5-520M and above, affect the speed of certain CPU intensive functions that give it a significant advantage over the I3 or I5-430/450 CPU. Here is an article and quote on the issue.
Notebookcheck: Review Intel Core i3/i5/i7 Processors ?Arrandale?
"As expected, the efficiency of the single CPU has a direct impact on the test's total score. Apart from the "HDD Test Suite", which merely checks the used hard disk's performance and is consequently almost always the same, a constant increase of the Core i3-330M up to the Core i7-620M CPU can be seen in almost all sectors. That is, with one exception: The 620M, 540M and 520M chips show an excellent rate in the " Communication Suite". To be more precise, PCMark Vantage tested coding and decoding of data, data compression, email search and audio transcoding, all of which are very CPU-biased applications. The reason could be special features in the new Arrendale CPUs that can score especially in the cited processes and which have been left out on the smaller chips (new AES instructions, Intel trusted execution technology)."
The 520M has an advantage in data coding, decoding, compression, audio transcoding and email search. It has these advantages even over the I5-450M which is clocked at the same speed as the 520M (the Com. Suite). If I had the option, I would always buy the 520M or above over the lower or even equal powered units. I do a lot of work that is data or communication oriented.
Bronsky
BTW, could you post the model number of the I5-520M so I can search for it (daily
).

Do they ship internationally? Its only 3200zl which is like 950 US, thats not too bad. In the checkout of the store it has a dropdown list with canada in it so im just wondering.
-
Dziekuje xD !

You know guys... I was thinking about the state of the world economy and such, and have an idea why Acer is dragging its foot selling the new lappies in US.
I think... that it's because of the depreciating US dollar. The US dollar was having a hard time recently until the European problems started to prop it up again. Therefore to a global company like Acer, it would probably sell to markets with relatively stable currencies or even appreciating currencies to avoid exchange rate risks.
Just some random thoughts that is Off Topic... sorry -

Good sign?
Though for the i5 520M version seems to be quite a big jump in term of price, $1,259
source: http://www.laptopspec.net/2010/05/a...4g64n2002-13-3-inch-laptop-with-core-i5-520m/
edit: seems like outdated data... -
lol
Here is a graph for ya;
US Dollar is at the same level as it was year and a half ago. And has been rising steadily for the last 7 months. More than likely will resume its rise this and next year. The crisis in Europe is just starting.
The exchange risk argument is flawed imo. -
If you notice from the chart, the USD was on a declining trend until Mar when it started to bounce up again, presumably due to the Euro debt crisis. The declining trend started a long while back and probably, with a big "maybe", Acer decide during a point in time then to delay shipment to US.
-
Unfortunatelly there (in Poland) is no avialable 3820TG with i5-520m
I asked if it is worth to wait for it. -
i think after HP releases envy 14 it will totally kill off the hype for ASUS n82jv for sure and also 3820tg for US customers and HP will definately give good deals on envy 14 as bing cashback last upto july 30th so ppl will have a month
-
I would say that if you can get the 450 its not worth the wait. You can always upgrade to a 540 or 620 if you need the power later on. If you can only get the 430 though you may want to wait. I guess it just depends on what you want to do with your laptop.
-
no. Plus, I just read something that made me believe that the refreshed I5-450M has the comm suite that is in the I5-520M.
-
Care to explain?

Other 13" units.
Sony will offer the 1080p 13.3" display to the US as a $100 CTO option for the Z12 refresh and a new black lid color called Granite. Probably out in a week. I wonder if they'll have the I7-620M as an option again? Still too expensive for mere mortals. Probably still the business machine of choice (my company won't spring for it
).
Also HP seems to have done a good job engineering the I7-720QM in the 13.3" HP DV3-4000. From reviews, it appears to have no heat problems. It has an HD5450 GPU so it doesn't really compete with the 3820TG for Gamer's dollars but the QM processor may make it a real hit for professional use. Lots of professional software is being optimized for quad cores and the HD5450 is sufficient for all but the most demanding applications, even those like CS4+ which tap the GPU to accellerate certain functions. I've been working on a quad core for a week or so in a mobile workstation and I must say, it is really fast. I think if I was an engineering student going to college I would seriously consider one of these because of the great combination of CPU power and portability.
You have to admit, HP has been doing some intersting stuff lately. -
Too bad I've sworn off HP's from too many bad laptops from them.
Still nothing yet on the ACER?
HUH! -
Sig still says waiting ...
I might give the HP TM2 convertible tablet a try and replace the 1410T I am using as a travel notebook now. I have a work station for a couple of months so I am okay for now. It looks like it would make a great presentation device and acceptable field notebook. I am trying my hardest to wait out the 3820TG. Acer isn't makeing it any easier. Not a peep from any retailers.
If anybody stops in Frys or J&Rs in NY, try asking them about a date. -
My 5820TG is now shipped, maybe I'll have it tomorrow, if not I'll have it monday.
-
it´s only 1.6ghz, for not optimized application and probably most games it will be slower than the i5 520M.
-
Only a few tools are able to use more than two cores at the same time in the most engineering "tool boxes" because the tools grow up over years and it is not very easy to divide the task for the calculation in more than one task.
There are also a few companies, which simple say "It is not possible to change the code easily to a multi core version without the risk of unexpected errors at the work process."
Im aperson who uses a lot of engineering tools for the electrical creation, simulation and design. -
USD was trading at 72 back in 2008, now at 86
There is no declining trend going on there
Acer's reasoning has not much to do with the currency fluctuations. It has more to do with what it thinks can sell in the US or other countries. In the US, majority of the buyers of a higher end computer would be those who can spend the money, and those who spend the money are the corporations, which Acer has not much of a say at. HP, Dell, Lenovo, these three big companies would not survive if they did not have corporate buyers.
Acer does not have a strong name in the US yet, they offer cheaper products, sub 1000 for the majority of their offerings, and a new laptop like 3820TG if released at the same time as the rest of the world would have cost 1000+ in the US. US consumer of Acer is not ready for such a price tag, so Acer delays the release to be able to offer a price in the range of 1000, or cheaper. How will they do that? By waiting a few more months, thus the price of the processor etc will be cheaper, so the selling price of the product will be cheaper as well. This also comes to a time when the "back to school" shopping starts. So I am guessing, the new TG models will be here mid-July towards the end of July. Pricing should be around 1099 or less.
It is about how consumers perceive a company, and the image the company presents, that all makes the selling price and quantity.
If companies were always worrying about exchange rates and deciding on their multi billion dollar businesses on these currency fluctuations, they would not have been multi billion dollar businesses. -
I just want to know something. What's better in terms of gaming and gpu accelerated programs(like CS5 and etc), the 5650 on the 3820tg or the GT330 on the vaio z? Also, how does the MX11's GT335 compare?
-
For gaming HD5650 beats both GT330/335, CS5 etc I don't know.
The vaio Z GT330 is also an downclocked version. -
@bolt.pt
When you get some quotes for the 450, please post them here. I'm also interested in buying one from germany, and have zero hope that Acer Portugal will release a good enough version of the 3820.
Also, how do you plan to change the keyboard? Stickers or a 3810 keyboard replacement? -
The Vaio 330M is downclocked, so it's even worse than the normal 330M.
Also, for Adobe software you can't really put the m11x in the same league as the others, as the software MAJORLY benefits from CPU speed, cores and threads.
So, while the gaming difference won't be major (because most games are more gpu-limited than cpu) it'll be noticeably slower than its competitors.
Adobe software and the likes use OpenGL for graphics acceleration, and we'll probably see a slow transition to OpenCL too (especially in software that's also launched for OSX ). Therefore the GPU speed will be pratically the same for all of those, if anything the HD5650 a bit faster (note: some graphics cards might come with DDR2, GDDR2, DDR3 or GDDR3, so look for the ones with GDDR3 as the others will be a bit slower due to lower memory bandwidth).
@mad.maximo
About the keyboard, I've decided to get one with US layout. It might sound weird at first, but if you set the layout to US International you'll get all the accents, tilde, trema, etc just like you would on a normal portuguese one.
The punctuation keys are in a different position than the ones we're used to, but sincerely I find it the best option for me as the placement for the ones I use regularly while programming is way better.
It might take a while to get used to the dwarfed return key though
.
-
so....Fry's will have the 3820TG? For real?
-
I could stop by J&R on June 28, 2010 (monday). I'll see if i can dig up as much info as i possibly can from the manager or whoever can help me there.
-
The TimelineX Series is up on Acer USA Product Page
Unfortunatly, the only specs listed are at most a i5-450m processor and a integrated intel graphics.
Hopefully the product page isn't finished and is changed, but at the moment, it seems the US is only getting the 3820T.
For the 4820, Product Page ,the highest configuration is a 4820TG with i5-450m processor and ATI 5650 graphics, but if I were going to get a 14 inch laptop, I would get the Envy.
I really hope that I am wrong.
-
^That's bittersweet. I5-450M is good, but that 3820 needed 5650!!!
-
I'm not interested in the 14" or 15" Timelines either. What's so hard about releasing the company's best 13" unit configuration here? It is still only the middle of June. It would not be unusual for Acer to put up other configurations as they become available. To be fair, we knew that there would likely be no 13" TG units in the first wave. We were told that they would all be here eventually. I guess we have to see if Acer is going to live up to its word. I really don't see what is so hard about making sure that the US market has a few decent units upon release. You would think that some executive would have picked up the phone by now and said to marketing, get these people a way to buy a few of our 3820TG units - how hard can it be? They made a small volume of high spec units available to a single school purchase program in Singapore, they can do the same here.
It will be interesting to see what happens first ... a 5650 units comes to the US or my patience wears out. Sooner or later somebody is going to come out with a competitive 13" unit.
Hey Insider, the 4820TG 450M/HD5650 model was not on your original list but has shown up on the website. Any chance of doing another model run to see if any 5650 3820TG's are expected? -
just like n82jv and vaio cw with gt330m and ea with 5650
damn US not even getting 5470 for starters
if US gets 5650 3820tg after 1 quater where usually its updated then its a buzzkill still its not certain whether ii will be 5650 it might well be 5470 -
There's a list of the retailers that are getting the Timelines. I thought Frys was on it. It's further back in this thread.
-
Apparently, Acer \ Asus for you americans is just like HP \ Lenovo for us europeans
.
-
At least the Aspire Ones got released today for the US!!!!
lol
someone can just call Acer USA, talk to sales and see if they have more info than a week or two ago. -
Of course you're right. The good news is that they are here. Now we can bug the retailers to order the right units.
Bronsky
-
Wow look at all these configs that Europeans and Asian markets get... Such capable GPU's in small laptops, which is what I'm looking for!
All I can say up yours, president of insert everyone_who_is_not_dell_hp_lenovo in U.S! -
Man o man am I growing impatient.
-
Any idea where we can find prices for these things?
Not showing up on Acer's site -
You have to wait until the retailers get these units before we will know the prices for sure.
@maverickar15
. That was funny.
-
Alright. Hopefully that will be soon.
-
Still the only 3820TG's I see are for Canada...
-
Thanks again.
Bronsky
-
Any idea when that might happen?
Its between this and the Envy 14 for me (I can sacrifice a backlit keyboard) and the Envys are available for order in a little over a week. -
It looks like - if you're waiting for a 3820TG, you might want to order the Envy 14 if you need to buy your laptop soon. I could take a month to get the Envy anyway, then you have 21 days to return it with no restocking fee if you order it from CTO. If there is no 3820TG's on sale by then, at least you'll have the Envy in hand for the fall.
They have listed two models of the 4820TG on the Acer site. We really have no idea who much longer till retailers start putting these on their sites.
