Is being a 3820TG from canada to use in the US okay? What implications to that are there, extra taxes or anything? I would assume the keyboard n all would be the same?
-
I'm really curious to see how the heat management between the 3820TG and 4820TG differs. I'd like to overclock the 5650, but I don't think that'll be practical in the 4820TG without the second heatsink.
-
i am not seeing any 3820tg in acer ca pages
-
If I remember correctly, there was one. We thought it was an HD5470 but I don't think that was every really confirmed. But I do remember that there was one. The Canadian models have bilingual keyboards I think.

The HD5650 doesn't seem to generate a lot of heat, even overclocked. As long as you don't get an I7-620M 4820TG, I would assume that it will be okay. Take a look at Hendrickson's temps from his OC in the 3820TG thread. The only real temp increases I have seen from the GPU was when it was playing 2 games at once.

Well, the word I got from Cyberport was:
Essentially, if someone wants to order that specific 3820TG model atm only by e-mail order. Surprisingly enough, it supposedly even has a UMTS card, lol.
Availability should start from Monday.
Personally I'm gonna get a weaker \ cheaper notebook for the moment, I don't really need anything powerful now neither will that soon, so I'm gonna save some hundred and wait until the next generation models launch (fusion and stuff, where mobility + power + battery life should come so much closer together).
But if I wanted something mobile and powerful right now I think I wouldn't hesitate on these 3820TG, they seem top notch for the price. -
Where is the link? i want to take a look, can not waitting
-
I just got the latest Wired and it has an advertisement for the TimelineX line of laptops and features base specs and the retail price. Any interest in me scanning these and posting them?
-
Yes please!

Got mine today, first impressions are mixed. My other laptop is an Asus X77JA (N71JA). So impressions will be compared to this.
Anyway this is what I got:
5820TG
LX.PTN02.188
Core i5-450M
4Gb DDR3 (Samsung 1333MHz)
640Gb HDD (WD
was hoping for something else than WD)
ATI HD5650
Wireless N (Broadcom)
BT 3.0
My computer is manufactured 31.05.2010, so just 2 weeks from factory to my hands. BIOS: 1.13
Samsung SEC3030 LCD.
+Thes screen is a lot better than expected, especially viewing angels are better than expected. Better than the LG screen of my asus.
+Keyboard and trackpad is a lot better than expected, although not as good as my asus.
+The computer feels fast/snappy.
+Decent speaker sound, but far from my very good asus.
+Design and quality feeling. (honestly yes, I didn't expect an acer to feel this good).
+Buttugly 9 cell battery gives better typing angle and bit more airflow under the computer.
+inaudible fan during light use.
-Poor cooling, stresstesting it brought CPU over 100 C and GPU close to 90 C (more on this in an later in depth review) at stock clocks in an cool room (18 C).
-Cooling fan a lot noisier than my asus under load (and still it cools way worse than asus one).
-9 cell battery is buttugly, had expected it to stick out at back, instead it sticks down and function as the laptops feet - like on 3820TG with 9 cell.
-Truckloads of crapware installed by default. -
Here you go:

First time using this website to host a file, so not sure how reliable it'll be or what the amount of bandwidth will be allowed. -

The only 3820TG showing up in North American manifest is LX.PTB02.190 AS3820TG-3022-CA W7HP64/I5-450M/500/BT (not really sure if the O is a letter or number in PTB02 - I used #.) This model shows up on the Synex Website (a Canadian Distributer) which confirms that it will have an English/French keyboard. I don't have privileges to access the Synex site. Maybe somebody can check on availability or specs. I have run searches for the LX.PTB02.190 and 3820TG-3022 and get nothing anywhere in the world.
No idea if it is an HD5650 or HD5470 GPU. You might try running the model numbers to see if it is on sale anywhere else in the world. Maybe you will find something I missed. But, that is all she wrote for now.

Given your chosen name, I expect to see 36Mark06 scores of 9600 to 10,000 from your unit by Monday.

Ads for the T series. Not the TG.
-
I had called synnex on that tg model back when it was originally posted in this thread and it's the lower end ati graphic card
-
Never said it was TG, just TimelineX.
-
You know you've been waiting too long for the new TimelineX models when you see someone in a coffee shop window using an Acer notebook that looks like a new model, and you peer in awkwardly through the glass to see what the sticker with the specifications says.
-
@Inm8#2 at least you didn't run in, pick it up and yell, "where the hell did you get this."
EDIT: NCIX in Canada has 26 - 3820T units in stock. http://ajax.ncix.com/checkinventory.php?sku=53692 I guess that's progress. I went back and re-read the thread today and the T models were supposto arrive by mid June with the TG models coming in July. I guess they are still kind of on schedule. -
Anyone know the price range of the 3820TG models with i5 would be?
I'm currently looking to purchase it from the UK for $1200USD and i sort of need it before mid july -
In Germany, the fanciest i5 3820TG runs for 850 on most stores. UK prices are usually higher though.
Unless the shipping is that much more expensive from Germany than from UK, I think it'd be cheaper to just order a german one and replacing the keyboard with a 3810 US one. -
newegg is starting to have new models roll in. I might purchase one. I'm just going to use it at home so screen size doesn't matter to me. I know what I won't purchase and thats an envy. Seen the 17 in person and no thanks. I think the aspire 5920 that I bought at wally world 3 years ago has better build quality.
Edit: Scratch that, they just have some amd variants now. Crapola. -
Just curious, how would one switch to english, unless they know german of course?
-
Ordering from Germany would knock off $100USD. I could keep the German keyboard. I would think that shipping from Germany compared to the UK to US would be a tad more, but I'll be saving ~$50USD overall
the german alphabet is essentially almost the same as english except for a few extra characters with accents -
Have you checked with the German retailers? Most won't ship to the US and the ones that do charge VAT and tariff. I think you can get it back through customs, but you have to pay it up front and get reimbursed. At least that's what they told me. I estimated shipping at over $100. I think you have to use UPS.
Bronsky
-
If you get it shipped from the UK won't they charge the VAT regardless?
The only way for me to escape from VAT is to order using a business account.
And well, yes, I suppose that you guys that don't really use any accents won't mind a german keyboard as much as I'd do. The lack of an easy 'ç' for instance is quite awful, lol. -
It looks pretty bad. Tried checking out of German shops but it wouldn't even let me because they don't ship out of the EU. With the UK, VAT is $100, doesn't indicate any tarrifs. This is very dishearting, looks like I'll just have to wait for the US to receive shipments
EDIT: i may try to call a few UK and german shops on Monday to see if they can charge my credit card and disregard the online purchasing process. -
Welcome to computeruniverse.net!
This store ships worldwide. Shipping should be around 52 with DHL, according to the simulation I made. -
anyone have a UK source for an i5-5xx and a 5650 3820? Do they even exist in the UK?
-
That's a HD5470. I don't think there are any HD5650's in the UK. Is this somehow punishment for the past four hundred years of colonial empire?
@bolt.pt I think I checked with computeruniverse too. The cost to buy a unit from them and ship to a US addess added 50% to the purchase price, I think. The only place I found that would ship to the US without adding significant VAT and tarrifs was Singapore I think. I just had no confidence in my ability to have warranty or returns processed without a bunch of difficulty. I had a hard enough time getting pricing on the 3820TG.

So I saw a lady with a 3810 today while I was at work. That thing is niiiiiiiicccceeee. I asked her how's the battery life, and she said about 6hours. She's probably using it with the wifi switch on too, I'm guessing.
Can't wait for the 3820TG / Envy 14! -
Weird, I just tried to "buy it" with USA delivery and the price + shipping total it's showing me is 765,13 . And they seem to not be charging VAT also, lol.
What the.. ? -
We'll it's been an interesting journey with you all, and I thank you because I've learned so much from so many of you.
I began by purchasing the Asus UL30VT and promptly cancelling my order when I learned of the UL30JT on this site. Then I decided I would go for the Acer 3820TG when it looked to have a similar form factor, much better performance, and similar price.
Well, the Sony Z has always been out there to tempt me. With the recent refresh bringing slightly lower prices I made the jump and bought the Sony Sony VAIO VPCZ124GX/S with i5-520M, NVIDIA 330M, and 256GB SSD. With Bing Cashback (ending in another month or so) from TigerDirect it came out to $1980. I got my cashback confirmation this morning.
I think the higher end models of the 3820TG will end up being a great value. I hope many of you are able to wait and enjoy these. I also think the Envy 14 will be a great option for many of you. It was too heavy for my tastes. Once I got over the price, there was no comparing what I get with the Sony Z. Great build, awesome screen, backlit keyboard, larger SSD, and only 3 lbs. Yes, slightly less battery time, but the weight advantage outweighed
the battery advantage of the Acer.
Thank you for the education, advice, and humor along the way!
Now to the Sony Z owners forum... -
You made a great move. I am waiting a bit longer for the 3820TG but a few things made me look at the Z again: 1080p CTO option, MBP GT330M's 8960 OC score in 3DMark06, adaption of MBP HD/ODD caddy to the Z. I am sure you're going to love it.

We did that ... I think it wouldn't let us complete the transaction. If I remember correctly there's a section of this thread where we discuss trying to order these things from Germany. EDIT: I just tried to order it again. It won't let me fill out the form to get to check out because it has no place for a USA postal code (when you select the code to enter, it only gives you EU countries). I think I did this last time, then called. If you can get to a finaly check out screen and still confirm shipping location to the USA let me know, maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Bronsky
@Dookie - you don't have long to wait if you're getting the Envy 14. You going to order one on the 27th? With the HP CTO 21 day return policy, you can't go wrong. Only a week left to wait - you must be relieved. The refreshed Z12 CTO should be released on the same day. I'm holding on as long as I can for a 3820TG. -
Can't wait for the review. Those temps are really high for a 15.6" unit with an I5-450M. What kind of temps can we expect from the I7-620M/HD5650 version of the 5820TG comming to the US?
Bronsky
-
Great review. Well documented OC process. Off the hook CPU temps but the GPU held up well.

Just got the new Wired magazine. A four page glossy ad for the Timeline x series. Awsome pics of the 58, 48, & 3820s. Oops, a little drool there.
Must be getting close...... -
By any chance could you scan and share those pages with us? Or is that illegal?
-
I posted them a few pages back.
-
Ah, found it. Thank you much! I saw a 3810T(z) in person yesterday at work, and will say that it's a beaut' (pronounced like cute, but meaning beautiful minus the -iful). It didnt look like I expected an Acer to look either (crappy, flimsy, wimpy, etc.), which is a plus
-
Are you sure your numbers are correct? Shipping to the USA for the i5/5650 (SKU: LX.PV102.172) came out to 772,69 for me, which equals $955 USD. That's a fantastic price and if we can get confirmation that the warranty will be valid in the USA, I will buy it tomorrow..
-
Walmart, Amazon, Fry's, BestBuy. Comeon someone, post a release or even a pre-order date, so people's hair colors dont turn gray!
-
Let me know when you get completely through the ordering process. If you can, would you take screen shots along the way. I can't make it work (did you read my post on this?). After it gets in your basket, you have to give it specific information for shipping and it will not accept postal information from the US as it has only EU countries and each one seems to have a different format. There is no format for entering a USA zip code.
Maybe I'm missing something. If you order that, at those prices, I will be right behind you.
I think you have to send it back to your retailer for warranty work but if you're right about the shipping price, who cares?
Try doing more than just pricing one. Take it all the way to check out, where you pay. If you can get me a screen shot of that, i will try again. Shots of each page would be helpful to see how you got there.

OMG!!
I got all the way to the last display on the computer universe site. You may be right Acer.3820TG!!
It would not accept my credit card. I wonder if there is an exchange issue. I'm going to call American Express tomorrow. This would be so cool.
I'll keep you all informed.

Arggg you say this after I just took 10 screenshots and typed up an explanation of each screen
.
My only concern is the warranty. Will there be a 1 year US warranty attached with this laptop? -
It looks like you need to pay with either advance payment or wire transfer. It says that credit card is not permitted. Do you get anything different? How are you going to pay for this?
I think the international warranty is transferrable. Somewhere in this thread, I think there is the form for transferring the warranty to your country. -
Send me a pm so I can confirm that I am doing it the same way. It won't let me pay by credit card. I think I'll have to set up a prepay from my bank tomorrow.
