    I'm afraid so.

Though I hope yus9 would be wrong this time, and we could get this goodie in April/May.

With the current St Patrick's Day deal, the Lenovo Y460 is at under $900 for the HD 5650 model. However, it seems to have some heat issues. For me, it's a serious consideration now, but I'm expecting better heat management and battery life from the new Timelines and the ASUS N82Jv.

I'm out of time to wait. The continued lack of indication of when the 4820 or the N82 might be available in the US is forcing me to order my third choice -- the y460.

If not for that review, I probably would've done the same. Right now I'm trying to work out if the price of the VAIO Z is justifiable to me.
The way I see it, my base price is ~$1000, but
+$250 for style, low weight, and build quality
    +$150 for quality high-res screen
+$200 for 128GB SSD instead of HDD
    -$100 for weaker GPU
    = $1500
so it seems like I can't justify the cost of the VAIO Z to myself unless I can get it for around $1600.

I want to see more information about the Y460, but there just isn't enough.

I think the build quality and weight on the vaio Z are worth more than that. But no doubt about it, it's a very expensive machine. Have to pay to play :(

Plus a desktop with CrossfireX HD 5870s.
As for the VAIO Z, as more and more time passes with no good alternatives I guess my valuation will go up.
At the moment, I'm thinking that while better build quality is nice, I should be fine as long as the warranty is good. Less weight is great too, but I think less than 2.5kg should be good enough for me.

The funny part is that I don't even do much gaming.

I just have this need to buy a laptop with the most powerful components.

The only games I have played in the last 5 years are, Prince of Persia - Sands of Time, Pro Evolution Soccer (which will run of a nVidia 210m also), GTA 3, and a bit of Vice City.

    I know. I am weird.

If you go completely standard on the US CTO Vaio Z, the price is 1,899. You can get 10% discount if you order by phone (see Z thread). That brings the price to $1,709 USD, only $109 more than your acceptable price. It is not really that far off.

My situation is pretty strange too.

I live in Australia, but I'm currently in the United States until July and I want to do some gaming. I have a desktop back in Australia, and I was thinking of getting a new desktop over here since it's cheaper, but I realised that getting it shipped back to Australia would be a hassle and expensive, and plus there'd be the whole issue with the warranties on all the individual parts.

Because of that, I figured I'd get a laptop since I don't have one at the moment. I want something that will give solid gaming performance for a few months here in the USA and then be great for taking to uni every day (~1.5 hours bus ride in either direction) back in Australia (Plus, universities are great places to play games!)

I'd even considered getting a desktop here and then selling the parts, but I figured the laptop would be less risky, and I'd be saving money compared to buying it at Australian prices.

This is the main reason why I'm favouring the ASUS; they have a proper international warranty, at least.

What are the differences between the base model and the rest? From what I gathered, the CTO is like the base model but you get the i5-540M for free, and the only difference between that one and the next step up was 192GB SSD vs 128GB SSD, which doesn't seem worth $200, especially since I'll probably be carrying an external HDD for multimedia files.

I definitely agree that the VAIO Z isn't as overpriced as many people might suggest. Unlike, say, the current Macbook Air, the hardware really is high-performance.

$1709 is getting warmer, but $1500 was the ideal price, while $1600 was acceptable in the absence of alternatives. I might well call Sony and see I would have any warranty issues when I go back to live in Australia, and see what kind of discount I can get - I'm a student back in Australia, at least. Nonetheless, it still pains me to think that the gaming performance of the VAIO Z will be weaker than the other alternatives I was considering.

Maybe look into a Asus UL30JT. It's not out yet, but can be configured with a core i5/i7, and comes with a 310M. It'd be more affordable since it's equipped with the 310M. No sense in wasting the extra money on something you arent going to need.

Isn't this new? Acer's description changed...

    Aspire TimelineX 3820T

The TimelineX Series delivers an extraordinary blend of EXTREMES: up to 12-hour battery life*, ultra-thin-light mobility, and no-compromise performance. You can be completely mobile all day and still enjoy high-definition graphics and plenty of processing power for extreme multitasking. The latest wireless technologies are also featured for staying in constant contact.

    * Depending on configuration and usage. 9-cell battery pack (for 12-hour battery life) is subject to availability.

So I guess these new Arrandale Timelines are now called TimelineX?

The final success of this model will be the price.
    Well at least for me.
If the price is cheap then I will probably jump for it otherwise it will just go into my list of "Overpriced Laptops".

Singapore? Were the Acer units actually on sale at the fair or where they taking orders? If they have enough units to sell at a fair, it can't be long before we see them at Newegg, Tiger, etc., right?

The speculation about the low power arrandales is also interesting. I think I want an M series though. I need the computing power. An I7-620M/HD5650 combo is my preference.

Acer Malaysia doesn't have any intention to bring 3820TG, seems like a repeating like the 3810TG =\

higher res screen on the 15 and we have a winner. add a backlit keyboard and I'll buy it no questions asked.

seriously this is the perfect mix of portability and power, how can they justify not even having the option for a slightly higher res screem on the 15? 1600x900 is all I'm asking!

If so, the Vaio Z is definately an option for people in the US since it can be purchased (with i5 540M, and aroun 0.5 Kg lihgter) for like 1700 USD.

The GST confused me, since I read Canada also applies GST, that's why I thought it was in USD (or CAD), but now I'm happy that I was wrong, SGD sounds (and counts) better.
