what model is your lappy?? 3680/3682???

others w/ this same model can answer this and all your questions better than i can,,, but i'll give it a go anyway

i know if you are working with a 3680 most people have said they MUST totally dissassemble the ENTIRE laptop to do the CPU upgrade....

i'd start by removing the RAM,,, the WIFI card,, and what ever that is beside the WIFI in PIC#1 (it has 2 screws still in it... those could be a part of the prob,,,, and by removing these other parts,, you may find more screws hidden under those components... (just a thought)

pic #1,, the COPPER thing??? is that what you mean?? that is the HEATSINK,, i'd expect Chipset chips,,, CPU and GPU chips to be under there,, so you'll have to remove it,,, you may even be able to replace the stock heatsink paste w/ some higher quailty stuff like Arctic SilVer 5...

Pic #2,, i see the post u mention,, but it looks like it's moving freely,, is there a similar post near the TV out connector (looks like that's where you are held up)... also the round protrusion on the bottom (rubber foot maybe??) there could be a screw below the rubber foot (just a theory)

Pics #3 & 4,, i assume you have tried pulling the WHITE socket from the mainboard??? usually those are similar to the socket beside it... there should be some way to "quick disconnect" it by lifting up,,, sliding forward or backward... (there aren't plastic clips at it's base locking it in making it HARD to release??) if not,, then it might be possible to use a VERY small jewelers screwdriver to release the plastic catches that are holding the wires into the socket (last resort if no one else has a better solution)

Pic #5 is not clear enough for me to make out details... but i'm betting you need to totally dissassemble the LAPPY...

while i had the laptop torn down this far,, i'd try to locate a CHEAP 3rd wire antenna if you think you may upgrade to a N class Wifi adapter in the future you'll need that 3rd wire since N adapters use a 3 antennas instead of one.... but if you are happy w/ your current wifi,,, then don't worry about it.

my advice is to take more PICs for your own use in re-assembly... keep screws seperated by location of removal... (putting screws on duct tape keeps them in order and less likely to get misplaced or lost when trying to pick up one screw at a time...

wish i could be more help

    bigO

The wire can be simply pulled out by using tweezers or by someone with small fingers.

Push the S-Video Connector & the USB Port inwards then put some force into it to pry the chassis apart.

If i pull the wire out then how can i reinsert it..??
and trying to take the chasis apart....is there a risk of damaging the heatsink and motherboard..??

There is no risk, and believe me I had the same problem lol.

If you can take the wire out, reinsert it the same way. :)

i did open the laptop today and saw the cpu for the fist time....but now i am afraid that i might have been too hasty whilst screwing it up back again....there s a weird faint buzzing sound coming from near the fan....i ve just started the laptop and the temp is not goin above 48 where normally it idles at 55-56 C....

Yes it is, but make sure to completely clean of the old compound (but leave the pads) with some isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Also try not to touch the copper heatsink with your bare hands, the oils from your skin will get onto the copper and create hot spots. Clean those areas with the alcohol also. Remember, you need only a thin layer of AS5.

Yes, I believe it only takes a quarter or half turn to release the cpu. It would good to clean dust out of the fan. Also note the numbers on the heatsink (above the CPU), that is the pattern to follow when tighten down the heatsink onto the cpu. Screw down #1 first, then #2, ect...

Forgot the youtube guide, you are dealing with a much smaller area for the AS5 on a mobile cpu.

Do follow SSX4Life's guide. He has some great info there, with a good step by step and pictures. It worked perfectly for my 5672. On my 3680, I left the pads for the GPU and northbridge (?) on the heatsink and only used AS5 on the CPU.

BigO: has given me an idea for the front page Krazy.

as intel like to keep changing things(just to keep us awake).
we need to but CPU codes for pin and socket types on the front page. as this will give upgraders more idea of the cpu range they can go for with there chipset.

    Skibums Nice post mate :D

FC-µBGA is designed for lower power than FC-BGA. So the Merom might have insufficient power.
Second, most FC-µBGA are machine soldered and I have found the codes used for CPU's and there sockets is another intel minefield :(
all i was looking at was the power difference and heat issues between cpu's.

    its all BigO's fault :D

Alright then, PM me or list it so I can just copy and paste it onto the front.

I was actually thinking of putting a Centrino Pentium M into my 3680 just to test how backwards compatible it could be. It has a lower frequency and being a centrino it outputs less heat. The chip came from an old Averatec I have, going to start that project this weekend. :D

you go Krazy... more info is always a good thing....

i'm not positive about what i clued Hoggie into,, or i'd post a little teaser...

aww heck... here is a hint...

socketM cpus have eSpec ids beginning with SL8 or SL9
socketP cpus have eSpec ids beginning with SLA only
(pay attention to the LV and ULV versions)

    any Celeron 410 thru 520 is a SOCKET M
any Celeron 540 or higher is a SOCKET P
Celeron 530 is made in BOTH socket M & P so check the eSpec on the chip

i think that might be where Hoggie is heading,,, but i'm sure he well be much more eloquent and definative than my meager post ;)

Hey, I was thinking about upgrading the graphics on the acer 3680 from the intel 945GM chipset; ie 950gma internal graphics. I believe the chipset has a PCI express x16 slot, although of course there is no hope of retrofitting a graphics card internally, different models using the same components otherwise do have other graphics, ie nVidia 7900 go etc. So, i'm guessing that the PCI express slot is usable, and have come up with a plan. I'm not that much of a techie, so i thought i'd just run this past some pro's first. If I can buy a PCI express riser, with an 11cm cable like this one; http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=10881
then I could open up my lappy, plug that in to the slot, route it out of the laptop by slightly filing the keyboard edging or displacing the expansion slot on the side, and then connect to a decent graphics board on the outside, probably connecting that with another riser so as not to damage the board by repeated unpluggings. Any thoughts or tips, or indeed knowledge of the layout of the grapevine motherboard would be appreciated. I can't find any information on the layout, so i guess it will be a case of open up, find out, then buy parts and do unless you guys can help out.

And, do you think using a graphics board with external power would probably be a good idea. I guess it would....:confused2:

just download and install the most current BIOS from support.acer-euro.com

newest bios flashes usually contain the most current (best) support for CPUS,,, and may have other benifits as well

no need to dig around looking for a certain version unless others here have have reported probs with the newest version!!

ONLY USE BIOS FILES FOR YOUR MODEL

sorry for the caps,, but u need to realize the BIOS is model specific and i would hate to see you ruin your laptop

just go to the acer site listed above and get the highest version # for your model....

hopefully that will clear it up for you.

Hoggie how is that list of LV and ULV Core 2s coming along. I'm excited to start searching for one on EBay! :D

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Alright 3680 Users I think I found something that anyone with cash can safely try. If you know for sure that your CPU was Socket M, you can go all the way to the T7600 which was the last T7X00 before the Santa Rosa Refresh.

Stats: T7600 2.3 GHz; 667MHz FSB; 4MB cache; Lowest "Buy it Now" price $350 USD

Recommended for those with a 3680-2682 and above

slowly: its a minefield mate you have so many things to way up.
    power(watts)-heat-volts.
if you under volt or you mother board can't supply the volt's needed there is no point in the upgrade as why would you want an under-volted CPU with no option to over clock with the mother-board you have :(

but im still working on it :D

try the T1350!!! It is the highest cpu, which the 940 support!!!
The 940gml supports no CoreDuo/ 2Duo, for that, you need i943 or higher!!!
    I have a T5300 and a T5600 for sale!!!

    @angad1608
T5500 i'm using now is SL9SH (sorry for not telling you this)

    @krazyphire
I'm also using v.3508 right now. Seems that there is no difference compared to V.3505.

yeah, to me too. thought, there is a i943 inside, because cpuz sais I943/940...in hoggie´s notebook (7110) it works...but in mine 7112 NOT... i still hope that my t5300 is damaged...can try the T5600 on weekend...last chance...if not comes the T1350...changing mainboard is to expensive, i think...
