i think there might not be any dif b/w the 2 T5500s....I bought because I got a factory-sealed cpu in $70....
now just need to be sure whether the T5200/T5300 is compatible with moi motherboard....or probably might settle for the T1350 till I get a Cpu change....!!

I am getting a motherboard (new) AZL06.003 sumthing lyk that for $160 including shipping and then sell my motherboard and probably get some money out of that as well....will do that after my term ends....!!

Is anyone else's Acer 3680 is running in IDE mode?

The attached screen shot shows how my Acer 3680-2633 is running in IDE mode even though a SATA notebook hard drive is used.

Does anyone know how to enable SATA in the Phoenix BIOS?

Can someone please upload a screen shot of their SATA controller too? Thanks!

Overclocking would only serve to increase the frequency of the unworkable CPU. I would think that a T5200 would work, but let me look thru the thread to find which CPUs work w/ your 940.

appreciate that krazy and bigO....yeah i ll just probably try a T5200....get hold of a cheap one....if that works fine otherwise i ll just change the motherboard to a 943 or 945....and in the mean time install a T1350....

But one thing is on the motherboard there are like 3 jumpers together and PC166 is written besides them....technically the FSb is quad....something that means currently the FSB is 133x4=533MHz....if i can adjust the speed of the FSB by software or by tampering with the jumpers to PC166--166x4=667MHz....it cud actually work....the problem is there is currently no software which could overclock the specific clock generator i hve got in my motherboard....so i am just looking for guides to how to do all this stuff through the jumper settings....!!

It is an Aspire 3680 ? If so, report what is wrote on the sticker of the ram bays. If the code starts with MB.TEB06 it is a i940 and your best choice is a T1350. If the code starts with MB.AZL06 it is a i943 and you can go also with a dual core Merom.

Well u cud upgrade ur ram to upto 2gig with 1 gig ram in each slot....u cud goto crucial.com and run a system scan to know more about the ram upgrade....As for the bios u could download the folowing bios ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/note...ire_3680/bios/
or goto support.acer-euro.com and get the exact bios for ur laptop....

As for the CPU u may have to check the motheboard code on ur ram-bay....or download PC WIZARD or CPUz or EVEREST ULTIMATE and see which chipset u have....
As for the MB codes compare them from here http://www.acerparts.com/index.php?cPath=561_562_1084_7516
if u have the 940gml u can only go upto a core solo T1350 or u may try a core 2 duo T5200 (and lemme know about the upgrade :D ), if a 943gml u cud go upto a core 2 duo T7600 (logically) or any other cpu with an FSB of 667 or 533MHz....and if a 945gm - then its a different story....!! :p

rest u cud probably upgrade upgrade ur screen to non-glare if u dont have one, ur hardrive to a 7200rpm spindle speed depending upon u ve got an IDE or SATA port....and maybe ur optical drive to a DVD Dual-Layer Drive....

    Thats pretty much it....

Nor a T5200 upgrade is possible with a 940gl, any dual core processor needs a 943gml.

while he linked you to the 3680 BIOS,, the very next line reads

"or goto support.acer-euro.com and get the exact bios for ur laptop...."

please never try to flash your BIOS with any other than FILES approved by the manufacturer for your model... just makes good sense!!!

Angad1608 with your 940GML mobo the highest stable CPU you can update to would be a Core Duo T1350.

PS: I'll be out for a few days while I take care of the trojan problem on my Acer 3680, atm I'm typing from my friend's mac.

Folks....one thing I cant clear out is that both everest ultimate and pc wizard 08....show that the max supported fsb speed is 667MHz....then whats the diff between intel 943gml and intel 940gml that the latter is not able to run core duos or core 2 duos....??:confused2:

that was the same output at my board and T5300 and T5600 were not running...So i have a 940gml...940 supports only FSB 553MHz and max. a core solo...943 supports 667 MHz and Core Duo´s and 2 Duo´s...

the motherboards look the same, and I guess are the same, and so are the chipsets, pretty much....so what is locking the 940gml to single-core cpus....!!

it's the 940 it's self that is "locking" you into core solo cpu... that chipset doesn't have support for core duo or core 2 duo... intel locked the features out of that chip.... if they even implemented them at all....

you'll have to change mobo's to go higher than a core solo...

check intel's specs for the i940 chipset...

I'm intrigued to upgrade wife's 3680 to C2D after reading all 73 pages of post. Can anyone here (Skibums or others) PM me the service guide to get started?

Also, I think the mbd comes with 943 chipset (mem label checked), is that confirmed T7200/T7600 are in the reach? 4M L2 would be sweet.

Hey all, I'm new here :)

I have a 3680-2633 with a T5300 on the way so I can upgrade it. I've been going through a lot of this thread for more info, but the one thing I might be missing is a guide to dismantling this laptop. Anyone know where I can find a guide to taking apart the 3680? Thanks in advance :)

Thanks for the fast response...the guide diagrams are...interesting, but I think will be helpful. The video is for a different model, but I assume if it was posted in response to me that the process is similar? From what I've read here, taking apart the 3680 requires a nearly full dismantling and reassembly...hope I don't mes it up!

Oh yeah sure does....I had a tough time myself....but now after doing it so many times I have actually learned the whole process by heart.... :D
the tough part will be removing the upper case after u remove the keyboard and screen, if it is the first time u are taking the laptop apart....just try to be a bit smooth on it as it was built to be dismantled.... :D
as for the vid....follow the same process although the chasis and all are different....

    Uhmm....No
I just used CPUcool 'cause thats the only software that supports my CPU clock generator....
increased the FSB to 166.75MHz and the NB voltage by 0.04V and got a cpu frequency of 2337MHz (initially 1600) with a celeron :D ....and the temperatures reduced by 2*C.... :D

u cud probably try to inc that through software or just get a custom bios....
i am trying to play around with the jumpers and get some sense out of the jumper diagrams....
so far have learned how to properly flash the bios password :D
I guess I would try to upgrade to an i945gm motherboard because I had heard they ve a max fsb of 800MHz....not sure though..!!

angad1608, what is the PLL you selected in Cpucool ? I supposed my Aspire 3680 used the ICS 954310 as the service guide claims, but if select it in Cpucool, i get values as frequency and fsb seeming wrong... or maybe i am not able to use Cpucool. Any help is welcome :)

well i used this version of CPUcool.... http://rapidshare.com/files/119428979/CPUCOOL9.EXE and just to be sure u have the 954310 PLL....only remove ur upper casing and u cud probably see the clock gen chip....just search for it or refer the jumper diagram in the service manual for its exact position....but its definitely on the keyboard side of the motherboard..!!

    As for CPUcool

    Just goto functions(menu bar)

    -- change fsb/cpu speed

-- overthere it ll ask u to choose ur motherboard

    -- click 'I dont know'

-- it will show a big screen and on the top left hand side will be the ICS PLLs in the form of drop down menus

-- ICS will be pre-selected goto adjacent drop-down menu and to the very bottom-end where u ll be able to locate ICS 954310

-- it will say to fine-tune in red letters at the bottom of the screen

-- click on the fine tuning button

-- its simple here....check frequency fine 1 or 2 or 3....and just click +60 or +10 and vice versa....depending upon the amount of increment or decrement u require....!!

-- u may increase the fsb to a max of 166.75 or decrease to a min of 100 (thats what I have tried, to get fsb speeds of 667MHz[2GHz] and 400MHz[1.2GHz])

-- I wud advise not to play around with the core voltages as I hanged my PC 8-10 times in order to get the right core voltage....but when u do get everything right....the frequency and performance is high and the temp is low....will wait for a better software such as clockgen or setfsb to come out with support for this PLL....

currently m undervolting my PC with a core voltage of 1.2225V and 400MHz FSB to get a speed of 1159MHz and a temp of unreal 31*C

    Hope this helps
    if not lemme know....:rolleyes2:
