Good luck with the surgery!
edit: I didn't mean to quote you. I was thinking it would quote your signature for some reason. -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Looks like AMD is going to be going to auto-switching according to this article. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Lets hope the drivers are good enough to not cause issues like early optimus.
AMD Launches Energy-Efficient Radeon 7000M Mobile GPU Series -
If the implementation is different, I have high hopes for the switching
-
My guess is it just downclocks, and this is nothing new. Just uses a lower clock, like the differant states of the 6900 series GPUs.
-
will put a ton of pictures and will do a 3dmark11 run with 580m and 7970m just for comparison
ALL GOES TO
SLICKDUDE80!! without him everything was impossible
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I thought the same thing till I read this.
congrats dude
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
HA !! have fun with the install. Take your time. Lets see some monster numbers
The enduro is just like optimus. Doesn't matter for now because you have to kill iGPU with a 7970m until drivers come -
But will it blend... And fit the m17x R2?
-
Dang, Slick if you were closer I would bribe you to let me borrow it(7970) to see if it presented fan issues in the R2.
-
Oh OK - now I understand. Thanks for clearing that up brother, appreciated!
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You know you want one anyway
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
oh ya...the dang fan issues on the R2. How does the R2 compare to the m15x? No issues with fan on the m15x -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
probably a different EC design or something that causes the issues.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
on the R2, the temp/fan sensor is on the motherboard. In the R3, the temp/fan sensor is on the Vid card. Its much easier to have working fans on the R3 than on the R2. Someone with an R2 will just have to be brave and just try it...ahem, cough, DAN...ahem, cough
-
It's strange, the R2 like Clevo cards with proper fan control etc and don't play well with Dell cards. In the M15x it is the opposite as Dell cards are fully compatible and Clevo cards cause fan issues. They are the same generation and one would think that the mobos would be similar
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
thats dell engineering for ya
-
Hi,
I'm about to buy one for my m17x with an old 6870m, do you know if the 6870m's heatsink is compatible with the 7970m ? I know the bracket isn't but dell is offering me one for 0.70 ... -
I haven't preordered
Upgradeyourlaptop said if 10 cards preordered we could get a 3 month warranty instead of only 1. 450$ a card
Don't know if that is worth it to anyone but I might be preordering there, table21 said on the marketplace that he had afew ES 7970.for sale but never replied. -
DirtyTrickster Notebook Evangelist
I don't know if they'll count existing pre orders, but I ore ordered today.
-
Ordered my notebook with the 7979M yesterday, pretty excited!
-
Hmmmmmmm.....................
To strike or not too strike yet?
Dear Chief,
Cards are CF ready. Would you need also CF cable and X-bracket with matching screws?
Price is $450 per cards; $25 for CF cable; $25 for X-bracket with screws
- upgradeyourlaptop
I'm thinking I might get the Clevo version and then I can try it out in the M17x R2 for you guys and if that doesn't play well with the "Fans" hopefully it will be fine in the M18x.
I'm just waiting back to hear from them about shipping costs. To see if it will be worth it or not.
Cheers.

sounds great
-
I think alotta ppl would appreciate that!
Cheers Chieftan!

Im looking to upgrade my 460m sli in the x7200 to 7970m CF. Any news where one can order the stand alone card ?
I would need the:
1)Cards
2)Fans that fit x7200 chasis and
3)Crossfire cable.
What i dont know if i would need is:
1)Brackets ?? what for ?
2)Bios update ? -
So this video card is officially out today.
I just ordered my laptop from XoticPC with one of these and it still says "Late May" next to it, will this possibly change to at least "early may" since the video card is now out? -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
you just made a ton of people happy
Cheers! -
Where can I get the x-bracket with screws for the upgrade? I currently have a 580m in my r3. I'm also wondering about screen capability considering I have the 120hz 3D. I'm assuming it will just run at 60 hz.
-
I'm currently on chat with Dell's Spare Parts department. I'll let you know what they say.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
no bro, you can't run AMD with a 120 hz. You'll have to wait for the 680m. The 7970m won't even install on your computer...you won't be able to boot even -
Update, Parts Department said that they don't sell the x-plate.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
ebay?
tenchars -
upgradeyourlaptop sells it
25$ -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
The backplate (x-plate) is part of the heat sink assembly.
-
In a M15x, are there any other X-Plates that will fit without modification?
I know the 6990M/6970M is the same, but those were standard. What about the 5830? -
No. All AMD cards prior to the 6900m series have different x-plates, similar to the ones nvidia have always used. If you can snag a 6900m series backplate from anywhere, your set
-
Ah ha. Part YHP1P, just ordered from Dell Spare parts. $33.99 w/ free shipping, turned out to be the same as upgradeyourlaptop, except that they're including the screws and thermal pads, so a tad cheaper I guess.
Edit, and that's for the entire 6990M Heatsink Assembly w/ the "support plate" -
Is there an official part number for the Dell 7970m?
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
that's good info, bro!
i don't believe so. At least they haven't made it public yet. Technically the cards arent even being manufactured till early may -
How much is it?
-

umm where you copy/pasted that specs list. It's obviously legit, I'm just curious there might be more info wherever you got it from.
In case you wrote up that list yourself, my apology then. -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I think he got it from eurocom as that's whats listed at the bottom of his list.

Remarkable score! It doesn't seem to stray too far off of Slick's.
I've been following this thread quite closely, and it's been an awesome read.
All hail King 7970M. Let's see Nvidia try dethrone it. -
sorry, i didn't read all the pages but i searched the guy's ebay page and i don't see the 7970m available. Will it be available soon? and how much will it cost? is it a Dell OEM ? or does Clevo parts work? thanks
