Any real game performance of 7970? Sc2 4v4, withcher, bf3 etc
-
slickdude80 have you tried gta 4 on your laptop max setting at 1080p. View distance aa etc to the top. I wonder if 60fps is achievable then again gta 4 is unoptimised so will hover from 60 to 30fps. If you have it can you do a benchmark.
-
There is just no way I would risk $500, especially when an entire new R4 could be purchased for under $2000 with a 7970m. I would probably just buy a whole new computer and sell my old one rather than taking a $500 gamble on an unwarrantied part.
Anyway, massive bummer, I hope it works out in the end, $500 is a lot to lose with no gain at all. Really most of the risk with just trying the card is minimal, if it isn't compatible or whatever you can resell it. But man, to have it burn out and be a paperweight, that is seriously rough.
-
I predict an OCed 7970M can play "maxed out" DirectX 11 Metro 2033 @ 35+ FPS
Maybe 40+ ;O -

that was what I was going to do before the card exploded
damn it perma sadness
crap I am so fluctuating these days, gone mad??
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
bf3 ultra 1080p = 45+fps
Skyrim maxxed = 70+fps (that includes the towns like white run)
-
I will ship tomorrow
-
Good luck graz'zt, hope it works out for ya!
-
Quick question, could I get the 7970? I remember reading somewhere that once I had the R3 3D I was stuck with Nvidia.

I believe Widezu is scheming to grab one along with a 7970m. -

slickdude80 can you run 3dmark06
I guess something like 40000 without checking any scores -
-
3DMark06 is dated and is very CPU dependent. Not worth running. 3DMark11 should be the norm now.
-
WEll i have the game of Metro 2033 when i get the 7970m or the 680m i will do the TEST
-
Heh - I just recently started playing through Metro
>>> would be awesomely interesting to see how Slick's numbers look for that.
Just wish the damn thing could get AND STAY vsynced - horrible screen tearing!
BTW, how much do FPS typically vary going from 1080p to 1920x1200 (1200p?) res? A lot or just a lil? -
When I played through it I used Adaptive VSync, which fixed tearing, FXAA to make it smooth, I used the Nvidia GPU scaling and scaled it up to 1080p. Using those settings I played in maxed out settings and never saw it below 40 FPS, most of the time it was at or near synced 60.
Anyway, said all that to say that normally res doesn't matter a lot (1080P and 900P on BF3 is within like 3 FPS for me), but I think with Metro is makes a huge difference because of a poorly optimized graphics engine. -
A laptop without a GPU heatsink can theoretically boot right? (fan is plugged in)
-
My guess is like a CPU it would overheat and possibly self destruct up with no heatsink.
just my 2c -
-
If the card is dead already then I suppose as long as the fan is connected you could boot running the iGPU. I have never tried it though.
-
yepp, that was my surprise, I just tried that
again silence...
-
Can you try bios reset? I once plug in my dead 6870M and the system boot on still. In e system info tab it showed that no dedicated GPU found.
-
I am logging in just fine with 580m, no idea what is the trouble of this beast...
-
So who's going to be the first to throw two ( must less one ) 7970m into a R2.

I currently have a 6970M and I was just wondering how much I could get out of it. I was also wondering how much a 7970M costs. If the price difference between the two is reasonable i'm definitely considering an upgrade since the performance increase is so incredible.
-
Price is about $450 is what it looks like if your going with upgradeyourlaptop, which is Eurocoms ebay store, or Table21 who is a member here. The plus side is you can sell your 6970 for maybe $300 to recoup some of the cost. The problem with that is that the 7970 won't be covered by Dell in the event of warranty issues. That's why I would recommend keeping the 6970.
-
and if your 7970m ever explodes like mine did, you will have your oldie 6970m ready to save the day
-

Could someone possibly be nice enough to link me to somewhere I could buy a 7970m?
-
they are not selling on the web right now, you either email upgradeyourlaptop at ebay, or call eurocom
-
ask for Dan Smith from Eurocom
-
i want 1 but i have 580m D: i must wait the 680m jojo
-

Considering my 6970m is slower than your 580m the upgrade is definitely worth it for me haha. I sent upgradeyourlaptop a message on ebay and i'll see how that goes.
-
7970m is on stock +60% faster than 580m...

@katalin, I enabled the iGPU and put the card back and no post again
@BigT, definitely, I am just speaking 3dmark11 (ah I am still feeling the breeziness of that beautiful 5.6k run)

I PASSED THE POST THE DARNED POST!!! to only discover it is not recognized in the device manager
Also one more thing, a laptop can boot without the GPU heatsink
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Hmm really strange. Does it show up in the BIOS?

So it was a driver issue ? Let us know if the drive comes back to life
-
Btw as stupid as I am I didn't go into bios, just logged into windows and checked device manager if it appears as undetected device, but nothing there, then I closed the laptop, as the backpanel was open and it was kinda scary
AMD 7970m available for buy
