Slick, don't take it too personal, he might not have incriminated you after all so let's assume he was talking about someone else and everyone knows here that you and Table21 are not working for Eurocom/Clevo lol
-
I apologize for the inconvenience. That post wasn't about slick. It stems from my personal frustration with eurocom and the ways the do business. And like I PM'ed slick, it's time for me to stop touching that subject and let go.
As for you slick, please disregard it, I didn't mean any harm to you personally. I was very mad and drunk (am still, lol) and allowed myself to get carried away.
Won't happen again, keep up the good work.
cheers -
Don't worry dude, here we all accept a friendly apology
Slick! shipped the card bro! hope Table has some ancient magic to puff this dragon back to its feet -
Nice Peeps - patching things up is always good to see!
Now somebody throw out some more benches and tests.
Perhaps a 3d mark 06 run or 2 just for kicks lol.
I want to see more of the 7970Msssssss power heheheh!
Cheers. -
Can't wait to see if i can upgrade my 780dxr laptop with one of those beast !
-
Can't wait to see whether the modified vbios works
-
modified vbios? whos taking care of that?? did i miss smth? details pleaaase

Awesome bro! I've got my fingers crossed for you. He was able to fix bigTony's 6990 so lets hope for the best...and what the heck is an internship? for what? you gonna be rich and famous?
-
About that, I somehow worked my way into a very well known software engineering company for summer internship, hope I will make some nice contacts -
Is it true that the performance of single 7970m is comparable with Crossfire 6990m? When is 7970m crossfire be available in m18x? When is 7990m be available?
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
awesome. Another geek in the nbr repetoire. This is very good news Grazt! Congrats on that.
As far as games go...anywhere from 30-70%. BF3 Ultra is up 70+% over the previous generation -
we had 2 5.6k 3dmark11's and one 5.8k, so I guess it is kinda confirmed that it is about 6990m cfx
-
Don't worry Slick - I'm certain most people don't think ill of your intentions. We appreciate your efforts and all the fun you've brought here!
EDIT:- oh, and I just read Aikimox's apology - all's well that ends well then! w00t! -

"Dear upgradeyourlaptop,
Hi, I preordered the 7970M.Will they be tested for compatibility issues in an Alienware M17X before you ship? Thanks"
"yes, we are testing with both M17x and M18x models

A friend, lol. All indication, my card should be the "nearest" to final version of the card that we've seen. I'm hoping my new thermal pads get here on Monday too. If not...
-
-
Haha... I have the xplate/retention bracket for the 6990M. All I need? or do I need a full assembly? OH I hope I don't need a full different assembly. Since the M15x didn't come w/ the 6990M, I'd have to buy a full M17xR3 heatsink.
-
HEATSINK, the entire heatsink, 580 heatsink is a ton different...
I saved you one 7970m bro -
Haha.. Holy cow. This sucks. So now I'm looking for a 6990M heatsink that'll work in the M15x...
Looks like I'll have the card and x-plate... but not installing until it's 100% safe. -
-
Yep, sold the M17x. Only have the M15x for the time being. Table confirmed it's plug n play with the M15x too
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
WT, if you need info on the m15x and 7970m, PM table21 for info. he has a 7970m in a m15x and he can give you insight on the heatsink
-
as Slick is saying pm table21 asap, but he is not around a lot nowadays, if he doesn't answer take your time be slow, don't rush things, these are really delicate pieces of hardware -
there shouldnt be a problem with the heatsink it should all be ready to go. if anything you might need a widezu69 heatpipe mod, or the proper screws not the originial m15x heatsink screws....
-
No, it's the 240M in the M15x. No 580M.
I've PM'ed table. I'll take my time. Definitely no need to rush it. -
see I rushed things and now I am out of card
-
I've been using my GPU for 3 days straight benchmarking, gaming, etc, and I am using the 580M heatsink with no issue graz'zt. There's one area (middle right, transistor in the middle of the RAM chips with the little black thing next to it, all on the same level) where I put no pad at all (just a tiny bit of paste which evens things out) since it has contact with the heatsink directly - you see if you put pad there, then the rest of the heatsink will hover above the other transistors/components. You have to get the pad perfect with these things and it's tricky when you haven't done it before..
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
geo, a little birdie told me that you flashed your vbios, is that right?
-
So you didnt put any pad on it? I would kill for some pics from you of the pads layout geo @.@
-
Nah, haven't flashed anything yet.
You do it, honestly nothing can go wrong...
@long I can do a diagram on paint lol, I can remember it quite well -

I just think that since they have to revise the 580M heatsink to dispatch heat better (by adding more copper), it should be more effective than the usual heatsinks for 460M/6870M/6990M. It would be a waste not to use it
.
When my card arrives (on Monday or Tuesday next week hopefully) I will examine the heatsinks more carefully but aside from the added copper, what else is different? (not counting the black tape 'cause I would remove it right away) -
There are some very slight changes, just take pics of both heatsinks when you dissassemble if you can
Before I got the proper Nvidia 580M heatsink, I used the AMD heatsink for my 580M, the only thing that differs between them is the layer/thickness of padding... I think, can't really remember.
For the 7970M, I used the same amount of padding I did for the 580M, but certain select bits adjusted for the AMD card to fit the Nvidia heatsink. I looked at which transistors/components were lower than the main fat ones, and added more padding there, adding pad to make them level with the others (2mm of padding total); and the other bit of the card (between VRAM chips) I took away all pads because the design of the Nvidia heatsink caves into that area. On the heatsink, I have 1mm of pad on the VRAM areas and 1mm of pad in the inner bits and 0mm of padding in the center of the inner bit. The rest of the pad goes onto the card. Simple, lol..
Pics below. -
I think I should be good guys. Reading the thread of installing 6990M into the M15x, in the "guide" in the first post it says:
For all these cards the heatsink of the M15x fits perfectly. No modification needed.
It does say that if I can get the x-plate for the 6990M, that it will be better, but not required. That's why I didn't order the entire heatsink, so hopefully itll work. When I take it apart, I'll ensure everything that needs to be covered, will be covered. And Geo, if you can draw a diagram, or show a pic of how yours is situated, that would be awesome. -
Okays, this is what I did. Pad the M17x R3 Nvidia GTX 580M heatsink and 7970M GPU up as displayed in the pics.
Green - add 1mm of thermal pad.
Red - remove padding/do not pad!
Purple - add 1.5mm of squidgy thermal pad.
Pink - add around 2mm of thermal pad so that these parts are level with the other resistors/components.
DO NOT forget the 2mm pad that is put between the GPU and motherboard.
The grey pad in the heatsink bit is 1mm, the beige pad is about 2mm. Pad the components that are INSIDE the squares, not the square itself.
Credits to graz'zt, your sacrifice enabled me to come up with this. Good luck with the GPU! -
Nice! I will rep you again when I can
.
So for the 2mm pads did you stack them up or did you reuse the thick foamy Dell stock pads?
Also you did not pad the transistor block where 2 VRAM blocks meet together, did you?
What about the 4 big gray ones about the top VRAMs? -
Stacked the pink ones, long strip of beige I reused the thick sticky pad. I reuse all the intact Dell pads, they are really good.
I didn't pad the blocks (there's a big grey one and a little black one next to it) where the vram chips meet, because the Nvidia heatsink caves in here, the components will touch the heatsink without any padding required -
AMD 7970m available for buy
