Benchmark Results: Metro 2033 : AMD Radeon HD 7870 And 7850 Review: Pitcairn Gets Benchmarked -
Not sure what the default voltage is. The 6990s are default of 1.1v. I had them undervolted to 1.0v.
As far as performance hit, there is none. It just makes it so you can't overclock as high. As long as you can keep it stable with an undervolt, there is no performance loss. The undervolt will only cause them to draw less power and run cooler. Since the R2 only has a 240w adaptor, the advantage of undervolting is that the system will not throttle if the undervolt is enough.
I'd just keep the cards at stock clocks with the undervolt. -
Benching is one thing Gaming is an other
When i buy a Gaming Laptop is for Gaming in first place !!! -
Those are all gaming benchmarks. Realworld tests. They are fairly accurate so go off those. This card will play crysis, metro 2033, BF3, all maxed out 1080p no issues at all.
-
I have hear that in the past, with my previeuse bad experience with both this models bought from day one they came out
Asus G73jh-A2 / 720QM / ATi 5870 / 8GB DDR3 / 80GB SSD
M14x Nebula Red i7-2720qm 3 GB GT555m 8GB RAM -
Yeah those cards are a bit weak; especially compared to the 7970m. This thing will make you happy definitely. I'm super excited for mine; about one more week of waiting :'(
-
Cant wait some one here (maybe you) can post some Gaming Fraps instead of Benching!!!!
I will not buy anything until I see some real Fraps in game, even do the Bench results are fabulous
Hope fully we will star seeing some reviews this week!!! -
FRAPS will lower the FPS as it records video. Just monitoring, FRAPs won't lower FPS though.
-
@DR650SE
Sure we all know that!! But some honest reviews will be must appreciated for you and all others who want to jump on the AMD 7970m
Are you still in the MIdel East by the way??? I remember you in those days when you had your M11 lol -
I made it back home in the fal of 2010. Still have the M11x too
Just use it on the couch mostly.
-
lloll nice you made back home!!!
Always love reading you jajajajaja
You really got all the juice out of that little M11 lol -
Teaser:
Display - paid for and in had, using at the moment and calibrated.
GPU and heatsink - paid for, GPU will be with me in Wednesday, heatsink + backplate is coming from the states so will take a bit longer. -
i had a dream last night about that i am taking my old 6970m off, and putting 7970m in....but i can't remember the dream exactly, and did it worked or not and wich thermal pads i used....crap.
-
Can't wait to see your results flingin.

SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Skyrim 1080p ULTRA 4xAA 16xAF (MSAA, none of that FXAA crap) 75+fps
METRO 1080p VERY HIGH AAA DX10 50+fps
Crysis 2 1080p ULTRA DX11 with high res textures installed...2 levels played, and it never dropped below 40 fps...normally 50-55
The fabled 680m will have to work really hard just to match these numbers. -
Upgradeyourlaptop is quiet... Someone talking to them?

Dear johnnyman27,
we are still testing in Alienware models and EM, then we will move to HM. Just waiting for final drivers from AMD

answer from eurocom:
"We should finalize testing early next week and start shipping towards
week end. We are still waiting for final drivers from AMD. They are
still tunning them for maximum performance and O/C support." -

before, they had QS/ES cards that they tested, NOW theyre testing OEM cards because they turned out to be more different to the QS/ES samples than initially expected. this is why the whole time table has been postponed a bit. plus, as they just said, theyre still waiting for AMD to finalize their drivers, since so far they had just been using modded 12.5 beta drivers
cheers -
They want to ensure they are shipping a quality product that they can support. Two weeks isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. Thats why I'm holding out. I've already been able to raise funds for the two cards through sales of stuff I don't need anymore. Once they start shipping and initial reviews are done, I'll be making my purchase. Long live the R2. 7970 Crossfire is going to be nice. Assuming it works in the R2
-
I'm really looking forward to seeing what R2 users such as yourself are able to do with these cards.
And yes, PATIENCE ppl! It's not difficult to appreciate it's better to have working cards that arrive a little later than desired than faulty/mishappy ones pushed out the door ASAP. All credit to Eurocom/UpgradeYourLappy for actually being responsible about this and showing some care and consideration for their customer base. -
Yea I can't wait to see the numbers the cards put up. I'm really just hoping that the cards work in the system. I think they will given that the 6990's and 7970's work in some the same systems. I would think they work in the R2. If not I'll have to sell them and buy another set of 6990sMy hopes and dreams would be crushed! But I'm really thinking they work. Hoping they work I should say. No one's tried them yet so we'll see. If they do work, the R2 will be the greatest notebook ever. Holding my breath for now.

Looks like a bunch of French guys got their M17xR4 + 7970M, here are the first benchs:
3dmark11: P5730 (sorry no link)
3dmark11: P5860 ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
3dmarkVantage: P20243 Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 score: P20243 3DMarks
3610qm Cinebench 64bits: 6.01 ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
Interesting enough, they were using a generic driver from Dell:
Gestionnaire d'install:03 00 0859
Version: 2012.0307.1329.23963 -
further confirms the P5.7-5.8k stock in 11, nice

Good Morning NBR,
Testing and verification is proceeding across multiple platforms, and we purchased a shiny new M18x R1 on Friday to test Crossfire setups in an Alienware system. I've been told the drivers at the moment are a bit quirky, we're doing what we can while AMD tunes the final release drivers. I wanted to give you some insight as to the level of testing we're doing with these cards. As wonderpookie said, it's much better to have a card that's tested and working than to just rush them out the door ASAP.
Testing includes but definitely isn't limited to:
3DMark Vantage & 3DMark11
Uniengine Heaven
Furmark, furmark and more furmark (we're thermally testing the heck out of these cards)
Crossfire
OC testing
VBIOS flash testing
Fan speed testing
Enduro testing
Multiply this by 6 or 7 platforms and there's certainly a good amount of work that needs to be done!
We're working to earn the trust of the NBR community and strive to be your go-to source for notebook upgrades. We feel the best way to do this is to deliver quality products that we can properly support. We find that it would be unacceptable to send out untested cards, much in the same way you would find it unacceptable to receive one.
At this stage, we're hoping that we can testing and verification wrapped up by the start of next week and start shipping out the cards to your eager hands as soon as possible. I wanted to let you know that I personally appreciate your patience during this delay and that I'll have further updates for you as they become available to me.
Cheers,
Dan -

have you guys been able to flash the vbios on these cards successfully? -
Dan,
Do you know if one of the platforms being tested is the M17x R2? I have finally managed to sell off enough stuff to gather the funds for a pair of the cards, but I want to ensure that they operate in the R2 before I take the dive. I know the cards will probably need to be undervolted in order to work without the system throttling. If you are testing in the Alienware M17x R2, is there any premilinary feedback on system compatibility as of yet?
Thanks again for your time and extensive testing. -
DR650SE,
I think you don't need to be concerned about heat or lack of power in the M17xR2. As far as I know from my testing, the 7970m consumes much less than a 580m stock or even 6990m stock, about 10-15W, I know that sounds hard to believe but this is what I found out with my wattmeter on 3dmarkVantage. The 7970M will cope with a mere 150w adapter and i7 SB very well so it should also in your M17xR2 using 240w adapter or ideally 330w.
edit: and regarding heat, it doesnt simply get hot (or it does a bit when heavily o/ced. -
At this point I just need to hope the R2 works with the card. Since heat and power won't be an issue, the only thing left to do is just test if it boots. If it does, this system will be one of the best (most expensive) investments I've made
Glad to hear power consuption is a bit better. The 6990's worked well undervolted, but if I don't have to undervolt, I'll be a much happier camper as it will leave a little room to OC. Not that any game will need an overclock with these cards. -
so...would it be safe to assume that Enduro work on older platforms?
-
Hey, in R2 we can only place thermal pads on memory chips (becouse of the heatsink design), why other laptops eg R3/R4/Clevo have their heatsinks designed the way so all the card components can be coolled ( voltage regulators/transistors etc) this gives an advantage ? and does it means that if you can't cool everything you are limited in OC anyway ?
